Presentation of updated cost and performance results for coal and biomass co-firing in a pulverized coal power plant both with and without CO2 Capture at the Clearwater Clean Energy Conference. Update includes a 100% biomass fired case with and without capture.
This tutorial will highlight the most recent efforts from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to track solar photovoltaic (PV) technology trends and manufacturing costs, project levelized cost of electricity (LCOE), and project levelized cost of solar plus storage (LCOSS) for systems across the globe. We will begin with an overview of the global PV supply chain and 2021 benchmark input data for NREL's crystalline silicon (c-Si) and thin film PV module manufacturing cost models. The framework that we follow and will review during this tutorial provides a methodology to prepare bottom-up manufacturing cost models including the items within the U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). For the polysilicon, wafer, cell conversion, and module assembly steps of the c-Si supply chain, and for thin film modules, we will review input data and methods useful for calculating the costs of goods sold (COGS); research and development (R&D) expenses; and sales, general, and business administration (S, G, &A) expenses. This 2021 benchmark analysis is compiled for state-of-the-art c-Si and thin film module manufacturing. We will also review methods for our 2021 system benchmark costs calculations and LCOE technoeconomic analysis of PV systems and solar plus storage systems. Next generation technologies that lower PV manufacturing and installation costs, reduce operations and maintenance (O&M) expenses, and improve system energy yield will also be highlighted. Techniques for comparing LCOE performance will also be reviewed. We look forward to sharing NREL's extensive work in these areas and discussing ideas for future directions.

This poster presentation evaluates the cost of capturing CO2 from a 400,000 air dried tonne (adt)/year pulp production plant, using Shell’s CANSOLV post-combustion capture process. There are five steps in a pulp/paper process: wood preparation, pulping, chemical recovery, bleaching and papermaking. There are three sources of CO2: combustion of waste wood in the wood-preparation step; combustion of black liquor, a product of pulping; and combustion of natural gas coupled with CO2 generated from calcination of limestone in the lime kiln used in chemical recovery. Standalone (pulp only) and integrated (pulp + paper) mills are modeled. The base case results and sensitivity analyses are displayed.
This presentation develops an understanding of the potential of coupling solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology in hybrid carbon conversion (HCC) configurations from a cost and performance perspective.
This poster presents the development of isotherm and contactor models for a tetraamine MOF for CO2 capture from NGCC flue gas sources. It presents results for development of an isotherm model for a tetraamine MOF, validation of a fixed bed model to experimental fixed bed breakthrough data, and optimization of a fixed bed TSA process and moving bed TSA process for CO2 capture from a NGCC flue gas source.
This poster contains preliminary results for an ongoing analysis of modeling and optimization of an NGCC plant with a solvent-based CO2 capture system with high levels of CO2 capture – up to and beyond net-zero emissions. The work was performed to understand the incremental cost of high capture in order to compare with direct-air capture and other net-negative technologies, as well as to understand optimal operation and design of the CCS unit to achieve high capture with minimal increase in cost.
The International Energy Agency PVPS Task 13 has assembled an international team of photovoltaic (PV) researchers from government labs, academia, and industry to study the specific application of bifacial PV modules deployed on tracking systems. This configuration is of particular interest as it has been identified as the PV system design with the lowest Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) for over 90% of the world [1]. As such, much research, development, and commercial activity are focused on further optimizing this system design for different regions and markets, including field deployment and advanced modeling activities. Despite these efforts, many challenges remain to overcome with this system design. This conference paper will report on several areas the team is working on as part of this project. The first part of this study focuses on extensive interviews with PV tracker companies (we have identified 35) and customers worldwide to identify emerging technology trends, design diversity, market environments, and the reliability and performance of these systems. We will provide a market summary of technologies such as advanced tracking algorithms, methods for dealing with topography within the PV plant, different system configurations and layouts, backside irradiance optimization from albedo enhancement, and ground sculpting. We will also review dual-use applications of tracked bifacial systems, such as Agrivoltaics and Building-Integrated PV. These interviews are underway now, and we will be able to report our initial findings at the conference. The second part of the study focuses on summarizing performance monitoring and evaluation methods, with particular attention to capacity and acceptance testing for such systems. The third part of the study reviews performance modeling and yield assessment methods for these tracked bifacial PV systems. The final part of the study covers reliability and operations, and maintenance data from these systems.

Electric utilities and large industrial/commercial customers, which integrate multi-MW multi-string energy storage systems (ESS), are typically at a significant risk of string failure. This results in loss of system performance and capacity. In order to evaluate the accurate costs and benefits associated with a particular battery system, it is essential to incorporate the costs associated with battery string failure and, as a result, reduced capacity. This report analyzes how the economic losses can be estimated based on market rules and ESS availability. A framework for calculation of economic losses is developed and implemented with an illustrative string failure case for Independent System Operator (ISO-NE) forward capacity market. Further scenarios and case studies are analyzed by varying the probability of string failure as well as the capacity bid into the market. These scenarios are used to assess the variability of economic losses and the impact of string failure on final realized benefits from the battery's market participation.
