Production and transfer of UV photons in non-homogeneous spherical clouds

Due to screening by dust particles, the UV radiation field of interstellar origin is practically inexistent within very dense interstellar clouds. However, it appears possible that the cosmic-ray excitation of the Lyman and Werner systems of the hydrogen molecule could originate a chemically-significant flux of UV photons even within such dense clouds. Computations of photon fluxes were carried out for two different models of radial density distribution inside the cloud (gas and dust densities were assumed to have the same density distribution). The result strongly support the suggestion that the low energy cosmic rays may generate inside dense interstellar clouds UV radiation fields that may significantly contribute to the gas and dust evolution.

A homogeneous sample of binary galaxies: Basic observational properties

A survey of optical characteristics for 585 binary systems, satisfying a condition of apparent isolation on the sky, is presented. Influences of various selection effects distorting the average parameters of the sample are noted. The pair components display mutual similarity over all the global properties: luminosity, diameter, morphological type, mass-to-luminosity ratio, angular momentum etc., which is not due only to selection effects. The observed correlations must be caused by common origin of pair members. Some features (nuclear activity, color index) could acquire similarity during synchronous evolution of double galaxies. Despite the observed isolation, the sample of double systems is seriously contaminated by accidental pairs, and also by members of groups and clusters. After removing false pairs estimates of orbital mass-to-luminosity ratio range from 0 to 30 f(solar), with the mean value (7.8 plus or minus 0.7) f(solar). Binary galaxies possess nearly circular orbits with a typical eccentrity e = 0.25, probably resulting from evolutionary selection driven by component mergers under dynamical friction. The double-galaxy population with space abundance 0.12 plus or minus 0.02 and characteristic merger timescale 0.2 H(exp -1) may significantly influence the rate of dynamical evolution of galaxies.

Modeling solar flare conduction fronts. I - Homogeneous plasmas and ion-acoustic turbulence. II - Inhomogeneous plasmas and ambipolar electric fields

A one-dimensional, electrostatic, particle-in-cell simulation is used here to model the expansion of a heated electron population in a coronal loop during a solar flare and the characteristics of the associated X-ray emissions. The hot electrons expand outward from the localized region, creating an ambipolar electric field which accelerates a return current of cooler, ambient electrons. Ion-acoustic waves are generated by the return currents as proposed by Brown et al. (1979), but they play little or no role in containing energetic electrons and the conduction front proposed by Brown et al. does not form. The X-ray emission efficiency of the electrons is too low in the corona for them to be the source of hard X-ray bursts. The particle dynamics changes dramatically if the heated plasma is at low altitudes and expands upward into the more tenuous plasma at higher altitudes. Two important applications of this finding are the radio-frequency heating of the corona and the collisional heating of the chromosphere by precipitating energetic electrons. In both cases, the overlying plasma has a density that is too low to supply a balancing return current to the expanding hot electrons. As a result, an ambipolar electric field develops that tends to confine the energetic electrons behind a front that propagate outward at about the speed of sound.

Modelling a nickel cadmium battery as a homogeneous device

A computer model of the nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd) battery cell has been developed. This one-dimensional macrohomogeneous model predicts performance for Ni-Cd battery cells based on electrochemical phenomena. Reaction rates, concentrations, current densities, porosities, and potentials are predicted over a range of conditions. A description of the model, some initial results, and plans for continued development are presented.

Homogeneous Premixed and Nonpremixed Flames in Microgravity - A Review

Combustion studies under microgravitational conditions are discussed in which fire-safety issues, near-limit phenomena, and flammability limits are addressed. The studies use ground-based drop towers to produce up to 5 s of about 10 exp -6 g and aircraft facilities to generate up to 20 s of about 10 exp -2 g. The limits of flammability and radiative-heat loss are important research objectives, and experimentally derived values are discussed. Other phenomena are reported including stationary spherical flames and self-extinguishing flames, and the effects of the Taylor instability are documented in the experiments. The flame-surface geometry is examined concurrently by means of numerical simulations, and flame processes are concluded to be unique under microgravity except when the flow velocities are large.

The spin state and homogeneity of Comet Halley's nucleus

The present model of the spin rate of Comet Halley, which takes the form of an excited, axially symmetric rotator with prolate spheroid shape, accommodates both the imaging data from the Vega and Giotto encounters and a range of ground-based data for CN jets and shells, C2 production rates, and photometric variability. The model ratio of moments-of-inertia maxima to minima, at 2.28, implies a nearly constant density distribution throughout its interior. One of the five localized areas on the nucleus which dominate the activity observed appears to be uniquely responsible for the initiation of CN-shell boundaries which propagate through the coma, and may be indicative of either large-scale chemical inhomogeneity or a surface region with unusual physical structure.

Statistics of gamma-ray bursts - Homogeneous spherical models

Early reports from the BATSE experiment seem to suggest that the observed gamma-ray bursts occur in a highly flattened region of space. This inference, however, is contradicted by the apparent isotropy of the bursts. Here, it is demonstrated that this apparent dilemma can be resolved in a straightforward manner if bursts occur in a bounded spherical volume centered about the observer. Such a geometrical distribution of the bursts can be consistent with the apparent isotropy of the bursts. Two different models in which the burst population is uniformly distributed in a bounded spherical region of space are considered.

Infrared spectroscopy of homogeneously nucleated hydrazine aerosols - Disordered and crystalline phases

It is shown that aerosols generated at low temperatures and high condensation rate spontaneously form in a highly crystalline state. The resonant absorption bands in the IR spectra of these highly crystalline particles are much sharper than any reported previously in the bulk, and reveal details in the N-H vibrational bands that have not been previously observed. A disordered phase is also observed at somewhat higher temperatures. These results are consistent with this being a supercooled liquid. The fact that the spectra associated with these two aerosol phases are quite different is important to any future attempts at detecting hydrazine aerosols in planetary atmospheres by remote sensing techniques.

Isentropic phase changes in dissociating gases and the method of sound dispersion for the investigation of homogeneous gas reactions with very high speed : Conclusion

The analytical results of Part I are also applied to sound dispersion by friction and heat conduction, An irreversible change of momentum, energy, and type of particle corresponding to friction, heat conduction, and diffusion effects can appear both in the direction of the sound field and traverse to it. Longitudinal damping, the coupling of longitudinal damping and that due to chemical and physical changes, and coupling of diffusion and compositional changes are treated for a plane sound wave of infinite extent. The same principles are also applied to sound effects in cylindrical tubes. The limitations of the method are discussed in some detail.

Similarity states of homogeneous stably-stratified turbulence at infinite Froude number

We present evidence of similarity states which may develop inhomogeneous stably-stratified flows if a dimensionless group in addition to the Reynolds number, the so-called Froude number, is sufficiently large. Here, we define the Froude number as the ratio of the internal wave time-scale to the turbulence time-scale. We examine three different similarity states which may develop depending on the initial conditions of the velocity and density fields. Theoretical arguments and results of large-eddy simulations will be presented. We will conclude this report with some speculative thoughts on similarity states which may develop in stably-stratified turbulence at arbitrary Froude number as well as our future research plans in this area.

Rapid distortion analysis and direct simulation of compressible homogeneous turbulence at finite Mach number

The effect of rapid mean compression on compressible turbulence at a range of turbulent Mach numbers is investigated. Rapid distortion theory (RDT) and direct numerical simulation results for the case of axial (one-dimensional) compression are used to illustrate the existence of two distinct rapid compression regimes. These regimes are set by the relationships between the timescales of the mean distortion, the turbulence, and the speed of sound. A general RDT formulation is developed and is proposed as a means of improving turbulence models for compressible flows.
