Problem of gas accretion on a gravitational center

A method of the approximated solution of the problem of accretion on a rapidly moving gravitational center is developed. This solution is obtained in the vicinity of the axis of symmetry in the region of the potential flow. The solution of the problem of stationary gas accretion on a moving gravitational center simulates the movement of a substance in interstellar space in the vicinity of a black hole. A detailed picture of gas accretion on a black hole is of interest in connection with the problem of observation of black holes.

Dimensions of the information transfer problem

Several facets of the information transfer problems in aviation are described. A general analysis of these problem are given and the implications of some proposed solutions discussed. It is concluded that information transfer problems are responsible for many potentially serious human errors in aviation operations.

Unigrid methods for boundary value problems with nonrectangular domains

Boundary value problems with nonrectangular domains were solved with unigrid methods. Unigrid was developed, its relationship to multigrid is described and some simple theory is presented. Its use is illustrated with a North Atlantic basin oceanographic model problem. It is demonstrated how unigrid (and, hence, multigrid) can be used efficiently with vector computers on problems with irregular domains.

Flight-deck automation - Promises and problems

The paper analyzes the role of human factors in flight-deck automation, identifies problem areas, and suggests design guidelines. Flight-deck automation using microprocessor technology and display systems improves performance and safety while leading to a decrease in size, cost, and power consumption. On the other hand negative factors such as failure of automatic equipment, automation-induced error compounded by crew error, crew error in equipment set-up, failure to heed automatic alarms, and loss of proficiency must also be taken into account. Among the problem areas discussed are automation of control tasks, monitoring of complex systems, psychosocial aspects of automation, and alerting and warning systems. Guidelines are suggested for designing, utilising, and improving control and monitoring systems. Investigation into flight-deck automation systems is important as the knowledge gained can be applied to other systems such as air traffic control and nuclear power generation, but the many problems encountered with automated systems need to be analyzed and overcome in future research.

Remarks on nonstandard least-squares problems

It is shown that after treating a least-squares problem in the standard fashion, the imposition of stochastic restrictions on certain parameters can be accomplished essentially by inverting a matrix of an order no larger than the total number of restricted parameters, and that generally there is an explicit term for correcting the unrestricted to the restricted solution. In addition, any known type of nonstandard least-squares adjustment problem can be reduced to an equivalent standard linear problem, that is, one in which there is exactly one observation per condition equation and in which the observations are not correlated.

Recent advances in reduction methods for nonlinear problems

Status and some recent developments in the application of reduction methods to nonlinear structural mechanics problems are summarized. The aspects of reduction methods discussed herein include: (1) selection of basis vectors in nonlinear static and dynamic problems, (2) application of reduction methods in nonlinear static analysis of structures subjected to prescribed edge displacements, and (3) use of reduction methods in conjunction with mixed finite element models. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of reduction methods in nonlinear problems. Also, a number of research areas which have high potential for application of reduction methods are identified.

A linear decomposition method for large optimization problems. Blueprint for development

A method is proposed for decomposing large optimization problems encountered in the design of engineering systems such as an aircraft into a number of smaller subproblems. The decomposition is achieved by organizing the problem and the subordinated subproblems in a tree hierarchy and optimizing each subsystem separately. Coupling of the subproblems is accounted for by subsequent optimization of the entire system based on sensitivities of the suboptimization problem solutions at each level of the tree to variables of the next higher level. A formalization of the procedure suitable for computer implementation is developed and the state of readiness of the implementation building blocks is reviewed showing that the ingredients for the development are on the shelf. The decomposition method is also shown to be compatible with the natural human organization of the design process of engineering systems. The method is also examined with respect to the trends in computer hardware and software progress to point out that its efficiency can be amplified by network computing using parallel processors.

Geometrically derived difference formulae for the numerical integration of trajectory problems

The term 'trajectory problem' is taken to include problems that can arise, for instance, in connection with contour plotting, or in the application of continuation methods, or during phase-plane analysis. Geometrical techniques are used to construct difference methods for these problems to produce in turn explicit and implicit circularly exact formulae. Based on these formulae, a predictor-corrector method is derived which, when compared with a closely related standard method, shows improved performance. It is found that this latter method produces spurious limit cycles, and this behavior is partly analyzed. Finally, a simple variable-step algorithm is constructed and tested.

Hybrid state vector methods for structural dynamic and aeroelastic boundary value problems

A computational technique is developed that is suitable for performing preliminary design aeroelastic and structural dynamic analyses of large aspect ratio lifting surfaces. The method proves to be quite general and can be adapted to solving various two point boundary value problems. The solution method, which is applicable to both fixed and rotating wing configurations, is based upon a formulation of the structural equilibrium equations in terms of a hybrid state vector containing generalized force and displacement variables. A mixed variational formulation is presented that conveniently yields a useful form for these state vector differential equations. Solutions to these equations are obtained by employing an integrating matrix method. The application of an integrating matrix provides a discretization of the differential equations that only requires solutions of standard linear matrix systems. It is demonstrated that matrix partitioning can be used to reduce the order of the required solutions. Results are presented for several example problems in structural dynamics and aeroelasticity to verify the technique and to demonstrate its use. These problems examine various types of loading and boundary conditions and include aeroelastic analyses of lifting surfaces constructed from anisotropic composite materials.

The crack problem for a nonhomogeneous plane

The plane elasticity problem for a nonhomogeneous medium containing a crack is considered. It is assumed that the Poisson's ratio of the medium is constant and the Young's modulus E varies exponentially with the coordinate parallel to the crack. First the half plane problem is formulated and the solution is given for arbitrary tractions along the boundary. Then the integral equation for the crack problem is derived. It is shown that the integral equation having the derivative of the crack surface displacement as the density function has a simple Cauchy type kernel. Hence, its solution and the stresses around the crack tips have the conventional square root singularity. The solution is given for various loading conditions. The results show that the effect of the Poisson's ratio and consequently that of the thickness constraint on the stress intensity factors are rather negligible.

Maintenance problems associated with the operation of the F402 /Pegasus/ engine in the AV-8A /Harrier/ aircraft

The U.S. Marine Corp (USMC) has been operating the only V/STOL attack aircraft in the western world since 1971. Some of the maintenance problems experienced are related to the unique V/STOL design criteria of the Pegasus engine. However, the major part of the required maintenance effort is found to involve the more conventional engine problems. A description of the aircraft engine is provided and the problems resulting from V/STOL design demands are examined. Attention is given to the fuel system control, the engine air bleed, foreign object damage to the hp compressor, and the engine exhaust system.

Acoustic transmission in lined flow ducts - A finite element eigenvalue problem

The problem of acoustical transmission in lined ducts with subsonic mean flow is of considerable practical interest in the context of fan noise attenuation in the ducted inlet regions of turbofan aircraft engines. If nonaxisymmetric liners are present, a loss of axial symmetry results, and the study of acoustic transmission involves the solution of a full two-dimensional eigenvalue problem. The reported investigation is concerned with such an eigenvalue problem. The employed method of solution is effectively a two-dimensional analog of an approach considered by Astley and Eversman (1979). The approach makes use of a Galerkin Finite Element Method whereby the weighting and basis functions are generated automatically by the discretization.

Experiences with explicit finite-difference schemes for complex fluid dynamics problems on STAR-100 and CYBER-203 computers

Several two- and three-dimensional external and internal flow problems solved on the STAR-100 and CYBER-203 vector processing computers are described. The flow field was described by the full Navier-Stokes equations which were then solved by explicit finite-difference algorithms. Problem results and computer system requirements are presented. Program organization and data base structure for three-dimensional computer codes which will eliminate or improve on page faulting, are discussed. Storage requirements for three-dimensional codes are reduced by calculating transformation metric data in each step. As a result, in-core grid points were increased in number by 50% to 150,000, with a 10% execution time increase. An assessment of current and future machine requirements shows that even on the CYBER-205 computer only a few problems can be solved realistically. Estimates reveal that the present situation is more storage limited than compute rate limited, but advancements in both storage and speed are essential to realistically calculate three-dimensional flow.

Solution of axisymmetric fluid structure interaction problems with NASTRAN

The solution of axisymmetric acoustic fluid structure interaction problems, employing the NASTRAN computer program is presented. A previously developed 3-D Cartesian Coordinates pressure element formulation is adapted especially for axisymmetric elements. Analogous to the 3-D Cartesian Coordinate predecessor, the fluid portion of the problem is modeled with finite elements wherein one of the displacement components serves as a dummy variable for the pressure unknowns. Two alternatives for implementation of the analogy are presented: (1) an approximate method by which dummy values of G, and nu are used to approximately invoke the analogy wherein the accuracy of the approximation is made as close as desired to the proper analogy within an arbitrary small parameter epsiton; (2) an exact method whereby the NASTRAN FORTRAN coding is slightly changed to invoke the analogy exactly. Comparison of the finite element solution to the exact solution to the same problem is given.

The crack problem in a specially orthotropic shell with double curvature

The crack problem of a shallow shell with two nonzero curvatures is considered. It is assumed that the crack lies in one of the principal planes of curvature and the shell is under Mode I loading condition. The material is assumed to be specially orthotropic. After giving the general formulation of the problem the asymptotic behavior of the stress state around the crack tip is examined. The analysis is based on Reissner's transverse shear theory. Thus, as in the bending of cracked plates, the asymptotic results are shown to be consistent with that obtained from the plane elasticity solution of crack problems. Rather extensive numerical results are obtained which show the effect of material orthotropy on the stress intensity factors in cylindrical and spherical shells and in shells with double curvature. Other results include the stress intensity factors in isotropic toroidal shells with positive or negative curvature ratio, the distribution of the membrane stress resultant outside the crack, and the influence of the material orthotropy on the angular distribution of the stresses around the crack tip.

On making large nonlinear problems small

Reduction methods for solving large-scale nonlinear problems are considered. Attention is given to: (1) the selection of basis vectors for steady-state problems; (2) the identification and determination of bifurcation and limit points, including tracing post-limit-point and post-bifurcation-point paths using reduction methods; (3) the application of reduction methods to nonlinear problems with prescribed nonzero values of the fundamental unknowns; and (4) the use of reduction methods in conjunction with multifield (mixed) finite element models. The effectiveness of using reduction methods is demonstrated on the basis of several numerical examples including two-dimensional steady conduction in a square plate with temperature dependent thermal conductivity and a shallow spherical cap subjected to a central-point load and a ring load.

Multi-grid solution of Neumann pressure problem for viscous flows using primitive variables

The multi-grid (MG) technique has been advanced for use with the Neumann boundary-value problem in clustered curvilinear orthogonal coordinates. This comprises an important step in the analysis of viscous flows using the velocity-pressure formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations. With successive over-relaxation (SOR) as the smoothing operator and with suitably formulated restriction and coarse-grid-correction operators, a 4-grid procedure enhances the efficiency of fine-grid solutions of the Neumann problem by a factor of 3 to 5, depending on the problem parameters. Thy influence of the smoothing operator is also examined by employing the alternating-direction implicit and the strongly implicit techniques instead of SOR.

Finite-element methods for steady solidification problems

Four Galerkin finite-element methods are tested for solving the free-boundary problem that describes steady solidification. The formulations differ in the solution method used to account for the unknown shape of the melt/solid interface, in the interphase condition (either balance of heat flux or equilibrium of temperature) distinguished for locating the interface, and in the technique used for solving the systems of algebraic equations that result from the finite-element approximations. Methods that use the melting point isotherm to locate the melt/solid interface are found more accurate and efficient than formulations based on the interfacial energy balance. Solution by a Galerkin-Newton algorithm of the free-boundary problem transformed to a fixed domain is most efficient when the field problem in each phase is made nonlinear by including radiation from the melt and solid to the surroundings.
