Knowledge Management: FY22 Los Alamos National Laboratory Hydrothermal Lab for Spent Fuel Campaign R&D

The use of Engineered Barrier Systems (EBS) for spent nuclear fuel disposal is being investigated by the U.S. Department of Energy as a part of the Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition (SFWD) Campaign. Such dry spent fuel canisters would be loaded with fuel bundles, and then transported and stored at a nuclear waste repository. Once the canisters are in place underground, the space between the canister and the wall rock will be filled with bentonite clay. Recent research has prioritized high temperature interactions of EBS materials, including phase transitions in bentonite clay, in order to reduce worker dose and repository cost. Higher temperature (i.e., 200ºC) thermal limits are a new area of investigation by the U.S. and international repository science programs. The hydrothermal experimental laboratory at Los Alamos, consisting of rocking autoclaves and cold seal assemblies, is critical to the campaign and presents a significant temperature / pressure safety hazard. Therefore, working competently and safely with these systems is very important to the knowledge management procedures developed at this laboratory. Therefore, the operation of these two systems (rocking autoclaves and cold seal assemblies) will be discussed first.

Witness from the sky: How the Lab photographed fireballs from above

In the spring of 1948, a workforce of more than 10,000 converged on three islands of the Pacific Proving Grounds. Among them, lines of men hauled hundreds of pounds of state-of-the-art photographic equipment onto an array of aircraft. A series of nuclear tests – called Operation Sandstone – would take place and they were going to capture it from the sky.

A Partnership between countries that endures today. The British Mission was a part of the Lab from 1943-1945

After 27 months of grueling hours and scientific secrecy amidst the pressure of a mounting death toll and Nazi Germany's own weapons development, it had come to an end. It was time to celebrate. On September 22, 1945, scientists, engineers and their families gathered at Fuller Lodge downtown to celebrate the success of the Los Alamos atomic bomb and the end of World War II. The party was hosted by members of the British Mission and their wives and included food, dancing and a satirical play based on the lighter moments of wartime life in Los Alamos. However, this party was more than just entertainment and a night of festivities, it also represented a partnership between countries that endures today.

Senior Historian Alan Carr presents Lab-wide talk on testing-Nation’s last weapons test marks 30th anniversary

Join Senior Historian Alan Carr as he presents “Introduction to Nuclear Weapons Testing, 1945 to 1992” in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the nation’s last full-scale nuclear test. Special guest retired Los Alamos test director Ron Cosimi will offer the opening remarks. Attendees will receive an original commemorative poster and can browse a new, temporary Divider test display.

Re-establishment of Sandia National Labs super-critical carbon dioxide testing autoclave capability for exposure of metal alloys and polymers (Level 4 Milestone Report)

The sCO 2 system located in 916/160A, Sandia National Laboratories, CA, was constructed in 2014, for testing of materials in the presence of supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) at high pressures (up to 3500 psi) and temperatures (up to 650°C). The basic design of the system consists of a thermally insulated IN625 autoclave, a high-pressure supercritical CO 2 compressor, autoclave heaters, temperature controllers, gas manifold, and temperature and pressure diagnostics. This system was modified in 2016 (sCO 2 compressor was removed) to enable corrosion studies with metal alloys in gaseous CO 2 at lower pressure (up to 300 psi) at 500°C. The capability was not used much afterwards until 2020, when preliminary tests using this capability (again without the supercritical CO 2 compressor) involved the exposure of fatigue and tensile specimens of HN 230 and 800H alloys to CO 2 gas for 168 hours in gaseous CO 2 . Using this capability, we finished experiments with low pressure (450 psi/ 3 MPa), high temperature (650°C) exposure of fatigue and tensile specimens of HN 230 and 800H alloys to CO 2 gas for 168 hours. The data from these experiments will be compared to that gathered from experiments performed in 2020 using the tube furnace and presented in a future report. It is to be noted that the tube furnace experiments ran 500-1500 hours, unlike the 168 hours of exposure in the recent experiment. This can help validate the use of the sCO 2 autoclave for both CO 2 and sCO 2 experiments.

Neurotrophic Labs - Fish Exclusion Using a Floating Separator - Fish Protection Prize (Final Report)

In FY2020, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) initiated a Prize competition with support from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office (DOE WPTO), to support the development of innovative methods for excluding fish from water diversions and intakes: the Fish Protection Prize. Proposed solutions can include new ideas for addressing fish exclusion or improvements to existing technologies. Solutions can be applied to river and canal diversions, unscreened diversion pipes, or intakes at dams. In FY20 PNNL provided voucher support in the form of technical reviews and support, as well as graphics and presentation support, in helping the 9 finalists prepare for the Pitch Contest at the American Fisheries Society (AFS) virtual meeting. There were no subject inventions, patent applications, copyrights, and trademarks under this CRADA. The report herein provides an abstract of the presentation that the finalist presented at the American Fisheries Society virtual meeting in September 2020.

MIRACL Co-Simulation Platform Lab assets and tools integration

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's (PNNL) co-simulation platform (CSP) for the Microgrids, Infrastructure Resilience, and Advanced Controls Launchpad (MIRACL) project, also known as MIRACL-CSP, is a functional layer designed and developed to oversee the operational exchanges of data at the application level to and from different resources residing on the MIRACL Data Hub shared platform. MIRACL-CSP allows virtual interactions between various data hub resources during co-simulation runtime.
