Stress analysis of multilayered plates around circular holes

The elasticity problem for a thick plate consisting of two bonded dissimilar homogeneous layers is considered. It is assumed that the plate is infinite, contains a circular hole, and is subjected to axisymmetric external loads. A technique suitable to the formulation of three-dimensional boundary value problems is introduced and applied to the three-dimensional elasticity solution of an infinite plate with a hole. The effect of Poisson's ratio is studied in some detail, and the axisymmetric problem of a laminated plate is solved. The stresses at the interface are calculated and are observed to become unbounded at the hole boundary. An approximate treatment of the singularity is presented and the stress intensity factors are computed. Some of the results are compared with those found from the finite element method. The agreement between the two sets with regard to trend and magnitude is found to be very satisfactory.

A fracture mechanics analysis for delamination growth during impact on composite plates

A fracture mechanics analysis has been developed that describes the progress of delamination damage in composite plates struck by a hard spherical object. The analysis is based on large deflection plate mechanics for circular isotropic plates wherein multiple axisymmetric delaminations grow. Test data show that the analysis predicts the influence of plate thickness, support conditions, and matrix toughness on the onset and propagation of delamination.

Stresses in pin-loaded orthotropic plates using photoelasticity

The stresses in transparent glass-epoxy plates loaded by a steel pin through a hole were determined by photoelasticity. The stresses around the hole edge, across the net section, along the shear out line, and on the centerline below the hole for quasiisotropic, unidirectional, and angle ply plates are outlined. Stresses in an isotropic comparison specimen are also presented. Stress concentration factors for several locations around the plates are tabulated. The experimental apparatus and the experimental technique are discussed. The isochromatic and isoclinic fringe patterns for the four plates are shown. A description of the necessary photoelastic theory is appended.

Relative potentials of concentrating and two-axis tracking flat-plate photovoltaic arrays for central-station applications

The purpose of this study is to assess the relative economic potentials of concenrating and two-axis tracking flat-plate photovoltaic arrays for central-station applications in the mid-1990's. Specific objectives of this study are to provide information on concentrator photovoltaic collector probabilistic price and efficiency levels to illustrate critical areas of R&D for concentrator cells and collectors, and to compare concentrator and flat-plate PV price and efficiency alternatives for several locations, based on their implied costs of energy. To deal with the uncertainties surrounding research and development activities in general, a probabilistic assessment of commercially achievable concentrator photovoltaic collector efficiencies and prices (at the factory loading dock) is performed. The results of this projection of concentrator photovoltaic technology are then compared with a previous flat-plate module price analysis (performed early in 1983). To focus this analysis on specific collector alternatives and their implied energy costs for different locations, similar two-axis tracking designs are assumed for both concentrator and flat-plate options.

Vibrations of circular orthotropic plates in affine space

The vibration of an initially compressed plate having a circular geometry and orthotropy is examined in an affine space. The classical linear plate theory and Hamilton's principle are employed. The equations of motion of the plate are particularly simple in the chosen affine space, permitting a free-vibration study of the entire spectrum of composite materials with polar orthotropy. Approximate but very accurate standing-wave-type mode shapes are used in solving the essentially double eigenvalue problem to determine the effects of midplane forces on the vibration frequencies of the plate. The results indicate that the affine-space frequency increases with increasing stiffness ratio but decreases with increasing midplane compression. It is also discovered that, contrary to the trends observed for rectangular geometry and orthotropy by Oyibo (1981), Brunelle (1982), and Brunelle and Oyibo (1983), the affine-space frequency increases with increasing generalized Poisson's ratio.

Mechanical obstacles to the movement of continent-bearing plates

Selected geophysical problems associated with the concept of continental drift as an incidental corollary of plate movement are discussed. The problems include the absence of a suitable plate-driving mechanism for plates with continental leading edges, the absence of the low-velocity zone under shields, and continental roots of 400 to 700 km depths. It is shown that if continental drift occurs, it must use mechanisms not now understood, or that it may not occur at all, plate movement being confined to ocean basins.

A swirl flow evaporative cold plate

A forced flow evaporative cold plate is under development for future application to the thermal bus concept being pursued by NASA for Space Station Thermal Control. The vaporizer is a swirl-flow device employing a spiral tube coil geometry sandwiched between conductive metal plates upon which electric components could be mounted. This concept is based on the inherent phase separation that occurs in a two phase stream in curvilinear flow. This is a zero 'g' design with one 'g' all-attitude capability and is capable of high heat transfer coefficients, good isothermality, and the ability to function at heat fluxes approaching 5w/sq cm on the cold plates (10w/sq cm on the tube wall) with Freon 114. The advantages of this design over other two phase evaporator approaches are high heat flux capability, simplified control requirements, insensitivity to micro-gravity oscillations, and inexpensive manufacturability. The program included design, fabrication, and test of such a cold plate utilizing an existing test stand developed for two-phase thermal management system (TPTMS) testing. Test results analysis and conclusions are included.

Nonlinear transient responses of initially stressed composite plates

The nonlinear transient response of initially stressed composite plates is investigated using the finite element method. A nine-node isoparametric quadrilateral element is developed to model laminated plates under initial deformation and initial stress according to the Mindlin plate theory and von Karman large deflection assumptions. In the time integration, the Newmark constant acceleration method in conjunction with an efficient and accurate iteration scheme is used. Numerical results for deflections and bending moments for isotropic and laminated plates are obtained.

Analyses of quasi-isotropic composite plates under quasi-static point loads simulating low-velocity impact phenomena

In thin composite laminates, the first level of visible damage occurs in the back face and is called back face spalling. A plate-membrane coupling model, and a finite element model to analyze the large deformation behavior of eight-ply quasi-isotropic circular composite plates under impact type point loads are developed. The back face spalling phenomenon in thin composite plates is explained by using the plate-membrane coupling model and the finite element model in conjunction with the fracture mechanics principles. The experimental results verifying these models are presented. Several conclusions concerning the deformation behavior are reached and discussed in detail.

Analysis of a finite composite plate with smooth rigid pin

An elastic continuum method of analysis developed for a smooth rigid pin in a finite composite plate by using complex potentials that satisfy the governing orthotropic differential equation is presented. The plate is subjected to uniaxial loading and the nonlinear problems of partial contact in the pin-plate are studied. Three types of pin fits are examined: interference, push, and clearance. The problems of stresses due to pure interference, load contact behavior, and stresses variations are addressed. The effects of the rectangular geometry and the orthotropic property of the plate are demonstrated through numerical results. It is found that the use of large hole diameter/plate width ratios have deleterious effects and the use of interference has beneficial effects. The solutions obtained will help in the development of special finite elements for fastener joints. Finally, the boundary conditions on the finite outer boundaries are found to be satisfied by a successive integration technique.

Holographic interferometry - Errors caused by thermal gradients in holographic plates

Thermal effects as sources of errors in holographic interferometry are illustrated on an example of reflection holography patterns obtained on graphite-epoxy specimens exposed before and after compressive loading. The numerical interpretation of the obtained holograms indicated some peculiar unexpected thickness changes in the specimen. In addition, some patterns showed random occurrence of zones of low and zero contrast. These discrepancies occurred usually in the first of the two exposures and were traced to thermal warping and thermal relaxation patterns caused by small temperature gradients that resulted from heat transfer to the photographic plates during their installation. Suggested precautions to minimize thermal effects include using thick holographic plates (photographic plates attached to glass plates) and insulated gloves during handling and allowing time to establish thermal equilibrium before the exposure.

Nonlinear effects in the coupled response of tiles bonded to a plate

The coupled response to a large impulse on tiles bonded to a finite plate is studied. The analysis includes geometric nonlinearity born from boundary restraint in the plane, which stiffens the plate transversely. It also includes material nonlinearities born from plasticity of the plate's material and from properties of a polymer bond including memory and dissipation. The equations of motion are solved by the Galerkin method using linearized eigenfunctions of the system as trial functions. A strip of plate which is one tile wide is modeled.

A compressive failure model for anisotropic plates with a cutout under compressive and shear loads

The paper introduces a failure model for laminated composite plates with a cutout under combined compressive and shear loads. The model is based on kinking failure of the load-carrying fibers around a cutout, and includes the effect of local shearing and compressive stresses. Comparison of predictions of the model with available experimental results for quasi-isotropic and orthotropic plates with a circular hole indicated a good agreement. Predictions for orthotropic plates under combined loading are compared with the predictions of a point-stress model. The present model indicates significant reductions in axial load-carrying capacity due to shearing loads for plates with principal axis of orthotropy oriented along the axial load direction. A gain in strength is achieved by rotating the axis of orthotropy to counteract the shearing stress, or by eliminating the compressive-shear deformation coupling.

The effect of a small initial curvature on the free vibration of clamped, rectangular plates

An analytical method of obtaining the natural frequencies and mode shapes of clamped, rectangular plates having a small initial curvature is presented. Specifically, the singular perturbation technique is used to reduce the fourth-order plate vibration problem to the simpler membrane problem with modified boundary conditions that account for the bending effects. The eigenfrequencies for plates with inverse aspect ratios varying between 0.1 and 1.0 and for the dimensionless normal prestress between 0.1 and 1.0 have been presented for values of epsilon, the normalized bending rigidity, ranging between 0.0010 and 0.2500. It is established that a small initial curvature has no effect on the frequency of vibration of the plate. However, its effect is manifested in the eigenmodes.

Development of powder metallurgy 2XXX series Al alloy plate and sheet materials for high temperature aircraft structural applications, FY 1983/1984

The objective of this investigation is to fabricate and evaluate PM 2124 Al alloy plate and sheet materials according to NASA program goals for damage tolerance and fatigue resistance. Previous research has indicated the outstanding strength-toughness relationship available with PM 2124 Al-Zr modified alloy compositions in extruded product forms. The range of processing conditions was explored in the fabrication of plate and sheet gage materials, as well as the resultant mechanical and metallurgical properties. The PM composition based on Al-3.70 Cu-1.85 Mg-0.20 Mn with 0.60 wt. pct. Zr was selected. Flat rolled material consisting of 0.250 in. thick plate was fabricated using selected thermal mechanical treatments (TMT). The schedule of TMT operations was designed to yield the extreme conditions of grain structure normally encountered in the fabrication of flat rolled products, specifically recrystallized and unrecrystallized. The PM Al alloy plate and sheet materials exhibited improved strength properties at thin gages compared to IM Al alloys, as a consequence of their enhanced ability to inhibit recrystallization and grain growth. In addition, the PM 2124 Al alloys offer much better combinations of strength and toughnessover equivalent IM Al. The alloy microstructures were examined by optical metallographic texture techniques in order to establish the metallurgical basis for these significant property improvements.

A compressive failure model for anisotropic plates with a cutout under compressive and shear loads

Failure models for the prediction of compressive strength of plates with a hole are investigated. One of the models is based on the strength failure of the fibers that leads to fiber kinking failure. A different version is developed for cases where shear failure of the fibers is expected to be a dominate failure mode. Both models are capable of including the effects of combined shearing and compressive stresses around a hole in a plate and, therefore, are expected to be applicable to plates under combined shearing and compressive loadings, as well as anisotropic plates.

Heat transfer in the stagnation region of the junction of a circular cylinder perpendicular to a flat plate

The heat transfer rate in the stagnation region of the junction of a circular cylinder perpendicular to a flat plate was measured for a range of Reynolds numbers varying from 3.0 x 10 to the 4th to 7.0 x 10 to the 5th and a flow Mach number of 0.14. The measurements were performed in a shock-tube facility using a reflected shockwave technique and thin-film platinum heat gages. The heat flux was measured for both the plate and the circular cylinder. A substantial increase in the heat transfer rate in the junction region was observed. The influence of the cylinder over the flat plate extended beyond 3/4 cylinder diameter for low Reynolds numbers. For high Reynolds numbers the maximum increase in the heat transfer rate was observed to be approximately 100 percent, but for very low Reynolds numbers a maximum increase in the heat flux to the plate by a factor of 5 was observed. The variations in the heat transfer rate to the stagnation point of the cylinder was very small.

Quaternions as astrometric plate constants

A new method for solving problems in relative astrometry is proposed. In it, the relationship between the measured quantities and the components of the position vector of a star is modeled using quaternions, in effect replacing the plate constants of a standard four-plate-constant solution with the four components of a quaternion. The method allows a direct solution for the position vectors of the stars, and hence for the equatorial coordinates. Distortions, magnitude, and color effects are readily incorporated into the formalism, and the method is directly applicable to overlapping-plate problems. The advantages of the method include the simplicity of the resulting equations, their freedom from singularities, and the fact that trigonometric functions and tangential point transformations are not needed to model the plate material. A global solution over the entire sky is possible.
