With the growing demand for materials capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and pressures, ceramic components with exceptional corrosion resistance and reliable mechanical properties have experienced a significant surge in demand. However, traditional ceramic forming methods involve high-temperatures and energy-intensive processes that often struggle to produce complex parts or composites efficiently. Polymer-Derived Ceramics (PDCs) offer a transformative solution by using polymeric precursors that can be converted into a wide variety of silicon-based and non-silicon-based ceramics through heat treatment. The polymeric nature of PDC precursors enables the fabrication of geometrically intricate components using conventional polymer-forming techniques at significantly lower processing temperatures. Furthermore, PDCs are well-suited for additive manufacturing (AM), allowing the production of complex structural and functional components through cost-effective, low-temperature processes. By leveraging the diverse properties of PDC materials – each with unique advantages and limitations – manufacturers can optimise performance for specific applications. This review provides an overview of the types of PDCs developed to date and their broad range of applications. Specifically, it delves into the Direct Ink Writing (DIW) process, exploring its rheological requirements and the critical role of fillers in tailoring the rheological properties of polymeric precursors to meet the specific demands of DIW.

Ytterbium disilicate (Yb2Si2O7) is a state-of-the-art topcoat material used in environmental barrier coatings (EBCs) to protect SiC-SiC composites from water vapor corrosion in gas turbine engines. However, it’s degradation by thermochemical and thermomechanical particle interactions may limit its use in next generation engine systems. Several static furnace tests have been performed on Yb2Si2O7 to elucidate methods of degradation, although dynamic testing in an engine-relevant environment has not been carried out. Ultimately, testing and evaluation of materials that incorporates all environmental damage modes will allow for an accurate assessment of long-term durability and operating lifetime. This work details the investigation of particle-induced erosion and corrosion of Yb2Si2O7 in NASA Glenn’s Erosion Burner Rig Facility. Coating durability was investigated as a function of test temperature, particle size, and deposition rate. Thermal cycling was also incorporated into testing to determine the interplay of heating/cooling cycles with particle degradation. Overall, these analyses will be used to determine coating robustness in an engine relevant environment.

The correction for temperature response of optical radiometers implies access to their working temperature (i.e., either the internal or ambient one with the radiometers in thermal equilibrium). With specific reference to a class of widely used hyperspectral radiometers lacking a thermistor to measure the internal temperature, this work investigated the potential for operational corrections relying on the ambient temperature derived from the radiometer dark digital counts. With the objective to keep within approximately 1% the uncertainty for radiometric corrections in the 400–800-nm spectral range, findings showed the applicability of the method for ambient temperatures higher than approximately 30°C. The alternative use of an ambient temperature proxy, determined from the air temperature incremented by a few degrees Celsius, was shown a valid solution to constrain the uncertainty of radiometric corrections to within 1% over the entire 0°–40°C interval.

A generalized law of erosion, in nondimensional form, is proposed. The aforementioned explicitly gives an account of the nature and the microstructure of the material impacted, the angle of impact of the particles, and their hardness. The erosion behavior of various steels, pig iron, and cast iron is examined as well as the behavior of new ordered intermetallic materials, Fe-25% Al-(Zr, Cr, B). The concern of such alloys in an erosion-corrosion environment is shown.
