Model-based Co-Simulation of Heat Pump Water Heater with Phase Change Materials Thermal Energy Storage

The study analysis the behavior of a new developed heat pump water heater technology which integrates a phase change materials storage with a standard heat pump water heater to maximize the performance parameters of the Unified Energy Factor (UEF) and First Hour Rating (FHR). A model-based control development co-simulation platform is developed to include equipment models, such as heat pump, standard water tank, phase change materials storage tank, and integrate them with control model to support controls design, analysis, verification, and validation. Simulation results are compared with lab test results to validate the accuracy of developed co-simulation platform

Stable salt hydrate-based thermal energy storage materials

A phase change material composition for latent heat storage is provided. In one embodiment, the phase change material includes a salt hydrate having a melting temperature (Tm) of from 1° C. to 100° C. as determined in accordance with ASTM E793. The phase change material further includes a stabilizing matrix including a polysaccharide selected from the group of a nanocellulose, a sulfonated polysaccharide, a starch, a glycogen, a chitin, and combinations thereof. A composite article including the phase change material composition is also provided.

Salt hydrate-based phase change thermal energy storage and encapsulation thereof

Among other things, the present disclosure relates to phase change material (PCM) composites composed of an PCM mixed with a nucleating agent contained within the pores of a graphite matrix and/or a hydrogel. The process to create these PCM composites includes coating the surface of graphite with a surfactant, compressing the graphite to form a matrix, then filling the graphite matrix with the PCM.

Hollow lattice thermal energy storage heat exchanger

Example heat exchangers and methods of use are described herein. An example heat exchanger includes a lattice structure including a plurality of conduits defining a plurality of interstitial voids between the plurality of conduits. Each of the plurality of conduits includes an inlet and an outlet, and the plurality of conduits are arranged such that, between the inlet and the outlet, each of the conduits intersects at least one other conduit to enable flow between the intersecting conduits. The example heat exchanger also includes a first manifold formed unitarily with the lattice structure, the first manifold comprising a first plurality of openings in fluid communication with each inlet of the plurality of conduits. The example heat exchanger further includes a phase change material (PCM) disposed within and substantially filling the plurality of interstitial voids.

Testing and Modeling of Subscale Ice-on-Coil Module as Low Temperature Reservoir for sCO2 based Pumped Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Echogen tested approximately 10 kWthsubscale IOC system in their lab in Akron, OH for studying the feasibility, endurance and performance impact of the technology on PTES system. This paper discusses the test loop setup, testing and results from this sub-scale IOC testing. Along with testing, the project team also developed sub-scale IOC transient model. The paper discusses this transient model development and its validation against the test data.
