The 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction - state of the art, astrophysics, and perspectives

One of the most important stellar neutron sources is the 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction, which gets activated both during the helium intershell burning in asymptotic giant branch stars and in core helium and shell carbon burning in massive stars. The 22 Ne(α,n) 25 Mg reaction serves as the main neutron producer for the weak s-process and provides a short but strong neutron exposure during the helium flash phase of the main s-process, significantly affecting the abundances at the s-process branch points. The cross section needs to be known at very low energies, as close as possible to the neutron threshold at E α = 562 keV (Q = −478 keV), but both direct and indirect measurements have turned out to be very challenging, leading to significant uncertainties. Here we discuss the current status of the reaction, including recent and upcoming measurements, and provide a discussion on the astrophysical implications as well as an outlook into the near future.

Whitepaper: Optimal Control from a Fluid Dynamics Perspective

An optimal control problem described by the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation can be developed into a problem that can be solved by general computational fluid dynamics packages. We describe how this formulation would allow a classical problem in optimal control, Zermelo’s problem, to be treated as a multi-fluid problem. This approach has the advantage of allowing optimal navigation problems to be conducted over large areas, as well as to include moderately larger numbers of ships. We draw comparisons between this approach and the field of fluid control for fluid animations in movies.

EJFAT Scientific Perspective

Presented new computing model to the test by deploying the EJFAT system alongside a data-stream processing framework running the production-level CLAS12 event reconstruction application. In this experiment, a continuous stream of CLAS12 Level-1 identified events was processed in real-time using the EJFAT load balancer, distributing the workload across 90 computing nodes located across the U.S. This marks the first-ever large-scale, real-time distributed data stream processing experiment, demonstrating that scientific data-streaming pipelines can efficiently scale across four dimensions, thanks to EJFAT’s advanced hardware and software capabilities.

A Perspective on Traditional and Data Driven Electrochemical Modeling and Analysis

To understand the behavior of electrochemical systems, we need to reduce the dimensionality of the measured current-voltage-time (I-V-t) data by fitting models, thus enabling us to analyze and compare the governing physics. Traditionally, the process for this is an 'expert first' approach: defining the model and its explicit assumptions based on inductive reasoning or empirical observation, fitting small portions of the I-V-t data where assumptions are most valid or carefully designing experiments to enforce key assumptions, and then interpreting the model parameters. However, modern data-driven methods enable a new paradigm: a 'data first' approach, where the latent behaviors governing the system's measured response are identified directly using machine-learning models that optimize both model structure and parameters from the I-V-t data, guaranteeing that the learned model explains as much of the observed system response as possible. After model identification, the model can then be interrogated by an expert to connect observed behaviors with underlying physics. This talk will review several different types of electrochemical analysis (electrochemical impedance, differential voltage-capacity, electrochemical kinetics) and compare the traditional and data-driven methods for analyzing the data.

Artificial Intelligence for (AI) Nuclear Security: Expert Perspectives on AI Priorities for the Office of International Nuclear Security

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform nuclear security operations, offering opportunities to enhance effectiveness while simultaneously introducing new challenges. As AI technologies rapidly evolve, agencies across the United States Government (USG) are researching, implementing, and evaluating various AI models and systems. Given the broad capabilities and applications of these technologies, it is essential for each agency to identify and articulate those areas where it can make meaningful contributions aligned with its mission and expertise. To address this need for strategic focus, in late Fiscal Year 2025 (FY2025), the Office of International Nuclear Security (INS) established an AI Task Force (AITF) to gather input from subject matter experts (SMEs) regarding the most appropriate role INS could serve in researching, evaluating, or implementing AI for nuclear security. The AITF engaged 15 experts from national laboratories with backgrounds in cyber security, physical security, transport security, insider threat mitigation, nuclear engineering, human-systems engineering, and AI/ML development. This white paper summarizes the insights gathered from these SMEs and presents a potential roadmap for INS engagement with AI technologies. The recommendations outlined here are intended to inform INS leadership as they make strategic decisions about resource allocation and program direction in this rapidly evolving technological domain.
