Non-Aqueous Processing

Next generation nuclear reactors may require alternative processing flowsheets, and one area of particular interest is around non-aqueous process flowsheets. These flowsheets utilize high temperatures and molten salt systems to solubilize the spent fuel and the fission products. Separations are then achieved primarily through electrochemical processes. These processes can either be off-line, such as pyro processing, where the spent fuel charge is processed after removal from the reactor, or potentially in-line in a molten salt reactor configuration. There are a large number of process options that can be explored using these non-aqueous processing options. A brief summary of both chloride and fluoride salt processing approaches is provided as background for how these process flowsheets could be developed

Data for Filling the Cellulosic Bio-economy Gap by Utilizing a Wedge Approach Combined with Stakeholder Collaboration

The price gap between the market and breakeven prices of cellulosic biomass for farmers represents a significant barrier to the development of a low-carbon cellulosic bioeconomy. Using a bottom-up, agent-based modeling tool that replicates the behaviors and interactions of key stakeholders, this study analyzes the emergence of a cellulosic bioeconomy at the local scale through a wedge approach that examines an integrated portfolio of multiple policy options, including subsidies for small-scale bioproducts and environmental credits. The role of collaboration among multiple stakeholders, such as biomass producers (farmers), bio-refinery industry, government, and society, is assessed for filling the price gap. Using the Sangamon River Basin as a case study site, we evaluate the effectiveness of the wedge approach by comparing simulation results from multiple scenarios, each incorporating different combinations of bioeconomy wedges, with and without stakeholder collaboration. Results underscore that active collaboration among stakeholders acts as a catalyst enlarging the effectiveness of bioeconomy wedges. Including the carbon credits and environmental value in the policy portfolio is found to bridge the price gap through collective contributions from diverse stakeholders, where the cellulosic biofuel and bioproduct industry plays a pivotal role. Although this study is conducted at the local watershed scale, the methodology and findings offer valuable insights for market development in other watersheds and the potential scaling of local markets to regional and national levels.

Comparative analysis of energy deposition modes available in Serpent 2 within the framework of the supercritical water reactor - Fuel qualification test reactor physics benchmark

A joint European Canadian Chinese development of a supercritical water-cooled small modular reactor (SCW-SMR) technology is in progress since September 2020 in the framework of a Horizon 2020 project called ECC-SMART. As a main purpose of the project, proper estimates of energy deposition and its spatial distribution are prerequisites for the accurate analysis of safety related parameters of the SCW-SMR concept under development. A supercritical water reactor fuel computational benchmark model, provided by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, was applied for detailed comparison of different energy deposition calculation options available in the Serpent 2 Monte Carlo code. The effect of energy deposition options on the normalization of the results as well as on the spatial distribution of the energy deposition are discussed. Consistent energy deposition calculation methods are presented between three Monte Carlo codes, viz., Serpent 2, MCNP6 and OpenMC. Although resource-intensive, the use of the coupled neutron-photon transport mode of Serpent 2 is recommended for accurate spatial and quantitative characterization of energy deposition in the SCW-SMR fuel assemblies, accounting for both neutron and photon heating of all the materials. Competitiveness Assessment of Decarbonizing Electricity and Process Heat Supply to a Campus with a Small Nuclear Reactor

This paper analyzes the competitiveness of siting a small nuclear reactor to support decarbonization of sites requiring tens of MW of electricity and/or process heat to support centralized heating and cooling system. This paper focuses on campuses as representative of sites with collections of buildings and research facilities with decarbonization needs represented by buildings heating, and electricity consumption by electrical loads which may include cooling via chilled water (e.g., for air conditioning and to cool down computer clusters). A nuclear reactor can be considered to decarbonize a site’s high-temperature steam generation used mostly for building heating needs, climate control, and hot water, by supplying process heat capabilities, while electricity decarbonization would be achieved mostly by the grid. However, a secondary application can be considered to maximize reactor utilization and avoid ramping down the reactor if the steam demand varies significantly throughout the year. Chilled water generation through steam-driven systems was identified as an attractive secondary option for the site analyzed, due to potential for plant design simplification, while electricity generation could be considered as well to reduce electricity purchases for a wider range of site applications. For a campus with peak 60MW thermal power demand, a small nuclear reactor with similar thermal power rating would almost eliminate CO2 emissions from steam generation and reduce electricity imports for chilled water production. A preliminary techno-economic feasibility study shows that a small nuclear reactor design that is optimized to support process heat can represent an economically feasible option when compared with other decarbonization alternatives.

TEAMER: MADWEC Techno-Economic Analysis

The objective of this project was for the facility to conduct a techno-economic assessment (TEA) of the Maximal Asymmetric Drag Wave Energy Converter (MADWEC), developed by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (UMass Dartmouth). MADWEC is used for powering remote monitoring and Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) charging systems compared to other existing power supply options. The assessment estimates capital expenditures (CapEx), operational expenditures (OpEx), and power performance for 18 scenarios with the purpose of identifying key cost drivers, comparing total system cost, and comparing the power performance of the power supply options in terms of required installed capacity and estimated theoretical annual energy performance. The 18 assessed scenarios include two end-uses: 1) AUV charging and 2) offshore remote monitoring); three power sources: 1) MADWEC), 2) photovoltaic (PV) solar buoy, 3) and traditional battery swapping); and three locations; 1) nearshore, 2) far-offshore, and 3) high-latitude). In addition, other project goals included developing high level installation, operation, and maintenance plans for each scenario. The techno-economic model, created in Microsoft Excel, estimates CapEx, OpEx, and the power performance of each power supply source. The model has a dynamic format that allows custom inputs to accommodate future changes to the systems being assessed. This is a TEA for the MADWEC project, TEAMER RFTS 7 (request for technical support) program.

Onboard Transit Survey - Philadelphia Regional - 2012

The main purpose of the survey was to gather current data on how the transit system was being used in 2010. The survey asked passengers a series of questions about their household characteristics and the trip that they were making on the day of the survey. The survey was conducted in three phases between December 2010 and December 2011. Close to 1.1 million unlinked trips are made on an average weekday on all 140 routes systemwide. The survey results suggest several different populations of users. At the low end of the economic spectrum are passengers who really have no other transit option besides public transit. There is also a group of passengers that appear to be somewhat better off financially. They could be categorized as middle-income households, and many of these passengers may have other options for transportation, but they choose to take public transit because it makes sense for them from a financial or time-savings standpoint. Finally, there may be a smaller group of passengers who may live and work downtown in relatively high-paying positions. These passengers can afford to take a taxi but choose to ride transit because of its convenience.

Dataset 2: A National Dataset on Human Choices in Pooled Rideshare, 2022

Dataset 2: A National Dataset on Human Choices in Pooled Rideshare, 2022. Dataset Description: Pooled Rideshare Acceptance Survey - Phase 2 (2022, N = 2,884). This dataset captures responses from a nationally representative sample of 2,884 adults across the United States to understand choice behaviors between personal and pooled rideshare services. The primary objective of this research is to investigate choice behaviors in rideshare services and provide insights that inform service design, policymaking, and transportation planning, with the aim of encouraging pooled rideshare adoption and enhancing transportation network energy efficiency. Data was collected via an online survey administered through a national panel provider. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 94 years, and representation from all U.S. regions. The survey was designed with a focus on investigating the stated-preference between personal and pooled rideshare services. Each participant responded to 20 stated-preference questions, where they were presented with a hypothesized situation to choose between a personal rideshare option and a pooled rideshare option to complete a trip. The sociodemographic information and attitudes towards factors of pooled rideshare acceptance were also collected to support the comprehensive investigation of participants’ rideshare choice behaviors. - Phase_2_Final - Each row represents an individual respondent, and each column corresponds to a variable such as stated-preference scenario attributes, stated-preference scenario responses, attitudes toward specific service features, and sociodemographic data. The data is available in both .CSV and .SAV formats. - Phase_2_Final_MapFile - The accompanying data dictionary explains all variable labels, response scales, and codes. An .XLSX format of the full survey instrument is included to support interpretation and reuse of the dataset.
