Sierra/SD Verification Test Manual 5.32

Tests from the Sierra Structural Dynamics verification test suite are reviewed. For each of the tests presented in this document the test setup, derivation of the analytic solution, and comparison of the Sierra code results to the analytic solution is provided. This document can be used to confirm that a given code capability is verified or referenced as a compilation of example problems.

Preparation of iodine-bearing waste forms for hot isostatic pressing

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has prepared a new set of iodine-bearing sorbents. The sorbent materials used for this activity were supplied by IONEX (NexSorb-99) or C&CS (AC6120-7%). Metal canisters were previously prepared by ORNL in 2022. They are 2 in. long by 1.5 in. in diameter and are made of 316 stainless steel.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) Environmental Performance Report provides a description of the laboratory's environmental management activities in calendar year 2025, including information on environmental performance, environmental compliance activities and status, and environmental protection programs, highlights, and successes. The purpose of this report is to ensure that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the public receive timely, accurate information about events that have positively affected or could adversely affect the health and safety of the public or workers, the environment, or the operations of DOE facilities. This report meets the DOE requirements of the Annual Site Environmental Report (ASER) and has been prepared in accordance with DOE Order 231.1B Chg 1, Environment, Safety and Health Reporting.

Nonlinear reversal of photoexcitation on the attosecond time scale improves ultrafast X-ray diffraction images

The complex refractive index of a material governs its light-matter interactions, with intense light fields enabling tailored nonlinear optical responses. In the X-ray regime, rapid photoionization limits the potential of nonlinear techniques by inducing irreversible electronic damage. Here we demonstrate that intense, sub-femtosecond X-ray pulses, shorter than typical Auger decay times, can partially reverse photoexcitation via stimulated emission near atomic resonances. By analyzing thousands of coherent diffraction patterns and ion spectra from neon nanoparticles exposed to sub-fs and 15-fs pulses, we observe enhanced X-ray diffraction alongside reduced energy absorption for sub-fs pulses. Theoretical modeling attributes this to dynamics akin to Rabi flopping that prolong the lifetime of resonant states and suppress electronic bleaching. These findings suggest that ultrashort, intense X-ray pulses enable active control of X-ray refractive index and damage pathways, opening avenues for improved high-resolution imaging and nonlinear spectroscopy in complex nanoscale systems.
