Site-wide water balance suggests that CTs across eight LANL facilities use about 58% of the total potable water bought from LAC (271 MGY). It is vital to make a conscious and calculated effort to reduce the dependence on external water supplies, and potable water. We need to strive to increase CoCs at CTs and improve water efficiency to reduce water consumption.

While regulators, the scientific community, and MSR developers still lack access to literature data on the thermal properties of clean fuel salts, even less information is available on the properties of fuel salts containing impurities. It is essential to understand, benchmark, and predict crucial data on the changes in thermal properties of fuel salt systems due to impurities arising from moisture, corrosion, and reactor operation (i.e., fission products). This research focuses on two actinide fuel salts (1) to investigate a worst-case scenario buildup of actinide fission product in a NaCl-UCl3 eutectic fuel salt and (2) to investigate NaCl-PuCl3 eutectic salt after 1000 hours of operation in a natural circulation flow loop flow to determine if corrosion or atmospheric (moisture/oxygen) products are present. For the first salt, a conservative assumption or worst-case scenario, for fission product buildup in a fuel salt was investigated by adding PuCl3 to eutectic 67 mol% NaCl – 33 mol% UCl3 salt resulting in a ternary salt having a composition of 61 mol% NaCl – 30 mol% UCl3 – 9mol% PuCl3. Addition of PuCl3 to eutectic NaCl-UCl3 resulted in a ternary salt that had a higher melting temperature than either the NaCl-PuCl3 or NaCl-UCl3 binary eutectic mixture. Addition of PuCl3 also resulted in an increase in density which was expected. The second salt was extracted from a micro loop. The composition of the fuel (primary) salt prior to flow loop operations was determined to be 64 mol% NaCl – 36 mol% PuCl3, however, the post-flow loop salt showed increased levels of MgCl2 and NaCl changing the salt composition to 10 mol% MgCl2 – 63mol% NaCl – 26mol% PuCl3) indicating the primary salt interacted with the rinse salt. Analysis of the post flow loop salt detected low concentrations of Al, Ni, Co, Nb, and Zr, most likely corrosion products from the flow loop material of construction. Contamination of the fuel salt (with the rinse salt NaCl-MgCl2) decreased the density by approximately 10% and reduced the onset of melting temperature by 50 °C, from 451 °C to approximately 400 °C. Results from the fission product simulated salt (61 mol% NaCl – 30 mol% UCl3 – 9mol% PuCl3) and the corrosion product salt (10 mol% MgCl2 – 63mol% NaCl – 26mol% PuCl3) will be included in two separate manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
Iron is a promising candidate for a cost-effective anode for large-scale energy storage systems due to its natural abundance and well-established mass production. Recently, Fe-ion batteries (FeIBs) that use ferrous ions as the charge carrier have emerged as a potential storage solution. The electrolytes in FeIBs are necessarily acidic to render the ferrous ions more anodically stable, allowing a wide operation voltage window. However, the iron anode suffers severe hydrogen evolution reaction with a low Coulombic efficiency (CE) in an acidic environment, shortening the battery cycle life. Herein, a hybrid aqueous electrolyte that forms a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the Fe anode surface is introduced. The electrolyte mainly comprises FeCl 2 and ZnCl 2 as cosalts, where the Zn-Cl anionic complex species of the concentrated ZnCl 2 allows dimethyl carbonate (DMC) to be miscible with the aqueous ferrous electrolyte. SEI derived from DMC's decomposition passivates the iron surface, which leads to an average CE of 98.3% and much-improved cycling stability. As a result, this advancement shows the promise of efficient and durable FeIBs.
Self-assembly affords simpler synthetic routes to heterostructures compared with manual layer-by-layer stacking, yet controlling interlayer twist angles in a bulk solid remains an outstanding challenge. We report two new single-crystal heterostructures: (Sn 2 Cl 2 )(CYS) 2 SnCl 4 (CYS = + NH 3 (CH 2 ) 2 S – ; Sn_CYS) and (Sn 2 Cl 2 )(SeCYS) 2 SnCl 4 (SeCYS = + NH 3 (CH 2 ) 2 Se – ; Sn_SeCYS) synthesized in solution, with alternating perovskite and intergrowth layers. Notably, compared to the recently reported lead analog, (Pb 2 Cl 2 )(CYS) 2 PbCl 4 (Pb_CYS), the tin heterostructures feature a twist between the perovskite and intergrowth layers. We trace this twist to local distortions at the Sn centers, which change the interfacial lattice-matching requirements compared to those of the Pb analog. Electronic band structure calculations show that the striking differences in the relative energies of perovskite- and intergrowth-derived bands in Sn_CYS and Pb_CYS arise from structural and not compositional differences. The structural anisotropy of Sn_CYS is also reflected in a large in-plane photoluminescence linear anisotropy ratio. Interfacial strain further affords differential incorporation of Pb into the perovskite and intergrowth layers of the Sn heterostructures, resulting in redshifted optical absorption onsets. Thus, we posit that local structural distortions may be exploited to manipulate the twist angle and interfacial strain in bulk heterostructures, providing a new handle for tuning the band alignments of bulk quantum-well electronic structures.
One of the critical challenges for latent heat thermal energy storage systems in concentrating solar power applications is corrosion of metallic alloys as containment and heat transfer fluid tube materials in corrosive salts at high temperatures. In this study, the effects of MgCl 2 on the corrosion of stainless steel 304, Inconel 625, and Haynes 230 alloys were investigated through embedded metal samples in the graphite foam/MgCl 2 storage medium. Four experimental testing modules were fabricated, and experimental tests were conducted under controlled environment by heating the testing modules to and keeping them at 750 °C for 100, 200, 500, and 1000 h. The estimated corrosion rates based on the weight losses for stainless steel 304, Inconel 625, and Haynes 230 were 94, 9, and 8 μm/year, respectively. The fitted equations for the loss of the thickness as functions of the exposure time show that the corrosion rates decrease with the exposure time. Additionally, the results on the corrosion zones or depths and chromium segregation ranges of the experimental samples are also presented.
