Digital equipment for the antenna pointing system

This paper describes the digital control and data processing portions of the antenna pointing system used to track the Telstar satellite. The description is functional in nature, giving the form of the inputs, the functions performed, and the outputs produced. A general description of the digital equipment is followed by a discussion of the functions performed by the subsystems, the operational modes provided, the equipment features, and the operating experience.

Digital techniques used in the steering apparatus of the GPO steerable aerial at Goonhilly Downs

A discription of the logic design for the digital control equipment is followed by further descriptions of items of particular interest. The means of applying off-sets to the demanded aerial position for over-coming possible inaccuracy of the predicted orbit; and to demand accuratly determined velocities manually; means of conversion from pure binary form to provide displays in terms of angles, and the derivation of analogue voltages for the for the servo-amplifiers are discussed in detail. A critical analysis of the equipment in the light of operational experience concludes the paper.

Lunar rock splitter/can sealer

A manually powered and operated force generating device fractures lunar material as received from the moon and seals cans containing lunar samples. The rock splitting and can sealing operations are carried out in a vacuum environment. Can sealing is a cold welding process that requires a pressure of 125,000 psi (generating 32,000 lb for the largest can used). The design and modification of the device and the operating experience are described.

Statistical survey of XB-70 airplane responses and control usage with an illustration of the application to handling qualities criteria

The magnitude and frequency of occurrence of aircraft responses and control inputs during 27 flights of the XB-70 airplane were measured. Exceedance curves are presented for the airplane responses and control usage. A technique is presented which makes use of these exceedance curves to establish or verify handling qualities criteria. This technique can provide a means of incorporating current operational experience in handling qualities requirements for future aircraft.

Space vehicle gyroscope sensor applications

Considerations which form the basis for the specification, design and evaluation of gyroscopes for spaceborne sensor applications are presented. The applications are distinguished by basic vehicle category: launch vehicles, spacecraft, entry vehicles and sounding rockets. Specifically excluded from discussion are gyroscope effector applications. Exotic or unconventional gyroscopes for which operational experience is nonexistent are mentioned only briefly to alert the reader of future trends. General requirements for testing and evaluation are discussed.
