Abstract Multimodal hard X-ray scanning probe microscopy has been extensively used to study functional materials providing multiple contrast mechanisms. For instance, combining ptychography with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) microscopy reveals structural and chemical properties simultaneously. While ptychography can achieve diffraction-limited spatial resolution, the resolution of XRF is limited by the X-ray probe size. Here, we develop a machine learning (ML) model to overcome this problem by decoupling the impact of the X-ray probe from the XRF signal. The enhanced spatial resolution was observed for both simulated and experimental XRF data, showing superior performance over the state-of-the-art scanning XRF method with different nano-sized X-ray probes. Enhanced spatial resolutions were also observed for the accompanying XRF tomography reconstructions. Using this probe profile deconvolution with the proposed ML solution to enhance the spatial resolution of XRF microscopy will be broadly applicable across both functional materials and biological imaging with XRF and other related application areas.

This manuscript explores the reaction mechanisms of peptide-based biomineralization processes. Charged sidechains are known to play a role in silicate oligomerization, but the underlying mechanisms and energy landscapes have not been determined.

A system of x-ray imaging spectrometer (XRIS) has been implemented at the OMEGA Laser Facility and is capable of spatially and spectrally resolving x-ray self-emission from 5 to 40 keV. The system consists of three independent imagers with nearly orthogonal lines of sight for 3D reconstructions of the x-ray emission region. The distinct advantage of the XRIS system is its large dynamic range, which is enabled by the use of tantalum apertures with radii ranging from 50 μm to 1 mm, magnifications of 4 to 35×, and image plates with any filtration level. In addition, XRIS is capable of recording 1–100’s images along a single line of sight, facilitating advanced statistical inference on the detailed structure of the x-ray emitting regions. Properties such as P0 and P2 of an implosion are measured to 1% and 10% precision, respectively. Furthermore, T e can be determined with 5% accuracy.
Shock experiments are widely used to understand the mechanical and electronic properties of matter under extreme conditions. However, after shock loading to a Hugoniot state, a clear description of the post-shock thermal state and its impacts on materials is still lacking. We used diffraction patterns from 100-fs x-ray pulses to investigate the temperature evolution of laser-shocked Al–Zr metal film composites at time delays ranging from 5 to 75 ns driven by a 120-ps short-pulse laser. We found significant heating of both Al and Zr after shock release, which can be attributed to heat generated by inelastic deformation. A conventional hydrodynamic model that employs (i) typical descriptions of Al and Zr mechanical strength and (ii) elevated strength responses (which might be attributed to an unknown strain rate dependence) did not fully account for the measured temperature increase, which suggests that other strength-related mechanisms (such as fine-scale void growth) could play an important role in thermal responses under shock wave loading/unloading cycles. Our results suggest that a significant portion of the total shock energy delivered by lasers becomes heat due to defect-facilitated plastic work, leaving less converted to kinetic energy. This heating effect may be common in laser-shocked experiments but has not been well acknowledged. High post-shock temperatures may induce phase transformation of materials during shock release. Another implication for the study is the preservability of magnetic records from planetary surfaces that have a shock history from frequent impact events.

As inductive wireless charging reaches higher power levels, thermal management and mechanical durability become more critical. To address these concerns, past works have demonstrated the benefit of encapsulating coil assemblies in thermally conductive materials. However, due to the sensitivity of the MnZn ferrites commonly used in coil assemblies to mechanical stress, care must be taken to avoid creating large stresses in the ferrite that cause higher hysteresis loss. The stress formation in the encapsulant curing process is overviewed and modeled and an experiment is performed to demonstrate the effect in a small-scale coil assembly. Finally, the effect is shown in the reduced coil-coil efficiency of a first generation high power inductive power transfer prototype using a stiff epoxy compared to better performance in a second prototype using a softer thermally-conductive silicone encapsulant.

Summary No consensus has been reached on the relationship between CBFB‐MYH11 copies and prognosis. Of 1525 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, 58 with CBFB‐MYH11‐positive AML (16/58 patients with c‐kit mutation) were retrospectively analyzed with a median follow‐up duration of 29.8 (range: 4.8–74.4) months. Of these, 25/58 (43.1%) patients underwent allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT), 10 of whom had the c‐kit mutation. Of the 33 patients who did not undergo allo‐HSCT, recurrence in patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level >0.1% at any time after two consolidation cycles was significantly higher than in patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level <0.1% (61.9% vs. 0%, P = 0.001); further, the 3‐year relapse‐free survival (RFS; 31.4% vs. 100%, P = 0.004) and event‐free survival (EFS; 33.1% vs. 100%, P = 0.004) were significantly decreased in patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level >0.1% at any time after two consolidation cycles. The 3‐year RFS and EFS rates were lower in patients who did not receive allo‐HSCT than in those who did (31.4% vs 84.6%, P = 0.000; 31.4% vs. 80.8%, P = 0.001). CBFB‐MYH11‐positive AML patients with CBFB‐MYH11/ABL level >0.1% at any time after two cycles of consolidation had poor prognoses, and allo‐HSCT could improve their survival.
