Capability Enhancements for System-level thermal Hydraulic Modeling of Lead Fast Reactors

This project has focused on the use, assessment, and development of the SAS4A/SASSYS-1 (SAS) safety analysis software. Although SAS was originally intended as a safety analysis tool for Liquid Metal cooled Fast Reactors (LMFRs), which includes both Sodium Fast Reactors (SFRs) and Lead Fast Reactors (LFRs), the vast majority of its recent development and customization has been tailored to SFRs. In general, enhancements that are made to the software for SFRs are applicable to LFRs, however, the fuel composition and corrosive nature of lead requires careful consideration when performing safety analysis of an LFR. In this project an emphasis was placed on closing gaps that are associated with modeling LFRs using SAS. The principal objective of the project was to enhance the ability of SAS as a licensing tool for LFRs. This objective was to be accomplished through three tasks: 1) Enhance the ability of SAS to couple with external software; 2) Improve the underlying physics models in SAS, with priority given to models that are highly relevant to LFRs; 3) Extend the Verification and Validation (V&V) basis of the software

Intrabasin Comparison of the Microbiology and Geochemistry of Produced Fluid From Hydraulically Fractured Wells in the Permian Region

The Permian Basin is the highest producing oil reservoir in the United States. Hydrocarbon extraction methods in this region are often associated with frac hits, or interwell communication events where an established well is affected by the pumping of fracture fluid into a new well. Our previous work revealed a geochemical signal indicating the presence of frac hits in the Permian Basin. We returned to this area with the goal of expanding our understanding of subsurface interactions common in this region. To do so, we collected produced water from 25 unique sites across the Permian Basin, 10 of which had previously been characterized during an active frac hit. For each sample, we measured the pH, alkalinity, geochemistry, microbial load, and microbial community composition. Permian Basin produced water is characterized by higher sulfate and lower total dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations compared to other regions. Interestingly, wells impacted by frac hits have a geochemical profile that resembles that of fracture fluid, with both lowered sulfate and lowered TDS concentrations compared to unaffected wells. Due to the year-long recovery window between sample collection periods, we anticipate that all our data will be characterized by the typical high sulfate, low TDS concentrations.

Hydraulic Performance of Funnel & Gate and Base Injection at the F-Area Seepage Basins

The SGW-Support Group Environmental Compliance and Area Completion Projects (EC&ACP) of Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) operates a funnel and gate (F&G) passive groundwater remediation system in conjunction with base injection to restore the quality of groundwater migrating from the F-Area seepage basins to Fourmile Branch. Groundwater levels were monitored biweekly and continuously over a 15-month period to study the aerial and temporal effect of operating the F&G and base injection remediation systems.

Integrated Molten Salt Reactor Modeling Capabilities in NEAMS Thermal Hydraulics Tools

The DOE Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program supports a full range of computational thermal fluids analysis capabilities and code developments for a broad range of advanced reactor concepts. The research and development approach under the thermal fluids technical area synergistically combines three length and time scales in a hierarchical multi-scale approach. To enable multi-scale thermal fluids capability using these codes, a key joint effort has been underway to develop an integrated system- and engineering-scale thermal fluids analysis capability, through integration of SAM and Pronghorn codes, both based on the MOOSE framework.

Development of Ionic Based Fluid to Improve Fluid Hydraulics in Enhanced Geothermal Systems

This research advances the field of geothermal energy by developing and evaluating novel fluid systems designed explicitly for high-temperature subsurface environments to enhance fracture flow distribution. The project integrates chemical synthesis, environmental assessment, rheological testing, microfluidic analysis, and reservoir-scale laboratory testing and analysis to identify optimal ionic and nonionic fluids for Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS).

SERGHEI (SERGHEI-SWE) v1.0: a performance-portable high-performance parallel-computing shallow-water solver for hydrology and environmental hydraulics

The Simulation EnviRonment for Geomorphology, Hydrodynamics, and Ecohydrology in Integrated form (SERGHEI) is a multi-dimensional, multi-domain, and multi-physics model framework for environmental and landscape simulation, designed with an outlook towards Earth system modelling. At the core of SERGHEI's innovation is its performance-portable high-performance parallel-computing (HPC) implementation, built from scratch on the Kokkos portability layer, allowing SERGHEI to be deployed, in a performance-portable fashion, in graphics processing unit (GPU)-based heterogeneous systems. In this work, we explore combinations of MPI and Kokkos using OpenMP and CUDA backends. In this contribution, we introduce the SERGHEI model framework and present with detail its first operational module for solving shallow-water equations (SERGHEI-SWE) and its HPC implementation. This module is designed to be applicable to hydrological and environmental problems including flooding and runoff generation, with an outlook towards Earth system modelling. Its applicability is demonstrated by testing several well-known benchmarks and large-scale problems, for which SERGHEI-SWE achieves excellent results for the different types of shallow-water problems. Finally, SERGHEI-SWE scalability and performance portability is demonstrated and evaluated on several TOP500 HPC systems, with very good scaling in the range of over 20 000 CPUs and up to 256 state-of-the art GPUs.

As-run thermal hydraulics analysis of the EPRI-1 Experiment

The EPRI-1 experiment was designed to irradiate various types of reactor pressure vessel steels at a temperature of 288°C (PLN-3934). The specimens were irradiated in an instrumented test train inside a pressurized water loop in the center lobe of the ATR during cycle 157C. Temperature was monitored using thermocouples placed at the top of the test train. Additional temperature indications were obtained by post-irradiation examination of melt wires placed within the test train and spanning the temperature range 239°C to 327°C. The purpose of this analysis is to calculate specimen temperature using measured data on reactor power and as-run calculations of heating rates of the test train. The accuracy of the model is assessed by comparing the measured and calculated in-pile tube inlet to outlet temperature difference, comparing the measured and calculated thermocouple temperatures, and comparing the calculated specimen temperature to the temperature range indicated by the melt wires.
