Real-time data acquisition system assists engine test program

The mixed-fuels program examined included two major phases: the development of a reformer that would provide an onboard source of hydrogen, and the testing of induction systems and mixed fuels on a conventional V8 engine to verify the concept and define the system's potential. The discussion is limited to the engine testing phase. The testing program is reviewed and the effectiveness of an IDAC data acquisition system in supporting the engine testing program is demonstrated. The data system's application is illustrated by examples.

Computer assisted expansion of 1/Delta series with Newton iteration

The Newton iteration method has been widely applied to the solution of various equations such as Kepler's equation. In this study it is used in planetary and satellite theory as a general procedure for Fourier series inversion. The method is used for the construction of the 1/Delta series either in literal form or in numerical form with small eccentricities and inclinations substituted in advance. This usually results in very compact series. With the Newton iteration procedure and a computerized series manipulation technique, the Fourier series of 1/Delta of the mutual perturbations among most natural satellites can be easily constructed.

System for analysis of LANDSAT agricultural data: Automatic computer-assisted proportion estimation of local areas

The author has identified the following significant results. A conceptual man machine system framework was created for a large scale agricultural remote sensing system. The system is based on and can grow out of the local recognition mode of LACIE, through a gradual transition wherein computer support functions supplement and replace AI functions. Local proportion estimation functions are broken into two broad classes: (1) organization of the data within the sample segment; and (2) identification of the fields or groups of fields in the sample segment.

Computer modeling of a regenerative solar-assisted Rankine power cycle

A detailed interpretation of the computer program that describes the performance of one of these cycles; namely, a regenerative Rankine power cycle is presented. Water is used as the working medium throughout the cycle. The solar energy collected at relatively low temperature level presents 75 to 80% of the total heat demand and provides mainly the latent heat of vaporization. Another energy source at high temperature level superheats the steam and supplements the solar energy share. A program summary and a numerical example showing the sequency of computations are included. The outcome from the model comprises line temperatures, component heat rates, specific steam consumption, percentage of solar energy contribution, and the overall thermal efficiency.

Jet pump assisted arterial heat pipe

This paper discusses the concept of an arterial heat pipe with a capillary driven jet pump. The jet pump generates a suction which pumps vapor and noncondensible gas from the artery. The suction also forces liquid into the artery and maintains it in a primed condition. A theoretical model was developed which predicts the existence of two stable ranges. Up to a certain tilt the artery will prime by itself once a heat load is applied to the heat pipe. At higher tilts, the jet pump can maintain the artery in a primed condition but self-priming is not possible. A prototype heat pipe was tested which self-primed up to a tilt of 1.9 cm, with a heat load of 500 watts. The heat pipe continued to prime reliably when operated as a VCHP, i.e., after a large amount of noncondensible gas was introduced.

A first interpretation of East African swiddening via computer-assisted analysis of 3 Landsat tapes

A preliminary application of the machine processing of Landsat data for the identification of swidden farming in East Africa is discussed. Three sets of Landsat data were analyzed: the 1972 mid-dry season, the 1973 late dry season, and the 1975 early wet season. The analysis procedure consisted of: (1) a preprocessing step to de-skew, rotate, and rescale the data, (2) a geometric correction process, (3) photographic enlargement, and (4) a procedure to obtain spectral response values for training the classification algorithm.

Surfactant-assisted liquefaction of particulate carbonaceous substances

A slurry of carbonaceous particles such as coal containing an oil soluble polar substituted oleophilic surfactant, suitably an amine substituted long chain hydrocarbon, is liquefied at high temperature and high hydrogen presence. The pressure of surfactant results in an increase in yield and the conversion product contains a higher proportion of light and heavy oils and less asphaltene than products from other liquefaction processes.

Computer assisted thermal-vacuum testing

In testing complex systems and components under dynamic thermal-vacuum environments, it is desirable to optimize the environment control sequence in order to reduce test duration and cost. This paper describes an approach where a computer is utilized as part of the test control operation. Real time test data is made available to the computer through time-sharing terminals at appropriate time intervals. A mathematical model of the test article and environmental control equipment is then operated on using the real time data to yield current thermal status, temperature analysis, trend prediction and recommended thermal control setting changes to arrive at the required thermal condition. The data acquisition interface and the time-sharing hook-up to an IBM-370 computer is described along with a typical control program and data demonstrating its use.

Results of heating mode performance tests of a solar-assisted heat pump

The performance of a heat pump, utilizing 8.16 square meters of low-cost solar collectors as the evaporator in a Freon-114 refrigeration cycle, was determined under actual insolation conditions during the summer and fall of 1976. C.O.P.'s (coefficient of performance) greater than 3 were obtained with condensing temperatures around 78 C and evaporating temperatures around 27 C. Ambient temperatures were about 3 C above evaporating temperatures. Similar performance levels were obtained at other insolation and temperature conditions. Experience with the system has identified some component and system changes which should increase the obtainable C.O.P. to about 4.0. These are described along with the system's design rationale. The accumulated data are presented as an appendix.

Technical assistance for law-enforcement communications: Case study report

Methods developed to improve police communications systems are described. Use of queueing analysis shows several ways of improving time of response to inquiries made from the field for license plate checks and for information on current wants and warrants, through a state multiple switcher network. Design criteria for more efficient centralized switching equipment are developed. A message load problem experienced in a dispatch center is analyzed, showing that communications could be improved by adding communications channels, not by adding people.

Technical assistance for law-enforcement communications: Case study report two

Two case histories are presented. In one study the feasibility of consolidating dispatch center operations for small agencies is considered. System load measurements were taken and queueing analysis applied to determine numbers of personnel required for each separate agency and for a consolidated dispatch center. Functional requirements were developed and a cost model was designed to compare relative costs of various alternatives including continuation of the present system, consolidation of a manual system, and consolidated computer-aided dispatching. The second case history deals with the consideration of a multi-regional, intrastate radio frequency for improved interregional communications. Sample standards and specifications for radio equipment are provided.

Silicon ribbon technology assessment 1978-1986 - A computer-assisted analysis using PECAN

The paper presents a 1978-1986 economic outlook for silicon ribbon technology based on the capillary action shaping technique. The outlook is presented within the framework of two sets of scenarios, which develop strategy for approaching the 1986 national energy capacity cost objective of $0.50/WE peak. The PECAN (Photovoltaic Energy Conversion Analysis) simulation technique is used to develop a 1986 sheet material price ($50/sq m) which apparently can be attained without further scientific breakthrough.
