Microchannel intensified electrography

Although electrography is an attractive electronic imaging technique, it suffers at low light levels from limitations imposed by microphotometer and emulsion grain noise. The use of microchannel intensification allows individual photoelectron events to be unambiguously detected and measured, with little loss of achievable resolution. A series of quantitative studies have been conducted to determine the gains in detectivity and SNR yielded by the use of this technique, through microphotometry and computer analysis of images identical or similar to laboratory light sources, by means of both unintensified and microchannel-intensified electromagnetic Schmidt cameras. Applications of the technique to far-UV wide field imaging and nebular spectrograph experiments are described.

Fabrication of highly dense SiN4 ceramics without additives by high pressure sintering

Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is one of candidate materials for the engineering ceramics which is used at high temperatures. The mechanical strengths of hot pressed or sintered Si2N4 ceramics containing some amount of additives, however, are deteriorated at elevated temperatures. To improve the high temperature strength of Si3N4 ceramics, an attempt to consolidate Si3N4 without additives was made by high pressure sintering technique. Scanning electron micrographs of fracture surfaces of the sintered bodies showed the bodies had finely grained and fully self-bonded sintered bodies were 310N sq m at room temperature and 174N/sq m at 1200 C.

Fracture modes in notched angleplied composite laminates

The Composite Durability Structural Analysis (CODSTRAN) computer code is used to determine composite fracture. Fracture modes in solid and notched, unidirectional and angleplied graphite/epoxy composites were determined by using CODSTRAN. Experimental verification included both nondestructive (ultrasonic C-Scanning) and destructive (scanning electron microscopy) techniques. The fracture modes were found to be a function of ply orientations and whether the composite is notched or unnotched. Delaminations caused by stress concentrations around notch tips were also determined. Results indicate that the composite mechanics, structural analysis, laminate analysis, and fracture criteria modules embedded in CODSTRAN are valid for determining composite fracture modes.

Complex time dependent wave packet technique for thermal equilibrium systems - Electronic spectra

A time dependent wave packet method is presented for the rapid calculation of the properties of systems in thermal equilibrium and is applied, as an illustration, to electronic spectra. The thawed Gaussian approximation to quantum wave packet dynamics combined with evaluation of the density matrix operator by imaginary time propagation is shown to give exact electronic spectra for harmonic potentials and excellent results for both a Morse potential and for the band contours of the three transitions of the visible electronic absorption spectrum of the iodine molecule. The method, in principle, can be extended to many atoms (e.g., condensed phases) and to other properties (e.g., infrared and Raman spectra and thermodynamic variables).

Chondrule rims and interchondrule matrix in UOC

Opaque rims around chondrules and clasts were distinguished from opaque, interchondrule matrix apparently unrelated spatially to chondrules and clasts. Microprobe and electron microscope techniques were used. The mean chemical composition for dark rim and matrix in Bishunpur and Tieschitz are similar to the opaque matrix of Huss, et al. However, the mean dark rim compositions in Bishunpur have significantly higher Fe, and lower Na, K, Al and Si than opaque interchondrule matrix. The opaque matrix of Huss, et al, essentially lies between these compositions. In Tieschitz only rim material was observed. In Tieschitz the rims are Si-poor and dominated by normative olivine (Fo50). Again there is an Na, K, Al component but is often nepheline normative rather than albitic. It too is probably present as glass, Ashworth (pers.comm.). In Bishunpur rims as well as the silicate-FeS, FeNi layering described by Allen, et al, discontinuous layering was observed within the silicate portion. This is apparently due to variations in the proportions of the components, particularly in the glassy phase. In Bishunpur there is a strong genetic link between matrix and rims, although rims seem to have formed under different, possibly more oxidizing, conditions. Also the presence of the same component in rims, matrix chondrules, and clasts suggests a common source.

Electronic heterodyne readout of fringes in moire deflectometry

An electronic heterodyne technique is described for the readout of fringes in moire deflectometry. The technique is based on phase measurements of signals generated by a photodetector observing the light transmitted through a traveling moire fringe pattern. The phase of the signal is proportional to the fringe deviation and thus to the deflection angle of the light ray. The phase is measured on line by a standard phase meter with an accuracy of 1 deg or 1:360 of a fringe. The technique, which is precise and sensitive, is demonstrated by detecting and measuring a fringe shift of 0.15 mm corresponding to 0.029 of a fringe.

Moire deflectometry with deferred electronic heterodyne readout

The electronic heterodyne technique is applied to the task of deferred readout of phase objects' moire fringes. In combination with the heterodyne readout technique, moire deflectometry constitutes a powerful tool for the study of phase objects, exhibiting high sensitivity, ease of automation and recording, low cost, use of incoherent illumination, and independence from fringe contrast variations.

A V-grooved AlGaAs/GaAs passivated PN junction

A passivated, V-grooved GaAs solar cell offers important advantages in terms of improved optical coupling, higher short circuit current, and increased tolerance to particle radiation when compared to the planar cell configuration. An AlGaAs epilayer has been deposited on a p-type GaAs epilayer grown on an n-type V-grooved GaAs surface using MOCVD. A wet chemical etching process was used to produce a V-pattern with a 7.0 micron periodicity. Reflectivity measurements substantiate the expected decrease in solar reflectance. Scanning electron microscopy techniques were used to confirm the presence of the AlGaAs layer and verify the existence of a pn junction.

Performance of moire deflectometry with deferred electronic heterodyne readout

The effects of diffraction and nonlinear photographic emulsion characteristics on the performance of deferred electronic heterodyne moire deflectometry are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The intensity transmission distribution of the transparency, the moire image, the heterodyne readout, and the spatial and angular resolution are analytically discussed. The deferred electronic heterodyne technique is evaluated by measuring small fringe shifts caused by a weak phase object. It is found that this technique can be applied for accurate and sensitive readout of moire fringes of unsteady phase objects. The theoretical study shows that the accuracy and sensitivity of the system are weakly affected by diffraction and nonlinear photographic emulsion characteristics. Nonlinear recording does not affect the spatial resolution of the system.

Zelda and company - Petrogenesis of sulfide-rich Fremdlinge and constraints on solar nebula processes

A detailed petrographic and chemical study of Zelda (a gigantic sulfide-rich Fremdling from the Allende Ca-rich inclusion, CAI, Egg 6) and its contact with the host was conducted using analytical SEM and electron-microprobe techniques, and the results were compared with those obtained on other sulfide-rich and oxide-rich Fremdlinge. Strong evidence is presented that Zelda, a type-example of sulfide-rich Fremdlinge, has been formed from a preexisting Ur-Fremdling, similar by composition to Willy, by closed-system sulfidization of magnetite and metal. At least two different sulfidization mechanisms appear to have occurred in altering Fremdlinge: one producing compositionally homogeneous equigranular objects such as Zelda, the other producing compositionally and texturally heterogeneous objects.

Observation of interface band structure by ballistic-electron-emission microscopy

The paper reports an advanced ballistic electron spectroscopy technique that was used to directly measure semiconductor band structure properties at a subsurface interface. Two interface systems having contrasting band structures were investigated by this method: Au-Si and Au-GaAs. It is concluded that the proposed method, based on scanning tunneling microscopy, enables the spatially resolved carrier-transport spectroscopy of interfaces.

Basalts and gabbros from Mare Crisium - Evidence for extreme fractional crystallization

Petrographic and electron microprobe techniques were used to examine igneous fragments in Luna 24 samples 24088 and 24105. It is the complex chemistry of the pyroxenes that distinguishes the different rock types. Basaltic pyroxenes exhibit an Fe-enrichment trend; the evolutionary trends are more complex in the gabbros, with enrichments in both Fe and Ti and a depletion in Cr. These chemical evolutionary trends are displayed by a progressive variation in rock types from Mg-rich olivine-gabbro to olivine-gabbro, and to ferrogabbro and ferrotroctolite. The low TiO2 content of the primary melt, possibly represented by the least-evolved Mg-rich olivine-gabbro, retarded the formation of early ilmenite and spinel, such that 'Fenner Trend' Fe enrichment occurred. The ferrotroctolite is probably the end product of chemical evolution by extreme fractional crystallization, controlled primarily by olivine and pyroxene crystallization.

Processing and microstructure of melt spun NiAl alloys

The influence of various melt spinning parameters and the effect of consolidation on the microstructure of melt spun NiAl and NiAl + W alloys have been examined by optical and electron microscopy techniques. It was found that the addition of 0.5 at. pct W to NiAl results in a fine dispersion of W particles after melt spinning which effectively controls grain growth during annealing treatments or consolidation at temperatures between 1523 and 1723 K. Increased wheel speeds are effective at reducing both the ribbon thickness and grain size, such that proper choice of both composition and casting parameters can produce structures with grain sizes as small as 2 microns. Finally, fabrication of continuous fiber-reinforced composites which used pulverized ribbon as the matrix material was demonstrated.

Strategic planning for the International Space Station

The concept for utilization and operations planning for the International Space Station Freedom was developed in a NASA Space Station Operations Task Force in 1986. Since that time the concept has been further refined to definitize the process and products required to integrate the needs of the international user community with the operational capabilities of the Station in its evolving configuration. The keystone to the process is the development of individual plans by the partners, with the parameters and formats common to the degree that electronic communications techniques can be effectively utilized, while maintaining the proper level and location of configuration control. The integration, evaluation, and verification of the integrated plan, called the Consolidated Operations and Utilization Plan (COUP), is being tested in a multilateral environment to prove out the parameters, interfaces, and process details necessary to produce the first COUP for Space Station in 1991. This paper will describe the concept, process, and the status of the multilateral test case.

Oxidation characteristics of Beta-21S in air in the temperature range 600 to 800 C

The metastable beta-Ti alloy Beta-21S, Ti-15Mo-2.7Nb-3Al-0.2Si (weight percent), has been proposed as a candidate for use in metal matrix composites in future hypersonic vehicles. The present study investigated the oxidation behavior of Beta-21S over the temperature range 600 C to 800 C. Oxidation weight gain was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. Oxidized specimens were evaluated using x ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x ray analysis, and electron microprobe analysis to identify oxidation products and evaluate oxidation damage to the alloy.
