Collective Neutrino Oscillations and Heavy-element Nucleosynthesis in Supernovae: Exploring Potential Effects of Many-body Neutrino Correlations

In high-energy astrophysical processes involving compact objects, such as core-collapse supernovae or binary neutron star mergers, neutrinos play an important role in the synthesis of nuclides. Neutrinos in these environments can experience collective flavor oscillations driven by neutrino–neutrino interactions, including coherent forward scattering and incoherent (collisional) effects. Recently, there has been interest in exploring potential novel behaviors in collective oscillations of neutrinos by going beyond the one-particle effective or "mean-field" treatments. Here, we seek to explore implications of collective neutrino oscillations, in the mean-field treatment and beyond, for the nucleosynthesis yields in supernova environments with different astrophysical conditions and neutrino inputs. We find that collective oscillations can impact the operation of the νp-process and r-process nucleosynthesis in supernovae. The potential impact is particularly strong in high-entropy, proton-rich conditions, where we find that neutrino interactions can nudge an initial νp-process neutron-rich, resulting in a unique combination of proton-rich low-mass nuclei as well as neutron-rich high-mass nuclei. We describe this neutrino-induced neutron-capture process as the "νi-process." In addition, nontrivial quantum correlations among neutrinos, if present significantly, could lead to different nuclide yields compared to the corresponding mean-field oscillation treatments, by virtue of modifying the evolution of the relevant one-body neutrino observables.

Ab Initio Many Body Quantum Embedding and Local Correlation in Crystalline Materials using Interpolative Separable Density Fitting

We present an efficient implementation of ab initio many-body quantum embedding and local correlation methods for infinite periodic systems through translational symmetry adapted interpolative separable density fitting, an approach which reduces the scaling of the calculations to only linear with the number of k-points. Employing this methodology, we compute correlated ground-state coupled cluster energies within density matrix embedding and local natural orbital correlation frameworks for both weakly and strongly correlated solids, using up to 1000 k-points. By extrapolating the local correlation domains and k-point sampling we further obtain estimates of the full coupled cluster with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples ground-state energies in the thermodynamic limit.

The connectome of the adult Drosophila mushroom body provides insights into function

Making inferences about the computations performed by neuronal circuits from synapse-level connectivity maps is an emerging opportunity in neuroscience. The mushroom body (MB) is well positioned for developing and testing such an approach due to its conserved neuronal architecture, recently completed dense connectome, and extensive prior experimental studies of its roles in learning, memory, and activity regulation. Here, we identify new components of the MB circuit in Drosophila , including extensive visual input and MB output neurons (MBONs) with direct connections to descending neurons. We find unexpected structure in sensory inputs, in the transfer of information about different sensory modalities to MBONs, and in the modulation of that transfer by dopaminergic neurons (DANs). We provide insights into the circuitry used to integrate MB outputs, connectivity between the MB and the central complex and inputs to DANs, including feedback from MBONs. Our results provide a foundation for further theoretical and experimental work.

System and method for portable multi-band black body simulator

The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for simulating a black body spectrum. The apparatus makes use of a broadband light source and a light guide configured to receive light generated by the light source and to generate first and second optical signals. A first signal processing subsystem may be used to enable adjustment of both a signal spectrum and an intensity of the first optical signal. A second signal processing subsystem may be used to enable adjustment of both a signal spectrum and an intensity of the second optical signal. A beam cube may be used to combine the first and second optical signals to produce a final light output signal having a desired signal spectrum and a desired intensity.

Calculation of the Heat Transfer Coefficient in the Outer Body for a Rotational Detonation

Unsteady heat transfer characterization on the combustion surfaces of Rotational Detonation Engines (RDE) is not well understood. It is generally thought that the complex nature of the unsteady, reacting, compressible fluid flow inside the combustion anulus of the RDE causes the convective heat transfer coefficient to be significantly higher than it is in other applications. Empirical models that have been used to analyze this strictly apply to steady flows where dimensionless groups can be employed. The reacting flow fields that are characteristic of RDEs are inherently compressible, three dimensional, unsteady, and turbulent, having properties that change by orders of magnitude throughout the flow field. They will therefore contain multiple length scales and time scales operating everywhere in the flow during all times. Because of this it is not likely that the RDE flow fields will lend themselves to explanation using simple dimensionless parameters. The dimensionless groups have meaning only in situations where length scales and time scales are singular and well defined. In spite of this it may be possible to get a relatively good idea of what the convection heat transfer coefficient is. In this work a numerical study is performed where the inside wall surface temperature distribution in the RDE outer body is systematically changed over a given range that would be characteristic of the start-up flows inside an RDE. For each case, temperature distributions inside the outer containment wall of the RDE was calculated and compared with experimental data. The closet match can then be used to directly calculate the convection heat transfer coefficient on the inside surface of the RDE.

Occupant thermal comfort inference using body shape information

Occupant thermal comfort may be inferred and improved using body shape information. Height, weight, and shoulder circumference of an occupant of a room may be obtained using a depth sensor. A model may be utilized that is trained on a dataset including information reflecting of occupant comfort within the room versus temperature, the model receiving, as inputs, the height, the weight, and the shoulder circumference of the occupant and environmental information and outputting a comfort class. A temperature set-point for is identified which the room occupant is identified by the model as having the comfort class being indicative of user comfort. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) controls are adjusted for the room to the identified temperature set-point.

Search for Lepton Flavor Violation in Two Body Muon and Pion Decay at Rest

The ability of the Mu2e experiment to probe, or discover beyond the Standard Model physics in direct Charged Lepton Flavor Violation $\mu^+$ and $\pi^+$ decay modes is estimated. These direct modes are searched for simultaneously with proposed Mu2e detector validation runs, and are complementary to the Mu2e main search goal, an indirect search for $\mu^- \to e^-$ conversion at the sensitivity level of $\sim 10^{-17}$. The $\mu^+$ validation run will operate at 50% nominal magnetic field and reduced proton beam intensity to less than 1/100th nominal, in order to observe the e+ spectrum from $\mu^+$ decay, at and below the Michel edge Ee . 53 MeV. The $\pi^+$ validation run, based on measuring the mono-energetic e+ emission in the decay $\pi^+ \to e+\nu$, at 76% of nominal magnetic field and reduced beam intensity less than 1/5th nominal. Both of these runs can be used to fix the momentum scale for the Mu2e conversion search. In addition the muon validation dataset can be used to correct for systematic errors in the detector response by mapping the well known to O(\u03B13) corrected theoretical Michel spectrum, to the observed spectrum. One direct search is for two-body Charged Lepton Flavor Violation $\mu^+ \to e^+X$ decay, where $X$ is a light new physics particle. This allows Mu2e to explore well motivated models including axion like particles with flavor violating couplings and massive $Z^0$ bosons with more sensitivity then present astrophysical and laboratory constraints. In two weeks of data-taking, Mu2e can achieve direct mode 90% confidence level branching ratio limits of $10^{-7}$ over the mass range $20 \le m_X \le 50$ MeV, improving the current experimental limit at $10^{-5}$ by two orders of magnitude. In the mass range $m_X \le 20$ MeV, assuming systematic error corrections can be made by correcting the Monte Carlo mapping, the achievable search sensitivity is found to be $2.3\times 10^{-7}$ for $m_X =0$, an order of magnitude improvement over the current best limit at $2.6\times 10^{-6}$, when assuming $V+A$ or isotropic coupling. The $\pi^+$ validation run, allows searching for $\pi^+ \to e^+N$ decay, where $N$ is a heavy neutral lepton such as a heavy sterile neutrino, in the mass region $20 \le m_N \le 65$ MeV. A branching ratio limit at 90% confidence level of $3\times 10^{-8}$ can be achieved in two weeks, an improvement of the current search sensitivity limit by an order of magnitude.

One and Two-Body Current Contributions to Lepton-Nucleus Scattering

Modeling lepton-nucleus scattering with the accuracy required to extract neutrino-oscillation parameters from long- and short-baseline experiments necessitates retaining most quantum-mechanical effects. One such effect is the interference between one- and two-body current operators in the transition currents, which has been known to enhance the cross-sections, especially in transverse kinematics. In this work, we incorporate such interference in the spectral function formalism, which combines relativistic currents and kinematics with an accurate description of the initial target state. Our analysis of lepton-scattering off $^{12}$C demonstrates that interference effects appreciably enhance the transverse electromagnetic response functions and the flux-folded neutrino-nucleus cross section, in both cases, improving the agreement with experimental data. We discuss the impact on the neutrino-oscillation program and the determination of nucleon axial form factors.

The BRIAR Dataset: A Comprehensive Whole-Body Biometric Recognition Benchmark at Extreme Distances and Altitudes (Collections 1-6)

The Biometric Recognition and Identification at Altitude and Range (BRIAR) program aims to extend biometric capabilities into severe operational environments characterized by long ranges, atmospheric turbulence, and elevated viewpoints. This paper introduces the program’s two final government collections expanding activities, environments, viewpoints, distances, and modalities, and adding appearance and environmental stressors. We refine curation/evaluation and include sequestered subsets to support controlled assessments. These updates strengthen BRIAR as a comprehensive resource for whole-body, face, and gait recognition at altitude and range, while maintaining privacy-first practices.
