Tradeoff between Intermolecular Interaction and Backbone Disorder by High Molecular Dipole Block for Improving Blend Morphology of Polymer Solar Cells

Constructing terpolymer has attracted increasing attention as a strategy to improve the performance of polymer solar cell. Terpolymer usually offers an opportunity to lower the frontier molecular orbital energy level, introduces additional absorption band and sometimes optimizes the morphology of the active blend. Generally, the additional segment in terpolymer backbone inevitably introduces backbone disorder, which causes entropy rises. However, selecting a suitable dipole unit introduces extra driving forces for crystallization by enhancing intermolecular interactions. This provides a handy knob for tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, thus regulating the blend morphology. In this study, a high dipole and electron-deficient group of pyrrolo[3,4-f ]benzotriazole-5,7(6H)-dione (TzBI) is incorporated into the high-performance donor polymer and a series of terpolymers with different content of TzBI are designed. As expected, the morphology is optimized gradually for improving charge generation and charge transport, also suppressing charge recombination. The champion device with 10% TzBI exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.36%, which is 5% increase compared to the controlled device. This study presents a charming terpolymer strategy by highly electron-deficient and high dipole segment to realize a tradeoff between intermolecular interaction and backbone disorder, facilitating the optimization of morphology and elevation of fill factor and device efficiency.

Encapsulating High–Temperature Superconducting Twisted van der Waals Heterostructures Blocks Detrimental Effects of Disorder

High-temperature cuprate superconductors based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures hold high technological promise. One of the obstacles hindering their progress is the detrimental effect of disorder on the properties of the vdW-devices-based Josephson junctions (JJs). Here, a new method of fabricating twisted vdW heterostructures made of Bi 2 Sr 2 CuCa 2 O 8+δ , crucially improving the JJ characteristics and pushing them up to those of the intrinsic JJs in bulk samples, is reported. The method combines cryogenic stacking using a solvent-free stencil mask technique and covering the interface by insulating hexagonal boron nitride crystals. Despite the high-vacuum condition down to 10 –6 mbar in the evaporation chamber, the interface appears to be protected from water molecules during the in situ metal deposition only when fully encapsulated. Comparing the current-voltage curves of encapsulated and unencapsulated interfaces, it is revealed that the encapsulated interfaces' characteristics are crucially improved, so that the corresponding JJs demonstrate high critical currents and sharpness of the superconducting transition comparable to those of the intrinsic JJs. Finally, it is shown that the encapsulated heterostructures are more stable over time.

Binary Blend All‐Polymer Solar Cells with a Record Efficiency of 17.41% Enabled by Programmed Fluorination Both on Donor and Acceptor Blocks

Abstract Despite remarkable breakthrough made by virtue of “polymerized small‐molecule acceptor (PSMA)” strategy recently, the limited selection pool of high‐performance polymer acceptors and long‐standing challenge in morphology control impede their further developments. Herein, three PSMAs of PYDT‐2F, PYDT‐3F, and PYDT‐4F are developed by introducing different fluorine atoms on the end groups and/or bithiophene spacers to fine‐tune their optoelectronic properties for high‐performance PSMAs. The PSMAs exhibit narrow bandgap and energy levels that match well with PM6 donor. The fluorination promotes the crystallization of the polymer chain for enhanced electron mobility, which is further improved by following n ‐doping with benzyl viologen additive. Moreover, the miscibility is also improved by introducing more fluorine atoms, which promotes the intermixing with PM6 donor. Among them, PYDT‐3F exhibits well‐balanced high crystallinity and miscibility with PM6 donor; thus, the layer‐by‐layer processed PM6/PYDT‐3F film obtains an optimal nanofibril morphology with submicron length and ≈23 nm width of fibrils, facilitating the charge separation and transport. The resulting PM6/PYDT‐3F devices realizes a record high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.41% and fill factor of 77.01%, higher than the PM6/PYDT‐2F (PCE = 16.25%) and PM6/PYDT‐4F (PCE = 16.77%) devices.

Synergistic Self-Assembly of Oxoanions and d-Block Metal Ions with Heteroditopic Receptors into Triple-Stranded Helicates

Cooperativity effects among the interconnected anion and cation binding sites can profoundly alter the performance of heteroditopic receptors in selective ion pair recognition, processes that are oftentimes pertinent to biological systems and chemical separations. In this paper, we report the effect of the linker that connects both binding sites on self-assembly of heteroditopic receptors in the presence of divalent first-row transition metal salts in solution and solid phase. Introduction of backbone flexibility in the receptor results in the formation of triple-stranded ion-pair helicates with an extraordinary selectivity towards CuSO 4 through an anion-induced fit.

RNA oligomers at atomic resolution containing 1‐methylpseudouridine, an essential building block of mRNA vaccines

Abstract All widely used mRNA vaccines against COVID‐19 contain in their sequence 1‐methylpseudouridine ( m1Ψ ) instead of uridine. In this publication, we report two high resolution crystal structures (at up to 1.01 and 1.32 Å, respectively) of one such double‐stranded 12‐mer RNA sequence crystallized in two crystal forms. The structures are compared with similar structures which do not contain this modification. Additionally, the X‐ray structure of 1‐methyl‐pseudouridine itself was determined.

Revealing the Chemical State of Palladium in Operating In 2 O 3 Gas Sensors: Metallic Pd Enhances Sensing Response and Intermetallic In x Pd y Compound Blocks It

The sensing response of metal oxides activated with noble metal nanoparticles is significantly influenced by changes to the chemical state of corresponding elements under operating conditions. Here, a PdO/rh-In 2 O3 consisting of PdO nanoparticles loaded onto rhombohedral In 2 O 3 was studied as a gas sensor for H 2 gas (100–40000 ppm in an oxygen-free atmosphere) in the temperature range of 25–450 °C. The phase composition and chemical state of elements were examined by resistance measurements combined with synchrotron-based in situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. As found, PdO/rh-In 2 O 3 undergoes a series of structural and chemical transformations during operation: from PdO to Pd/PdH x and finally to the intermetallic In x Pd y phase. The maximal sensing response (R N2 /R H2 ) of ~5 · 10 7 towards 40000 ppm (4 vol %) H 2 at 70 °C is correlated with the formation of PdH 0.706 /Pd. The In x Pd y intermetallic compounds formed around 250 °C significantly decrease the sensing response.

Shedding Light on the Vibrational Signatures in Halogen‐Bonded Graphitic Carbon Nitride Building Blocks

Abstract The relative contributions of halogen and hydrogen bonding to the interaction between graphitic carbon nitride monomers and halogen bond (XB) donors containing C−X and C≡C bonds were evaluated using computational vibrational spectroscopy. Conventional probes into select vibrational stretching frequencies can often lead to disconnected results. To elucidate this behavior, local mode analyses were performed on the XB donors and complexes identified previously at the M06‐2X/aVDZ‐PP level of theory. Due to coupling between low and high energy C−X vibrations, the C≡C stretch is deemed a better candidate when analyzing XB complex properties or detecting XB formation. The local force constants support this conclusion, as the C≡C values correlate much better with the σ ‐hole magnitude than their C−X counterparts. The intermolecular local stretching force constants were also assessed, and it was found that attractive forces other than halogen bonding play a supporting role in complex formation.

Triplet‐Singlet Emission of d‐Block Metal Complexes Characterized by Spin‐Orbit Natural Transition Orbitals

Abstract Spin‐orbit natural transition orbital (SO‐NTO) methodology, recently developed in our group for complete and restricted active space (CAS/RAS) wavefunction calculations, is applied to analyze triplet‐to‐singlet emission in transition metal complexes. The lowest‐energy (longest‐wavelength) spin‐forbidden transition is studied for for [Ir(pbt)2(acac)] and [Re(CO)4(pbt)] and the complexes [W(CO)4(bpy)] and [Mo(CO)4(bpy)]. For the latter complexes, spin‐forbidden transitions from higher spin‐triplet levels are additionally analyzed. SO‐NTOs are compared with spin‐free NTOs for the transitions under consideration. The major assignment of a spin‐forbidden transition is obtained from the spin‐free NTO analysis, while the source of intensity of the electronic transition is revealed by the SO‐NTOs.

Poly(ether‐block‐amide) membrane with deformability and adjustable surface hydrophilicity for water purification

Abstract Freshwater resources are currently insufficient, and another form of freshwater resources, namely, ice, is very interesting except for the issue of how to use new materials for effective purification during the processing procedure. In this article, a new membrane material with multisize pore structure in the cross‐section and intact thin skin layer on the upper and lower surfaces was successfully prepared by adding porogen, filler and setting heating environment during the phase separation process. The membrane exhibits excellent axial deformability, and its elongation at break can reach to 160% strain. Meanwhile, they all show elastic deformation behavior in the range from −60 to 100°C. Even if high content of hydrophobic filler is compounded into these membranes, that is, 5.7 wt% carbon tube content, water contact angle of membrane's surface is only 72.5°, demonstrating obvious hydrophilicity. In addition, in the water purification process, the adsorption rate constant reached ideal value of 0.26 s −1 , and the equilibrium adsorption capacity was about 2.8 g/g, showing fast and efficient water purification ability. In the mode of external heating source or the membrane's heat dissipation, these prepared membranes can melt the ice to obtain purified water and exhibit a controllable purification ability in this process.

Ion‐Conducting, Electron‐Blocking Layer for High‐Performance Solid Electrolytes

Lithium metal batteries bring greater promise for energy density, often relying on solid‐state electrolytes to meet critical benchmarks. However, Li dendrite formation is a prevailing problem that limits the cycle life and Coulombic efficiency of solid‐state Li metal batteries. For the first time, a thin (<100 nm) layer of electronically insulating, ionically conducting lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is applied using atomic layer deposition between a Li anode and garnet Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO). The performance of a conformal LiPON layer as an electron barrier in symmetric Li‐LLZO cells is observed through potential step chronoamperometry, galvanostatic cycling, electron microscopy, and various spectroscopic techniques. The LiPON‐coated LLZO achieves 100 times lower electronic conductance than LLZO alone. Cycling carried out at 0.1 mA cm −2 for 100 cycles demonstrates that suppression of electron pathways into the bulk solid electrolyte improves the cycle life of a lithium metal cell. These findings suggest an electronic conductivity effect in solid‐state electrolytes. A strategy is demonstrated to design thin‐film (LiPON)‐modulated bulk solid‐state electrolytes (LLZO) capable of maintaining high ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability while reducing the effective electronic conductivity, which results in significantly decreased dendrite formation, improved cycle life, and greater interfacial integrity between the electrolyte and a Li anode.

High-performance n-Type Polymers Based on Multiple Electron-withdrawing Groups Decorated ( E )-1,2-Di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene Building Blocks

The performance of n-type conjugated polymers lags far behind that of p-type polymers, which significantly restricts the development of organic electronics. The (E)-1,2-di(thiophen-2-yl)ethene (TVT) unit, owing to its unique advantages, has been widely applied in the design of p-type polymer semiconductors. Previous studies have demonstrated that introducing electron-withdrawing groups can lower the frontier orbital energy levels of polymers and enhance electron injection/transporting capabilities. Based on this, we proposed incorporating multiple electronwithdrawing groups, such as amide groups, fluorine atoms, and cyano groups, into the polymer backbones of TVT-based polymer to facilitate the electron transport. Here, we successfully designed and synthesized the polymers TVTDA-4FTVT and TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. Both polymers exhibited low frontier orbital energy levels. Due to its significantly higher crystallization tendency and favorable intermolecular packing structure, the organic field-effect transistor (OFET) device based on TVTDA-4FTVT demonstrated an electron mobility one order of magnitude higher than that of TVTDA-2F2CNTVT. TVTDA-4FTVT showed the highest electron mobility of 0.87 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 , while TVTDA-2F2CNTVT exhibited the highest electron mobility of 0.049 cm 2 ·V −1 ·s −1 . Owing to its deeper lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level, the OFET devices based on TVTDA-2F2CNTVT showed good air stability after being placed in a natural environment for 15 d.

A tailored deep eutectic solvent for high-yield conversion of poplar residues to bio-based building blocks at mild conditions

The generation of condensed compounds in a deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment has become a paramount factor that inhibits the further conversion of pretreated cellulose-rich substrate. Here, this study proposed a novel three-constituent DES system for the value-added utilization of poplar residues by efficiently suppressing hemicellulose derived condensation reactions. The results showed that adding ethanol into the DES system could effectively deconstruct the recalcitrant structure of poplar residues, simultaneously hindering the condensed composition formation. Under optimum ethanol addition (30%), the maximum xylan and lignin removal of 87.94% and 90.99% could be achieved, with more than 90.47% of glucan being preserved. With this, the glucan enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency was remarkably improved to 100% under the pretreatment conditions of 100 °C for 60 min, which was 84.69 times higher than the regular DES-pretreated poplar residues (1.17%). The working mechanism of relieving condensation reactions was characterized by Py-GC–MS, NMR, SEM, FTIR, and others. The results demonstrated that the addition of ethanol could regulate the degradation/conversion pathway of hemicellulose and lignin precipitation, thus inhibit the formation of condensed compounds during the pretreatment.
