Modification of the plasma-prepared As–Se–Te films and creation on their base the planar waveguides by continuous laser writing

As a result of the previous experiments (Mochalov et al. in Opt Quant Electron 49(8):274:1–274:11, 2017), it was found that the Te-based chalcogenide films prepared by plasma deposition have a transparency window in the range from 1.2 to 20 μm and cannot be modified in the two-photon absorption mode, and in the linear absorption mode only the thermal effects were observed leading to crystallization of the films or their destruction. In this work, PECVD-prepared As–Se–Te films were modified by continuous laser irradiation of different wavelengths—473, 632.8 and 808 nm. For the modification, samples with compositions As{sub 40}Se{sub 50}Te{sub 10} and As{sub 40}Se{sub 44}Te{sub 16} were deposited on a substrate of epi-polished crystalline sapphire. This paper presents the results of studying of the effect of continuous laser radiation on the optical and structural properties of the chalcogenide films samples. Also, planar waveguided structures based on the As–Se–Te films were formed and investigated.

Amplification of Waveguide Teleconnections in the Boreal Summer

While the influence of climate change on mid-latitude atmospheric circulation remains uncertain, hypotheses based on linear waveguide dynamics have been proposed suggesting amplification of circumglobal quasi-stationary Rossby wave events, which may have led to persistent and high-impact extremes in recent boreal summers. Furthermore, it is thus useful to synthesize these hypotheses and to discuss limitations of this simplified dynamical framework for explaining observed features.

Cost-efficiency enhancement of X- and Ku-band split waveguides for industrial accelerators

Compact microwave electron linear accelerators must operate at high frequencies in order to maintain tight SWaP (size, weight, and power) requirements, set by modern applications. Currently, the frequencies are practically limited to X- and Ku-bands because of the availability of MW-class magnetrons, required to achieve beam energies of several MeV, and tight fabrication tolerances. The latter is associated with micron-level accuracy and further waveguide frequency tuning process, both increasing its costs dramatically. By implying a novel split structure fabrication approach, it is possible to relax these tolerances to the values of 10–20 μm and eliminate the tuning step, greatly reducing their total costs. Finally, this paper presents the results of microwave measurements of split X- and Ku-band accelerating structures of different types and discusses the benefits of our fabrication approach.

Photoluminescence Enhancement, Blinking Suppression, and Improved Biexciton Quantum Yield of Single Quantum Dots in Zero Mode Waveguides

The capability of quantum dots to generate both single and multiexcitons can be harnessed for a wide variety of applications, including those that require high optical gain. Here, we use time-correlated photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy to demonstrate that the isolation of single CdSeTe/ZnS core–shell, nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) in Zero Mode Waveguides (ZMWs) leads to a significant modification in PL intensity, blinking dynamics, and biexciton behavior. QDs in aluminum ZMWs (AlZMWs) exhibited a 15-fold increase in biexciton emission, indicating a preferential enhancement of the biexciton radiative decay rate as compared to the single exciton rate. The increase in biexciton behavior was accompanied by a decrease in blinking events due to a shortening in the dark state residence time. These results indicate that plasmon mediated enhanced decay rates of QDs in AlZMWs lead to substantial changes in the photophysical properties of single quantum dots, including an increase in biexciton behavior.

Imaging Anisotropic Waveguide Exciton Polaritons in Tin Sulfide

In recent years, novel materials supporting in-plane anisotropic polaritons have attracted a great deal of research interest due to their capability of shaping nanoscale field distributions and controlling nanophotonic energy flows. Here we report a nano-optical imaging study of waveguide exciton polaritons (EPs) in tin sulfide (SnS) in the near-infrared (near-IR) region using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). With s-SNOM, we mapped in real space the propagative EPs in SnS, which show sensitive dependence on the excitation energy and sample thickness. Moreover, we found that both the polariton wavelength and propagation length are anisotropic in the sample plane. In particular, in a narrow spectral range from 1.32 to 1.44 eV, the EPs demonstrate quasi-one-dimensional propagation, which is rarely seen in natural polaritonic materials. Here, a further analysis indicates that the observed polariton anisotropy originates from the different optical band gaps and exciton binding energies along the two principal crystal axes of SnS.

Comparative analysis of waveguide plasmon – polariton refractometers based on excitation of surface, symmetric, and antisymmetric plasmon modes

We present the results of a numerical study of three waveguide refractometer configurations based on surface plasmon resonance: a refractometer without a buffer layer based on exciting a surface plasmon mode, and refractometers with a buffer layer based on exciting symmetric and antisymmetric plasmon modes. It is found that the best metrological characteristics are inherent in the refractometer based on the symmetric plasmon mode: the cumulative advantage in spectral sensitivity and width of the resonance dip attains two orders of magnitude as compared to the refractometer based on antisymmetric plasmon mode and one order of magnitude as compared to the refractometer without a buffer layer. For measuring local variations of the refractive index in a thin layer the advantage of using the symmetric plasmon mode is less expressed and amounts to nearly 20 and 6 times, respectively. It is shown that higher metrological characteristics of the refractometer based on symmetric plasmon mode are achieved at the expense of its compactness: the length of the sensitive segment in such a refractometer may exceed that of the refractometers without the buffer layer and those based on the antisymmetric mode by three orders of magnitude. The minimal length of the sensitive segment is possible in the refractometer based on the antisymmetric plasmon mode, which, however, possesses the worst metrological characteristics. As to the fabrication simplicity, the scheme without the buffer layer seems most attractive. This scheme occupies the intermediate position between the refractometers based on symmetric and antisymmetric plasmon modes both in metrological parameters and in the length of the sensitive segment.

Generation of subpicosecond pulses due to the development of modulation instability of whispering-gallery-mode wave packets in an optical waveguide with a travelling refractive-index wave

We consider the transformation of a quasi-continuous (with the duration greater than 1 ns) background tunnelling wave of the whispering gallery mode (WGM) type into ultrashort (pico- and subpicosecond) laser pulses, arising due to the development of modulation instability in a cylindrical optical waveguide with travelling refractive-index wave. It is shown that the peak power of the generated laser pulses can exceed the power of the background WGM by a few orders of magnitude. (paper)

1.5 – 1.6 μm semiconductor lasers with an asymmetric periodic optically coupled waveguide

High-power 1.5 – 1.6-μm semiconductor lasers with an asymmetric periodic optically coupled waveguide are developed and their current – voltage, light – current, and spectral characteristics are experimentally studied. The characteristics of these lasers are compared with the characteristics of traditional lasers based on double separate-confinement heterostructures. It is shown that the developed lasers have lower divergence and almost the same threshold and power characteristics as conventional lasers with Fabry – Perot resonators. The developed lasers with a cavity length of 1.6 mm and a mesa-stripe contact width of 3 μm mounted in a housing 11 mm in diameter have a power no lower than 200 mW at a pump current not exceeding 700 mA with a divergence of 25 – 35° versus 45° typical for conventional lasers. Nanostructured $\mathrm{GaAs/(Al,Ga)As}$ Waveguide for Low-Density Polariton Condensation from a Bound State in the Continuum

Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter states that arise from strong coupling between an exciton resonance and a photonic cavity mode. As bosonic excitations, they can undergo a phase transition to a condensed state that can emit coherent light without a population inversion. This aspect makes them good candidates for thresholdless lasers, yet short exciton-polariton lifetime has made it difficult to achieve condensation at very low power densities. In this sense, long-lived symmetry-protected states are excellent candidates to overcome the limitations that arise from the finite mirror reflectivity of monolithic microcavities. In this work we use a photonic symmetry-protected bound state in the continuum coupled to an excitonic resonance to achieve state-of-the-art polariton condensation threshold in a GaAs/(Al,Ga)As waveguide. Most important, we show the influence of fabrication control and how surface passivation via atomic layer deposition provides a way to reduce exciton quenching at the grating sidewalls.

Three-dimensional single-cell imaging with X-ray waveguides in the holographic regime

X-ray tomography at the level of single biological cells is possible in a low-dose regime, based on full-field holographic recordings, with phase contrast originating from free-space wave propagation. Building upon recent progress in cellular imaging based on the illumination by quasi-point sources provided by X-ray waveguides, here this approach is extended in several ways. First, the phase-retrieval algorithms are extended by an optimized deterministic inversion, based on a multi-distance recording. Second, different advanced forms of iterative phase retrieval are used, operational for single-distance and multi-distance recordings. Results are compared for several different preparations of macrophage cells, for different staining and labelling. As a result, it is shown that phase retrieval is no longer a bottleneck for holographic imaging of cells, and how advanced schemes can be implemented to cope also with high noise and inconsistencies in the data.

Conductive Spray Paint Fabricated Cylindrical Coplanar Waveguide for Noncontact Liquid-Level Sensing

A noncontact liquid-level sensor using a cylindrical coplanar waveguide (CCPW) is proposed. The concept is demonstrated using a prototype device made by directly spraying conductive paint on the outer surface of a glass cylinder. The position of the air–liquid interface is measured using the time-domain reflection (TDR) signal from the CCPW. The geometric parameters of the prototype sensor were optimized using a full-wave simulation tool. The experimental results show that the prototype CCPW-based liquid-level sensor has a resolution of 29.8μm over a range of 210 mm at the sweeping frequency bandwidth of 500 MHz–4 GHz. The tradeoff between the resolution and the measurement range was discussed. The proposed sensor provides a low-cost, easy-to-fabricate, and noncontact method for liquid-level measurement, which has potential applications in fuel storage, chemical production, and wastewater treatment.

Single Event Transient Response of Vertical and Lateral Waveguide-Integrated Germanium Photodiodes

Pulsed-laser induced single event current measurements on two geometries of waveguide-integrated germanium photodiodes were conducted over a range of operating voltages to examine the impact of photodiode geometry on the transient response. Vertical PIN photodiodes exhibit transients with a duration that is relatively independent of the operating voltage while the transient duration in lateral PIN photodiodes depends on operating voltage. Furthermore, the experimental measurements facilitate identification of device dimensions that impact the transient response. In this work, these results can be used to identify potential radiation mitigation strategies for photodiodes operating in a radiation environment. Understanding the implications of design choices is critical for designing integrated photonic systems that balance system performance with tolerance for radiation degradation.

Investigation of HgCdTe waveguide structures with quantum wells for long-wavelength stimulated emission

The photoluminescence and stimulated emission during interband transitions in quantum wells based on HgCdTe placed in an insulator waveguide based on a wide-gap CdHgTe alloy are studied. Heterostructures with quantum wells based on HgCdTe are of interest for the development of long-wavelength lasers in the range of 25–60 μm, which is currently unattainable for quantum-cascade lasers. Optimal designs of quantum wells for attainment of long-wavelength stimulated emission under optical pumping are discussed. It is shown that narrow quantum wells from pure HgTe appear to be more promising for long-wavelength lasers in comparison with wide (potential) wells from the alloy due to the suppression of Auger recombination. It is demonstrated that molecular-beam epitaxy makes it possible to obtain structures for the localization of radiation with a wavelength of up to 25 μm at a high growth rate. Stimulated emission is obtained for wavelengths of 14–6 μm with a threshold pump intensity in the range of 100–500 W/cm{sup 2} at 20 K.

The results of studying edge-emitting quantum-well lasers with a layered design having coupled planar waveguides, capable of suppressing the generation of excited transverse modes, are presented. In this case, a low internal loss (0.4 cm{sup –1}) is provided, combined with a small depth (~0.9 μm) of the active region, which results in a low thermal resistance of 6.0 (K/W) mm without a submount.

Study of the Auger Recombination Energy Threshold in a Series of Waveguide Heterostructures with HgTe/Cd{sub 0.7}Hg{sub 0.3}Te QWs Near 14 μm

Stimulated emission from a heterostructure with Hg{sub 0.903}Cd{sub 0.097}Te/Cd{sub 0.7}Hg{sub 0.3}Te quantum wells, placed in a waveguide layer of wide-gap CdHgTe, is obtained at wavelengths of 14–11 μm and a temperatures of 18–80 K. The threshold Auger recombination energy is calculated for a set of heterostructures with quantum wells of pure HgTe with a band gap of 90 meV (wavelength 14 μm). The possibility of fabricating lasers operating at 14 μm and working temperatures higher than that of liquid nitrogen is demonstrated.

2D Bragg Resonators Based on Planar Dielectric Waveguides (from Theory to Model-Based Testing)

Using analytical approaches and CST Microwave Studio 3D simulation, the electrodynamic characteristics of 2D Bragg resonators based on planar dielectric waveguides with doubly periodic corrugation are theoretically analyzed. Such resonators are of great interest to obtain directed narrow-band radiation in heterolasers with large active regions. Model electrodynamic experiments on the “cold” testing of such structures in the millimeter range are performed. Good agreement between the experimental and simulation results is shown, including the existence of the highest-Q mode within the Bragg reflection band in the absence of defects in the periodicity.

Optical ray paths in a quasi-periodic waveguide or a multipass cavity with smoothly varying properties

Ray paths in a quasi-periodic optical system (waveguide of cavity) with smoothly varying properties have been constructed along the ray path. The ray-transfer matrix is constructed for a large number of ray paths; it has been shown that the conventional stability condition (the modulus of the ray-transfer matrix trace for a ray path is smaller than two) does not ensure the boundedness of the beam path after a large number of paths.
