Multicyclic control of a helicopter rotor considering the influence of vibration, loads, and control motion

Weighted multiple linear regression is used to establish a transfer function matrix relationship between higher harmonic control inputs and transducer vibration outputs for a controllable twist rotor. Data used in the regression were taken from the test of a KAMAN controllable twist rotor conducted in the Ames Research Center's 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel in June 1977. Optimal controls to minimize fixed system vibrational levels are calculated using linear quadratic regulatory theory with a control deflection penalty included in the performance criteria. Control sensitivity to changes in control travel, forward speed, and lift and propulsive forces is examined. It is found that the linear transfer matrix is a strong function of forward speed and a weak function of lift and propulsive force. An open-loop strategy is proposed for systems with limited control travel.

A Bridge Health Monitoring Method Using the Hilbert-Huang Transform: A Case Study

We have developed a new method for nondestructive instrument method to monitor the health of a bridge. This new method is based on a transient test load and simple data collection. The nuclear of the method is the new invented nonstationary and nonlinear time series analysis method, the Empirical Mode Decomposition and Hilbert Spectral Analysis. The final decision on the health of the bridge structure is based on the nonlinear characteristic of the data, and on the comparison between the free and the forced vibration frequencies. Thus this alternative method enjoys many advantages: (1) no a priori data required, (2) simple data collection, and (3) minimum traffic disruption. Results from a case study of the Shing-Nan Bridge in Hou-Wei will be reported.

Acoustical measurements of vibrational relaxation in moist N2 at elevated temperatures

Sound absorption measurements are conducted by the resonant tube technique to study vibrational relaxation in moist N2 at 301, 343, and 387 K. Analysis of the data shows that improved measurement accuracy at the higher temperatures establishes vibrational-vibrational energy transfer as the operative relaxation path for the de-excitation of N2 by H2O beyond the uncertainty of experimental error. The best-fitted temperature dependence of the vibrational-vibrational rate constant is given, noting that the expression is consistent with seven independent sets of both acoustical and nonacoustical data.

Gemini Program Mission Report for Gemini-Titan 1 (GT-1)

The Gemini-Titan 1 (GT-1) space vehicle was comprised of the Gemini spacecraft and the Gemini launch vehicle. The Gemini launch vehicle is a two-stage modified Titan II ICBM. The major modifications are the addition of a malfunction detection system and a secondary flight controls system. The Gemini spacecraft, designed to carry a crew of two men on earth orbital and rendezvous missions, was unmanned for the flight reported herein (GT-1). There were no complete Gemini flight systems on board; however, the C-band transponder and telemetry transmitters were Gemini flight subsystems. Dummy equipment, having a mass and moment of inertia equal to flight system equipment, was installed in the spacecraft. The Spacecraft was instrumented to obtain data on spacecraft heating, structural loading, vibration, sound pressure levels, and temperature and pressure during the launch phase.

Film boiling of mercury droplets

Vaporization times of mercury droplets in Leidenfrost film boiling on a flat horizontal plate are measured in an air atmosphere. Extreme care was used to prevent large amplitude droplet vibrations and surface wetting; therefore, these data can be compared to film boiling theory. Diffusion from the upper surface of the drop appears as a dominant mode of mass transfer from the drop. A closed-form analytical film boiling theory is developed to account for the diffusive evaporation. Reasonable agreement between data and theory is seen.

ATS-6 - Flight accelerometers

The Applications Technology Satellite-6 (ATS-6) flight accelerometers were designed to provide data for verifying the basic spacecraft vibration modes during launch, to update the analytical model of the ATA structure, and to provide a capability for detection and diagnosis of inflight and anomalies. The experiment showed accelerations less than 2.5 g during liftoff and 1.1 g or less during staging with frequencies below 80 Hz. Measured values were generally within 1 g of predicted.

Martian wind activity detected by a seismometer at Viking lander 2 site

Since the Viking lander 2 seismometer (Anderson et al., 1977) located on top of the lander is extremely sensitive to Martian winds, it can provide a record of Martian wind activity. The seismograph continuously samples the wind-induced lander vibration, and its output complements meteorological data. Some pertinent seismic data are presented along with results of a preliminary spectral analysis of the data. Attention is given to wind speed/seismic noise correlation, and to long-term variation and periodicity. The results indicate that wind variations on Mars are very regular in the summer and winter seasons. Winds are light in summer and exhibit a strong diurnal periodicity, the strongest winds occurring in the early afternoon. Winds become stronger and more irregular in autumn. In all seasons nighttime conditions are usually very quiet. The high wind season correlates with the global dust storm duration. Spring is characterized by very strong though variable wind activity. Other details are also presented.

Optical photometry with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory

The properties of optical photometric data obtainable with the 0.9-meter telescope of the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are described. The major differences between airborne and ground-based data are the absence of scintillation and the increased cosmic-ray background in the airborne data and the large size and vibration of the airborne images. The underlying cause of the large airborne images in not known although refraction in the turbulent boundary layer of the aircraft is suspected to be the major factor.

Fine time structure in the 1979 March 5 gamma ray burst

Data on the impulsive phase of the 1979 March 5 gamma ray burst, taken by three identical detectors aboard the Prognoz 7, Venera 11, and Venera 12 spacecraft with 2 ms time resolution, are presented. The first 200 ms of the time history may be described by an exponential decay with time constant of approximately 120 ms up to approximately 100 ms, and time constant of approximately 30 ms thereafter; at low energies, a pulsating component with a period of approximately 23 ms appears. The data could be consistent with torsional vibrations of a neutron star, the rotation of a rapidly spinning neutron star, or oscillations caused by interactions between hot plasma and a magnetic field.

Measurement of damping of graphite epoxy materials

Work on a damping measurement test apparatus is discussed. The device is designed to excite tube specimens in a vacuum chamber. Also some experiments were conducted on a tube specimen to confirm previously reported results. A table of data showing the results of forced vibration tests using a half ring and a free-free boundary is given. The main purpose was to study the effect of the frequency resolution on the damping ratio measurements.

An update of spacecraft dynamic environments induced by ground transportation

An update to a spacecraft transportation dynamic environments data base was developed based on data from recent transportation of spacecrafts. Vibration levels are significantly lower than those measured in 1966, while the shock response spectra are nearly the same. Ground shipping criteria and shipping practices, which have been very successful in preventing damage, are also summarized.

Dynamic Characteristics and Stability Analysis of Space Shuttle Main Engine Oxygen Pump

The dynamic characteristics of the Space Shuttle high pressure oxygen pump are presented. Experimental data is presented to show the vibration spectrum and response under actual engine operation and also in spin pit testing for balancing. The oxygen pump appears to be operating near a second critical speed and is sensitive to self excited aerodynamic cross coupling forces in the turbine and pump. An analysis is presented to show the improvement in pump stability by the application of turbulent flow seals, preburner seals, and pump shaft cross sectional modifications.

Efficient fault diagnosis of helicopter gearboxes

Application of a diagnostic system to a helicopter gearbox is presented. The diagnostic system is a nonparametric pattern classifier that uses a multi-valued influence matrix (MVIM) as its diagnostic model and benefits from a fast learning algorithm that enables it to estimate its diagnostic model from a small number of measurement-fault data. To test this diagnostic system, vibration measurements were collected from a helicopter gearbox test stand during accelerated fatigue tests and at various fault instances. The diagnostic results indicate that the MVIM system can accurately detect and diagnose various gearbox faults so long as they are included in training.

Total electron scattering and electronic state excitations cross sections for O2, CO, and CH4

Available electron collision cross section data concerning total and elastic scattering, vibrational excitation, and ionization for O2, CO, and CH4 have been critically reviewed, and a set of cross sections for modeling of planetary atmospheric behavior is recommended. Utilizing these recommended cross sections, we derived total electronic state excitation cross sections and upper limits for dissociation cross sections, which in the case of CH4 should very closely equal the actual dissociation cross section.

Spectral measurement of nonequilibrium arc-jet free-stream flow

Spectra of radiation emitted by the free-stream flow of air in an arcjet wind tunnel at NASA-Ames Research Center were studied experimentally. The arcjet produces a high energy gaseous flow that is expanded to low density and low temperature to produce high velocities in the free-stream for simulating atmospheric entry conditions. The gamma and the delta band systems of nitric oxide emitted by the free stream were measured in the second order. The NO-beta band system, which is in the same spectral region as the NO-gamma and NO-delta band systems, was not present in the data. Only transitions from the lowest vibrational level of the upper state of both the NO-gamma and NO-delta band systems were observed. The rotational temperature determined from these band systems was 660 +/- 50 deg K. The maximum possible vibrational temperature was determined to be less than 850 +/- 50 deg K. The electronic temperature determined from the ratio of the intensities of the NO-gamma and NO-delta band systems was 7560 +/- 340 K. The results indicate that the arcjet free-stream flow is in thermal nonequilibrium.
