Satellite relay telemetry in the surveillance of active volcanoes and major fault zones

A review was made of efforts to develop a dense telemetered microearthquake network to study earthquake mechanics along the San Andreas fault and the strain mechanics of the Kilauea Volcano. The principle elements and objectives of the ERTS-A proposal are outlined. Some of the aspects of the earthquake network and the results obtained from it as well as some promising experiments in computerized record processing are discussed.

Television broadcast relay system, volume 2

A statistical analysis of propagation characteristics at 12 GHz for the design of a worldwide communication satellite system is reported. High power spaceborne TV transmitter design and the development of a low cost, low noise ground receiver for domestic reception are considered most important for implementation of a TVBS system.

One way and two way VHF ranging system performance for tracking and data relay applications

The trajectory of an orbiting spacecraft is determined from an orbit determination program. Two inputs to this program, among others, are the range and range rate relative to some known location. The arithmetic and measurement errors in the determinations of the range, range rate, and range differences were identified and evaluated. These uncertainties are tabulated for one way and two way systems. A comparison of the measurement error contributions illustrate the predominance of thermal noise effects under low power budget conditions, with the other error sources becoming relevent for the high power budget case. The evaluated uncertainties are summarized as root sum squared noise and bias errors.

An efficient multiplexing approach for adaptive aircraft communications via a relay satellite.

Description of a coherent wide-angle multiplexing approach which is 4 to 8 dB more efficient in the utilization of satellite power as compared to a multicarrier transmission accessing a single TWT amplifier transponder. The wide-angle multiplexing approach achieves this performance by efficiently trading the modulation power improvement against backoff at the satellite earth terminal phase modulator. A simple addition of an amplitude clipper at the modulator input is critical to the proper operation of the system.

Tracking Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) VHF propagation study

A study performed to investigate the use of the Bent Ionospheric Model in computing corrections to the range and range rate measurements of the TDRSS satellites is documented. Several orbital configurations between the two satellites are discussed as to their effects on total electron content along the radio path between the satellites. Problem areas in the accurate computation of total electron content and range rate corrections are also discussed. The Bent Ionospheric Model gives the electron density versus height profile as a function of latitude, longitude, height, time, season, and solar flux.

Advanced tracking and data relay experiment study: Multimode transponder experiment

A series of experiments utilizing a multimode transponder mounted in an aircraft working either through a spacecraft or directly with a ground station is studied. The purpose of the experiments is to determine the best modulation and encoding techniques for combating RFI and multipath propagation and to determine the characteristics of VHF and UHF RFI in discreet bands. The experiments would also determine the feasibility and accuracy of range and range rate measurements with the various modulation and encoding techniques.

Tracking and data relay satellite system configuration and tradeoff study. Volume 4: TDRS system operation and control and telecommunications service system, part 1

Major study areas treated in this volume are: 1) operations and control and 2) the telecommunication service system. The TDRS orbit selection, orbital deployment, ground station visibility, sequence of events from launch to final orbit position, and TDRS control center functions required for stationkeeping, repositioning, attitude control, and antenna pointing are briefly treated as part of the operations and control section. The last topic of this section concerns the operations required for efficiently providing the TDRSS user telecommunication services. The discussion treats functions of the GSFC control and data processing facility, ground station, and TDRS control center. The second major portion of this volume deals with the Telecommunication Service System (TSS) which consists of the ground station, TDRS communication equipment and the user transceiver. A summary of the requirements and objectives for the telecommunication services and a brief summary of the TSS capabilities is followed by communication system analysis, signal design, and equipment design. Finally, descriptions of the three TSS elements are presented.
