Block encoders for Reed-Muller codes

Encoding algorithms generate a 32 x 64-bit matrix Reed-Muller code from a 6-bit orthogonal code-word. This increases error-free reception by a high rate telemetry channel under adverse signal noise with minimal use of additional hardware.

Acousto-optic filter for electronic laser tuning

Electronically tunable lithium niobate filter utilizes acoustic-optic diffraction for tuning laser to desired frequencies. Filter placed inside laser cavity diffracts incident optical signal of one polarization into orthogonal polarization by collinearly propagating acoustic beam to desired wavelength.

The attitude determination of a three axes stabilized spacecraft

An approach is presented for attitude determination of a three axis stabilized spacecraft. The employment of two independent vectors is described whose components with respect to two reference coordinate axes can be known. Such two coordinate axes are right-handed three mutually orthogonal axes systems of which one is fixed in the spacecraft and the other has known orientation in space. The relationship between the two systems are then expressed as mathematical equations with the use of the two reference vectors. By computing the derived equations, the attitude of the spacecraft can be obtained.

High frequency electromagnetic response of the moon

It is shown that the contribution of higher harmonics to the lunar transfer functions for the tangential components of the surface magnetic field is significant at frequencies greater than 0.01 Hz. The inclusion of the higher harmonics shows that there are two distinct transfer functions corresponding to the components of the tangential surface magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the direction of the wave vector of the external disturbance forcing the lunar induction. The dependences of these transfer functions on frequency and location are determined. The effects of the higher harmonics can: (1) account for a hitherto unexplained feature in the Apollo 12-Explorer 35 transfer functions, namely the rolloff at high frequencies; and (2) offer a possible explanation for the frequency dependence of the difference between the transfer functions for the two orthogonal components of the surface magnetic field. The harmonic response of a simple current layer model of the moon is derived.

Some experimental observations on circulating currents in a crossed field plasma accelerator

Experiments on a thermally ionized argon plasma suggest that applying a Lorentz force by means of orthogonal electric and magnetic fields to an electrically conducting fluid flow imposes necessary but not sufficient conditions for acceleration. There are, in fact, many combinations of current and magnetic field which cause decelerations of the fluid. The deceleration arises from a retarding force which may be larger than the applied Lorentz force. The retarding force causing the deceleration is a consequence of currents circulating completely within the fluid. These currents arise from differences in velocity between the central and wall regions of the duct which interact with the imposed magnetic field to produce differences in induced voltages. The observed physical effects of the circulating currents cause a loss in velocity in the central region of the duct, an increase in thermal energy in the sidewall region, and little change in thermal energy near the electrode wall region. For similar velocity profiles, the adverse effects appear to be related to the product of electrical conductivity and velocity, and performance as an accelerator appears to be controlled by the Hoffman loading parameter (i.e., the ratio of the applied to the induced currents).

Charged particle motion in the vicinity of a neutral plane

The motion of a charged particle in a 2-dimensional neutral sheet with linear magnetic field variation is analyzed by Hamiltonian methods. From the basic Hamiltonian formulation, results of Sonnerup are recovered and given intuitive interpretation. The transformed Hamiltonian is used to derive the correct frequency of oscillation and serves as the basis of analytical treatment of perturbed versions of the motion, e.g. with electric field added. For 2-dimensional fields with slightly differing configurations - in particular, with added small field component orthogonal to the sheet, with an X-type null or with a chain of null points - two alternative methods are developed, reducing the problem either to motion in a 2-dimensional potential or to a pair of coupled oscillators.
