Observation-constrained kinetic modeling of isoprene SOA formation in the atmosphere

Isoprene has the largest global non-methane hydrocarbon emission, and the oxidation of isoprene plays a crucial role in the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Two primary processes are known to contribute to SOA formation from isoprene oxidation: (1) the reactive uptake of isoprene-derived epoxides on acidic or aqueous particle surfaces and (2) the absorptive gas–particle partitioning of low-volatility oxidation products. In this study, we developed a new multiphase condensed isoprene oxidation mechanism that includes these processes with key molecular intermediates and products. The new mechanism was applied to simulate isoprene gas-phase oxidation products and SOA formation from previously published chamber experiments under a variety of conditions and atmospheric observations during the Southern Oxidant and Aerosol Studies (SOAS) field campaign. Our results show that SOA formation from most of the chamber experiments is reasonably reproduced using our mechanism, except when the concentration ratios of initial nitric oxide to isoprene exceed ~ 2, the formed SOA is significantly underpredicted. The SOAS simulations also reasonably agree with the measurements regarding the diurnal pattern and concentrations of different product categories, while the total isoprene SOA remains underestimated. The molecular compositions of the modeled SOA indicate that multifunctional low-volatility products contribute to isoprene SOA more significantly than previously thought, with a median mass contribution of ~ 57 % to the total modeled isoprene SOA. However, this contribution is intricately intertwined with IEPOX-derived SOA (IEPOX: isoprene-derived epoxydiols), posing challenges for their differentiation using bulk aerosol composition analysis (e.g., the aerosol mass spectrometer with positive matrix factorization). Furthermore, the SOA from these pathways may vary greatly, mainly dependent on the volatility estimation and treatment of particle-phase processes (i.e., photolysis and hydrolysis). Our findings emphasize that the various pathways to produce these low-volatility species should be considered in models to more accurately predict isoprene SOA formation. The new condensed isoprene chemical mechanism can be further incorporated into regional-scale air quality models, such as the Community Multiscale Air Quality Modelling System (CMAQ), to assess isoprene SOA formation on a larger scale.

Measurement technique for the determination of antenna directivity

Measurement of great circle patterns requires rotation in azimuth with discrete rotation in elevation. This technique eliminates a set of slip-rings and rotary joints and permits the use of larger models since only continuous azimuth rotation is required.

Fatigue crack tip deformation and fatigue crack propagation

The effects of stress ratio, prestress cycling and plate thickness on the fatigue crack propagation rate are studied on 2024-T351 aluminum alloy. Fatigue crack propagation rate increases with the plate thickness and the stress ratio. Prestress cycling below the static yield strength has no noticeable effect on the fatigue crack propagation rate. However, prestress cycling above the static yield strength causes the material to strain harden and increases the fatigue crack propagation rate. Crack tip deformation is used to study the fatigue crack propagation. The crack tip strains and the crack opening displacements were measured from moire fringe patterns. The moire fringe patterns were obtained by a double exposure technique, using a very high density master grille (13,400 lines per inch).

An integral equation formulation for predicting radiation patterns of a space shuttle annular slot antenna

An integral equation formulation is applied to predict pitch- and roll-plane radiation patterns of a thin VHF/UHF (very high frequency/ultra high frequency) annular slot communications antenna operating at several locations in the nose region of the space shuttle orbiter. Digital computer programs used to compute radiation patterns are given and the use of the programs is illustrated. Experimental verification of computed patterns is given from measurements made on 1/35-scale models of the orbiter.

Electronic damping of mechanical vibrations

The conditions required for measuring and recording the patterns of vibration of a process are discussed. It is stated that the frequency of the process being investigated must be an order of magnitude lower than the natural frequency of the sensitive receiving element for sufficient accuracy. The elastic element must damp so the frequency range of the vibrational patterns being investigated can be expanded. This is especially true of the tensile stresses of a moving signal carrier. A method is proposed for damping mechanical vibrations of elastic sensitive elements with semiconductor strain gages, based on electronic compensation of the natural vibrations. A schematic diagram is provided to show the conditions.

Thermospheric composition

The global view of the atmosphere provided by satellite observations and radar backscatter measurements has shown a pattern of composition variability resulting largely from dynamic processes. Important progress has been made in defining composition variability at 120 km, which has greatly improved models which previously had fixed boundary conditions at that altitude. The discovery of the early morning maximum in helium abundance and the better definition of diurnal variation in relative composition have provided a basis for more sophisticated dynamical models. Similarly, models of meridional wind systems have been developed which can account for the better-defined winter enhancements in helium and atomic oxygen. Finally, composition variability has indicated the presence of a high-latitude heat source which during periods of magnetic activity profoundly modifies the state of the atmosphere.

Effect of steady flight loads on JT9D-7 performance deterioration

Short term engine deterioration occurs in less than 250 flights on a new engine and in the first flights following engine repair; while long term deterioration involves primarily hot section distress and compression system losses which occur at a somewhat slower rate. The causes for short-term deterioration are associated with clearance changes which occur in the flight environment. Analytical techniques utilized to examine the effects of flight loads and engine operating conditions on performance deterioration are presented. The role of gyroscopic, gravitational, and aerodynamic loads are discussed along with the effect of variations in engine build clearances. These analytical results are compared to engine test data along with the correlation between analytically predicted and measured clearances and rub patterns. Planetary-type rare gases in an upper mantle-derived amphibole

All 23 stable rare gas isotopes in a mantle-derived aluminous Ti-rich amphibole, kaersutite, were measured, and the abundance pattern indicated by the results is similar to the 'planetary' rare gas pattern of carbonaceous chondrites. The He-3/He-4 ratio of (4.9 + or - 0.6) times 10 to the -5th power is anomalously high. Ne-21 is enriched relative to the abundance of the other two neon isotopes in the atmosphere, while the heavy isotopes of Kr and the Xe isotopes are within error of the atmospheric values. The analytical procedure is described. It is concluded that part of the primordial rare gases of the earth are still present in some parts of the upper mantle and that these gases retain a faithful record of the 'planetary' primordial rare gas elemental signature.

Analysis of SIR-A antenna tests

The purpose of this report is: (1) to provide an analysis of antenna test procedures used at JPL for measurement of the SIR-A antenna and (2) to point out that the measured E-plane patterns differ in some significant respects from the true pattern as experienced during the OFT-2 space deployment; this results principally from the finite range length associated with the JPL far-field range.

The Orbiting Standards Platform

The Orbiting Standards Platform (OSP) is a combination satellite signal source and field strength meter which will make possible highly accurate, truly far-field measurements of large aperture antenna gain, pattern, sidelobes, and polarization as well as system G/T and EIRP. These measurements may be used to initially characterize earth station equipment and for the subsequent monitoring of its performance. This paper describes a technical-feasibility study of the OSP.

The distribution and annual cycle of ozone in the upper stratosphere

Study of the global distribution of upper stratospheric ozone derived from backscatter ultraviolet (BUV/SBUV) instruments on the Nimbus 4 and 7 satellites reveals the following characteristics for the period June 1970 May 1972 plus portions of 1978 and 1979. At pressures less than 5 mbar a local midlatitude maximum in the ozone mixing ratio develops in autumn and persists through the winter season in both hemispheres. However, by a pressure of 10 mbar the seasonal trend has reversed, with midlatitude summer values exceeding those in winter. The largest ozone mixing ratios in a global sense occur at tropical latitudes between pressures of 7 and 9 mbar. The general character of this pattern repeats from year to year, although differences in detail exist, especially in winter. This interannual variability in ozone increases the difficulty in extracting small long-term trends from the available data base. The overall seasonal pattern revealed by the measurements is in accord with photochemical model predictions which include the annual variation in temperature and solar illumination.
