Visualizing the atomic-scale origin of metallic behavior in Kondo insulators

A Kondo lattice is often electrically insulating at low temperatures. However, several recent experiments have detected signatures of bulk metallicity within this Kondo insulating phase. In this study, we visualized the real-space charge landscape within a Kondo lattice with atomic resolution using a scanning tunneling microscope. We discovered nanometer-scale puddles of metallic conduction electrons centered around uranium-site substitutions in the heavy-fermion compound uranium ruthenium silicide (URu 2 Si 2 ) and around samarium-site defects in the topological Kondo insulator samarium hexaboride (SmB 6 ). These defects disturbed the Kondo screening cloud, leaving behind a fingerprint of the metallic parent state. Our results suggest that the three-dimensional quantum oscillations measured in SmB 6 arise from Kondo-lattice defects, although we cannot exclude other explanations. Finally, our imaging technique could enable the development of atomic-scale charge sensors using heavy-fermion probes.

Genetic and Antigenic Characterization of an Expanding H3 Influenza A Virus Clade in U.S. Swine Visualized by Nextstrain

Defining factors that influence spatial and temporal patterns of influenza A virus (IAV) is essential to inform vaccine strain selection and strategies to reduce the spread of potentially zoonotic swine-origin IAV. The relative frequency of detection of the H3 phylogenetic clade 1990.4.a (colloquially known as C-IVA) in U.S. swine declined to 7% in 2017 but increased to 32% in 2019. We conducted phylogenetic and phenotypic analyses to determine putative mechanisms associated with increased detection. We created an implementation of Nextstrain to visualize the emergence, spatial spread, and genetic evolution of H3 IAV in swine, identifying two C-IVA clades that emerged in 2017 and cocirculated in multiple U.S. states. Phylodynamic analysis of the hemagglutinin (HA) gene documented low relative genetic diversity from 2017 to 2019, suggesting clonal expansion. The major H3 C-IVA clade contained an N156H amino acid substitution, but hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assays demonstrated no significant antigenic drift. The minor HA clade was paired with the neuraminidase (NA) clade N2-2002B prior to 2016 but acquired and maintained an N2-2002A in 2016, resulting in a loss of antigenic cross-reactivity between N2-2002B- and -2002A-containing H3N2 strains. The major C-IVA clade viruses acquired a nucleoprotein (NP) of the H1N1pdm09 lineage through reassortment in the replacement of the North American swine-lineage NP. Instead of genetic or antigenic diversity within the C-IVA HA, our data suggest that population immunity to H3 2010.1 along with the antigenic diversity of the NA and the acquisition of the H1N1pdm09 NP gene likely explain the reemergence and transmission of C-IVA H3N2 in swine.

Visualizing Microbial Community Dynamics via a Controllable Soil Environment

Visualizing microbial community dynamics within soil environments remains challenging. Here, we developed a custom-built SoilBox system that facilitates probing various changes occurring in microbial community development and molecular processes when exposed to environmental perturbations (e.g., temperature changes, drought, nutrient availability). Using confocal microscopy along with mass spectrometry imaging, we demonstrate the power of this system by correlating microbial growth and spatial metabolic information from soil communities under different moisture regimes.

Spatiotemporal Visualization and Chemical Identification of the Metal Diffusion Layer at the Electrochemical Interface

The diffusion layer created by transition metal dissolution is ubiquitous at the electrochemical solid-liquid interface and plays a key role in determining electrochemical performance. Tracking the spatiotemporal dynamics of the diffusion layer has remained an unresolved challenge. With spatially resolved synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy and micro-X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we demonstrate the in situ visualization and chemical identification of the dynamic diffusion layer near the electrode surface under electrochemical operating conditions. Finally, our method allows for direct mapping of the reactive electrochemical interface and provides insights into engineering the diffusion layer for improving electrochemical performance.

IViz-OT (Intrusion Detection Visualizer for Operational Technology Network) [SWR-22-63]

The Visualizer dashboard provides grid operator highly-trusted alarming environment for an ongoing or potential cyber-attack based on system anomalies and network-based verification. Once anomalies are detected by the IDS tool (HIDES, NREL SWR-19-65), this platform stores the signatures or alert logs that are generated by the intrusion detector, lays out the detailed summary of the possible alerts, and maps these attacks with high-level scenarios. These scenarios are later combined to define a final event using a decision tree approach and a final report is generated out of this tool for further forensic analysis. It also supports authentication and authorization to support roles-based access control (RBAC) for users and a group of people.

Effective Visualization of Radar Data for Users Impacted by Color Vision Deficiency

Color vision deficiency (CVD) is a decreased ability to discern between particular colors. Eight percent of genetic males and half a percent of genetic females have some form of CVD, with many in the radar community falling into this group. When presenting data on a two-dimensional plane, it is common to use colors to represent values via a colormap. Colormap choice in the radar community is influenced by the ability to highlight scientifically interesting features in data, institutional choices, and domain dominance of legacy colormaps. The problem with these current colormaps is that many do not project well for those with CVD (i.e., green next to red). In working with the CVD community to address this problem, multiple colormaps for moments such as equivalent reflectivity factor and Doppler velocity were created for users with forms of CVD such as deuteranomaly, protanomaly, protanopia, and deuteranopia using Python tools such as colorspacious and viscm. We show how these colormaps can improve interpretability for four cases: a mesoscale convective system, a pyrocumulonimbus storm, a wintertime midlatitude cyclone, and widespread storms with a large bird migration. These new radar equivalent reflectivity factor, Doppler velocity, and polarization colormaps are designed to highlight rain, frozen precipitation, nonmeteorological targets, and velocity-based items, are perceptually uniform, and are visually friendly for those with CVD.

Multidimensional scaling informed by F -statistic: Visualizing grouped microbiome data with inference

Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is a widely used dimensionality reduction technique in microbial ecology data analysis that captures the multivariate structure of the data while preserving pairwise distances between samples. While improvements in MDS have enhanced the ability to reveal group-specific data patterns, these MDS-based methods require prior assumptions for inference, limiting their application in general microbiome analysis. Here, in this study, we introduce a new MDS-based ordination method, “F-informed MDS,” which configures the data distribution based on the F-statistic, the ratio of dispersion between groups sharing common and different characteristics. Using semisynthetic datasets, we demonstrate that the proposed method is robust to hyperparameter selection while maintaining statistical significance throughout the ordination process. Various quality metrics for evaluating dimensionality reduction confirm that F-informed MDS is comparable to state-of-the-art methods in preserving both local and global data structures. Its application to a diatom-associated bacterial community suggests the role of this new method in interpreting the community’s response to the host. Our approach offers a well-founded refinement of MDS that aligns with statistical test results, which can be beneficial for broader multidimensional data analyses in microbiology and ecology. This new visualization tool can be incorporated into standard microbiome data analyses.

Heat transfer and visual observation of pool boiling of next-generation low-pressure refrigerant: R1336mzz(Z)

R1336mzz(Z) is a non-flammable and non-toxic hydrofluoroolefin (HFO), which is a potential alternative working fluid for multiple applications such as centrifugal chillers, industrial high temperature heat pumps, and Organic Rankine Cycles. Pool boiling is one of the primary heat transfer modes in shell-and-tube evaporators, and there is limited data for R1336mzz(Z) due to its recent introduction. This study investigated the pool boiling characteristics of R1336mzz(Z) using a closed-loop apparatus. Heat transfer coefficients on a smooth aluminum surface were measured at various heat fluxes with a heating block, and the results were compared to predictions from various correlations. Additionally, a high-speed camera was employed to visualize and analyze the pool boiling behavior of this next-generation low-pressure refrigerant.
