Analysis of test data on the simplex strapdown navigation system

The results of a study of test data taken on the simplex strapdown navigation system were presented. That system consisted of the following components: strapdown platform, altimeter, digital computer, tape recorder, typewriter, and power source. The objective of these tests was to isolate error sources which may cause degradation of the system's accuracy and to recommend appropriate changes to the system test procedures or computer software. The following recommendations were made: (1) addition of a gyro compassing alignment program into the navigation program, (2) addition of line drivers at the signal processor end of the transmission line, (3) need for extensive laboratory testing to determine sensor misalignments, biases, and scale factors, (4) need to stabilize the power source to prevent transients during power transfer, (5) need to isolate and eliminate the source of the large noise inputs.

Track-train dynamic analysis and test program. Barber S-2 static test

The results of a static test of a Barber S-2 freight truck conducted to measure the stiffness and friction parameters of the modes of deformation which are being used in various mathematical models in the railroad industry were presented. Some difficulty was first experienced with the truck hardware since it was in an essentially new condition with many high spots causing interference. No difficulty was experienced once the interference was removed. The characteristics of the Barber S-2 are very similar to the ASF ride control truck. The major difference between the two trucks is the amount of friction between the bolster and side frames in both the vertical and lateral directions. The Barber S-2 has approximately twice the friction the ASF ride control truck has in the fully loaded condition. This does not necessarily imply that all trucks will have this same ratio of friction.

Analysis and tests of NASA coverted groove heat pipe

A low-cost thermal control heat pipe having nearly covered grooves extruded in aluminum was developed at NASA. Analytical predictions of transport capability are in excellent agreement with experimental results using ammonia. Axial heat transport predictions as a function of fluid charge are presented also for methane, ethane, propane, and butane. Experimental tests show performance considerably better than that of open groove extruded pipes and comparing favorably with that of more complicated arterial/wick configurations. For ammonia at 20 C, the covert groove pipe obtained a static wicking height of 2.5 cm and an axial heat transport capability of 143 W-m.

Analysis and test for space shuttle propellant dynamics: 1/60th scale model test results

During the abort sequence, the ET and orbiter separate under aerodynamic loading, with propellant remaining in the ET. The separation event included a seven second decelerating coast period during which the residual propellant accelerates relative to the ET/orbiter. At separation, ET clearance was primarily provided by aerodynamics acting on the ET to move it away. The motion of the propellant, primarily LOX, significantly influenced the resulting ET motion and could cause the ET to recontact the orbiter. A test program was conducted involving thirty-two drops with 1/60th scale models of the ET LOX tank. The objective was to acquire data on the nature of low g propellant reorientation, in the ET LOX tank, and to measure the forces exerted on the tank by the moving propellant.

Analysis and testing of adhesive bonds

An adhesive fracture mechanics approach is described with reference to the identification and design of the best tests for evaluating a given adhesive, the definition of the most meaningful fundamental parameters by which adhesives might be characterized, and the application of these parameters to the design of joints and to the prediction of their performance. Topics include standard adhesive test techniques, the theory of adhesive fracture, and adhesive fracture energy tests. Analytical methods and computer techniques for adhesive bonding, chemical and physical aspects of adhesive fracture, and specific applications and aspects of adhesive fracture mechanics are discussed.

Analysis and test for space shuttle propellant dynamics (1/10th scale model test results). Volume 1: Technical discussion

Space shuttle propellant dynamics during ET/Orbiter separation in the RTLS (return to launch site) mission abort sequence were investigated in a test program conducted in the NASA KC-135 "Zero G" aircraft using a 1/10th-scale model of the ET LOX Tank. Low-g parabolas were flown from which thirty tests were selected for evaluation. Data on the nature of low-g propellant reorientation in the ET LOX tank, and measurements of the forces exerted on the tank by the moving propellent will provide a basis for correlation with an analytical model of the slosh phenomenon.

Analysis and test for space shuttle propellant dynamics (1/10th scale model test results). Volume 2: 1/10th scale model test data

Thirty sets of test data selected from the 89 low-g aircraft tests flown by NASA KC-135 zero-g aircraft are listed in tables with their accompanying test conditions. The data for each test consists of the time history plots of digitalized data (in engineering units) and the time history plots of the load cell data transformed to the tank axis system. The transformed load cell data was developed for future analytical comparisons; therefore, these data were transformed and plotted from the time at which the aircraft Z axis acceleration passed through l-g. There are 14 time history plots per test condition. The contents of each plot is shown in a table.

Analysis and testing of numerical formulas for the initial value problem

Three computer programs for evaluating and testing numerical integration formulas used with fixed stepsize programs to solve initial value systems of ordinary differential equations are described. A program written in PASCAL SERIES, takes as input the differential equations and produces a FORTRAN subroutine for the derivatives of the system and for computing the actual solution through recursive power series techniques. Both of these are used by STAN, a FORTRAN program that interactively displays a discrete analog of the Liapunov stability region of any two dimensional subspace of the system. The derivatives may be used by CLMP, a FORTRAN program, to test the fixed stepsize formula against a good numerical result and interactively display the solutions.

Analysis of test system misalignment in the creep test

Sheet type rectangular 1100-0 aluminum specimens were tested. The creep strain at the geometric centerline of the specimen is different than that at the neutral axis, and decreases with time. The effect of misalignment, which decreases with creep time, is minimized when creep tests are conducted with long pullrods and large initial strain level (high creep stress).

Design, analysis, and tests of a shuttle-type heat-pipe-cooled leading edge

A one-half scale heat-pipe-cooled leading edge model was designed and fabricated to verify feasibility and performance of a full-scale Phase B shuttle orbiter design. Model performance was investigated experimentally by radiant heating and aerothermal tests and analytically by using a simple technique which predicts heat pipe start-up from the frozen state and also predicts transient and steady-state thermal behavior. Analytical results agree well with experimental results for start-up and steady-state heat pipe operation. The results indicate that variations in angle of attack and roll orientation had a negligible effect on heat pipe performance. The heat pipes effectively isothermalized the leading edge, and reduced peak temperatures to levels compatible with the use temperatures of superalloys. Results of these tests demonstrated the durability of the heat-pipe-cooled leading edge in withstanding earth-entry thermal and mechanical loads and indicate that the use of heat pipes in leading edge structures is a reliable concept for fully reusable hypersonic cruise and space transportation systems.

Analysis and test of bonded single lap joints with preformed adherends

A theoretical and experimental study has been conducted to investigate the load transfer of a single lap joint where the adherends have been preformed so that the angle between the line of action of the applied in-plane force and the bond line is reduced. The preforming of the adherend reduces the moment resultant in the adherend at the edge of the overlap region which reduces both the maximum peel and shear stresses in the adhesive, and gives a more uniform shear distribution in the adhesive. An increase in static load transfer of up to 120 percent has been shown, and several orders of magnitude increase in fatigue life have been achieved with modest preform angles. Thus, sizeable benefits can be obtained in the fatigue life or additional load capacity of bonded single lap joints by preforming the adherends.

Aerodynamic tests and analysis of a turbojet-boosted launch vehicle concept (spacejet) over a Mach number range of 1.50 to 2.86

Results from analytical and experimental studies of the aerodynamic characteristics of a turbojet-boosted launch vehicle concept through a Mach number range of 1.50 to 2.86 are presented. The vehicle consists of a winged orbiter utilizing an area-ruled axisymmetric body and two winged turbojet boosters mounted underneath the orbiter wing. Drag characteristics near zero lift were of prime interest. Force measurements and flow visualization techniques were employed. Estimates from wave drag theory, supersonic lifting surface theory, and impact theory are compared with data and indicate the ability of these theories to adequately predict the aerodynamic characteristics of the vehicle. Despite the existence of multiple wings and bodies in close proximity to each other, no large scale effects of boundary layer separation on drag or lift could be discerned. Total drag levels were, however, sensitive to booster locations.
