Interactive image processing for meteorological applications at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center

The meteorological data processing program at the space center is centered on the analysis of geostationary satellite data. Its objectives are to detect and predict severe storms, to improve short range and long range global numerical weather forecasting models, and to develop improved satellite systems. The Image Display and Manipulation System (IDAMS) for earth resources satellite data processing is described, as is the special purpose software package, METPAK, for performing meteorology operations on IDAMS. The Atmospheric and Oceanographic Information Processing System (AOIPS), a dual terminal multiprocessor is also described.

Searches for correlated X-ray and radio emission from X-ray burst sources

The NRAO Green Bank interferometer has been used to monitor MXB 1730-335 and MXB 1837+05 during periods when 68 X-ray bursts were detected by X-ray observations. No significant radio emission was detected from these objects, or from MXB 1820-30 and MXB 1906+00, which emitted no bursts throughout the simultaneous observations. The data place upper limits on radio emission from these objects in the 2695 and 8085 MHz bands.

Preliminary investigation of motion requirements for the simulation of helicopter hover tasks

Data from a preliminary experiment are presented which attempted to define a helicopter hover task that would allow the detection of objectively-measured differences in fixed base/moving base simulator performance. The addition of heave, pitch, and roll movement of a ship at sea to the hover task, by means of an adaption of a simulator g-seat, potentially fulfills the desired definition. The feasibility of g-seat substitution for platform motion can be investigated utilizing this task.

Five-color band ultraviolet photometry of fourteen close binaries

Photometric observations obtained with the Astronomical Netherlands Satellite in five ultraviolet wavelength regions for 14 close binaries are presented. Strong excess far-ultraviolet flux is detected in four objects. The binaries TT Hya, RX Cas, and SX Cas exhibit a pronounced excess of far-ultraviolet flux, which is thought to be the result of mass transfer phenomena in these systems. Observations of the binary R Ara show very peculair variations; its far ultraviolet flux at 1550 A brightened by 0.4 mag between phases 0.7 and 0.8, while its near ultraviolet flux at 3300 A decreased by 0.5 mag over this same half-day interval. The A0 II-III component in the system RZ Sct is seen to dominate the ultraviolet spectrum.

Closed loop electrostatic levitation system

An electrostatic levitation system is described, which can closely control the position of objects of appreciable size. A plurality of electrodes surround the desired position of an electrostatically charged object, the position of the objects is monitored, and the voltages applied to the electrodes are varied to hold the object at a desired position. In one system, the object is suspended above a plate-like electrode which has a concave upper face to urge the object toward the vertical axis of the curved plate. An upper electrode that is also curved can be positioned above the object, to assure curvature of the field at any height above the lower plate. In another system, four spherical electrodes are positioned at the points of a tetrahedron, and the voltages applied to the electrodes are varied in accordance with the object position as detected by two sensors.

Space station automation and robotics study. Operator-systems interface

This is the final report of a Space Station Automation and Robotics Planning Study, which was a joint project of the Boeing Aerospace Company, Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, and Boeing Computer Services Company. The study is in support of the Advanced Technology Advisory Committee established by NASA in accordance with a mandate by the U.S. Congress. Boeing support complements that provided to the NASA Contractor study team by four aerospace contractors, the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), and the California Space Institute. This study identifies automation and robotics (A&R) technologies that can be advanced by requirements levied by the Space Station Program. The methodology used in the study is to establish functional requirements for the operator system interface (OSI), establish the technologies needed to meet these requirements, and to forecast the availability of these technologies. The OSI would perform path planning, tracking and control, object recognition, fault detection and correction, and plan modifications in connection with extravehicular (EV) robot operations.

Observations of potential ultra high energy gamma-ray sources above 10(15) eV

The Haverah Park 50 m water-Cerenkov array has been used to examine a number of periodic sources for ultra high energy gamma-ray emission above 10 to the 15th power eV. The data, recorded between 1 Jan. 1979 and 31 Dec. 1984, feature a modest angular resolution of approx 3 deg with millisecond arrival time resolution post 1982. The sources investigated include the Crab pulsar, Her X-1, Au0115 + 63 and Geminga. All objects have been detected by workers in the TeV region, with varying degrees of confidence.

Stochastic response analysis, order reduction, and output feedback controllers for flexible spacecraft

Real disturbances and real sensors have finite bandwidths. The first objective of this paper is to incorporate this finiteness in the 'open-loop modal cost analysis' as applied to a flexible spacecraft. Analysis based on residue calculus shows that among other factors, significance of a mode depends on the power spectral density of disturbances and the response spectral density of sensors at the modal frequency. The second objective of this article is to compare performances of an optimal and a suboptimal output feedback controller, the latter based on 'minimum error excitation' of Kosut. Both the performances are found to be nearly the same, leading us to favor the latter technique because it entails only linear computations. Our final objective is to detect an instability due to truncated modes by representing them as a multiplicative and an additive perturbation in a nominal transfer function. In an example problem it is found that this procedure leads to a narrow range of permissible controller gains, and that it labels a wrong mode as a cause of instability. A free beam is used to illustrate the analysis in this work.

Microwave Power From Natural Emitters

Signal-to-noise ratio of radiometer system calculated. Publication from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory presents calculations of power radiated from natural emitter on Earth to microwave collecting aperture on aircraft or spacecraft. Analysis develops power-transfer criteria for detection of emitting object by collecting aperture (that is, by antenna and its receiver). Resulting formulas used in design of radiometer systems.

A study of the discrepant QSO X-ray luminosity function from the HEAO-2 data archive

Sensitive X-ray information for approximately 90 previously uncataloged Quasi-Stellar Objects (QSOs) in the redshift range 1.8 is less than or equal to z which is less than or equal to 3. Even with the longest esixting Einstein Observatory X-ray exposures, only 25% of these objects are positively detected in X-rays. The data were used to investigate the ensemble X-ray properties of high redshift QSOs, and the QSO population in general.

CCD scanning for asteroids and comets

A change coupled device (CCD) is used in a scanning mode to find new asteroids and recover known asteroids and comet nuclei. Current scientific programs include recovery of asteroids and comet nuclei requested by the Minor Planet Center (MPC), discovery of new asteroids in the main belt and of unusual orbital types, and follow-up astrometry of selected new asteroids discovered. The routine six sigma limiting visual magnitude is 19.6 and slightly more than a square degree is scanned three times every 90 minutes of observing time during the fortnight centered on New Moon. Semiautomatic software for detection of moving objects is in routine use; angular speeds as low as 11.0 arcseconds per hour were distinguished from the effects of the Earth's atmosphere on the field of view. A typical set of three 29-minute scans near the opposition point along the ecliptic typically nets at least 5 new main-belt asteroids down to magnitude 19.6. In 18 observing runs (months) 43 asteroids were recovered, astrometric and photometric data on 59 new asteroids were reported, 10 new asteroids with orbital elements were consolidated, and photometry and positions of 22 comets were reported.

Infrared spectra of WC10 planetary nebulae nuclei

The 5.2 to 8.0 micron spectra are presented for two planetary nebulae nuclei Hen1044 (He2-113) and CPD-56 8032. The unidentified infrared (UIR) emission bands at 6.2 microns, 6.9 microns, 7.7 microns are present in the spectra of Hen1044 and in CPD-56 8032, and the 8.6 micron band is present in the long wavelength shoulder of the 7.7 micron band in the spectrum of CPD-56 8032. The 8 to 13 micron spectra of these two stars by Aitken et. al. clearly show the presence of the 8.6 micron band in He2-113 while weakly resolving this feature in the spectra of CPD-56 8032. In their spectra the 11.3 micron band is also clearly detected in both objects. The 6.2 micron and 7.7 micron bands are characteristic of the infrared active C-C stretching modes in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); the 3.3 micron, 8.6 micron, and 11.3 micron bands are respectively assigned to the in-plane stretching mode, the in-plane bending mode, and the out-of-plane bending mode of the aromatic CH bond. The weak 6.9 micron emission feature is attributed to the UIR spectrum by Bregman et. al. The IRAS LRS spectra of He2-113 (IRAS 14562-5406) and CPD-56 8032 (IRAS 17047-5650) are presented. Cohen et. al. identify the broad plateau from 11.3 to 13.0 microns in the spectrum of He2-113 with increased hydrogenation of PAHs. This broad plateau is not seen in the LRS spectrum of CPD-56 8032. Also, He2-113 has greater infrared excess emission in the 17-22 micron region than does CPD-56 8032.

Use of a scanning CCD to discriminate asteroid images moving in a field of stars

In the presently revealed use of a CCD in scanning mode to recover asteroids and comet nuclei, discover new asteroids in the main belt, and follow up the astrometry of selected new asteroids, the routine limiting visual magnitude is 19.6. Semiautomatic software for detection of moving objects is in use, allowing angular speeds as low as 11.0 arcsec/hr to be distinguished from the effects of the earth's atmosphere on the field of view. A typical set of three 29-min scans near the opposition point along the ecliptic typically nets at least five new main belt asteroids down to magnitude 19.6. In 18 monthly observing runs, 59 new asteroids have been obtained and 22 comets have been located.

Gravitational lensing by an ensemble of isothermal galaxies

Calculation of 28,000 models of gravitational lensing of a distant quasar by an ensemble of randomly placed galaxies, each having a singular isothermal mass distribuiton, is reported. The average surface mass density was 0.2 of the critical value in all models. It is found that the surface mass density averaged over the area of the smallest circle that encompasses the multiple images is 0.82, only slightly smaller than expected from a simple analytical model of Turner et al. (1984). The probability of getting multiple images is also as large as expected analytically. Gravitational lensing is dominated by the matter in the beam; i.e., by the beam convergence. The cases where the multiple imaging is due to asymmetry in mass distribution (i.e., due to shear) are very rare. Therefore, the observed gravitational-lens candidates for which no lensing object has been detected between the images cannot be a result of asymmetric mass distribution outside the images, at least in a model with randomly distributed galaxies. A surprisingly large number of large separations between the multiple images is found: up to 25 percent of multiple images have their angular separation 2 to 4 times larger than expected in a simple analytical model.

IRAS observations of radio galaxies

IRAS measurements at 25, 60, and 100 microns have been used to analyze the far-infrared properties of radio galaxies. Fifty-eight of the 131 objects surveyed were detected at the level of better than 300 mJy at 60 microns. The most powerful radio galaxies are strong emitters in the far infrared. Large infrared emission is shown to be correlated with the presence of strong emission lines in the optical spectra. The infrared colors of the strong radio galaxies are similar to those of Markarian Seyferts. The results are shown to be consistent with recent results implying that the host galaxies of radio sources are not normal giant ellipticals and that galaxy-galaxy interactions may power luminous radio sources. Finally, some similarities between powerful radio galaxies and powerful infrared galaxies are noted and briefly discussed.

Remote-Manipulator Hand With Data-Processing Ability

A "smart" hand for remote manipulator not only senses forces acting on it and detects presence of objects in immediate vicinity but also processes sensory data and controls its gripping claws. Hand reduces computational load on control computer of manipulator system. Includes wrist body and two opposing jaws with sets of claws that mesh with each other. Jaws of hand open as wide as 8.8 cm. Brushless dc motor operates claws through bevel-gear drive train and pair of ball screws. Maximum grip force 540 N, or about 120 lb.

Gravitational lensing by a smoothly variable surface mass density

The statistical properties of gravitational lensing due to smooth but nonuniform distributions of matter are considered. It is found that a majority of triple images had a parity characteristic for 'shear-induced' lensing. Almost all cases of triple or multiple imaging were associated with large surface density enhancements, and lensing objects were present between the images. Thus, the observed gravitational lens candidates for which no lensing object has been detected between the images are unlikely to be a result of asymmetric distribution of mass external to the image circle. In a model with smoothly variable surface mass density, moderately and highly amplified images tended to be single rather than multiple. An opposite trend was found in models which had singularities in the surface mass distribution.

Vision sensing techniques in aeronautics and astronautics

The close relationship between sensing and other tasks in orbital space, and the integral role of vision sensing in practical aerospace applications, are illustrated. Typical space mission-vision tasks encompass the docking of space vehicles, the detection of unexpected objects, the diagnosis of spacecraft damage, and the inspection of critical spacecraft components. Attention is presently given to image functions, the 'windowing' of a view, the number of cameras required for inspection tasks, the choice of incoherent or coherent (laser) illumination, three-dimensional-to-two-dimensional model-matching, edge- and region-segmentation techniques, and motion analysis for tracking.
