The mammalian response to lunar particulates.

The response of germfree mice to subcutaneous and intraperitoneal injection of aqueous suspensions of lunar fine material (LFM) was evaluated. Both uninjected mice and mice injected with dry heat sterilized LFM were included as controls. After injection, the majority of mice were subjected to serial sacrifice to assess the time course of the tissue response. A smaller group of animals were held for lifespan studies. The observations suggest that LFM is relatively insoluble in tissue and that, while acting as a low grade irritant, it has little tendency to evoke reactive fibrosis.

Investigation of mounting discrete chip components for hybrid microelectronic applications.

In the assembly of hybrid microcircuits, passive and active discrete chip components are attached by epoxy cements and by solders. This study was initiated to determine the integrity of such attachments. Alumina substrates were subjected to a group of thermal and mechanical test environments defined by test methods in MIL-STD-883. Lot samples of substrates with assembly variations were subjected to separately applied testing and to serial testing. These test methods were applied sequentially to the same lot of substrates. Epoxy cements were generally satisfactory with respect to separate tests, although sequential tests severely degraded epoxy bond strengths of all types. Bond strengths to unglazed substrates were slightly superior to those of the same components on glazed types. Solder joints were vulnerable to catastrophic failure in several environments, especially temperature cycling and thermal shock. Vibration and impact shock also produced solder joint failures.

Performance testing of a Transit generator at JPL.

A Transit type thermoelectric generator, serial number QM-III, assembled with lightweight Isotec type thermoelectric panels, has been placed on test at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In its exterior appearance and main constructive features, generator QM-III is similar to the generator which was flown on the Transit satellite, launched into circular polar orbit on Sept. 2, 1972. The main difference between the flight generator and QM-III is that the flight hardware is heated by radioisotope decay, while QM-III is an ETG and is assembled with three different types of thermoelectric panels. The paper describes the generator and test equipment used and presents the results of the tests performed to date.

A variable-data-rate, multimode quadriphase modem.

This paper describes the design and performance of a highly versatile modulator and demodulator recently developed to facilitate the evaluation of various digital communications links. The modem is capable of either PSK or QPSK operation and can accommodate a very wide range of continuously tunable data rates (1 kbps to 30 Mbps in each of two channels). In the QPSK mode, operation is possible using either a single serial data stream (single channel operation) or using two mutually independent, unrelated, and asynchronous data streams (dual-channel operation). Integrate and dump detectors are used at the demodulator for regeneration of the data stream(s). Measurements indicate that the performance of the overall system (including the bit detectors) is within 2 dB of the theoretically optimum performance of either PSK or QPSK at any rate within the range of rates provided by the modem, and is within 1 dB of theoretical over most of the range of rates.

A parallel variable metric optimization algorithm

An algorithm, designed to exploit the parallel computing or vector streaming (pipeline) capabilities of computers is presented. When p is the degree of parallelism, then one cycle of the parallel variable metric algorithm is defined as follows: first, the function and its gradient are computed in parallel at p different values of the independent variable; then the metric is modified by p rank-one corrections; and finally, a single univariant minimization is carried out in the Newton-like direction. Several properties of this algorithm are established. The convergence of the iterates to the solution is proved for a quadratic functional on a real separable Hilbert space. For a finite-dimensional space the convergence is in one cycle when p equals the dimension of the space. Results of numerical experiments indicate that the new algorithm will exploit parallel or pipeline computing capabilities to effect faster convergence than serial techniques.

The vestibular system of the owl

Five owls were given vestibular examinations, and two of them were sacrificed to provide serial histological sections of the temporal bones. The owls exhibited a curious variability in the postrotatory head nystagmus following abrupt deceleration; sometimes a brisk nystagnus with direction opposite to that appropriate to the stimulus would occur promptly after deceleration. It was found also that owls can exhibit a remarkable head stability during angular movement of the body about any axis passing through the skull. The vestibular apparatus in the owl is larger than in man, and a prominent crista neglecta is present. The tectorial membrane, the cupula, and the otolithic membranes of the utricle, saccule, and lagena are all attached to surfaces in addition to the surfaces hearing hair cells. These attachments are very substantial in the utricular otolithic membrane and in the cupula.

Data bus system development program

Two data bus systems were designed fabricated, Data Bus System I and Data Bus System II. The technical features of the delivered hardware include the following: (1) 5 MHz selfclocking data bus; (2) bidirectional communications utilizing Manchester Code at data rates in excess of 20,000 words per second; (3) utilization of MSI COS/MOS technology (4) probability of accepting an erroneous data bit less than 1 in 10 to the 25th power (5) low power consumption (50 to 1 reduction in quiescent current over P/MOS) (6) compatibility with projected high density packaging. Three distinct types of data bus remote terminals were developed: the subsystem interface unit, the combination of an electronic interface unit and a standard interface unit-serial, and an SIU/Preprocessor.

Vectorization on the star computer of several numerical methods for a fluid flow problem

A reexamination of some numerical methods is considered in light of the new class of computers which use vector streaming to achieve high computation rates. A study has been made of the effect on the relative efficiency of several numerical methods applied to a particular fluid flow problem when they are implemented on a vector computer. The method of Brailovskaya, the alternating direction implicit method, a fully implicit method, and a new method called partial implicitization have been applied to the problem of determining the steady state solution of the two-dimensional flow of a viscous imcompressible fluid in a square cavity driven by a sliding wall. Results are obtained for three mesh sizes and a comparison is made of the methods for serial computation.

Implementation of ILLIAC 4 algorithms for multispectral image interpretation

Research has focused on the design and partial implementation of a comprehensive ILLIAC software system for computer-assisted interpretation of multispectral earth resources data such as that now collected by the Earth Resources Technology Satellite. Research suggests generally that the ILLIAC 4 should be as much as two orders of magnitude more cost effective than serial processing computers for digital interpretation of ERTS imagery via multivariate statistical classification techniques. The potential of the ARPA Network as a mechanism for interfacing geographically-dispersed users to an ILLIAC 4 image processing facility is discussed.

Advances in measuring techniques for turbine cooling test rigs - Status report

Instrumentation development pertaining to turbine cooling research has resulted in the design and testing of several new systems. Pressure measurements on rotating components are being made with a rotating system incorporating ten miniature transducers and a slip-ring assembly. The system has been tested successfully up to speeds of 9000 rpm. An advanced system development combining pressure transducer and thermocouple signals is also underway. Thermocouple measurements on rotating components are transferred off the shaft by a 72-channel rotating data system. Thermocouple data channels are electronically processed on board and then removed from the shaft in the form of a digital serial train by one winding of a rotary transformer.

Command and data handling for Atmosphere Explorer satellite

The command and data-handling subsystem of the Atmosphere Explorer satellite provides the necessary controls for the instrumentation and telemetry, and also controls the satellite attitude and trajectory. The subsystem executes all command information within the spacecraft, either in real time (as received over the S-band command transmission link) or remote from the command site (as required by the orbit operations schedule). Power consumption in the spacecraft is optimized by suitable application and removal of power to various instruments; additional functions include control of magnetic torquers and of the orbit-adjust propulsion subsystem. Telemetry data from instruments and the spacecraft equipment are formatted into a single serial bit stream. Attention is given to command types, command formats, decoder operation, and command processing functions.

Yield analysis of large capacity magnetic bubble circuits with redundancy design

The fabrication yield of an on-chip modifiable redundant circuit design for a 100M bit serial shift register is evaluated. The yield model is a redundancy design in which there is a primary loop and a set of secondary loops which can be enabled/disabled without introducing blanks to the data stream. This function has a finite yield, the loop-modification yield factor, which must be greater than 0.9 to make the system more economical than the simple nonredundant design. It is further established that small loop capacities greatly degrade the yield because of the effect of the modification yield factor, while large loop capacities degrade the yield because of defects in the operating area. As the modification yield increases the optimum loop capacity decreases. An optimum value for the number of redundant loops exists for each loop capacity. Other factors that affect the yield are the garnet film and the processed circuit.

Airoscope command system

A PCM telemetry command system is presented having a capacity of 256 unique commands, an end-to-end actuation time of less than 250 milliseconds, and an address plus complementary command code to provide security against the acceptance of anything but intended commands. The system consists of a ground-based encoder and a balloon-borne decoder, both built using low-current drain, high reliability CMOS logic elements. Commands are normally issued by a simple switch closure to +5VDC on the appropriate input line, however as a backup mode, the 8-bit command may be entered manually on 8 toggle switches and executed via a SEND button. In any case, the command is then serialized into a PCM bit stream and sent via a P-Band radio link to the DECODER aloft. All 256 outputs from the DECODER are buffered through drivers and thus may be used to drive CMOS, TTL, or DTL logic.

Shuttle extravehicular activity signal processor pulse amplitude modulation decommutator

To provide data with long-term stability and accuracy, the pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) decommutator was synchronized to the PAM-return to zero wavetrain, and each channel was sampled with a common sample and hold circuit and digitized sequentially. The digital value of each channel was then scaled by the digital value of the calibration channels. The corrected digital value of each channel was stored for one complete frame and then transferred to the multiplexer-demultiplexer at a high rate in one block of serial digital data. A test model was built to demonstrate this design approach taken for the PAM decom and performance data was provided. The accuracies obtained with various signal to noise ratios are shown.

Digital transmitter for data bus communications system

An improved digital transmitter for transmitting serial pulse code modulation (pcm) data at high bit rates over a transmission line is disclosed. When not transmitting, the transmitter features a high output impedance which prevents the transmitter from loading the transmission line. The pcm input is supplied to a logic control circuit which produces two discrete logic level signals which are supplied to an amplifier. The amplifier, which is transformer coupled to the output isolation circuitry, converts the discrete logic level signals to two high current level, ground isolated signals in the secondary windings of the coupling transformer. The latter signals are employed as inputs to the isolation circuitry which includes two series transistor pairs operating into a hybrid transformer functioning to isolate the transmitter circuitry from the transmission line.

Signal processing and display interface studies

Signal processing equipment specifications, operating and test procedures, and systems design and engineering are described. Five subdivisions of the overall circuitry are treated: (1) the spectrum analyzer; (2) the spectrum integrator; (3) the velocity discriminator; (4) the display interface; and (5) the formatter. They function in series: (1) first in analog form to provide frequency resolution, (2) then in digital form to achieve signal to noise improvement (video integration) and frequency discrimination, and (3) finally in analog form again for the purpose of real-time display of the significant velocity data. The formatter collects binary data from various points in the processor and provides a serial output for bi-phase recording. Block diagrams are used to illustrate the system.

A multichannel biotelemetry transmitter utilizing a PCM subcarrier

Making use of the currently available integrated circuits, a miniature PCM telemetry system operating from one miniature 9-volt battery and drawing less than 5 milliamps has been constructed. The use of this PCM telemetry signal not only provides accurate data transmission, but requires a minimum of RF bandwidth. The serial format that results from multiplexing the input data allows the use of a single channel recorder with its cost savings over a multichannel tape recorder. An additional benefit of the PCM encoding is that the data is in digital format and is directly suitable for computer use.
