Transportation Energy: A Comparison Including and Excluding Upstream Energy

Thirty-eight editions of the Transportation Energy Data Book (Data Book) have been published since the report began in 1976. It was designed as a desk-top reference of statistics and information that characterize transportation activity. The most recent Data Book, edition 38, has 226 tables and 70 figures in the body of the report, with an additional 51 tables in appendices. One of the most-often used tables in the Data Book is referred to by the authors as “the big energy table.” It has transportation energy use in British thermal units (Btu) by mode and fuel type. The data are compiled from about 20 different sources and combined to create a detailed picture of transportation energy use. From the first edition to edition 35 of the Data Book, electricity use in the big energy table was converted from the original kilowatt-hours (kWh) to Btu using the net generation heat rate for fossil fuels. In those days, electricity was used mainly by transit rail. As electricity began to be used in the highway modes with consumer sales of electric vehicles, that process was revisited. Since energy use in the Data Book’s big energy table for all other fuels did not include the upstream energy to create the fuel, it seemed inconsistent to include upstream energy for generation of electricity. Beginning with edition 36, electricity use for the big energy table was converted from kilowatt hours to Btu using the heat content of electricity. Using heat content instead of net generation reduced electricity use data by about two-thirds. Feedback in recent years on the change in process for electricity led to an investigation of the differences in transportation energy use when adding estimates of upstream energy use to all the fuels used in transportation. This report documents the result of that effort.

Design of Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines Second Edition

This book intends to build a bridge for the student and the young engineer: to link the rocket propulsion fundamentals and elements (which are well covered in the literature) with the actual rocket engine design and development work as it is carried out in industry (which is very little, if at all covered in literature). The book attempts to further the understanding of the realistic application of liquid rocket propulsion theories, and to help avoid or at least reduce time and money consuming errors and disappointments. In so doing, it also attempts to digest and consolidate numerous closely related subjects, hitherto often treated as separate, bringing them up to date at the same time. The book was written "on the job" for use by those active in all phases of engine systems design, development, and application, in industry as well as government agencies. Since it addresses itself to human beings set out to create new machines, rather than describing machines about to dominate man, the language chosen may not always be "functional" in the strict sense of the word. The book presents sufficient detail to familiarize and educate thoroughly those responsible for various aspects of liquid propellant rocketry, including engine systems design, engine development, and flight vehicle application. It should enable the rocket engineer to conduct, independently, complete or partial engine systems preliminary detail designs and to understand and judge the activities in, and the problems, limitations, and "facts of life~ of the various subsystems making up a complete engine system. It also attempts to educate those ultimately interested in specialized subsystems and component design (thrust chamber, turbopump, control valves, etc.) about their own as well as neighboring subsystems and about the complete engine system. This should enable the student to prepare realistic analytical calculations and design layouts with a long headstart toward the final specialized designs for subsystem production release. Special emphasis has been placed on engine flight application to stimulate engine systems and subsystem designers to think in these terms from the outset. The book is intended as a textbook, with specific consideration of the teacher without industry experience. We hope it will stimulate those desiring to specialize in the area of a rocket engine subsystem by supplying adequate information to enable them to benefit fully from the specialized literature. Thus, it provides a realistic expert introduction for those joining the liquid propellant rocket engine field.

Gamma-Ray Astrophysics: New Insight Into the Universe

During the 15 years that have passed since the first edition of this book was published, there has been a major increase in our knowledge of gamma-ray astronomy. Much of this advance arises from the extensive results that have been forthcoming from the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. There has been the discovery of a new class of gamma-ray objects, namely high-energy gamma- ray-emitting blazars, a special class of Active Galactic Nuclei, whose basic high-energy properties now seem to be understood. A much improved picture of our galaxy now exists in the frequency range of gamma rays. The question of whether cosmic rays are galactic or metagalactic now seems settled with certainty. Significant new information exists on the gamma-ray properties of neutron star pulsars, Seyfert galaxies, and gamma-ray bursts. Substantial new insight has been obtained on solar phenomena through gamma-ray observations. Hence, this seemed to be an appropriate time to write a new edition of this book to add the important scientific implications of these many new findings. The special importance of gamma-ray astrophysics had long been recognized by many physicists and astronomers, and theorists had pursued many aspects of the subject well before the experimental results began to become available. The slower development of the experimental side was not because of a lack of incentive, but due to the substantial experimental difficulties that had to be overcome. Thus, as the gamma-ray results became available in much greater number and detail, it was possible to build upon the theoretical work that already existed and to make substantial progress in the study of many of the phenomena involved. Consequently, a much better understanding of many of the astrophysical phenomena mentioned here and others is now possible. Our principal aims in writing this book are the same as they were for the first edition: to provide a text which describes the significance of gamma-ray astrophysics and to assemble in one place a treatment of gamma rays emitted from bodies in the solar i system, from objects in our galaxy, as well as from interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar medium, and from beyond our galaxy. Thus, this book is intended for those in astrophysics who wish to have the opportunity to learn more about the evolving field of gamma-ray astronomy and its relationship to the high-energy, evolutionary processes occurring in the universe. The last three chapters of the book provide a general discussion of the experimental aspects of the field that seemed best treated together, separately from the astrophysical aspects of gamma-ray astronomy that are discussed in the first ten chapters.

A Systems Analysis Approach to Understanding the Physiological Adaptation to Spaceflight

This book is a summary of interdisciplinary research (physiology, space medicine, engineering, computer science, mathematics) that spans two decades (1972-1992). The research was an attempt to use systems analysis, mathematical modeling, computer simulations, and database systems to integrate the biomedical spaceflight data that was being collected during this period. The goal of the effort was to achieve a better understanding of the human physiological response to short-term and long-term space travel. The activity was primarily devoted to analyzing the biomedical results of Skylab (1973-74), a series of three space missions which is still ranked as the most comprehensive of all long-term biomedical space studies to date. This work was begun as a coordinated effort between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Johnson Space Center) and the General Electric Company’s Space Division (Houston, TX). It was the intent that this multidisciplined, integrative approach could reveal aspects of the then-new science of microgravity adaptation that were not obvious by adhering to the traditional methodology of examining each organ system in isolation. Some joint work with the Russians, including the Apollo-Soyez test project and a joint bedrest study was also supported during this period. In the 1980’s the systems analysis group’s effort was redirected to support the science management of human and animal experiments on the Space Shuttle. A few examples from this era are also included in the book. Parts of this work have been published elsewhere, presented at technical meetings, and documented in reports with limited distribution. These publications will be referenced throughout the text and the interested reader is advised to use these as resource material where additional details are desired. The intent of this book is not to reproduce these documents but rather to present a coherent view of the integrative analysis under one cover. This volume contains the first detailed publication (other than in internal reports) of an extensive metabolic balance analysis of Skylab data, the development and validation of the “Whole-Body Algorithm,” and simulation studies of diverse hypogravic environments. An analysis of cardiovascular deconditioning and a description of the calcium regulatory model are also new. A long period has passed between the completion of the main body of work represented in this book and its publication in this form. It was inevitable that new research efforts would lead to developments related to the spaceflight problems addressed and thereby make some of our biomedical conclusions obsolete. Although in some cases reference to more recent work have been included, for the most part this book should be considered an historical summary demonstrating the approach and utility of systems analysis and computer modeling in the NASA Life Sciences program at the time the studies were conducted.

Diffusion in Melts and Magmas

Diffusion results from random motion of particles and entities. Diffusion in melts and magmas is due to thermally excited random motion of atoms, ions, and clusters, and plays a critical role in magmatic and volcanic processes. In melts and magmas, diffusion is one of the two mechanisms of mass transfer; the other being bulk flow (referred to as convection or advection). When both are present, diffusion refers to the dispersive motion relative to the mean bulk flow in a given reference frame (Richter et al. 1998). Diffusion plays critical roles in controlling magma mixing (Watson 1982; Koyaguchi 1985, 1989; Lesher 1994; Huber et al. 2009; Guo and Zhang 2020), mineral growth and dissolution rates in magmas (e.g., Watson 1982; Harrison and Watson 1983; Zhang et al. 1989; Newcombe et al. 2014; Macris et al. 2018), bubble growth and dissolution rate in magmas (Sparks 1978; Proussevitch and Sahagian 1998; Liu and Zhang 2000; Zhang 2013), and elemental and isotope fractionation during mineral 2 growth and dissolution (Jambon 1980; Richter et al. 1999, 2003; Watson and Muller 2009; Chopra et al. 2012; Watkins et al. 2014, 2017; Holycross et al. 2016, 2018). As a result, diffusion also plays an essential role in explosive volcanic eruptions and magma crystallization. Furthermore, diffusion has important applications in geospeedometry (Lasaga 1983, 1998; Zhang 1994, 2008; Trail et al. 2016; Zhang and Xu 2016). Experimental investigation of diffusion in geologically relevant silicate melts began to flourish in the 1970’s when micro-analytical measurements of diffusion profiles became available. In addition to the vast number of papers published since then, numerous books and reviews are available for diffusion in silicate melts. Hofmann et al. (1974) edited a book titled “Geochemical Transport and Kinetics” published by Carnegie Institution of Washington. This was the first landmark book summarizing the field. Lasaga and Kirkpatrick (1981) edited a book “Kinetics of Geochemical Processes” as volume 8 of the Reviews in Mineralogy (later becoming Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry) series. Zhang and Cherniak (2010) edited “Diffusion in Minerals and Melts” as volume 72 of Reviews of Mineralogy and Geochemistry series, in which one chapter focused on diffusion theory, five chapters on diffusion in silicate melts (Behrens 2010; Lesher 2010; Liang 2010; Zhang and Ni 2010; Zhang et al. 2010), and other chapters were on experimental, analytical, and computational methods, and diffusion in minerals. Several textbooks covered the principles and applications of diffusion theories (Kirkaldy and Young 1987; Shewmon 1989; Cussler 1997; Lasaga 1998; Zhang 2008; Vrentas and Vrentas 2016), and two classic books covered the mathematics of diffusion (Carslaw and Jaeger 1959; Crank 1975). In preparing for this review chapter, we thought carefully about what to cover for this vast field, and decided to briefly go through the fundamentals of diffusion (more complete review can be found in Chakraborty 1995; Zhang 2008, 2010) and solutions to often-encountered 3 diffusion problems, and then focus on post-2010 diffusion studies on silicate melts and magmas. Here, melts refer to (mostly natural) silicate liquid, and magmas refer to crystal-bearing and/or bubble-bearing melts in which the continuous phase is the melt. There is a large body of work on diffusion in glasses, especially in the materials science literature, which is not covered in this review.

Principles of Neutron Scattering from Condensed Matter. By Andrew T. Boothroyd. Oxford University Press, 2020. Pp. 512. Price GBP 55.00. ISBN 9780198862314.

Neutron scattering user facilities are increasingly used by ‘non-expert’ users, opening neutron scattering to new science fields and greatly increasing the scientific impact of these facilities. This book aims to bring the needed introduction to the expanding area of neutron scattering techniques to this wider audience of scientists using neutron scattering as part of their experimental portfolio. In my opinion, it completely succeeds in that goal and provides the right balance of introduction and in-depth discussion. I also like the layout of the book, with some figures and notes in the margin making it easy to read and navigate. As a ‘long-time’ neutron scatterer, I am excited to add this book to my book shelf.

Insights Into On-Demand Transit: A Case Study of Houston METRO's curb2curb Service

As modern on-demand transit (ODT) deployments increase, the insights gained from studying real-world systems prove more useful. In this study, a shared ODT system called "METRO curb2curb" in the suburbs of Houston, Texas was studied, with a particular focus on the Missouri City zone, which has the highest ridership out of the four total zones. The Missouri City zone is 18 square miles with an average daily ridership of nearly 400 as of November 2024. In order to gain a passenger perspective, data collection was performed through using the ODT system first-hand, completing 50 rides in March and April of 2023. These rides included a mix of three different types of on-demand travel accommodations - 1.) advance bookings (30 min - 2 hours ahead), 2.) as-soon-as-possible / real-time dispatch bookings, and 3.) no-reservation trips at two designated "anchor points." Wait and travel time were collected for each ride. Anecdotal findings related to ease of locating the driver/vehicle, the process of booking a ride, and popular trip purposes were also documented. This study provides an overview of the METRO curb2curb system, including its history, service provider, service area, ridership, booking options, wait time, and travel time. Intricacies related to different definitions of wait time are included. Finally, relevant considerations for automating the on-demand transit system and discussed.

Aiming at Targets: The Autobiography of Robert C. Seamans, Jr.

Bob Seamans originally was inspired to write this book for his family and friends. That is a large audience. By his own count his immediate family numbers twenty-four, not counting brothers and cousins and their families. His friends are uncounted but surely run to hundreds. As one of them and as a colleague at NASA, I am pleased and honored that he asked me to write this foreword. While written in Bob's unique and informal style, this autobiography has significance for many readers beyond his large circles of family and friends. Leaders and students of large, complex technological endeavors should be able to learn much from reading how Bob faced the daunting technical and management challenges in his career. As the title of this book implies, Bob has always set high goals for himself and then kept his eyes focused on both the necessary details and the broader picture. His ability to shift smoothly among jobs that required seemingly disparate abilities and skills speaks volumes about his insight, dedication, and enthusiasm for achievement. The book spans a truly remarkable life story. Bob first takes us through his growing up, education, and early professional and family life. Next he focuses on the crucial years when he was the general manager of NASA. Then he moves on to his career in the top jobs at the Air Force, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Energy Research and Development Administration. Finally, he touches on his later leadership activities in the academic and business worlds. Aiming at Targets is a series of fascinating topical vignettes covering his professional life. Taken together, like broad brushstrokes in an impressionist painting, they give a better picture of Bob Seamans and his work than a detailed recitation of facts and dates could hope to do. This is a cheerful account of an interesting and successful career. The book is full of good stories, with many memorable characters. Like the proverbial sundial, it counts the sunny hours. It is a good read. But it has its serious side. Bob's career wasn't all fun. The Apollo 204 fire, which killed three astronauts, was a terrible climax to his time at NASA. As one who lived through those days with him, I can recall the trauma and special sense of responsibility he felt. His account of this period and of the sad deterioration of his relationship with his boss, Jim Webb, is both fair and generous. Those were not happy times, but they should not be allowed to overshadow the fact that in his seven years at NASA, Bob Seamans led the agency to its first successes and laid the groundwork for the great successes that came later.

Dressing for Altitude: U.S. Aviation Pressure Suits--Wiley Post to Space Shuttle

Since its earliest days, flight has been about pushing the limits of technology and, in many cases, pushing the limits of human endurance. The human body can be the limiting factor in the design of aircraft and spacecraft. Humans cannot survive unaided at high altitudes. There have been a number of books written on the subject of spacesuits, but the literature on the high-altitude pressure suits is lacking. This volume provides a high-level summary of the technological development and operational use of partial- and full-pressure suits, from the earliest models to the current high altitude, full-pressure suits used for modern aviation, as well as those that were used for launch and entry on the Space Shuttle. The goal of this work is to provide a resource on the technology for suits designed to keep humans alive at the edge of space. Hopefully, future generations will learn from the hard-fought lessons of the past. NASA is committed to the future of aerospace, and a key component of that future is the workforce. Without these men and women, technological advancements would not be possible. Dressing for Altitude is designed to provide the history of the technology and to explore the lessons learned through years of research in creating, testing, and utilizing today s high-altitude suits. It is our hope that this information will prove helpful in the development of future suits. Even with the closeout of the Space Shuttle and the planned ending of the U-2 program, pressure suits will be needed for protection as long as humans seek to explore high frontiers. The NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate is committed to the training of the current and future aerospace workforce. This book and the other books published by the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate are in support of this commitment. Hopefully, you will find this book a valuable resource for many years to come.

Numerical Prediction of Dust

Covers the whole breadth of mineral dust research, from a scientific perspective Presents interdisciplinary work including results from field campaigns, satellite observations, laboratory studies, computer modelling and theoretical studies Explores the role of dust as a player and recorder of environmental change This volume presents state-of-the-art research about mineral dust, including results from field campaigns, satellite observations, laboratory studies, computer modelling and theoretical studies. Dust research is a new, dynamic and fast-growing area of science and due to its multiple roles in the Earth system, dust has become a fascinating topic for many scientific disciplines. Aspects of dust research covered in this book reach from timescales of minutes (as with dust devils, cloud processes, and radiation) to millennia (as with loess formation and oceanic sediments), making dust both a player and recorder of environmental change. The book is structured in four main parts that explore characteristics of dust, the global dust cycle, impacts of dust on the Earth system, and dust as a climate indicator. The chapters in these parts provide a comprehensive, detailed overview of this highly interdisciplinary subject. The contributions presented here cover dust from source to sink and describe all the processes dust particles undergo while travelling through the atmosphere. Chapters explore how dust is lifted and transported, how it affects radiation, clouds, regional circulations, precipitation and chemical processes in the atmosphere, and how it deteriorates air quality. The book explores how dust is removed from the atmosphere by gravitational settling, turbulence or precipitation, how iron contained in dust fertilizes terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and about the role that dust plays in human health. We learn how dust is observed, simulated using computer models and forecast. The book also details the role of dust deposits for climate reconstructions. Scientific observations and results are presented, along with numerous illustrations. This work has an interdisciplinary appeal and will engage scholars in geology, geography, chemistry, meteorology and physics, amongst others with an interest in the Earth system and environmental change.
