Cryogenic switched MOSFET characterization

Both p channel and n channel enhancement mode MOSFETs can be readily switched on and off at temperatures as low as 2.8 K so that switch sampled readout of a VLWIR Ge:Ga focal plane is electronically possible. Noise levels as low as 100 rms electrons per sample (independent of sample rate) can be achieved using existing p channel MOSFETs, at overall rates up to 30,000 samples/second per multiplexed channel (e.g., 32 detectors at a rate of almost 1,000 frames/second). Run of the mill devices, including very low power dissipation n channel FETs would still permit noise levels of the order of 500 electrons/sample.

Push-pull converter with energy saving circuit for protecting switching transistors from peak power stress

In a push-pull converter, switching transistors are protected from peak power stresses by a separate snubber circuit in parallel with each comprising a capacitor and an inductor in series, and a diode in parallel with the inductor. The diode is connected to conduct current of the same polarity as the base-emitter juction of the transistor so that energy stored in the capacitor while the transistor is switched off, to protect it against peak power stress, discharges through the inductor when the transistor is turned on, and after the capacitor is discharges through the diode. To return this energy to the power supply, or to utilize this energy in some external circuit, the inductor may be replaced by a transformer having its secondary winding connected to the power supply or to the external circuit.

Repetitive Q-switched operation of x-axis Nd:La2Be2O5

The repetitive Q-switched performances of an x-axis neodymium-doped lanthanum beryllate (Nd:BeL) laser and the current state-of-the-art Nd:YAG laser are compared. Output beam pulse energy, peak power, pulse width, beam divergence and mode pattern were measured for a gold-plated single elliptical cavity using a xenon flashlamp for excitation. The output of the Nd:BeL laser is found to exceed that of the Nd:YAG laser by a factor of two at Q-switched repetition rates on the order of 1 Hz, due to the smaller stimulated emission cross section of the x-axis Nd:BeL. When the repetition rate is increased to 10 Hz, the Nd:BeL output falls to a level three fifths lower than its low-rate value, while Nd:YAG output remained essentially constant. Analysis reveals that the decrease in output may be attributed to a depolarization loss due to thermally induced stress birefringence.

A new approach to the minimum weight/loss design of switching power converters

A new technique using the mathematical nonlinear programming ALAG is proposed to facilitate design optimizations of switching power converters. This computer-aided approach provides a minimum weight (or loss) design down to the details of component level and concurrently satisfies all related power-circuit performance requirements. It also provides such design insights as tradeoffs between power loss and system weight as the switching frequency is increased.

An efficient procedure for scheduling packets in a multibeam satellite-switched TDMA system

A satellite-switched, multi-beam system using N sub T transponders is considered, in which a large number of ground stations are distributed over N sub Z (not less than N sub T) zones. Each station transmits information digitally in a packet-switched time division multiple access mode, with all packets of fixed length. A demand-assigned packet scheduling procedure is described which achieves high throughput with relatively low average time delay, adapts easily to fluctuating demand from individual earth stations, and automatically schedules transmissions to avoid adjacent zone interference.

High Power Switching Transistor

Improved switching transistors handle 400-A peak currents and up to 1,200 V. Using large diameter silicon wafers with twice effective area as D60T, form basis for D7 family of power switching transistors. Package includes npn wafer, emitter preform, and base-contact insert. Applications are: 25to 50-kilowatt high-frequency dc/dc inverters, VSCF converters, and motor controllers for electrical vehicles.

Improved Two-Phase Switching Regulator

Coupled-inductor polyphase regulator has better efficiency and lower inductor losses. Improved two-phase switching regulator employs negative coupling between inductors to achieve better power-to-weight ratio while reducing peak switching currents and inductor losses. Improvement of about 35 percent using new technique.

Heat pipe thermal switch

A thermal switch for controlling the dissipation of heat between a body is described. The thermal switch is comprised of a flexible bellows defining an expansible vapor chamber for a working fluid located between an evaporation and condensation chamber. Inside the bellows is located a coiled retaining spring and four axial metal mesh wicks, two of which have their central portions located inside of the spring while the other two have their central portions located between the spring and the side wall of the bellows. The wicks are terminated and are attached to the inner surfaces of the outer end walls of evaporation and condensation chambers respectively located adjacent to the heat source and heat sink. The inner surfaces of the end walls furthermore include grooves to provide flow channels of the working fluid to and from the wick ends. The evaporation and condensation chambers are connected by turnbuckles and tension springs to provide a set point adjustment for setting the gap between an interface plate on the condensation chamber and the heat sink.

Packet communication system for a multi-beam beam switched satellite repeater

This paper presents the design of a packet-switched communication system using a multi-beam, beam switched satellite repeater. The protocol provides a combination of random access via Slotted ALOHA techniques and demand assigned access using collision requests. This allows efficient bandwidth usage and low average delays. Minimization of earth station cost was a major objective. This was achieved by transferring the bulk of the system complexity to the satellite repeater and the (ground) network controller. This centrally controlled protocol would allow greater system stability and would permit system reconfiguration in response to changes in traffic intensity. Sufficient signalling is also incorporated to allow both rate diversity to combat fading and timing corrections to account for satellite drift.

Automatic Monitoring of Switching Power Supplies

Fast analysis of switching waveforms allows detection of impending failures. Switching power conditioner converts dc power from source such as battery or solar cell array to well regulated dc at convenient voltages and currents. Concept originally developed for space stations and spacecraft also suitable for power conditioning equipment in aircraft and in terrestrial photovoltaic power systems.

An overview of existing switch and power supply technology applicable to space launch, a new candidate pulsed power supply for Earth-to-space rail launcher duty, the inverse railgun flux compressor, and a set of switching experiments to study further the feasibility of Earth-to-space launch are discussed.

Input filter compensation for switching regulators

A novel input filter compensation scheme for a buck regulator that eliminates the interaction between the input filter output impedance and the regulator control loop is presented. The scheme is implemented using a feedforward loop that senses the input filter state variables and uses this information to modulate the duty cycle signal. The feedforward design process presented is seen to be straightforward and the feedforward easy to implement. Extensive experimental data supported by analytical results show that significant performance improvement is achieved with the use of feedforward in the following performance categories: loop stability, audiosusceptibility, output impedance and transient response. The use of feedforward results in isolating the switching regulator from its power source thus eliminating all interaction between the regulator and equipment upstream. In addition the use of feedforward removes some of the input filter design constraints and makes the input filter design process simpler thus making it possible to optimize the input filter. The concept of feedforward compensation can also be extended to other types of switching regulators.

High Speed Crystal Growth by Q-switched Laser Melting

The modification of the structural and electrical properties of semiconductors short radiation pulses obtained from Q-switched lasers is described. These modifications are accomplished by high heating and cooling rates. This processing revealed novel crystal growth and high speed resolidification phenomena. The behavior of semiconductor Si is analyzed. The annealing process typically employs short pulses of radiation in or near the visible region of the spectrum. The Q-switched ruby and Nd-YAG lasers are commonly used and these are sometimes mode locked to reduce the pulse length still further. Material to be annealed can be processed with a single large area radiation spot. Alternatively, a small radiation spot size can be used and a large sample area is covered by overlapping irradiated regions.

High-Speed Computer-Controlled Switch-Matrix System

High-speed computer-controlled switch-matrix system developed for communication satellites. Satellite system controlled by onboard computer and all message-routing functions between uplink and downlink beams handled by newly developed switch-matrix system. Message requires only 2-microsecond interconnect period, repeated every millisecond.

Microwave Power Combiner With Switching Diodes

In multiple-port microwave power combiner, each of outputs of two or more power amplifiers of same frequency and phase passed to common output port separately or together. Each amplifier connected to combiner through switch consisting of resonant structures, radio-frequency chokes, and diode. Switches not only permit flexiblity in selection of amplifiers but isolate unused amplifiers from network, all while operating at relatively low power loss.

Operational air traffic control requirements for the new Voice Switching and Control System

Final user requirements defined for the Voice Switching and Control System (VSCS) to be implemented for ATC functions as part of the Area Control Facility (ACF) concept for the National Airspace System (NAS) are described. The VSCS will be communications equipment at operational stations, supervisory positions, and support systems, the switching system itself, and interfaces between the VSCS and other systems. Supervisory users will include the Area Manager, Traffic Management Coordinator, a Military Operations Specialists, a Weather Coordinator, a NAS manager, Maintenance, and a flight Data Communications Specialist. The VSCS will supply computerized communications capability within and among ATC centers. Details of the efforts used to define the system requirements are recounted, noting the heavy reliance on recommendations from active ATC personnel.

Cross-Array Antenna With Switched Steering

Selected phase shifting of feeds to antenna elements aims antenna beam. Antenna for Space Shuttle controlled in two dimensions by double-pole, double-throw switches antenna feeds. Switches control phasing of antenna elements by transposing transmission-line delay elements between feeds to pairs of elements located on opposite sides of antenna. Same principles can be applied to antennas with additional elements along each axis.
