Vision 2040: A Roadmap for Integrated, Multiscale Modeling and Simulation of Materials and Systems

Over the last few decades, advances in high-performance computing, new materials characterization methods, and, more recently, an emphasis on integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) and additive manufacturing have been a catalyst for multiscale modeling and simulation-based design of materials and structures in the aerospace industry. While these advances have driven significant progress in the development of aerospace components and systems, that progress has been limited by persistent technology and infrastructure challenges that must be overcome to realize the full potential of integrated materials and systems design and simulation modeling throughout the supply chain. As a result, NASA's Transformational Tools and Technology (TTT) Project sponsored a study (performed by a diverse team led by Pratt & Whitney) to define the potential 25-year future state required for integrated multiscale modeling of materials and systems (e.g., load-bearing structures) to accelerate the pace and reduce the expense of innovation in future aerospace and aeronautical systems. This report describes the findings of this 2040 Vision study (e.g., the 2040 vision state; the required interdependent core technical work areas, Key Element (KE); identified gaps and actions to close those gaps; and major recommendations) which constitutes a community consensus document as it is a result of over 450 professionals input obtain via: 1) four society workshops (AIAA, NAFEMS, and two TMS), 2) community-wide survey, and 3) the establishment of 9 expert panels (one per KE) consisting on average of 10 non-team members from academia, government and industry to review, update content, and prioritize gaps and actions. The study envisions the development of a cyber-physical-social ecosystem comprised of experimentally verified and validated computational models, tools, and techniques, along with the associated digital tapestry, that impacts the entire supply chain to enable cost-effective, rapid, and revolutionary design of fit-for-purpose materials, components, and systems. Although the vision focused on aeronautics and space applications, it is believed that other engineering communities (e.g., automotive, biomedical, etc.) can benefit as well from the proposed framework with only minor modifications. Finally, it is TTT's hope and desire that this vision provides the strategic guidance to both public and private research and development decision makers to make the proposed 2040 vision state a reality and thereby provide a significant advancement in the United States global competitiveness.

PAX Mobility

Pax Mobility is a Wicked Wild Discovery activity under the Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) project. It is intended to cut down the end-to-end travel time and friction for people and goods (referred to as passengers) through: (1) A passenger-oriented paradigm to enable faster mobility that is accessible by all people, end to end (rather than port to port), and that is also safer, more efficient, and sustainable. (2) A total mobility paradigm that integrates modes of mobility to achieve end-to-end passenger objectives. (3) Digital transformation that establishes an agile research and development process to reduce the time to reach end-to-end mobility solutions.

A doubly averaging method for third body perturbations in planet equator coordinates

The first order doubly averaged potential due to third-body gravity is derived in any arbitrary coordinates. The equations of motion are nonsingular at zero eccentricity. The derivation uses a recursive method which allows easy expansion to higher order terms. Instead of using analytical quadrature to obtain the doubly averaged potential, the method presented in this paper simply eliminates the mean anomaly of the perturbed and perturbing bodies by inspection of the recursive formulation. The derivatives of the orbital elements can be numerically integrated rapidly. When a planet equator coordinate system is used, they can be added directly to the derivatives due to gravity harmonics without any coordinate transformation. The method is applied to various high altitude missions. The results are compared with a high precision numerical integration method and are found to provide excellent agreement.

Tactical Analysis for Calculating Contextual Risk at Boundaries: Summary of Laboratory Directed Research & Development Effort

The Tactical Analysis for Calculating Contextual Risk at Boundaries (TACCRAB) tool is an innovative digital twin (DT) platform and automated risk algorithm designed to transform operational decision-making in structured screening environments, with an initial focus on Southern Border Land Ports of Entry (POEs). The invention provides integration points for advanced artificial intelligence, predictive modeling, and real-time data analysis to produce a comprehensive risk management tool that enables proactive, data-informed security strategies. The core inventive features of TACCRAB center on its unique risk algorithm, which dynamically calculates contextual risk by synthesizing historical data, near real-time streaming data from the checkpoints themselves, and AI-generated predictions. Unlike traditional risk assessment methods, TACCRAB utilizes a DT to provide comprehensive operational insights, allowing stakeholders to visualize, simulate, and optimize checkpoint configurations with unprecedented speed and contextual awareness. TACCRAB's key innovation lies in its ability to combine multiple complex inputs - including technology detection probabilities, resource availability, screening pathway characteristics, and threat actor behavioral patterns - into a unified risk calculation and update these inputs based on changing operational and environmental conditions. By leveraging a DT that continuously updates and learns from linked data, TACCRAB can suggest adaptive mitigation strategies that minimize risk while maintaining operational efficiency. Particularly novel is the platform's approach to decision support, which goes beyond static risk assessment. The DT provides dynamic metrics such as wait times, resource allocation effectiveness, and potential emerging threat scenarios, enabling users to view sophisticated, relevant what-if simulations and optimize checkpoint operations in near real-time. The system's architecture allows for generalized application across different screening environments, such as secure facilities, ports of entry, and soft targets, making it a versatile tool for security and operational management. The invention distinguishes itself through its comprehensive integration of predictive modeling, AI-driven pattern discovery, and user-friendly interface design. By combining these elements, TACCRAB transforms complex risk data into actionable insights, supporting decision-makers at various organizational levels - from booth agents making split-second screening decisions to checkpoint managers optimizing the day's resource allocation to strategic planners managing long-term investments.

New Era Towards Autonomous Additive Manufacturing: A Review of Recent Trends and Future Perspectives

Abstract The Additive Manufacturing (AM) landscape has significantly transformed in alignment with Industry 4.0 principles, primarily driven by the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Twin (DT). However, current Intelligent Additive Manufacturing (IAM) systems face limitations such as fragmented AI tool usage and suboptimal human-machine interaction (HMI). This paper reviews existing IAM solutions, emphasizing control, monitoring, process autonomy, and end-to-end integration, and identifies key limitations, such as the absence of a high-level controller for global decision-making. To address these gaps, we propose a transition from IAM to Autonomous Additive Manufacturing (AAM), featuring a hierarchical framework with four integrated layers: knowledge, generative solution, operational, and cognitive. In the cognitive layer, AI agents notably enable machines to independently observe, analyze, plan, and execute operations that traditionally require human intervention. These capabilities streamline production processes and expand the possibilities for innovation, particularly in sectors like in-space manufacturing (ISM). Additionally, this paper discusses the role of AI in self-optimization and lifelong learning, positing that the future of AM will be characterized by a symbiotic relationship between human expertise and advanced autonomy, fostering a more adaptive, resilient manufacturing ecosystem.

LLM Generation of Online Courses from a Curated Set of Documents in the Nuclear Safeguards Domain

A multidisciplinary team at Argonne National Laboratory explores the application of advanced technologies to enhance knowledge transfer and retention within the nuclear safeguards domain. Specifically, it examines the feasibility of leveraging secure large language models (LLMs) to streamline the creation of e-learning modules for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Office of International Nuclear Safeguards (NA-241). The initiative addresses the critical need for preserving institutional memory and accelerating skill development amidst the imminent retirement of senior professionals in the field in addition to supporting good knowledge management practices. The project integrates instructional design theory with cutting-edge AI technologies to transform curated document sets from the Safeguards Knowledge Repository (SKR) into modular online courses. By automating the generation of learning objectives and instructional content, the effort aims to reduce manual effort while maintaining high-quality educational outcomes. A limited measure of human supervision, however, ensures accuracy, relevance, and alignment with NNSA’s strategic priorities. Key findings highlight the potential of AI-assisted course generation to support safeguards professionals by creating structured, interactive learning experiences. The report underscores the importance of SME validation to address limitations in AI-generated content, such as terminology errors and gaps in coverage. Recommendations include adopting a structured workflow combining LLM acceleration with expert oversight to ensure accuracy, usability, and alignment with learner needs. This work demonstrates Argonne’s commitment to advancing national security and scientific excellence through innovative knowledge management solutions.

Insulated electrocardiographic electrodes

An integrated system is disclosed including an insulated electrode and an impedance transformer which can be assembled in a small plastic housing and used for the acquisition of electrocardiographic data. The electrode may be employed without a paste electrolyte and may be attached to the body for extended usage without producing skin reaction. The electrode comprises a thin layer of suitable nontoxic dielectric material preferably deposited by radio frequency sputtering onto a conductive substrate. The impedance transformer preferably comprises an operational amplifier having an FET input stage connected in the unity gain configuration which provides a very low lower cut-off frequency, a high input impedance with a very small input bias current, a low output impedance, and a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Doppler lidar processing for atmospheric turbulence measurements

A Doppler lidar is described, its processing methods are characterized, and two alternate techniques are considered. The described system uses a CO2 laser transmitting at 10.6 microns and a bank of narrow band filters for the spectrum analysis. Typical results obtained with this system are presented. The two alternate techniques involve computation of the discrete spectrum by use of the discrete Fourier transform. The first technique involves single-pulse processing and incoherent integration, while the second technique performs coherent processing on the train of received pulses.

An equivalent source model of the satellite-altitude magnetic anomaly field over Australia

The low-amplitude, long-wavelength magnetic anomaly field measured between 400 and 700 km elevation over Australia by the POGO satellites is modeled by means of the equivalent source technique. Magnetic dipole moments are computed for a latitude-longitude array of dipole sources on the earth's surface such that the dipoles collectively give rise to a field which makes a least squares best fit to that observed. The distribution of magnetic moments is converted to a model of apparent magnetization contrast in a layer of constant (40 km) thickness, which contains information equivalent to the lateral variation in the vertical integral of magnetization down to the Curie isotherm and can be transformed to a model of variable thickness magnetization. It is noted that the closest equivalent source spacing giving a stable solution is about 2.5 deg, corresponding to about half the mean data elevation, and that the magnetization distribution correlates well with some of the principle tectonic elements of Australia.

Executive and communications services to support the IPAD environment

The principal purposes of the prototype executive software are to provide a system independent interface to the underlying host system and to allow for extension to full IPAD executive services as described in the preliminary design. A basic set of functions is included in the prototype to meet the requirements of the other components of the prototype, principally IPID, the IPAD data management system. The functions were chosen so that they would be readily built on any of the proposed host systems with minimal redesign and execution overhead. The functions fall into five categories: access to host data, access to data files, access to communication services, data transformation, and instrumentation for performance measurement. Communication services provide message delivery between processes in a network of heterogeneous computers. Data transformation services and communication services ensure data type validity and data integrity of messages exchanged between processes.

Errors in fixed and moving frame of references - Applications for conventional and Doppler radar analysis

Techniques for the correction of errors in Doppler radar scans due to advection effects are presented. A moving frame of reference is shown to be useful in least-squares estimates with stationary observations expressed in scalars or Cartesian coordinates. For non-Cartesian coordinates, such as the deduction of radial velocities from triple Doppler radar data, an integral is defined for accounting for advection effects and consequent coordinate transformations. The multiple radars are necessary for unambiguous characterization of the horizontal wind velocity. A scale analysis is employed to estimate errors with and without the error correction procedure. Improvements in correlations between scans are demonstrated when the error correction method is used.

Manipulator interactive design with interconnected flexible elements

This paper describes the development of an analysis tool for the interactive design of control systems for manipulators and similar electro-mechanical systems amenable to representation as structures in a topological chain. The chain consists of a series of elastic bodies subject to small deformations and arbitrary displacements. The bodies are connected by hinges which permit kinematic constraints, control, or relative motion with six degrees of freedom. The equations of motion for the chain configuration are derived via Kane's method, extended for application to interconnected flexible bodies with time-varying boundary conditions. A corresponding set of modal coordinates has been selected. The motion equations are imbedded within a simulation that transforms the vector-dyadic equations into scalar form for numerical integration. The simulation also includes a linear, time-invariant controler specified in transfer function format and a set of sensors and actuators that interface between the structure and controller. The simulation is driven by an interactive set-up program resulting in an easy-to-use analysis tool.

Collins' solution to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind is discussed. This equation is transformed into an infinite set of linear equations from which the coefficients in the dual series equation can be calculated using standard techniques.

Impedance properties of circular microstrip antenna

A moment method solution to the input impedance of a circular microstrip antenna excited by either a microstrip feed or a coaxial probe is presented. Using the exact dyadic Green's function and the Fourier transform the problem is formulated in terms of Richmond's reaction integral equation from which the unknown patch current can be solved for. The patch current is expanded in terms of regular surface patch modes and an attachment mode (for probe excited case) which insures continuity of the current at probe/patch junction, proper polarization and p-dependance of patch current in the vicinity of the probe. The input impedance of a circular microstrip antenna is computed and compared with earlier results. Effect of attachment mode on the input impedance is also discussed.
