A study of selected radiation and propagation problems related to antennas and probes in magneto-ionic media

Research consisted of computations toward the solution of the problem of the current distribution on a cylindrical antenna in a magnetoplasma. The case of an antenna parallel to the applied magnetic field was investigated. A systematic method of asymptotic expansion was found which simplifies the solution in the general case by giving the field of a dipole even at relatively short range. Some useful properties of the dispersion surfaces in a lossy medium have also been found. A laboratory experiment was directed toward evaluating nonlinear effects, such as those due to power level, bias voltage and electron heating. The problem of reflection and transmission of waves in an electron heated plasma was treated theoretically. The profile inversion problem has been pursued. Some results are very encouraging, however, the general question of stability of the solution remains unsolved.

Alkali oxide-tantalum oxide and alkali oxide-niobium oxide ionic conductors

A search was made for new cationic conducting phases in alkali-tantalate and niobate systems. The phase equilibrium diagrams were constructed for the six binary systems Nb2O5-LiNbO3, Nb2O5-NaNbO3, Nb2O5-KNbO3, Ta2O5-NaTaO3, Ta2O5-LiTaO3, and Ta2O5-KTaO3. Various other binary and ternary systems were also examined. Pellets of nineteen phases were evaluated (by the sponsoring agency) by dielectric loss measurements. Attempts were made to grow large crystals of eight different phases. The system Ta2O5-KTaO3 contains at least three phases which showed peaks in dielectric loss vs. temperature. All three contain structures related to the tungsten bronzes with alkali ions in non-stoichiometric crystallographic positions.

The nuclear and ionic charge distribution particle experiments on the ISEE-1 and ISEE-C spacecraft

The ISEE-1 and ISEE-C instruments are designed to measure the elemental abundances, charge state composition, energy spectra, and angular distributions of energetic ions in the energy range 2 keV/charge to 80 MeV/nucleon and electrons between 75 and 1300 keV. The instrument consists of three sensor systems: (1) ULECA which is an electrostatic deflection system with rectangular solid-state detectors for the 3-560 keV/charge range; (2) ULEWATT which is a double dE/dX vs E thin-window flowthrough proportional counter/solid-state detector telescope for the 0.2-80 MeV/nucleon (Fe) range; and (3) ULEZEQ which is a combination of an electrostatic deflection analyzer and a thin-window dE/dX vs E system with thin-window proportional counter and position-sensitive solid-state detector. The applications of the instruments to solar and interplanetary phenomena and to magnetospheric acceleration and trapped particles are discussed.

Spectroscopy of the extreme ultraviolet dayglow at 6.5A resolution - Atomic and ionic emissions between 530 and 1240A

EUV spectra (530-1500A) of the day airglow in up, down and horizontal aspect orientations have been obtained with 6.5A resolution and a limiting sensitivity of 5R from a rocket experiment. Below 834A the spectrum is rich in previously unobserved OII transitions connecting with 4S(0), 2D(0), and 2P(0) states. Recent broad-band photometric observations of geocoronal HeI 584A emission in terms of the newly observed OII emissions are shown. The OI 989A and OI 1304A emissions exhibit similar dependence on altitude and viewing geometry with the OI 989A brightness 1/15 that of OI 1340. Emission at 1026A is identified as geocoronal HI Lyman beta rather than OI multiplet emission and observed intensities agree well with model estimates. An unexpectedly high NI 1200/NI 1134A brightness ratio is evidence of a significant contribution from photodissociative excitation of N2 to the NI 1200A source function.

The solubility of olivine in basaltic liquids - An ionic model

A model is presented which enables the temperature at which olivine is in equilibrium with any alkali-depleted basaltic compound to be calculated to within + or - 30 C. It is noted that the error increases substantially when applied to terrestrial basalts which contain several weight percent alkalis. In addition the model predicts and quantifies the reduced activity of SiO4(4-) monomers due to increasing SiO2 concentrations in the melt. It is shown that the coordination of alumina in melts which precipitate olivine only appears to be dominantly octahedral, while titanium acts as a polmerizing agent by interconnecting previously isolated SiO4(4-) monomers. It is concluded that the model is sufficiently sensitive to show that there are small repulsive forces between Mg(2+) and calcium ions which are in association with normative diopside in the melt.

In situ identification of various ionic species in Jupiter's magnetosphere

Continuing analysis of the Voyager 1 in situ measurements of the plasma (10-5,950 V) near Jupiter has revealed the existence of further atomic and molecular ions as minor constituents of the plasma. Ions with mass per charge values of 1, 8, 10-2/3, 16, 23, 32, 64, about 104, and about 160 were identified within 20 Jovian radii of Jupiter in the dayside magnetosphere. Wherever both protons and heavy ions were detected, the mass density was dominated by the heavy ions by a factor of about 100. The plasma ions moved with a common component of velocity which is not always the value expected geometrically from co-rotation. The ions with mass per charge values equal to or larger than 64 were probably molecular ions.

Characterization and growth of epitaxial layers of Gs exhibiting high resistivity for ionic implantation

Either classical or low temperature epitaxial growth techniques can be used to control the deposition of buffer layers of GaAs on semiconducting substrates and to obtain the resistivity and purity desired. Techniques developed to study, as a function of thickness, the evolution of mobilities by photoHall, and the spectroscopy of shallow and deep centers by cathodoluminescence and current transients reveal one very pure layer of medium resistivity and high mobility, and another "dead layer" of elevated resistivity far from the surface. The highly resistive layer remains pure over several microns, which appears interesting for implantation.

Model calculations of the dayside ionosphere of Venus - Ionic composition

Comprehensive model calculations of the dayside ion density distributions were carried out and compared with results from the Pioneer Venus ion mass spectrometer. The coupled continuity and momentum equations were solved for O2(+), O(+), CO2(+), C(+), N(+), He(+), and H(+) densities for altitudes well away from the ionopause, where the horizontal transport terms are negligible. Chemical equilibrium solutions, describing conditions below about 200 km, were also obtained for N2(+), NO(+), and CO(+). The agreement between the model calculations of ion density and the measurements is good for some species, such as O(+), and rather poor for others, such as CO(+), indicating that while a basic understanding of the major chemical and physical processes controlling the composition and vertical distribution of the dayside Venus ionosphere, well below the ionopause, has been achieved, there are many important details requiring further investigations.

About the parametric interplay between ionic Mach number, body-size, and satellite potential in determining the ion depletion in the wake of the S3-2 satellite

The variation of ion current depletion in the wake of the U.S. Air Force satellite S3-2 is quantitatively determined, taking into account altitudes in the range from 300 to 1100 km. The considered investigation has the objective to present results which besides of being of scientific interest per se are useful to the planning of future experiments of body-plasma electrodynamic interactions in a supersonic and sub-Alfvenic flow regime to be conducted on board the Shuttle/Spacelab. More specifically, it is expected that the outcome of investigations of the kind presented will be useful in the planning of instrument location on ejectable ensembles of probes and on the Orbiter itself in future Shuttle/Spacelab missions.

Termolecular ionic recombination at high ambient gas density

It is shown that the importance of diffusion relative to drift in ion-ion recombination is a decreasing function of the separation between the ions (contrary to a common supposition). Langevin's formula for the recombination coefficient is obtained very simply using a physical model which allows for both diffusion and drift.

Direct determination of the ionic charge distribution of heavy ions in Fe-rich solar energetic particle events

The first direct determination of the iron charge distribution in the energy range 0.3-1.0 MeV/nucleon during Fe-rich and He-3-rich solar energetic particle events is reported. The deterimination was made on the basis of ISEE-3 data for the event from August 1978 to October 1979. The enrichment of He-3 iron relative to oxygen was found to be directly correlated with the enrichment of He-3 to He-4. Average ion charge distributions were computed for: (1) He-3-rich periods which were also Fe-rich and had a He-3/He-4 ratio of 0.1 and (2) periods with a He-3/He-4 ratio of less than 0.1. It is found that the mean iron charge state for He-3-rich periods was in the range 19.5 (+ or - 1.5) and only 14 (+ or - 1) for the time periods with He-3/He-4 less than ratio of 0.1. The reduced data are found to be in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of Fisk (1978), suggesting a temperature in the source region above 5 million degrees K for Fe-rich and He-3-rich solar energetic particle events.
