Satellite measurement capabilities for environmental and resource observations

The report summarizes the measurement needs of the major earth applications disciplines which have been culled from a wide range of documental sources. These measurement needs are matched against present or funded-for-launch space-borne measurement capabilities. A brief prognosis of this program's abilities to eliminate or reduce the voids and gaps in performance between the measurement needs and the existing capability is included, based on the author's present understanding of technology.

Nimbus 6 satellite vs rawinsonde capabilities

The paper establishes rms errors in Nimbus 6 satellite data from discrepancies between satellite and rawinsonde data, compares rms errors in Nimbus 6 with those in rawinsonde data, and examines the capability of Nimbus 6 satellite data to depict such quantities as horizontal gradients of basic variables and computed variables such as vorticity and lapse rate of temperature. The capability of Nimbus 6 data is illustrated by comparisons of rms errors in computed variables obtained through a propagation-of-error method with average and near-extreme values of the variables obtained from two of NASA's Atmospheric Variability Experiments (AVE II and AVE IV). It is shown that the rms errors in Nimbus 6 basic variables (temperature, mixing ratio, geopotential height, and wind speed) are between 2 and 12 times larger than the corresponding errors in rawinsonde data. For all variables examined, the magnitude of the rms errors are smaller than the near-extreme values of the variables determined from AVE II and AVE IV data.

Capabilities and applications of a computer program system for dynamic loads analyses of flexible airplanes with active controls /DYLOFLEX/

This paper describes and illustrates the capabilities of the DYLOFLEX Computer Program System. DYLOFLEX is an integrated system of computer programs for calculating dynamic loads of flexible airplanes with active control systems. A brief discussion of the engineering formulation for each of the nine DYLOFLEX programs is described. The capabilities of the system are illustrated by the analyses of two example configurations.

Differential correction capability of the GTDS using TDRSS data

A differential correction (DC) capability was implemented in the Goddard Trajectory Determination System (GTDS) to process satellite tracking data acquired via the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TRDRSS). Configuration of the TDRSS is reviewed, observation modeling is presented, and major features of the capability are discussed. The following types of TDRSS data can be processed by GTDS: two way relay range and Doppler measurements, hybrid relay range and Doppler measurements, one way relay Doppler measurements, and differenced one way relay Doppler measurements. These data may be combined with conventional ground based direct tracking data. By using Bayesian weighted least squares techniques, the software allows the simultaneous determination of the trajectories of up to four different satellites - one user satellite and three relay satellites. In addition to satellite trajectories, the following parameters can be optionally solved: for drag coefficient, reflectivity of a satellite for solar radiation pressure, transponder delay, station position, and biases.

The very long baseline interferometry capability as well as the planned capability of the deep space network (DSN) are described. Major emphasis is placed on the following: VLBI development; operational VLBI for DSN calibration; and VLBI for spacecraft navigation.

Increased capability gas generator for Space Shuttle APU. Development/hot restart test report

The design, fabrication, and testing of an increased capability gas generator for use in space shuttles are described. Results show an unlimited hot restart capability in the range of feed pressures from 400 psi to 80 psi. Effects of vacuum on hot restart were not addressed, and only beginning-of-life bed conditions were tested. No starts with bubbles were performed. A minimum expected life of 35 hours or more is projected, and the design will maintain a surface temperature of 350 F or more.

Modular heat pipe radiators for enhanced Shuttle mission capabilities

Current heat pipe radiator technology is reviewed and the results from three state-of-the-art hardware programs are summarized. Heat pipe radiators are shown to be an improvement over all-fluid loop panels for long duration space missions, when micrometeoroid survivability is important. Finally, several heat pipe radiator design concepts are presented which would enhance Shuttle mission capabilities by either extending mission life and/or augmenting heat rejection capability.

Acoustic facilities for human factors research at NASA Langley Research Center: Description and operational capabilities

A number of facilities were developed which provide a unique test capability for psychoacoustics and related human factors research. The design philosophy, physical layouts, dimensions, construction features, operating capabilities, and example applications for these facilities are described. In the exterior effects room, human subjects are exposed to the types of noises that are experienced outdoors, and in the interior effects room, subjects are exposed to the types of noises and noise-induced vibrations that are experience indoors. Subjects are also exposed to noises in an echo-free environment in the anechoic listening room. An aircraft noise synthesis system, which simulates aircraft flyover noise at an observer position on the ground, is used in conjunction with these three rooms. The passenger ride quality apparatus, a device for studying passenger response to noise and vibration in aircraft, or in other vehicles, is described.

Second-generation X/S feedcone: Capabilities layout, and components

High power (20 kW) S and X-band transmitting systems were added to the Second Generation Common Aperture X/S Feedcone System to demonstrate X and S band uplink/downlink capabilities. Design considerations of new X band components, cone layout, and capabilities are discussed.

Systems test facilities existing capabilities compilation

Systems test facilities (STFS) to test total photovoltaic systems and their interfaces are described. The systems development (SD) plan is compilation of existing and planned STFs, as well as subsystem and key component testing facilities. It is recommended that the existing capabilities compilation is annually updated to provide and assessment of the STF activity and to disseminate STF capabilities, status and availability to the photovoltaics program.

Thermal capabilities and graphical output of PAFEC

The program for automatic finite element calculations (PAFEC) developed for the computation of heat transfer in structures is discussed. The passive and interactive graphics capabilities of the PAFEC system are presented and future developments are outlined. This finite element system is shown to have significant thermal capabilities in support of its general structures. The program offers the following types of analysis: interactive graphics; user defined program control steps; steady state, transient heat transfer; boundary element methods; linear static, stress and displacements; modes and frequencies calculations; direct dynamic time intergration; frequency response analysis; elastohydrodynamic lubrication; large deflection analysis, buckling; creep and plasticity analysis; and substructures analysis.

Capability of the manned maneuvering unit to support satellite servicing operations

Features, capabilities, and projected performances and missions of the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) are described. A zero gravity, autonomous, six degree of freedom mobility system using gaseous nitrogen for propulsion, the MMU is equipped with jets for attitude and rotational control, 24 thrusters total, with each providing 7.5 N thrust. The unit is controled from hand controllers used by the pilot, in addition to an automatic attitude control using outputs from a gyroscope pack in the control electronics assembly. EVA periods of 6 hrs are possible with the 150 kg MMU and its fuel complement of 12 kg of gaseous N. Refueling is allowed through an Orbiter interface at the same location the MMU is stowed. The MMU has a delta-V capability of 20 m/sec, with a thrust duration of 7085 N-sec, implying the EVA suit limit will be reached before propellant can be exhausted. The results of various mission simulations for the MMU are reported.

An integrated user-oriented laboratory for verification of digital flight control systems: Features and capabilities

A Digital Flight Control Systems Verification Laboratory (DFCSVL) has been established at NASA Ames Research Center. This report describes the major elements of the laboratory, the research activities that can be supported in the area of verification and validation of digital flight control systems (DFCS), and the operating scenarios within which these activities can be carried out. The DFCSVL consists of a palletized dual-dual flight-control system linked to a dedicated PDP-11/60 processor. Major software support programs are hosted in a remotely located UNIVAC 1100 accessible from the PDP-11/60 through a modem link. Important features of the DFCSVL include extensive hardware and software fault insertion capabilities, a real-time closed loop environment to exercise the DFCS, an integrated set of software verification tools, and a user-oriented interface to all the resources and capabilities.

Interactive capabilities: Between unacceptable and unnecessary

A very low cost interactive image analysis computer system suitable for use in education, research, or operational remote sensing applications system should be centered around a high quality image display through which the analyst can use photointerpretation skills to evaluate and alter computer mapping or classification calculations. The definition of acceptable capabilities for such a system must take into account the needs of the image analyst balanced with current state-of-the-art technology and cost. A range of acceptable capabilities is defined based primarily on image analysis requirements, but tempered occassionally by cost and technology constraints. Desirable parameters are also listed.

Capabilities, limitations, and use of BC SAT-R2 conference software

The computer software developed for the BC SAT-R2 Conference has certain capabilities and limitations which are described. Capabilities of each major program element are addressed with respect to providing the required functions for planning and output reporting. Limitations arise from the inability to exactly represent certain systems that may be examined. Expected use of the software package during the Conference is outlined.

SPAR improved structure/fluid dynamic analysis capability

The capability of analyzing a coupled dynamic system of flowing fluid and elastic structure was added to the SPAR computer code. A method, developed and adopted for use in SPAR utilizes the existing assumed stress hybrid plan element in SPAR. An operational mode was incorporated in SPAR which provides the capability for analyzing the flaw of a two dimensional, incompressible, viscous fluid within rigid boundaries. Equations were developed to provide for the eventual analysis of the interaction of such fluids with an elastic solid.

Spacelab - Subsystems performance capabilities

Spacelab, with its multiplicity of configuration options and associated subsystem capabilities provides the user with a unique set of environments and facilities to conduct scientific investigations in space. This paper provides an insight into the Spacelab resources and their efficient application to payloads and experiment integration for the manned and unmanned options. Subsystem capabilities and constraints for various types of missions and experiments are discussed in terms of structural support, power, thermal conditioning, pointing and stability, and command and data management.
