Constrained optimization of image restoration filters

A linear shift-invariant preprocessing technique is described which requires no specific knowledge of the image parameters and which is sufficiently general to allow the effective radius of the composite imaging system to be minimized while constraining other system parameters to remain within specified limits.

Separation of variables in the special diagonal Hamilton-Jacobi equation: Application to the dynamical problem of a particle constrained on a moving surface

For a time-dependent, n-dimensional, special diagonal Hamilton-Jacobi equation a necessary and sufficient condition for the separation of variables to yield a complete integral of the form was established by specifying the admissible forms in terms of arbitrary functions. A complete integral was then expressed in terms of these arbitrary functions and also the n irreducible constants. As an application of the results obtained for the two-dimensional Hamilton-Jacobi equation, analysis was made for a comparatively wide class of dynamical problems involving a particle moving in Euclidean three-dimensional space under the action of external forces but constrained on a moving surface. All the possible cases in which this equation had a complete integral of the form were obtained and these are tubulated for reference.

Governing equations for vibrating constrained-layer damping sandwich plates and beams.

A simple differential equation is derived to describe constrained-layer damping in nonsymmetric sandwich plates and beams composed of isotropic and homogeneous layers. The natural boundary conditions related to this equation are determined and some typical numerical results obtained by this equation are given. The equation is valid within the linear theories of elasticity and viscoelasticity in the absence of any constraints on thicknesses, positions, symmetries, and densities of the layers.

Constrained low-thrust guidance.

Constrained low thrust guidance algorithms for three axis and spin-stabilized, constant power, solar electric propelled spacecraft on fixed time rendezvous missions are developed. A 'bang-bang' type of minimum-propellant thrust program is used. Control constraints arise from the specification that the thrust vector must remain fixed relative to the solar panels. The guidance law is derived from deterministic linear perturbation theory and is controllable to first order on trajectories containing at least two thrust arcs. The number and timing of guidance updates and the effectiveness of the guidance law in compensating for state and control estimation biases and uncertainties are discussed. Numerical comparisons between the optimal control and the restricted control case are presented on a Encke comet rendezvous.

A transformation method for constrained-function minimization

A direct method for constrained-function minimization is discussed. The method involves the construction of an appropriate function mapping all of one finite dimensional space onto the region defined by the constraints. Functions which produce such a transformation are constructed for a variety of constraint regions including, for example, those arising from linear and quadratic inequalities and equalities. In addition, the computational performance of this method is studied in the situation where the Davidon-Fletcher-Powell algorithm is used to solve the resulting unconstrained problem. Good performance is demonstrated for 19 test problems by achieving rapid convergence to a solution from several widely separated starting points.

Regions of constrained maximum likelihood parameter identifiability

This short paper considers the parameter-identification problem of general discrete-time, nonlinear, multiple input-multiple output dynamic systems with Gaussian white distributed measurement errors. Knowledge of the system parameterization is assumed to be available. Regions of constrained maximum likelihood (CML) parameter identifiability are established. A computation procedure employing interval arithmetic is proposed for finding explicit regions of parameter identifiability for the case of linear systems.

Regions of constrained maximum likelihood parameter identifiability

This paper considers the parameter identification problem of general discrete-time, nonlinear, multiple-input/multiple-output dynamic systems with Gaussian-white distributed measurement errors. Knowledge of the system parameterization is assumed to be known. Regions of constrained maximum likelihood (CML) parameter identifiability are established. A computation procedure employing interval arithmetic is proposed for finding explicit regions of parameter identifiability for the case of linear systems. It is shown that if the vector of true parameters is locally CML identifiable, then with probability one, the vector of true parameters is a unique maximal point of the maximum likelihood function in the region of parameter identifiability and the CML estimation sequence will converge to the true parameters.

Optimum constrained image restoration filters

The research described centered on development of an optimum image restoration filter (IRF) minimizing the radius of gyration of the corrected or composite system point-spread function (P-SF) subject to contraints, and reducing 2-dimensional spatial smearing or blurring of an image. The constraints are imposed on the radius of gyration of the IRF P-SF, the total restored image noise power, and the shape of the composite system frequency spectrum. The image degradation corresponds to mapping many points from the original image into a single resolution element. The P-SF is obtained as solution to a set of simultaneous differential equations obeying nonlinear integral constraints. Truncation errors due to edge effects are controlled by constraining the radius of gyration of the IRF P-SF. An iterative technique suppresses sidelobes of the composite system P-SF.

Generalization of the Manley-Rowe relations for non-periodic signals constrained in bandwidth with finite energy

General relations for the energy spectral densities of nonperiodic signals constrained in bandwidth in nonlinear reactances are derived. It is assumed that the charge-voltage characteristics of the reactances are polynomials. In addition certain conditions for the frequency bands of the signals must be met. By contrast with the Manley-Rowe relations integrals with respect to frequency appear instead of the ratios power over frequency. The integrands are energy spectral densities divided by frequency. For parametric devices inequalities can be derived for the ratios of the energy levels in the different circuits and the limiting frequencies of the energy spectral densities. With these inequalities it is possible to determine limits for the energy levels.

Use of constrained optimization in the conceptual design of a medium-range subsonic transport

Constrained parameter optimization was used to perform the optimal conceptual design of a medium range transport configuration. The impact of choosing a given performance index was studied, and the required income for a 15 percent return on investment was proposed as a figure of merit. A number of design constants and constraint functions were systematically varied to document the sensitivities of the optimal design to a variety of economic and technological assumptions. A comparison was made for each of the parameter variations between the baseline configuration and the optimally redesigned configuration.

Application of constrained optimization to active control of aeroelastic response

Active control of aeroelastic response is a complex in which the designer usually tries to satisfy many criteria which are often conflicting. To further complicate the design problem, the state space equations describing this type of control problem are usually of high order, involving a large number of states to represent the flexible structure and unsteady aerodynamics. Control laws based on the standard Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) method are of the same high order as the aeroelastic plant. To overcome this disadvantage of the LQG mode, an approach developed for designing low order optimal control laws which uses a nonlinear programming algorithm to search for the values of the control law variables that minimize a composite performance index, was extended to the constrained optimization problem. The method involves searching for the values of the control law variables that minimize a basic performance index while satisfying several inequality constraints that describe the design criteria. The method is applied to gust load alleviation of a drone aircraft.

Accelerated convergence of structured banded systems using constrained corrections

An efficient iterative method for solving a structured banded system of equations is described. The method was developed for a full potential flow program and uses a basic interation step, a dynamic relation step, and a multigrid concept of constraining iterative corrections. The solution of a large linear system of equations is examined. Efficient iterative methods have become attractive for large problems. In the nonlinear cases, these iterations may be effectively merged to improve convergence rates.

Constrained multibody system dynamics: An automated approach

The governing equations for constrained multibody systems are formulated in a manner suitable for their automated, numerical development and solution. The closed loop problem of multibody chain systems is addressed. The governing equations are developed by modifying dynamical equations obtained from Lagrange's form of d'Alembert's principle. The modifications is based upon a solution of the constraint equations obtained through a zero eigenvalues theorem, is a contraction of the dynamical equations. For a system with n-generalized coordinates and m-constraint equations, the coefficients in the constraint equations may be viewed as constraint vectors in n-dimensional space. In this setting the system itself is free to move in the n-m directions which are orthogonal to the constraint vectors.

The Apollo 16 regolith - A petrographically-constrained chemical mixing model

A mixing model for Apollo 16 regolith samples has been developed, which differs from other A-16 mixing models in that it is both petrographically constrained and statistically sound. The model was developed using three components representative of rock types present at the A-16 site, plus a representative mare basalt. A linear least-squares fitting program employing the chi-squared test and sum of components was used to determine goodness of fit. Results for surface soils indicate that either there are no significant differences between Cayley and Descartes material at the A-16 site or, if differences do exist, they have been obscured by meteoritic reworking and mixing of the lithologies.

Solution of nonlinear multivariable constrained systems using a gradient projection digital algorithm that is insensitive to the initial state

Optimal digital control of nonlinear multivariable constrained systems was studied. The optimal controller in the form of an algorithm was improved and refined by reducing running time and storage requirements. A particularly difficult system of nine nonlinear state variable equations was chosen as a test problem for analyzing and improving the controller. Lengthy analysis, modeling, computing and optimization were accomplished. A remote interactive teletype terminal was installed. Analysis requiring computer usage of short duration was accomplished using Tuskegee's VAX 11/750 system.
