Multi-Instrument Tools and Services to Access NASA Earth Science Data from the GSFC Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center

The presentation purpose is to describe multi-instrument tools and services that facilitate access and usability of NASA Earth science data at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). NASA's Earth observing system includes 14 satellites. Topics include EOSDIS facilities and system architecture, and overview of GSFC Earth Science Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) mission, Mirador data search, Giovanni, multi-instrument data exploration, Google Earth[TM], data merging, and applications.

Analysing the Advantages of High Temporal Resolution Geostationary MSG SEVIRI Data Compared to Polar Operational Environmental Satellite Data for Land Surface Monitoring in Africa

Since 1972, satellite remote sensing of the environment has been dominated by polar-orbiting sensors providing useful data for monitoring the earth s natural resources. However their observation and monitoring capacity are inhibited by daily to monthly looks for any given ground surface which often is obscured by frequent and persistent cloud cover creating large gaps in time series measurements. The launch of the Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellite into geostationary orbit has opened new opportunities for land surface monitoring. The Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) instrument on-board MSG with an imaging capability every 15 minutes which is substantially greater than any temporal resolution that can be obtained from existing polar operational environmental satellites (POES) systems currently in use for environmental monitoring. Different areas of the African continent were affected by droughts and floods in 2008 caused by periods of abnormally low and high rainfall, respectively. Based on the effectiveness of monitoring these events from Earth Observation (EO) data the current analyses show that the new generation of geostationary remote sensing data can provide higher temporal resolution cloud-free (less than 5 days) measurements of the environment as compared to existing POES systems. SEVIRI MSG 5-day continental scale composites will enable rapid assessment of environmental conditions and improved early warning of disasters for the African continent such as flooding or droughts. The high temporal resolution geostationary data will complement existing higher spatial resolution polar-orbiting satellite data for various dynamic environmental and natural resource applications of terrestrial ecosystems.

Making Earth Science Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Projects Data and Services at the GES DISC

NASA's Earth Science Program is dedicated to advancing Earth remote sensing and pioneering the scientific use of satellite measurements to improve human understanding of our home planet. Through the MEaSUREs Program, NASA is continuing its commitment to expand understanding of the Earth system using consistent data records. Emphasis is on linking together multiple data sources to form coherent time-series, and facilitating the use of extensive data in the development of comprehensive Earth system models. A primary focus of the MEaSUREs Program is the creation of Earth System Data Records (ESDRs). An ESDR is defined as a unified and coherent set of observations of a given parameter of the Earth system, which is optimized to meet specific requirements for addressing science questions. These records are critical for understanding Earth System processes; for the assessment of variability, long-term trends, and change in the Earth System; and for providing input and validation means to modeling efforts. Seven MEaSUREs projects will be archived and distributed through services at the Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC).

NASA In Situ Data Needs to Support the Operational Calibration and Validation of Ocean Color Satellite Data Products

Calibrating ocean color satellite instruments and validating their data products requires temporal and spatial abundances of high quality in situ oceanographic data. The Consortium for Ocean Leadership Ocean Observing Initiative (OOl) is currently implementing a distributed array of in-water sensors that could provide a significant contribution to future ocean color activities. This workshop will scope the optimal way to use and possibly supplement the planned OOl infrastructure to maximize its utility and relevance for calibration and validation activities that support existing and planned NASA ocean color missions. Here, I present the current state of the art of NASA validation of ocean color data products, with attention to autonomous time-series (e.g., the AERONET -OC network of above-water radiometers), and outline NASA needs for data quality assurance metrics and adherence to community-vetted data collection protocols

Data Assimilation of Photosynthetic Light-use Efficiency using Multi-angular Satellite Data: II Model Implementation and Validation

Spatially explicit and temporally continuous estimates of photosynthesis will be of great importance for increasing our understanding of and ultimately closing the terrestrial carbon cycle. Current capabilities to model photosynthesis, however, are limited by accurate enough representations of the complexity of the underlying biochemical processes and the numerous environmental constraints imposed upon plant primary production. A potentially powerful alternative to model photosynthesis through these indirect observations is the use of multi-angular satellite data to infer light-use efficiency (ε) directly from spectral reflectance properties in connection with canopy shadow fractions. Hall et al. (this issue) introduced a new approach for predicting gross ecosystem production that would allow the use of such observations in a data assimilation mode to obtain spatially explicit variations in ε from infrequent polar-orbiting satellite observations, while meteorological data are used to account for the more dynamic responses of ε to variations in environmental conditions caused by changes in weather and illumination. In this second part of the study we implement and validate the approach of Hall et al. (this issue) across an ecologically diverse array of eight flux-tower sites in North America using data acquired from the Compact High Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (CHRIS) and eddy-flux observations. Our results show significantly enhanced estimates of ε and therefore cumulative gross ecosystem production (GEP) over the course of one year at all examined sites. We also demonstrate that ε is greatly heterogeneous even across small study areas. Data assimilation and direct inference of GEP from space using a new, proposed sensor could therefore be a significant step towards closing the terrestrial carbon cycle.

Application of Spectral Analysis Techniques in the Intercomparison of Aerosol Data: 1. an EOF Approach to the Spatial-Temporal Variability of Aerosol Optical Depth Using Multiple Remote Sensing Data Sets

Many remote sensing techniques and passive sensors have been developed to measure global aerosol properties. While instantaneous comparisons between pixel-level data often reveal quantitative differences, here we use Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis, also known as Principal Component Analysis, to demonstrate that satellite-derived aerosol optical depth (AOD) data sets exhibit essentially the same spatial and temporal variability and are thus suitable for large-scale studies. Analysis results show that the first four EOF modes of AOD account for the bulk of the variance and agree well across the four data sets used in this study (i.e., Aqua MODIS, Terra MODIS, MISR, and SeaWiFS). Only SeaWiFS data over land have slightly different EOF patterns. Globally, the first two EOF modes show annual cycles and are mainly related to Sahara dust in the northern hemisphere and biomass burning in the southern hemisphere, respectively. After removing the mean seasonal cycle from the data, major aerosol sources, including biomass burning in South America and dust in West Africa, are revealed in the dominant modes due to the different interannual variability of aerosol emissions. The enhancement of biomass burning associated with El Niño over Indonesia and central South America is also captured with the EOF technique.

Classifying Floating Potential Measurement Unit Data Products as Science Data

We are Co-Investigators for the Floating Potential Measurement Unit (FPMU) on the International Space Station (ISS) and members of the FPMU operations and data analysis team. We are providing this memo for the purpose of classifying raw and processed FPMU data products and ancillary data as NASA science data with unrestricted, public availability in order to best support science uses of the data.

Snow Process Estimation Over the Extratropical Andes Using a Data Assimilation Framework Integrating MERRA Data and Landsat Imagery

A data assimilation framework was implemented with the objective of obtaining high resolution retrospective snow water equivalent (SWE) estimates over several Andean study basins. The framework integrates Landsat fractional snow covered area (fSCA) images, a land surface and snow depletion model, and the Modern Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) reanalysis as a forcing data set. The outputs are SWE and fSCA fields (1985-2015) at a resolution of 90 m that are consistent with the observed depletion record. Verification using in-situ snow surveys showed significant improvements in the accuracy of the SWE estimates relative to forward model estimates, with increases in correlation (0.49-0.87) and reductions in root mean square error (0.316 m to 0.129 m) and mean error (-0.221 m to 0.009 m). A sensitivity analysis showed that the framework is robust to variations in physiography, fSCA data availability and a priori precipitation biases. Results from the application to the headwater basin of the Aconcagua River showed how the forward model versus the fSCA-conditioned estimate resulted in different quantifications of the relationship between runoff and SWE, and different correlation patterns between pixel-wise SWE and ENSO. The illustrative results confirm the influence that ENSO has on snow accumulation for Andean basins draining into the Pacific, with ENSO explaining approximately 25% of the variability in near-peak (1 September) SWE values. Our results show how the assimilation of fSCA data results in a significant improvement upon MERRA-forced modeled SWE estimates, further increasing the utility of the MERRA data for high-resolution snow modeling applications.

The Open Data Repository's Data Publisher

We have quickly gathered a diverse set of databases that have significant activity. Researchers are using them on a daily basis from collection through all phases of research. Focus on: (1) Linked data and semantic web integration are fundamental to our long term plans. (2) Citation system is critical before our first full release. Snapshot-based citation generation for data sets or objects. As we expand our feature set, expect the system will: (1) Provide a very high level of provenance for any data housed in the software. (2) Make data management beneficial to the researcher throughout the research process. (3) Create living archives that allow citable snapshots of data and summaries of the changes since the snapshot was created.

GEONEX Data Products: Geostationary Satellite Derived Land Surface and Atmospheric Public Data Products

The latest generation of geostationary satellites carry sensors such as the Advanced Baseline Imager (GOES-16/17) and the Advanced Himawari Imager (Himawari-8/9) that closely mimic the spatial and spectral characteristics of MODIS and VIIRS, useful for monitoring land surface conditions. The NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) team at Ames Research Center has embarked on a collaborative effort among scientists from NASA and NOAA exploring the feasibility of producing operational land surface products similar to those from MODIS/VIIRS. The team built a processing pipeline called GEONEX that is capable of converting raw geostationary data into routine products of Fires, surface reflectances, vegetation indices, LAI/FPAR, ET and GPP/NPP using algorithms adapted from both NASA/EOS and NOAA/GOES-R programs. The GEONEX pipeline will begin to produce provisional data products to be consumed by external collaborators and the academic community. In order to better inform and introduce the GEONEX products to the science community, the provisional products shall be distributed from the NAS data portal, located at data.nas.nasa.gov, and simple webpage at www.nasa.gov/geonex has been deployed, which describes any algorithms used in deriving the products, user manuals and data file information. We will also update the status of the data processing, on the website and provide links to the latest datasets, and use a geonex mailing list, using lists.nasa.gov.

Advancing Open Science Through Innovative Data System Solutions: The Joint ESA-NASA Multi-Mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform (MAAP)'s Data Ecosystem

Collaborative open science practices are changing the way research is conducted. These changes affect how scientists work together on data, code and information. Data systems enhance open science by offering forward thinking technological solutions, such as providing data and computation on the cloud, to enable collaboration, sharing and analysis. In this paper, we present our vision for a conceptual data system on the cloud that enables open science. We also present our work on the Multi-Mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform (MAAP)which has served as a pathfinder data system for this conceptual approach.

Science Utilizing Data from Spire Global as Part of the NASA Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program

As part of the Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition (CSDA) Program, NASA has evaluated data from Spire Global, Inc. and subsequently established a sustained purchase agreement with them. The primary goal of this agreement is to acquire and make available Spire datasets to the research community with the aim of enhancing the science objectives through the Earth Science Division (ESD), though there are noted applications to the NASA Heliophysics Division as well. This talk will present the data access details and holdings of Spire data by the CSDA Program, including those from radio occultation and reflectometry. It will also present selected scientific results and applications of these data from both the pilot evaluation and the sustained purchase stages to highlight their use within the ESD research portfolio.

The SkyView Data Model: Handling Heterogeneous Data Using Dynamic Software

The SkyView Virtual Telescope allows users to query over 75 distinct datasets of astronomical imagery including more than 190 distinct surveys. These holdings are extraordinarily diverse ranging over more than 15 orders of magnitude in frequency and5 orders of magnitude in resolution. To accommodate supporting these data, SkyView has developed a simple data model for surveys. Nor surprisingly, given the diverse origins of the datasets included, some surveys do not easily fit within this model. The conventional approach to dealing with such outliers is to build a layer on top of the actual data which more faithfully adheres to the data model. With SkyView we have used a somewhat alternative approach. We allow the data model to define new behaviors in the SkyView code itself either by customizing the use of existing capabilities or pointing to new classes that have non-standard behavior. This approach is feasible since in modern computer languages the code that is run can be selected dynamically with new classes completely overriding traditional behavior. This paper describes this approach and considers how it may become more useful as our software structures become increasingly dynamically linked.

Tuning a variational autoencoder for data accountability problem in the Mars Science Laboratory ground data system

The Mars Curiosity rover is frequently sending back engineering and science data that goes through a pipeline of systems before reaching its final destination at the mission operations center making it prone to volume loss and data corruption. A ground data system analysis (GDSA) team is charged with the monitoring of this flow of information and the detection of anomalies in that data in order to request a re-transmission when necessary. This work presents ∆-MADS, a derivative-free optimization method applied for tuning the architecture and hyperparameters of a variational autoencoder trained to detect the data with missing patches in order to assist the GDSA team in their mission.

NASA’s Atmospheric Science Data Center’s Approach to a Cloud-Based Model of Ingest, Archival, and Distribution of TEMPO Data: Methods, Challenges, and Best Practices

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA provides atmospheric science data products and services to the science community, including enhanced search and subsetting capabilities for numerous datasets. The ASDC is the official Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) of record for the upcoming Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO) instrument. TEMPO will be situated on a geostationary satellite positioned at a longitude near the center of the conterminous United States and focused on North America, making hourly swaths of its field of regard from east to west. ASDC’s data products are currently hosted locally and services (e.g., spatial and temporal subsetting) are managed on premises. The ASDC is planning to provide TEMPO data and services in the cloud through the Earthdata Search platform. This presentation will discuss the ASDC’s approach to a cloud-based model of ingest, archival, and distribution of TEMPO data. Methods, challenges, best practices, lessons learned, and future plans will be discussed.

Open Science in Action: The Role of SWxSOC in Expedited Data Release and Cloud-based Data Processing for Heliophysics Missions

NASA's Space Weather Science Operations Center (SWxSOC) is an effort to develop a multi-mission Science Operations Center for the community and specifically Space Weather missions that require data products to be released consistently and quickly. The SWxSOC is committed to Open Science in its approach to software development and data product releases. We are currently supporting the Heliophysics Environmental and Radiation Measurement Experiment Suite (HERMES) that will fly on the Lunar Gateway and the PADRE Small Sat mission. SWxSOC has established an open-source, reusable solution for transitioning data management from on-premises to the cloud, processing data files, and setting up a cloud-based analysis environment to monitor instrument anomalies. Leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) and making open-source tools available on GitHub, HERMES exemplifies NASA's commitment to open-source standardization, showcasing the real-world effectiveness of cloud technology in data processing, analysis, and observability. This enhances current operations and ensures faster, standardized deployments for future missions.

Enabling Dynamic Data Governance in Science: Design, Implementation, and Future Directions of the Modern Data Governance Framework

As scientific data volumes exponentially grow, dynamic, flexible and open approaches to data governance are needed. In this paper, we describe our efforts to build an open, scientific Modern Data Governance Framework (mDGF) that streamlines and makes actionable data governance requirements for projects and data providers. We present the goals and design of the mDGF. We also share our envisioned usage for the mDGF and planned future work.

Improving Boundary Layer Data Assimilation Using Observation Data from Multiple Observing Systems in the NASA GEOS System

The Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) is a complex interface that mediates energy and moisture exchanges between the Earth’s surface and atmosphere. Accurate simulation and observation of PBL characteristics, such as PBL height and thermodynamic structure, have proven to be a challenge. In our latest efforts, we have focused on improving PBL thermodynamic structure using data from multiple observing systems in the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS), developed by the NASA Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO). We present strategies and results from assimilating PBL height data derived from radiosondes, GNSS radio occultation, space-based lidar (CALIPSO, CATS, IceSat-2), ground-based lidar (MPLNET), and radar wind profilers, including a novel global PBL height analysis dataset. We also discuss the impacts of better representing capping inversions by using PBL height data together with other observations in GEOS through adjustments to the background error covariance. Long-term statistics of the impact of assimilating and utilizing PBL height data in GEOS are presented. In addition, we explore an innovative approach to assimilate GNSS-RO refractivity data in the lower troposphere.
