Development of a Compact Lidar Sensor for Terrain Relative Navigation and Terrain Hazard Avoidance

A Lidar sensor utilizing linear-mode flash lidar technology and a novel Super-Resolution technique has been developed for providing Terrain Relative Navigation and Hazard Avoidance capabilities onboard landing vehicles. Processing algorithms for precision navigation and safe landing location identification take advantage of the uniform fixed pixels property of generated high resolution Digital Elevation Maps to achieve high reliability operation in near real-time. This paper describes the results of drone and helicopter flight tests of a breadboard system, explains the design and capabilities of a recently built compact prototype unit, and proposes a concepts of operation for future landing missions.

Attract-repel path planner system for collision avoidance

A system for determining a travel direction that avoids objects when a vehicle travels from a current location to a target location is provided. The system determines a travel direction based on an attract-repel model. The system assigns a repel value to the object locations and an attract value. A repel represents a magnitude of a directional repulsive force, and the attract value represents the magnitude of a directional repulsive force. The system calculates an attract-repel field having an attract-repel magnitude and attract-repel direction for the current location based on the repel values and their directions and the attract value and its direction. The system then determines the travel direction for a vehicle to be the direction of the attract-repel field at the current location.

Optimizing the tuning range of the Fermilab Recycler 53MHz RF cavities by exploiting the avoided crossing of the tuner and cavity modes

The electromagnetic eigenmodes of the Fermilab Recycler RF cavities were simulated with ACE3P running on NERSC's 'Perlmutter' supercomputer in an attempt to optimize their tuning range to comfortably support slip-stacking. A theory, based on coupled circuits and avoided crossings, was developed to explain the origins of the tuning range for tuner-cavity waveguide systems. This provided a logical, rigorous method to carry out this optimization, although engineering problems due to high voltages in the tuner and the operational $\mu$ range of the garnet had to be carefully implemented. It was shown that the desired goal of 10kHz of tuning was not attainable with the current cavity specifications. The maximum tuning range obtained was 5.59kHz for a single tuner with a coaxial line of length 63in. A double tuner cavity was also studied using the simulation software, although with little improvement in the tuning range. A promising technique to improve the tuning range involving the desynchronization of the garnets' magnetic permeabilities is proposed.

Collision avoidance based on traffic management data

A system for determining a travel direction that avoids objects when a vehicle travels from a current location to a target location is provided. The system determines a travel direction based on an attract-repel model. The system accesses external object information provided by an external object system. The external object information may include, for each of a plurality of objects, location, type, and constraint. The system assigns a repel value to the location of each object based on the type of and constraint on the object. The system assigns an attractive value to the target location. The system calculates a cumulative force based on the attractive and repulsive forces and sets the travel direction based on the cumulative force.

Toward active disruption avoidance via real-time estimation of the safe operating region and disruption proximity in tokamaks

This paper describes a real-time capable algorithm for identifying the safe operating region around a tokamak operating point. The region is defined by a convex set of linear constraints, from which the distance of a point from a disruptive boundary can be calculated. The disruptivity of points is calculated from an empirical machine learning predictor that generates the likelihood of disruption. While the likelihood generated by such empirical models can be compared to a threshold to trigger a disruption mitigation system, the safe operating region calculation enables active optimization of the operating point to maintain a safe margin from disruptive boundaries. The proposed algorithm is tested using a random forest disruption predictor fit on data from DIII-D. The safe operating region identification algorithm is applied to historical data from DIII-D showing the evolution of disruptive boundaries and the potential impact of optimization of the operating point. Real-time relevant execution times are made possible by parallelizing many of the calculation steps and implementing the algorithm on a graphics processing unit. Lastly, a real-time capable algorithm for optimizing the target operating point within the identified constraints is also proposed and simulated.

Optimal collision avoidance guidance for formation-flying applications

Several proposed space science missions require deployment of a number of spacecraft to form a single functional unit or a formation flying spacecraft. There are many applications of a formation flying spacecraft; variable baseline optical space interferometry is one of them.

UAS Conflict-Avoidance Using Multiagent RL with Abstract Strategy Type Communication

The use of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in the national airspace is of growing interest to the research community. Safety and scalability of control algorithms are key to the successful integration of autonomous system into a human-populated airspace. In order to ensure safety while still maintaining efficient paths of travel, these algorithms must also accommodate heterogeneity of path strategies of its neighbors. We show that, using multiagent RL, we can improve the speed with which conflicts are resolved in cases with up to 80 aircraft within a section of the airspace. In addition, we show that the introduction of abstract agent strategy types to partition the state space is helpful in resolving conflicts, particularly in high congestion.
