Overall evaluation of LANDSAT (ERTS) follow on imagery for cartographic application

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT imagery can be operationally applied to the revision of nautical charts. The imagery depicts shallow seas in a form that permits accurate planimetric image mapping of features to 20 meters of depth where the conditions of water clarity and bottom reflection are suitable. LANDSAT data also provide an excellent simulation of the earth's surface, for such applications as aeronautical charting and radar image correlation in aircraft and aircraft simulators. Radiometric enhancement, particularly edge enhancement, a technique only marginally successful with aerial photographs has proved to be high value when applied to LANDSAT data.

The use of LANDSAT imagery to locate uncharted coastal features on the Labrador coast

A survey of several offshore islands, rocks and shoals on the Labrador Coast was performed, using LANDSAT imagery to assist in the location of uncharted hydrographic features. Several satellite coverages of the coast were studied prior to the survey, and suspected shoal points identified. Using map-derived control points and monocomparator measurements of the LANDSAT images, the positions of these points were determined by mathematical adjustment to an estimated position accuracy of 150 meters. As a result, on the survey, an uncharted island and eight uncharted drying rocks, which might easily have escaped detection from a survey ship, were verified and positioned. To check the accuracy of the coordinates derived from LANDSAT, three islands were positioned by standard ground survey methods. The positional differences, all less than 150 meters, are not plottable at the scale of the existing offshore charts. The LANDSAT positions were also used to control aerial photography of a shoal area for office compilation of a hydrographic chart.

Orbit Selection for Earth Observation Missions

The orbit selection process is simplified for most earth-oriented satellite missions by a restriction to circular orbits, which reduces the primary orbit characteristics to be determined to only two: altitude and inclination. A number of important mission performance characteristics depend on these choices, however, so a major part of the orbit selection task is concerned with developing the correlating relationships in clear and convenient forms to provide a basis for rational orbit selection procedures. The present approach to that task is organized around two major areas of mission performance, orbit plane precession and coverage pattern development, whose dependence on altitude and inclination is delineated graphically in design chart form. These charts provide a visual grasp of the relationships between the quantities cited above, as well as other important mission performance parameters including viewing time of day (solar), sensor swath width (and fields of view), swath sequencing, and pattern repeat condition and repeat periods.

Simplified solution for elliptical-contact deformation between two elastic solids

A linear regression by the method of least squares is made on the geometric variables that occur in the equation for elliptical-contact deformation. The ellipticity and the complete elliptic integrals of the first and second kind are expressed as a function of the x,y-plane principal radii. The ellipticity was varied from 1 (circular contact) to 10 (a configuration approaching line contact). The procedure for solving these variables without the use of charts or a high-speed computer would be quite tedious. These simplified equations enable one to calculate easily the elliptical-contact deformation to within 3 percent accuracy without resorting to charts or numerical methods.

Multichannel electrochemical microbial detection unit

The paper describes the design and capabilities of a compact multichannel electrochemical unit devised to detect and automatically indicate detection time length of bacteria. By connecting this unit to a strip-chart recorder, a permanent record is obtained of the end points and growth curves for each of eight channels. The experimental setup utilizing the multichannel unit consists of a test tube (25 by 150 mm) containing a combination redox electrode plus 18 ml of lauryl tryptose broth and positioned in a 35-C water bath. Leads from the electrodes are connected to the multichannel unit, which in turn is connected to a strip-chart recorder. After addition of 2.0 ml of inoculum to the test tubes, depression of the push-button starter activates the electronics, timer, and indicator light for each channel. The multichannel unit is employed to test tenfold dilutions of various members of the Enterobacteriaceae group, and a typical dose-response curve is presented.

Study of design constraints on helicopter noise

A means of estimating the noise generated by a helicopter main rotor using information which is generally available during the preliminary design phase of aircraft development is presented. The method utilizes design charts and tables which do not require an understanding of acoustical theory or computational procedures in order to predict the perceived noise level, a weighted sound pressure level, or C weighted sound pressure level of a single hovering rotor. A method for estimating the effective perceived noise level in forward flight is also included. In order to give the designer an assessment of the relative rotor performance, which may be traded off against noise, an additional chart for estimating the percent of available rotor thrust which must be expended in lifting the rotor and drive system, is included as well as approach for comparing the subjective acceptability of various rotors once the absolute sound pressure levels are predicted.

Uranus mission options

Options for delivery of Uranus payloads are covered extensively. Launch energy charts are supplied for ballistic trajectories to Uranus for direct, Jupiter gravity-assist, and Saturn gravity-assist missions launching from 1982 to 1995. Both early reconnaissance (flyby) and orbiter missions are considered. Performance charts for low-thrust, Delta Vega, planetary gravity-assist, and combinations of these modes are plotted in terms of net orbited mass and trip time to Uranus. Discussion and illustration of the effects of the unique Uranus system oritentation on Uranus encounter geometry with trajectory arrival date is covered. Example mission designs are characterized for several delivery modes.

Performance analysis for collector-side reflector systems

The F-Chart method of solar collector performance evaluation is extended to a flat-plate collector system augmented with planar side reflectors. The modified F-Chart evaluations show that the augmentation of the collector has approximately the effect of increasing the collector area by 60%, and the energy supplied by the collector better matches the load. The installed reflector cost of about 10% of the collector cost is shown to be well justified.

A comparison of Type III metric radio bursts and global solar potential field models

Evidence of coronal magnetic fields from polarized metric type III radio bursts is compared with (1) global potential field models, (2) direct averages of the observed photospheric magnetic field, and (3) H-alpha synoptic charts. The comparison clearly indicates both that the principal aspects of type III burst radiation are understood and that global potential field models are a significantly more accurate representation of coronal magnetic field structure than either the large-scale photospheric field or H-alpha synoptic charts.

A Method for Rapid Determination of the Icing Limit of a Body in Terms of the Stream Conditions

The effects of existing frictional heating were analyzed to determine the conditions under which ice formations on aircraft surfaces can be prevented. A method is presented for rapidly determining by means of charts the combination of-Mach number, altitude, and stream temperature which will maintain an ice-free surface in an icing cloud. The method can be applied to both subsonic and supersonic flow. The charts presented are for Mach numbers up to 1.8 and pressure altitudes from sea level to 45,000 feet.

The reduction, verification and interpretation of MAGSAT magnetic data over Canada

Analysis of Investigator B tapes was extended to use a statistical screening of individual data points in each grid cell over the map area. The mean value of data from each cell was computed and all data values more than 4nT from the mean were rejected. The revised mean and standard deviation was computed. The average standard deviation for all map grid cells was 1.4nT for the scalar anomaly map and about 2nT for the vector component anomaly maps. At this stage, the grid cell is larger and spatial resolution lower for the vector maps than for the scalar maps, because the vector components are considerably more disturbed and more data points were rejected. An approach for altitude adjustment is in progress so that corrections can be made and data reduction procede. To evaluate the use of scalar and vector MAGSAT data for the production of regional magnetic charts, charts of the north, east, vertical, and scalar field derived from MAGSAT and from Canadian aeromagnetic data were compared. It appears possible to retrieve crustal signals from the horizontal vector components despite external disturbance fields at high latitude.

Documentation for the machine-readable version of the catalogue of individual UBV and UVBY beta observations in the region of the Orion OB1 association

The machine-readable files of individual UBV observations of 106 stars in the vicinity of the Orion Nebula (the Sword region) and individual uvby beta observations of 508 stars in all regions of the Orion OB 1 association are described. For the UBV data the stars are identified by their Brun numbers, with cross identifications to the chart numbers used in Warren and Hesser; the uv by beta stars are identified by the aforementioned chart numbers and HD, BD or P ( = pi); numbers in that order of preference.

R associations. VI - The reddening law in dust clouds and the nature of early-type emission stars in nebulosity from a study of five associations

Positions, identification charts, UBVRIKLMN photometry and spectral types are given for stars, illuminating reflection nebulae that are visible on the POSS prints, which have been identified in five associations. With a ratio of total to selective extinction of 4.2, the reddening law applicable to the dust clouds in which the stars are embedded is steeper than normal. The five associations exhibit 18 early-type stars with circumstellar shells, of which those with spectral types earlier than B5 characteristically have weak IR excesses, in contrast to the strong excesses indicative of circumstellar dust, of later-type stars. Color-magnitude charts show a distribution lying above the ZAMS by up to about 2 mag for both the circumstellar shell stars and those classified as rapid rotators. It is suggested that (1) rapid rotation accounts for the scatter in the color-magnitude diagram, and (2) many of the nebulous early-type emission-line stars are rapid rotators rather than pre-main sequence objects.
