Local SU(2) × U(1) quark flavor symmetry in the RS bulk

We propose a model of quark flavor based on an additional SU(2) × U(1) local symmetry in a warped extra dimensional bulk. In contrast to other works, we break the additional gauge symmetry in the bulk via two complex scalars which acquire bulk vevs, rather than relying on brane-localized symmetry breaking. A gauge-covariant Kaluza-Klein decomposition of a theory with a bulk spontaneously broken gauge symmetry is performed, and exact expressions for the bulk profiles of all physical particles in such systems are given. The SM quark masses and mixings are then recreated using gauge-covariant bulk quark mass terms and Yukawa-like couplings to the new bulk scalars. A numerical sampling of points in the model parameter space that recreate the quark masses and mixings is performed at a KK scale of M KK = 5 TeV. We then compute the ΔF = 2 4-quark operators arising from our new flavor gauge bosons and scalars, and those arising from Kaluza-Klein modes of SM gauge bosons. By decoupling one of our bulk scalar fields to all quark fields except the right-handed up-like sector, we find that it is possible to greatly suppress tree-level contributions to the highly constrained Kaon mixing parameters. Instead, the dominant constraints on the model emerge from neutral Bd and D meson mixing. These constraints are explored with our numerical sampling of the model parameter space, and the specific contribution of the new flavor gauge bosons and scalars is discussed. We find that for a significant range of realistic flavor gauge couplings, the new gauge bosons compete with the normally dominant gluon flavor-changing currents, but flavor-changing operators emerging from the bulk scalar fields are highly suppressed. Finally, we briefly comment on flavor constraints that are independent of the flavor gauge sector arising from the Z$\overline{b}$ L b L coupling and rare top decays.

Searches for low-mass dimuon resonances

Searches are performed for a low-mass dimuon resonance, X, produced in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb -1 and collected with the LHCb detector. The X bosons can either decay promptly or displaced from the proton-proton collision, where in both cases the requirements placed on the event and the assumptions made about the production mechanisms are kept as minimal as possible. The searches for promptly decaying X bosons explore the mass range from near the dimuon threshold up to 60 GeV, with nonnegligible X widths considered above 20 GeV. The searches for displaced $X → µ^+µ^-$ decays consider masses up to 3 GeV. None of the searches finds evidence for a signal and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $X → µ^+µ^-$ cross sections, each with minimal model dependence. In addition, these results are used to place world-leading constraints on GeV-scale bosons in the two-Higgs-doublet and hidden-valley scenarios.

Phase diagram and spectroscopic signatures of a supersolid in the quantum ising magnet K 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2

Supersolid phases are quantum-entangled states of matter exhibiting the dual characteristics of superfluidity and solidity. Theory predicts that hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice can form such phases at half filling and near complete filling. Leveraging an exact mapping between bosons and spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ degrees of freedom, here we show that these phases are realized in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet K 2 Co(SeO 3 ) 2 . At zero field, neutron diffraction reveals the development of quasi-two-dimensional $\sqrt3$ x $\sqrt3$ magnetic order with Z 3 translational symmetry breaking (solidity), though with reduced amplitude indicating strong quantum fluctuations. These fluctuations manifest as equidistant bands of continuum neutron scattering, where the lowest-energy mode is gapless at K ($\frac{1}{3}$ $\frac{1}{3}$), consistent with broken U(1) spin rotational symmetry (superfluidity). For c-axis-oriented magnetic fields near saturation, we find a second phase consistent with a high-field supersolid. These two supersolids are separated by a pronounced 1/3 magnetization plateau phase that supports coherent spin waves, from which we determine the underlying spin Hamiltonian.

Impact of new experimental data on the C2HDM: the strong interdependence between LHC Higgs data and the electron EDM

The complex two-Higgs doublet model (C2HDM) is one of the simplest extensions of the Standard Model with a source of CP-violation in the scalar sector. It has a $\mathbb{Z}$ 2 symmetry, softly broken by a complex coefficient. There are four ways to implement this symmetry in the fermion sector, leading to models known as Type-I, Type-II, Lepton Specific and Flipped. In the latter three models, there is a priori the surprising possibility that the 125 GeV Higgs boson couples mostly as a scalar to top quarks, while it couples mostly as a pseudoscalar to bottom quarks. This “maximal” scenario was still possible with the data available in 2017. Since then, there have been more data on the 125 GeV Higgs boson, direct searches for CP-violation in angular correlations of $τ$-leptons produced in Higgs boson decays, new results on the electron electric dipole moment, new constraints from LHC searches for additional Higgs bosons and new results on $b$ → $sγ$ transitions. Highlighting the crucial importance of the physics results of LHC’s Run 2, we combine all these experiments and show that the “maximal” scenario is now excluded in all models. Still, one can have a pseudoscalar component in $hτ\overline{τ}$ couplings in the Lepton-Specific case as large as 87% of the scalar component for all mass orderings of the neutral scalar bosons.

NLO SMEFT electroweak corrections to Higgs boson decays to four leptons in the narrow width approximation

Some of the most precise measurements of Higgs boson couplings are from the Higgs decays to 4 leptons, where deviations from the Standard Model predictions can be quantified in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT). In this work, we present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) SMEFT electroweak calculation of the rate for H → ℓ + ℓ − Z which we combine with the NLO SMEFT result for Z → ℓ + ℓ − to obtain the NLO rate for the H → 4 lepton process in the narrow width approximation. The NLO calculation provides sensitivity to a wide range of SMEFT operators that do not contribute to the rate at lowest order and demonstrates the importance of including correlations between the effects of different operators when extracting limits on SMEFT parameters. We show that the extraction of the Higgs trilinear coupling from the decay H → ℓ + ℓ − Z , Z → ℓ + ℓ − in the narrow width approximation strongly depends on the contributions of other operators that first occur at NLO. Quantum order by disorder in frustrated spin nanotubes

Here we investigate quantum order by disorder in a frustrated spin nanotube formed by wrapping a J1–J2 Heisenberg model at 45° around a cylinder. Using Schwinger boson theory and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), we have computed the ground-state phase diagram to reveal a Z2 phase in which collinear spin stripes form a right- or left-handed helix around the nanotube. We have derived an analytic estimate for the critical η c = J 1 /2J 2 of the Z 2 -helical phase transition, which is in agreement with the DMRG results. By evaluating the entanglement spectrum and nonlocal string order parameters we discuss the topology of the Z 2 -helical phase.

Tunable exciton valley-pseudospin orders in moiré superlattices

Excitons in two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors have offered an attractive platform for optoelectronic and valleytronic devices. Further realizations of correlated phases of excitons promise device concepts not possible in the single particle picture. Here we report tunable exciton “spin” orders in WSe 2 /WS 2 moiré superlattices. We find evidence of an in-plane (xy) order of exciton “spin”—here, valley pseudospin—around exciton filling v ex = 1, which strongly suppresses the out-of-plane “spin” polarization. Upon increasing v ex or applying a small magnetic field of ~10 mT, it transitions into an out-of-plane ferromagnetic (FM-z) spin order that spontaneously enhances the “spin” polarization, i.e., the circular helicity of emission light is higher than the excitation. The phase diagram is qualitatively captured by a spin-1/2 Bose–Hubbard model and is distinct from the fermion case. Our study paves the way for engineering exotic phases of matter from correlated spinor bosons, opening the door to a host of unconventional quantum devices.

Measurement of the Higgs boson production rate in association with top quarks in final states with electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying tau leptons at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

The rate for Higgs (${\mathrm{H}} $) bosons production in association with either one (${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $) or two (${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $) top quarks is measured in final states containing multiple electrons, muons, or tau leptons decaying to hadrons and a neutrino, using proton–proton collisions recorded at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\text {Te}\text {V} $ by the CMS experiment. The analyzed data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137$\,\text {fb}^{-1}$. The analysis is aimed at events that contain ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{W}} {\mathrm{W}} $, ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\tau } {\tau } $, or ${\mathrm{H}} \rightarrow {\mathrm{Z}} {\mathrm{Z}} $ decays and each of the top quark(s) decays either to lepton+jets or all-jet channels. Sensitivity to signal is maximized by including ten signatures in the analysis, depending on the lepton multiplicity. The separation among ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $, ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and the backgrounds is enhanced through machine-learning techniques and matrix-element methods. The measured production rates for the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ and ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ signals correspond to $0.92 \pm 0.19\,\text {(stat)} ^{+0.17}_{-0.13}\,\text {(syst)} $ and $5.7 \pm 2.7\,\text {(stat)} \pm 3.0\,\text {(syst)} $ of their respective standard model (SM) expectations. The corresponding observed (expected) significance amounts to 4.7 (5.2) standard deviations for ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $, and to 1.4 (0.3) for ${\mathrm{t}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production. Assuming that the Higgs boson coupling to the tau lepton is equal in strength to its expectation in the SM, the coupling $y_{{\mathrm{t}}}$ of the Higgs boson to the top quark divided by its SM expectation, $\kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}=y_{{\mathrm{t}}}/y_{{\mathrm{t}}}^{\mathrm {SM}}$, is constrained to be within $-0.9< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< -0.7$ or $0.7< \kappa _{{\mathrm{t}}}< 1.1$, at 95% confidence level. This result is the most sensitive measurement of the ${\mathrm{t}} {{\overline{{{\mathrm{t}}}}}} {\mathrm{H}} $ production rate to date.

Effective field theory of Stückelberg vector bosons

We explore the effective field theory of a vector field $X^μ$ that has a Stückelberg mass. The absence of a gauge symmetry for $X^μ$ implies Lorentz-invariant operators are constructed directly from Xμ. Beyond the kinetic and mass terms, allowed interactions at the renormalizable level include $X_μX^μH^†H, (X_μX^μ)^2$, and $X_μj^μ$, where $j^μ$ is a global current of the SM or of a hidden sector. We show that all of these interactions lead to scattering amplitudes that grow with powers of $\sqrt{s}/m_X$, except for the case of $X_μj^μ$ where $j^μ$ is a nonanomalous global current. The latter is well-known when $\textit{X}$ is identified as a dark photon coupled to the electromagnetic current, often written equivalently as kinetic mixing between $\textit{X}$ and the photon. The power counting for the energy growth of the scattering amplitudes is facilitated by isolating the longitudinal enhancement. We examine in detail the interaction with an anomalous global vector current $X_μj^μ_{\text{anom}}$, carefully isolating the finite contribution to the fermion triangle diagram. We calculate the longitudinally-enhanced observables $Z → X_γ$ (when $m_X < m_Z), f\bar{f} → X_γ$, and $Z_γ → Z_γ$ when $\textit{X}$ couples to the baryon number current. Introducing a "fake" gauge-invariance by writing $X^μ = A^μ – ∂^μπ/m_X$, the would-be gauge anomaly associated with $A_μj^μ_{\text{anom}}$ is canceled by $j^μ_{\text{anom}}∂_μπ/m_X$; this is the four-dimensional Green-Schwarz anomaly-cancellation mechanism at work. Our analysis demonstrates there is a much larger set of possible interactions that an EFT with a Stückelberg vector field can have, revealing scattering amplitudes that grow with energy. The growth of these amplitudes can be tamed by a dark Higgs sector, but this requires dark Higgs boson interactions (and reintroduces fine-tuning in the dark Higgs sector) that can be separated from X interactions only in the limit $g \ll 1$ .

W -boson exotic decay into three charged leptons at the LHC

We investigate the W boson’s exotic decay channel, W → ℓ ℓ ℓ ν , at the LHC. Although the four-body final states suppress the decay branching ratio, the large production of W bosons makes detecting and precisely measuring this decay probability entirely feasible. Our simulation study indicates that this tiny branching ratio can be measured with subpercent precision at the HL-LHC. This decay channel can also constrain Standard Model extensions. Using the L μ − L τ model as a benchmark, we find that the current bound on the gauge coupling for Z ′ mass in the range of [4, 75] GeV can significantly improve. Search for high-mass exclusive γγ → WW and γγ → ZZ production in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search is performed for exclusive high-mass γγ → WW and γγ → ZZ production in proton-proton collisions using intact forward protons reconstructed in near-beam detectors, with both weak bosons decaying into boosted and merged jets. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS and TOTEM experiments at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 100 fb -1 . No excess above the standard model background prediction is observed, and upper limits are set on the pp → pWWp and pp → pZZp cross sections in a fiducial region defined by the diboson invariant mass m(VV) > 1 TeV (with V = W, Z) and proton fractional momentum loss 0.04 < ξ < 0.20. The results are interpreted as new limits on dimension-6 and dimension-8 anomalous quartic gauge couplings.

The Future Circular Collider: a Summary for the US 2021 Snowmass Process

In this white paper for the 2021 Snowmass process, we give a description of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC) project and its physics program. The paper summarizes and updates the discussion submitted to the European Strategy on Particle Physics. After construction of an approximately 90 km tunnel, an electron-positron collider based on established technologies allows world-record instantaneous luminosities at center-of-mass energies from the Z resonance up to tt thresholds, enabling a rich set of fundamental measurements including Higgs couplings determinations at the sub percent level, precision tests of the weak and strong forces, and searches for new particles, including dark matter, both directly and via virtual corrections or mixing. Among other possibilities, the FCC-ee will be able to (i) indirectly discover new particles coupling to the Higgs and/or electroweak bosons up to scales around 7 and 50 TeV, respectively; (ii) perform competitive SUSY tests at the loop level in regions not accessible at the LHC; (iii) study heavy-flavor and tau physics in ultra-rare decays beyond the LHC reach, and (iv) achieve the best potential in direct collider searches for dark matter, sterile neutrinos, and axion-like particles with masses up to around 90 GeV. The tunnel can then be reused for a proton-proton collider, establishing record center-of-mass collision energy, allowing unprecedented reach for direct searches for new particles up to the around 50 TeV scale, and a diverse program of measurements of the Standard Model and Higgs boson, including a precision measurement of the Higgs self-coupling, and conclusively testing weakly-interacting massive particle scenarios of thermal relic dark matter.

Four-fermion deformations of the massless Schwinger model and confinement

We consider the massless charge-N Schwinger model and its deformation with two four-fermion operators. Without the deformations, this model exhibits chiral symmetry breaking without confinement. It is usually asserted that the massless Schwinger model is always deconfined and a string tension emerges only when a mass for the fermion field is turned on. We show that in the presence of these four-fermion operators, the massless theory can in fact confine. One of the four-fermion deformations is chirally neutral, and is a marginal deformation. The other operator can be relevant or irrelevant, and respects a Z 2 subgroup of chiral symmetry for even N, hence forbidding a mass term. When it is relevant, even the exactly massless theory exhibits both confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. The construction is analogous to QCD(adj) in 2d. While the theory without four-fermion deformations is deconfined, the theory with these deformations is generically in a confining phase. We study the model on R 2 using bosonization, and also analyze the mechanism of confinement on R × S 1 , where we find that confinement is driven by fractional instantons.

S-duality in $ T\overline{T} $-deformed CFT

$ T\overline{T} $ deformed conformal field theories can be reformulated as worldsheet theories of non-critical strings. We use this correspondence to compute and study the $ T\overline{T} $ deformed partition sum of a symmetric product CFT. We find that it takes the form of a partition sum of a second quantized string theory with a worldsheet given by the product of the seed CFT and a gaussian sigma model with the two-torus as target space. We show that deformed symmetric product theory admits a natural UV completion that exhibits a strong weak coupling Z 2 duality that interchanges the momentum and winding numbers and maps the $ T\overline{T} $-coupling λ to its inverse 1/λ. The Z 2 duality is part of a full O(2, 2, Z)-duality group that includes a PSL(2, Z) acting on the complexified $ T\overline{T} $ coupling. The duality symmetry eliminates the appearance of complex energies at strong coupling for all seed CFTs with central charge c ≤ 6.

Degree of Quantumness in Quantum Synchronization

We introduce the concept of degree of quantumness in quantum synchronization, a measure of the quantum nature of synchronization in quantum systems. Following techniques from quantum information, we propose the number of non-commuting observables that synchronize as a measure of quantumness. This fgure of merit is compatible with already existing synchronization measurements, and it captures diferent physical properties. We illustrate it in a quantum system consisting of two weakly interacting cavity-qubit systems, which are coupled via the exchange of bosonic excitations between the cavities. Moreover, we study the synchronization of the expectation values of the Pauli operators and we propose a feasible superconducting circuit setup. Finally, we discuss the degree of quantumness in the synchronization between two quantum van der Pol oscillators.

Proximate spin liquid and fractionalization in the triangular antiferromagnet KYbSe 2

The Heisenberg triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid and its phase transitions to nearby magnetic orders have received much theoretical attention, but clear experimental manifestations of these states are rare. Here we demonstrate that a spin-half delafossite material, namely, KYbSe 2 , shows close proximity to the triangular-lattice Heisenberg quantum spin liquid. Using neutron scattering, we identify a diffuse continuum with a sharp lower bound within the measured spectra. Applying entanglement witnesses to the data indicates multipartite entanglement spread between its neighbours, and an analysis of its magnetic-exchange couplings reveals close proximity to the theoretical quantum spin-liquid phase. The key features of the data are reproduced by Schwinger boson theory and tensor network calculations with a substantial next-nearest-neighbour coupling. The strength of the dynamical structure factor at the Brillouin-zone K point shows a scaling collapse down to 0.3 K, indicating the existence of a second-order quantum phase transition. Finally, comparing this with previous theoretical work suggests that the proximate phase at a larger next-nearest-neighbour coupling is a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid, resolving a long-debated issue. Search for long-lived particles decaying to e± μ∓ ν

Long-lived particles decaying to e±μ∓ν, with masses between 7 and 50GeV/c 2 and lifetimes between 2 and 50 ps, are searched for by looking at displaced vertices containing electrons and muons of opposite charges. The search is performed using 5.4 fb -1 of p p collisions collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$=13TeV. Three mechanisms of production of long-lived particles are considered: the direct pair production from quark interactions, the pair production from the decay of a Standard-Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of 125GeV/c 2 , and the charged current production from an on-shell W boson with an additional lepton. No evidence of these long-lived states is obtained and upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction are set on the different production modes.
