Cathodochromic storage device

A memory and display device has been developed by combing a fast phosphor layer with a cathodochromic layer in a cathode ray tube. Images are stored as patterns of electron beam induced optical density in the cathodo-chromic material. The stored information is recovered by exciting the backing, fast phosphor layer with a constant current electron beam and detecting the emitted radiation which is modulated by absorption in the cathodochromic layer. The storage can be accomplished in one or more TV frames (1/30 sec each). More than 500 TV line resolution and close to 2:1 contrast ratio are possible. The information storage time in a dark environment is approximately 24 hours. A reconstituted (readout) electronic video signal can be generated continuously for times in excess of 10 minutes or periodically for several hours.

Cryogenic gyroscope housing

A cryogenic gyroscope housing having gas spin-up means provided in annular discs inserted between housing shells is described. A circumferential recess in the inner edges of the discs at their juncture serves as the gas spin-up channel, and recesses in the discs at their junctures with the shells form suction channels. The discs also have inlet and outlet ports communicating with the spin-up channel and exhaust slots communicating with the suction channels. Mating surfaces of the discs and housing shells are held in position by optical contact at the equational plane of the housing. Suspension electrodes and thin-film readout loops are disposed in shells. A centering band and clamp rings provide for proper alinement and placement of parts in formation of optical contact joints.

A synchronous binary array divider

An asynchronous binary divider formed of an array of identical logic cells is described. Each cell includes a single bit binary subtractor and a selection gate. The array is connected to divisor, dividend, quotient and remainder registers. Divisor and dividend numbers are read into the divisor and dividend registers, respectively. The array of identical logic cells performs the division in parallel asynchronously and places the results of the division in the quotient and remainder registers for subsequent readout.

Modernization of the 60-inch telescope at the Mount Wilson Observatory

A contract for modernization of the Mount Wilson 60-inch telescope was awarded. Under this contract, the original hour angle and declination drives were replaced, digital coordinate readouts were added, a Cassegrain/ coude flip cage was built and installed, the telescope was completely rewired, a new control console was installed, and a coude spectrograph was completed. Extensive building modifications also were made to provide a working floor at mezzanine level for a computer and a coude observing room. These modifications and additions were completed by February 1970, and the telescope returned to regular and continuous use for stellar and planetary astronomy.

A magnetic field measurement technique using a miniature transducer

The development, fabrication, and application of a magnetometer are described. The magnetometer has a miniature transducer and is capable of automatic scanning. The magnetometer described here is capable of detecting static magnetic fields as low as 1.6 A/m and its transducer has an active area 0.64 mm by 0.76 mm. Thin and rugged, the transducer uses wire, 0.05 mm in diameter, which is plated with a magnetic film, enabling measurement of transverse magnetic fields as close as 0.08 mm from a surface. The magnetometer, which is simple to operate and has a fast response, uses an inexpensive clip-on milliammeter (commonly found in most laboratories) for driving and processing the electrical signals and readout. A specially designed transducer holding mechanism replaces the XY recorder ink pen; this mechanism provides the basis for an automatic scanning technique. The instrument has been applied to the measurements of magnetic fields arising from remanent magnetization in experimental plated-wire memory planes and regions of magnetic activity in geological rock specimens.

PLZT block data composers operated in differential phase mode

The use of PLZT ceramics with the 7/65/35 composition in block data composer (BDC) input devices for holographic memory systems has previously been described for operation in the strain biased, scattering, and edge effect modes. A new and promising mode of BDC operation is the differential phase mode in which each element of a matrix array BDC acts as a phase modulator. The phase modulation results from a phase difference in the optical path length between the electrically poled and depoled states of the PLZT. It is shown that a PLZT BDC can be used as a matrix-type phase modulator to record and process digital data by the differential phase mode in a holographic recording/processing system with readout contrast ratios of between 10:1 and 15:1. The differential phase mode has the advantages that strain bias is not required and that the thickness and strain variations in the PLZT are cancelled out.

Real-time incoherent-to-coherent optical converter

Description of a real-time incoherent-to-coherent optical converter designed for application in image processing systems. The converter utilizes the photoconductivity effect of the compound Bi(12)SiO(20) for spatial modulation of electrical polarization in the compound. An optically absorbed write-in image is stored as an image polarization pattern in the device. Readout is effectuated electrooptically by using phase retardation in a polarized coherent light beam during the passage through the crystal. The operating mode required for achieving continuous image conversion with a high-speed recyclability is discussed. The performance characteristics of the converter are given and the fabrication technology is described.

Measurement of cosmic ray positron and negatron spectra between 50 and 800 MeV

A magnetic spectrometer employing digital-readout spark chambers and a gas Cerenkov threshold counter was used to measure the spectra of cosmic ray negatrons and positrons over the range from 50 to 800 MeV during two balloon flights from Ft. Churchill, Manitoba, in July 1972. A preliminary analysis of data from the first flight suggests that the total electron spectrum in this range has not fully recovered to its condition at solar minimum observed in 1965. The preliminary results also provide upper limits for the positive fraction over the range from 200 to 800 MeV which are consistent with the values found in earlier measurements.

A multiwire proportional counter system for high energy astrophysics

Resolution tests of multiwire proportional counter delay line readout systems are reported. The system is being developed at NASA/JSC for use in a large balloon borne magnet spectrometer. The system is ultimately intended for use in Space Shuttle missions. Tests of two different types of delay line and associated electronics carried out in minimum ionizing particle beams (accelerator and sea level cosmic ray) are reported. Resolution performance is shown to be strongly dependent on type of gas mixture and in the case of inclined events upon the propagation velocity of the delay line. The resolution performance achieved for magic gas chamber filling (100 um at normal incidence) is far superior to any other state of the art technique capable of being applied to large geometry factor systems.

Electron beam fluorescence system to measure gas density in impulse facilities

Very rapid measurements, ranging from a few microsecond to milliseconds in duration, characterize studies made in shock regions or behind them. A system to measure gas density under such conditions in a 15.24-cm (6-in.) expansion tube is described. The basic elements are an electron beam of moderate energy and high current capability, an optical detector, and the associated electronics and data readout equipment. A heated-cathode electron gun, capable of pulsed operation and delivering up to 200 milliamperes current, provides the source of electrons. Optics include a simple collector lens, aperture, collimator lens, filters, and a photomultiplier tube. The photomultiplier output signal was recorded by means of photographed oscilloscope traces for pulsed beam operation.

AIROscope stellar acquisition

The acquisition system which operates in conjunction with a balloon-borne TV system, boresighted to a telescope is described. It has two main functions, a star field monitor and an offset star tracker. The design of the system was strongly influenced by the TV camera, which uses the same interlaced scanning system as is employed in commercial television broadcasting. To reduce power and bandwidth requirements, the star field information transmitted in our system consists only of the horizontal and vertical coordinates of each star and its brightness. As a star field monitor the system provides video thresholding, camera blemish suppression, coordinate digitization in 3 axes, circuity to recognize as single star the dispersed video signals resulting from one star overlapping adjacent scanning lines and storage of all signals for readout by the telemetry at appropriate times.

A summary of ERTS-1 data collection system applications

Geographically, applications were made over nearly the entire area where direct readout could be accomplished using the data acquisition stations in the ERTS-1 system. The extreme areas included Iceland, the Canadian Arctic, Alaska, Hawaii and Central America. In the discipline sense the majority of applications were in the water resources area with other applications being formally and informally reported in meteorology, oceanography, volcano surveillance and forestry. Installation and maintenance of the data collection platforms, as is true with nearly all new systems, was not accomplished without difficulty. On the whole, however, it has gone well enough so that it is agreed that it is a system which is amenable to installation in a variety of physical situations and the installation is accomplished with an ease commensurate with eventual use in an operational system.

Neural control: Long-range prospects

The development of long term connections with the nervous system, are considered for direct transfer of information into the nervous system, and for direct readout of information from the nervous system. The study of basic neurophysiological control mechanisms operating in the nervous system is advocated for the investigation of potential applications of such developments. These applications depend strongly on the successful achievement of the first three objectives. An attempt is made to envision the social consequences of these developments.
