Observations of the Hydrogen Cyanide in Comet 46P/Wirtanen at a 3.4 mm Wavelength

We searched for rotational lines of H{sup 12}C{sup 14}N in comet 46P/Wirtanen, using the Purple Mountain Observatory 13.7 m radio telescope. The J = 1–0 lines of HCN (3.4 mm wavelength) were unambiguously detected in 46P during the 2018 December 14–15 period, with a beam resolution of 62.″2 and a velocity resolution of ∼0.21 km s{sup −1} per channel. The molecular production rates were computed. The mean HCN(1–0) production rate of 46P was (6.45 ± 1.31) × 10{sup 24} molec s{sup −1} in the above two days. We found possible indications of time variation in the outgassing activity. The average HCN abundance relative to water Q {sub [HCN]}/Q{sub [H{sub 2O]}} of 46P was (0.09 ± 0.01)%. The HCN line shapes gave primary information on the kinematics of the cometary atmosphere. The HCN linewidths provided a direct determination of the coma expansion velocity, which was about 0.5 ± 0.05 km s{sup −1} at post-perihelion (1.056 au).

Characterization of the Nucleus, Morphology, and Activity of Interstellar Comet 2I/Borisov by Optical and Near-infrared GROWTH, Apache Point, IRTF, ZTF, and Keck Observations

We present visible and near-infrared (NIR) photometric and spectroscopic observations of interstellar object (ISO) 2I/Borisov taken from 2019 September 10 to 2019 December 20 using the GROWTH, the Apache Point Observatory Astrophysical Research Consortium 3.5 m, and the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility 3.0 m combined with pre- and postdiscovery observations of 2I obtained by the Zwicky Transient Facility from 2019 March 17 to 2019 May 5. Comparison with imaging of distant solar system comets shows an object very similar to mildly active solar system comets with an outgassing rate of ∼10{sup 27} mol s{sup −1}. The photometry, taken in filters spanning the visible and NIR range, shows a gradual brightening trend of ∼0.03 mag day{sup −1} since 2019 September 10 UTC for a reddish object becoming neutral in the NIR. The light curve from recent and prediscovery data reveals a brightness trend suggesting the recent onset of significant H{sub 2}O sublimation with the comet being active with super volatiles such as CO at heliocentric distances >6 au consistent with its extended morphology. Using the advanced capability to significantly reduce the scattered light from the coma enabled by high-resolution NIR images from Keck adaptive optics taken on 2019 October 4, we estimate a diameter for 2I’s nucleus of ≲1.4 km. We use the size estimates of 1I/’Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov to roughly estimate the slope of the ISO size distribution, resulting in a slope of ∼3.4 ± 1.2, similar to solar system comets and bodies produced from collisional equilibrium.

James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Spectral and Continuum Imaging of Hyperactive Comet 46P/Wirtanen

The Jupiter-family comet (JFC) 46P/Wirtanen passed the Earth at a distance of 0.077 au on 2018 December 16 UT, presenting a rare opportunity to study the chemical structure of its coma. With the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope we achieved a resolution of 800 km, which is smaller than the scale lengths of some distributed cometary molecules at the comet’s heliocentric distance of 1 au. Spectroscopic observations of the J = 4 - 3 transition of HCN showed generally uniform levels of outgassing activity during the observing period, 2018 December 14–20. Gas expansion velocities were ~0.6 km s{sup -1}, and the derived average HCN production rate was 7.4 × 10{sup 24} mol s{sup -1}. HCN and CH{sub 3}OH emissions were detected at least 30" (1600 km) from the nucleus, and the abundances of these species were typical for a JFC. The radial distribution of CH{sub 3}OH is consistent with an extended source of sublimation such as a population of icy grains—cometary halo ice primaries, or CHIPs—as has been invoked previously to explain hyperactivity in comets. The abundance of H{sub 2}CO is normal if it is a daughter species. HNC and CO were not detected, but a sensitive nondetection of CS implies an unusually low CS:H{sub 2}O ratio of <0.02%. The peak brightness of the 850 μm continuum emissions from icy coma dust particles of size ~1 mm fell from (52 ± 6) to (40 ± 3) mJy beam{sup -1} through the week, while the size of the dust coma remained essentially constant, with dust extending to ~1000 km from the nucleus. The total mass of those particles was ~2 × 10{sup 8} kg.

Detection of an Atmosphere on a Rocky Exoplanet

We report the detection of an atmosphere on a rocky exoplanet, GJ 1132 b, which is similar to Earth in terms of size and density. The atmospheric transmission spectrum was detected using Hubble WFC3 measurements and shows spectral signatures of aerosol scattering, HCN, and CH{sub 4} in a low mean molecular weight atmosphere. We model the atmospheric loss process and conclude that GJ 1132 b likely lost the original H/He envelope, suggesting that the atmosphere that we detect has been reestablished. We explore the possibility of H{sub 2} mantle degassing, previously identified as a possibility for this planet by theoretical studies, and find that outgassing from ultra-reduced magma could produce the observed atmosphere. In this way we use the observed exoplanet transmission spectrum to gain insights into magma composition for a terrestrial planet. The detection of an atmosphere on this rocky planet raises the possibility that the numerous powerfully irradiated super-Earth planets, believed to be the evaporated cores of sub-Neptunes, may, under favorable circumstances, host detectable atmospheres.

Combining Particle Tracking with Electromagnetic Radiation Showers: Merging GPT and Geant4 with Visualization

Field emitted electrons can seriously affect the operation of high-field, high-duty factor electron accelerators. Accelerated field emission can result in high average power beams which can radiation damage beamline components. In addition, localized losses generate thermal hot spots whose outgassing degrades the ultra-high vacuum required in photoinjectors and cryomodules. However, despite their importance, the effects of field emission are rarely included in the design and engineering of electron injectors. This work attempts to remedy this situation by combining two well-known and well-documented programs, GPT and Geant4, to track electrons and their losses in an injector beamline. This paper describes a system of programs which simulates electron paths and losses along the beamline. In addition, the tracking results can be zoomed and panned along and about the beampipe envelope using an open-source 3D CAD program. The scattering albedo calculations of the combined program, GPT-Geant4, are shown to be in good agreement with the literature albedos. The paper concludes with a dark current simulation for the LCLS-II injector from the cathode to the collimator at 1.5 m from the cathode.

Moderate spectral resolution solar irradiance measurements, aerosol optical depth, and solar transmission, from 360 to 1070 nm, using the refurbished rotating shadow band spectroradiometer (RSS)

Abstract. This paper reports on a third-generation rotating shadow band spectroradiometer (RSS) used to measure global and diffuse horizontal plus direct normal irradiances and transmissions at 1002 wavelengths between 360 and 1070 nm. The prism-dispersed spectral data are from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plains site in north-central Oklahoma (36.605∘ N, 97.486∘ W) and cover dates between August 2009 and February 2014. The refurbished RSS isolates the detector in a vacuum chamber with pressures near 10−7 torr. This prevents the deposition of outgassed vapors from the interior of the spectrometer shell on the cooled detector that affected the operation of the first commercial RSS. Methods for (1) ensuring the correct wavelength registration of the data and (2) deriving extraterrestrial responses over the entire spectrum, including throughout strong water vapor and oxygen bands, are described. The resulting data produced are archived as ARM data records and include cloud-screened aerosol optical depths, spectral irradiances and direct normal solar transmission, as well as normalized diffuse and global irradiances.

THERMAL DECOMPOSITION OF HYDRAZINE

The Thermal Stability of Hydrazine has been studied in the temperature and pressure intervals of 175" to 250"C. and 300 to 430 p.s.i., Respectively. Previous studies of the decomposition of hydrazine indicated that several factors affect its stability (2, 5, 7). the rate of decomposition is increased by the presence of certain surfaces (especially metals and salts). pH, oxygen, and carbon dioxide. Further explosive decomposition Is attributable to the uncontrolled heterogeneous, gas-phase decomposition. These factors were considered in selecting the following experimental conditions: highly purified hydrazine was prepared in a nitrogen atmosphere, and this product was decomposed over triply distilled mercury in outgassed borosilicate glass tubes at ullages that were initially zero. This study also included the effects of added quantities of ammonia on the rate of decomposition and an investigation of the products of the decomposition.

Feasibility of liquid-metal vacuum seals

A basic component of any ultrahigh-vacuum system is a seal capable of isolating a test chamber from its higher pressure surroundings. Two of the most common vacuum seals now in use are the elastomer O-ring seal and the metallic shear seal. The former has the problem of outgassing and gas permeation; the latter requires a large force per unit seal-length to maintain the sealing action. The search for a seal which would provide minimal virtual and real leak rates in a chamber, without requiring a large force to consummate the seal, led to investigation of a liquid-metal seal.

Mechanism facilitates coating of inner surfaces of metal cylinders

Cylinder is rotated about shielded hot filament to vapor deposit thin coatings of aluminum or other metallic substances on the inner surface of a cylinder while avoiding heat-producing high-density current flow which causes outgassing of the coating surface. This method is acceptable for glass or metal.
