Detection of interstellar recombination lines from emitters of intermediate mass.

The 18-cm microwave spectra of Orion B and W3A show evidence of an emission feature to the high-frequency side of the carbon recombination line. Observations at different frequencies establish that this feature results from electronic recombination. In addition, theoretical considerations, results of 21-cm observations, and computer-simulated spectra suggest that the new feature originates in a predominantly neutral hydrogen region and can be explained by a superposition of recombination lines from any or all of the following elements: Mg-24, Si-28, S-32, and Fe-56.

Thermal conductivity of Apollo 12 fines at intermediate density.

The thermal conductivity of an Apollo 12 fines sample (12001,19) was measured under vacuum conditions over a temperature range of 200 to 400 K for a density of 1640 kg/cu m. It was found to vary from approximately .0012 to about .0026 W/m-K. A least-squares curve was found to represent the data satisfactorily.

Measurements of electron-bremsstrahlung coincidence rates at intermediate electron energies

Coincidence rates have been measured for inelastically scattered electrons and their associated bremsstrahlung for bombarding energies of 0.20 and 0.15 MeV. Measurements were made for an electron angle of 45 deg and a photon angle of 20 deg. Inelastic electron energies of 0.15 and 0.16 MeV were considered for an incident energy of 0.2 MeV and an inelastic electron energy of 0.12 MeV was considered for an incident energy of 0.15 MeV. To observe the trend with atomic number, Al and Au targets were used. The experimental cross section differentials in photon and electron angles and energy were found to be smaller than the predictions of the Bethe-Heitler theory.

S-band radio occultation measurements of the atmosphere and topography of Mars with Mariner 9: Extended mission coverage of polar and intermediate latitudes

Radio occultation measurements from Mariner 9 orbits around Mars show that the radius of Mars changes by only about 2 km from a latitude of 65 deg to the north pole, that the north polar area is about average in elevation, and that polar temperature profiles are indicative of the possibility that the remnant north polar cap may be at least partially composed of water ice. It is also found that Mars, in addition to being asymmetrical equatorially, is also significantly asymmetrical in the north and south direction with the Southern Hemisphere lying 3 to 4 km higher. Temperature gradients in the clear Martian atmosphere of only about one-half of the adiabatic gradients of 5 deg K/km suggest the importance of dynamical processes.

Intermediate energy nucleon-deuteron scattering theory.

Sloan's conclusion (1969) that terms of the multiple-scattering series beyond single scattering contribute only to S- and P-wave amplitudes in an S-wave separable model is examined. A comparison of experiments with the calculation at 146 MeV shows that the conclusion is valid in nucleon-deuteron scattering applications.

Glycolytic intermediates and adenosine phosphates in rat liver at high altitude /3,800 m/.

Liver tissue obtained from adult rats exposed to 3800 m altitude for intervals ranging from 1.5 hr to 63 days was examined by enzymatic analysis. During the first 3 hr of exposure, an immediate decrease in rephosphorylation of high-energy phosphates led to reduced glycogenesis and eventual pileup of AMP, pyruvate, fructose 1,6-diphosphate, glucose 6-phosphate, and glucose. This was accompanied by a reduction of pentose phosphate pathway activity. After 3 to 6 hr, a secondary adjustment of substrate concentrations occurred along with the apparent facilitation of phosphofructokinase. This secondary adjustment appears to increase anaerobic production of ATP and represents a significant intracellular contribution to the acclimatization process at high altitude.

Resonant oscillations of intermediate frequency in a stratified atmosphere.

A class of solutions to a model of forced oscillations in a rotating stratified atmospheric layer is derived and analyzed. The basic model is found to reduce to a boundary value problem with a second-order linear partial differential equation of the hyperbolic type for this range of forcing frequencies. The forced solutions are shown to exhibit resonances with the normal modes of oscillation of the layer. The characteristics of the resonant modes are analyzed in terms of mean tropospheric values of temperature, temperature lapse, wind speed, horizontal and vertical wind shears, latitude, and the frequency and horizontal wavelength of the forcing mechanism. These solutions are compared with solutions to the model for a different (subinertial) range of forcing frequencies. This comparison leads to an elliptic boundary value problem. The solutions in that case do not exhibit the same type of resonance and generally decay away from the region of forcing.

Intermediate energy proton-deuteron elastic scattering

A fully symmetrized multiple scattering series is considered for the description of proton-deuteron elastic scattering. An off-shell continuation of the experimentally known twobody amplitudes that retains the exchange symmeteries required for the calculation is presented. The one boson exchange terms of the two body amplitudes are evaluated exactly in this off-shell prescription. The first two terms of the multiple scattering series are calculated explicitly whereas multiple scattering effects are obtained as minimum variance estimates from the 146-MeV data of Postma and Wilson. The multiple scattering corrections indeed consist of low order partial waves as suggested by Sloan based on model studies with separable interactions. The Hamada-Johnston wave function is shown consistent with the data for internucleon distances greater than about 0.84 fm.

Changes in sulfhydryl groups of honeybee glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase associated with generation of the intermediate plateau in its saturation kinetics

Honeybee and rabbit muscle GPDH were studied to obtain information at the chemical level regarding anomolous saturation kinetics of the honeybee enzyme. Results demonstrate that the enzyme's sulfhydryl groups are implicated in the process. Measured by DTNB titration, native honeybee GPDH has one less active SH than the native rabbit muscle enzyme and displays changes in overall sulfhydryl reactivity after preincubation with G-3-P or G-3-P plus NAD+. The total DTNB reactive sulfhydryls of rabbit muscle GPDH are not changed by preincubation with NAD+ or G-3-P; honeybee GPDH, under certain conductions of preincubation with these ligands, shows a decrease of two total DTNB reactive SH groups. This difference has been confirmed by an independent experiment in which the two enzymes were carboxymethylated with C-14 bromoacetic acid.

Intermediate memory devices

Several methods of transfer and processing of data whose practical implementation requires operational memory devices are described. Devices incorporating multistable elements are proposed and their main parameters are given. The possibility of using the proposed devices for storing information for transmission in space radio communications channels is examined.

Deformation characteristics and time-dependent notch sensitivity of Udimet 700 at intermediate temperatures

Time dependent notch sensitivity was observed in Udimet 700 sheet, bar, and investment castings between 1000 and 1400 F (538 -760 C), but not at 1600 F (871 C). As was the case for modified Waspaloy, Waspaloy and Inconel 718, it occurred in notched specimens loaded below the yield strength when the creep deformation was localized. For each alloy and notched specimen geometry, a stress-average particle size zone can be defined that characterizes the notch sensitive behavior.

Mars - The intermediate between earth and moon

The present work represents a summary of the state of our knowledge concerning the chief physical characteristics of Mars as deduced from existing observational and theoretical evidence. Two main geological provinces are distinguished on Mars: areas of rough terrain and dense cratering, and smooth areas comparable to lunar maria. A thermal model for the Martian poles which takes into account convective transport would indicate that the CO2 frost over the north pole is not permanent, lasting about 420 days with the water frost lasting the remaining 267 days of the Martian year. The meandering appearance of Martian rift valleys are cracks probably produced, as also in the case of lunar rilles, by stresses, perhaps in solidifying lava of impact origin, and not by erosional river beds. Data indicate a strong absorption in the thin Martian atmosphere. The atmospheric blue and violet cap around a Martian pole in winter is interpreted as a 'blue clearing' of the atmosphere increasing transparency so that surface detail of higher albedo shines through in the blue.

Evidence for an episode of crater obliteration intermediate in Martian history

It is shown that Mars experienced a brief episode of an increased obliteration rate contemporaneous with the formation of the cratered plains units. The obliteration rate during this episode was at least an order of magnitude greater than the preexisting rate. The obliteration rates prior to and after the event were identical within a factor of 3. Regional variations in the observed densities of degraded craters on the cratered terrain are shown to result from differences in the intensity of the obliteration rate during the event. The identification and characterization of the event are accomplished by using crater diameter-frequency distributions, not only for the total crater population but also for four morphological classes. Distributions are selected from 38 regions within the Martian equatorial latitudes.

Intermediate term frequency measurements with the HP computing counter in the USNO clock time system

High precision frequency measurements with various integration times can be made with conventional counters by using variable gate times. The Hewlett-Packard (HP) computing counter allows such measurements over a wide range of frequencies and measurement times. This instrument can also convert period measurements into frequency by means of its arithmetic capabilities: The program library contains programs to facilitate frequency stability measurements in the most direct and convenient way. This method was used as the basis for all time scale computations, until requirements for highest resolution justified the development of an automatic data acquisition system. The phase measurements are now being made with the HP computing counter (with time interval plug-in unit) under program control from the HP System Programmer.
