New York State Household Travel Patterns: A Comprehensive Comparison Analysis

In 1969, the U.S. Department of Transportation began an initiative to collect detailed data on household and personal travel, with the most recent surveys being the 2017 and 2022 National Household Travel Surveys. The primary goal of these surveys is to collect trip-based data on the nature and characteristics of personal travel, allowing for an analysis of the relationships between travel patterns and the socio-economic and demographic characteristics of travelers and their households. In addition to the sample households allocated to New York State (NYS) in the national survey, they procured an additional sample of households in the 1995, 2001, 2009, and 2017 surveys. This report presents a comprehensive analysis of travel patterns, vehicle ownership trends, and travel behaviors across NYS regions and the rest of the nation.

Update on PIP-II beam pattern generator upgrade

The beam pattern generator enables the transfer of beam pulses from the PIP-II linac to the Booster ring, the two RF systems being non-harmonically related. It is synchronized to the timing system to provide beam arrival information to the downstream accelerator subsystems. The design is being upgraded with COTS components and is being developed with a collaboration with SLAC.The pattern generation, digital signal processing and the user interface to an external EPICS server are integrated onto the ARM processor of the SOCFPGA. The progress of the system development is described.

Exploiting correlations in multi-coincidence Coulomb explosion patterns for differentiating molecular structures using machine learning

Coulomb explosion imaging (CEI) is a powerful technique for capturing the real-time motion of individual atoms during ultrafast photochemical reactions. CEI generates high-dimensional data with naturally embedded correlations that allow mapping the coordinated motion of nuclei in molecules. This enables reliable separation of competing reaction pathways and makes this approach uniquely suited for characterizing weak reaction channels. However, rich information contained in experimental CEI patterns remains largely underexploited due to challenges in visualizing correlations between multiple observables in multi-dimensional parameter space. Here we present a new approach to CEI of intermediate-sized polyatomic molecules, detecting up to eight ionic fragments in coincidence and leveraging machine-learning-based analysis to identify patterns and correlations in the resulting high-dimensional momentum-space data, enabling robust molecular structure identification and differentiation. Our approach provides high-dimensional background-free data encoding exceptionally rich structural information and establishes an automated, scalable framework for extracting insightful information from the data. As a demonstration, we apply this method to image and distinguish dichloroethylene isomers, showcasing its potential for broader applications in molecular imaging. Our results pave the way for channel-specific analysis of ultrafast structural dynamics in chemically relevant systems, particularly for disentangling mixed reaction pathways and detecting contributions from weak channels and minority species.

Linking large-scale weather patterns to observed and modeled turbine hub-height winds offshore of the US West Coast

The US West Coast holds great potential for wind power generation, although its potential varies due to the complex coastal climate. Characterizing and modeling turbine hub-height winds under different weather conditions are vital for wind resource assessment and management. This study uses a two-stage machine learning algorithm to identify five large-scale meteorological patterns (LSMPs): post-trough, post-ridge, pre-ridge, pre-trough, and California high. The LSMPs are linked to offshore wind patterns, specifically at lidar buoy locations within lease areas for future wind farm development off Humboldt and Morro Bay. While each LSMP is associated with characteristic large-scale atmospheric conditions and corresponding differences in wind direction, diurnal variation, and jet features at the two lidar sites, substantial variability in wind speeds can still occur within each LSMP. Wind speeds at Humboldt increase during the post-trough, pre-ridge, and California-high LSMPs and decrease during the remaining LSMPs. Morro Bay has smaller responses in mean speeds, showing increased wind speed during the post-trough and California-high LSMPs. Besides the LSMPs, local factors, including the land–sea thermal contrast and topography, also modify mean winds and diurnal variation. The High-Resolution Rapid Refresh model analysis does a good job of capturing the mean and variation at Humboldt but produces large biases at Morro Bay, particularly during the pre-ridge and California-high LSMPs. The findings are anticipated to guide the selection of cases for studying the influence of specific large-scale and local factors on California offshore winds and to contribute to refining numerical weather prediction models, thereby enhancing the efficiency and reliability of offshore wind energy production.

QPatLib: A community repository of measurement-based quantum computing patterns

QPatLib is a community repository of measurement‑based quantum computing (MBQC) patterns and associated metadata, intended to support reuse, benchmarking, and reproducible comparison of MBQC constructions across platforms and compilers. Patterns in QPatLib are expressed in a standardized, human‑readable measurement calculus representation. Details can be found here: https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2605.12502

Influence of Tire Tread Pattern and Runway Surface Condition on Braking Friction and Rolling Resistance of a Modern Aircraft Tire

A series of taxiing tests was conducted at the Langley landing loads track with both braked and unbraked (freely rolling) single and tandem wheels equipped with 32x8.8 type VII aircraft tires of different tread designs to obtain data on tire and braking characteristics during operation on dry and on contaminated concrete and asphalt run ways. Contaminants used were water, slush, JP-4 jet fuel, and organic and detergent fire-extinguishing foams. Forward velocities for the tests ranged from approximately 13 to 104 knots. Vertical loads of approximately 9,000 to 22,000 pounds and tire inflation pressures of 85 to 350 pounds per square inch were used. Results indicated that the unbraked tire rolling resistance increased with increasing forward velocity on dry and on contaminated runway surfaces. Peak tire-ground friction coefficients developed during wheel braking decreased rapidly with increasing velocity on contaminated runways but remained relatively unchanged on dry runways as the forward velocity was increased. Dry-runway friction coefficients were found to be relatively insensitive to tire tread pattern. However, the magnitude of the friction coefficients developed by tires on contaminated runways was extremely sensitive to the tire tread pat tern used, with circumferential-groove treads developing the highest values of friction coefficient, and smooth and dimple treads the lowest values for the tread patterns and runway conditions investigated.

Dot patterns provide reproducible flaw areas for study of adhesive bonds

Photographic production of a small-dot pattern of known geometry on the surface of a substrate for controlled area degradation enables a study of adhesive bond strengths. These dot patterns may also be applied to force-limiting devices which must depend on the adhesive bonding strength between mating surfaces.
