Typical uses of NASTRAN in a petrochemical industry

NASTRAN was principally used to perform failure analysis and redesign process equipment. It was also employed in the evaluation of vendor designs and proposed design modifications to existing process equipment. Stress analysis of forced draft fans, distillation trays, metal stacks, jacketed pipes, heat exchangers, large centrifugal fans, and agitator support structures are described.

Removing overcoatings from microcircuits

Silicone resin of elastomer overcoatings are removed more quickly from microcircuit chips with hot concentrated sulfuric acid. Process takes few minutes as compared to day or two, using commercial solvents based on toluene, xylene, and like. Overcoatings are removed to expose circuit for failure analysis.

JANTX1N3893 diode

Diodes manufactured by Siemens and Motorola were tested. Testing of Motorola diodes was stopped in all 3 groups because 50% failure-rate limit was reached. Siemens lot endured more testing in groups 1 and 2 and completed testing on group 3. Failure analysis was performed for group 2 testing.

JANTX1N5618 switching diode

Diodes tested were manufactured by Semtech and Micro Semiconductor. Semtech sample lots completed all three testings with only one catastrophic failure. All three Micro Semiconductor lots had several failure that were submitted for failure analysis.

An active nutation damper for spacecraft

An active nutation damping device, consisting of an angular accelerometer, a dc-motor-driven flywheel, and associated electronics, was developed for spacecraft use. This damping system was used on the LAGEOS spacecraft, launched May 4, 1976, to control nutation buildup during the long coast period (approximately 75 minutes) after the third stage separation. Of the many electrical and mechanical design choices involved, the use of an angular rather than linear accelerometer offers some advantages. There are some problems of adapting the angular accelerometer to spacecraft use. The damper package was evaluated and proven on a three-axis gas-bearing simulator that duplicated the LAGEOS spacecraft critical flight dynamics. A failure analysis of the damper assembly was performed.

Transistor screening evaluation SJ6708H

A manufacturer was contracted to screen 125 transistors capable of withstanding the high level inductive voltages obtained when switching inductive loads. Planned differences included a change in die bonding to comply with NASA's desire for hard solder die attachment which further necessitated a change in package to conform to the required die mounting system. Evaluation of the electrical performance and recommended changes were made during the preliminary build phase of the program. The following sections are outlined: (1) narrative outline; (2) customer data summary and X-ray reports; (3) device specification; (4) failure analysis reports; (5) test facilities list; and (6) test measurement data.

The Shock and Vibration Bulletin. Part 3: Structure Medium Interaction, Case Studies in Dynamics

Structure and medium interactions topics are addressed. Topics include: a failure analysis of underground concrete structures subjected to blast loadings, an optimization design procedure for concrete slabs, and a discussion of the transient response of a cylindrical shell submerged in a fluid. Case studies in dynamics are presented which include an examination of a shock isolation platform for a seasparrow launcher, a discussion of hydrofoil fatigue load environments, and an investigation of the dynamic characteristics of turbine generators and low tuned foundations.

Flexible materials technology

A survey of all presently defined or proposed large space systems indicated an ever increasing demand for flexible components and materials, primarily as a result of the widening disparity between the stowage space of launch vehicles and the size of advanced systems. Typical flexible components and material requirements were identified on the basis of recurrence and/or functional commonality. This was followed by the evaluation of candidate materials and the search for material capabilities which promise to satisfy the postulated requirements. Particular attention was placed on thin films, and on the requirements of deployable antennas. The assessment of the performance of specific materials was based primarily on the failure mode, derived from a detailed failure analysis. In view of extensive on going work on thermal and environmental degradation effects, prime emphasis was placed on the assessment of the performance loss by meteoroid damage. Quantitative data were generated for tension members and antenna reflector materials. A methodology was developed for the representation of the overall materials performance as related to systems service life. A number of promising new concepts for flexible materials were identified.

Selective Etching of Semiconductor Glassivation

Selective etching technique removes portions of glassivation on a semi-conductor die for failure analysis or repairs. A periodontal needle attached to a plastic syringe is moved by a microprobe. Syringe is filled with a glass etch. A drop of hexane and vacuum pump oil is placed on microcircuit die and hexane is allowed to evaporate leaving a thin film of oil. Microprobe brings needle into contact with area of die to be etched.

Automated mixed traffic transit vehicle microprocessor controller

An improved Automated Mixed Traffic Vehicle (AMTV) speed control system employing a microprocessor and transistor chopper motor current controller is described and its performance is presented in terms of velocity versus time curves. The on board computer hardware and software systems are described as is the software development system. All of the programming used in this controller was implemented using FORTRAN. This microprocessor controller made possible a number of safety features and improved the comfort associated with starting and shopping. In addition, most of the vehicle's performance characteristics can be altered by simple program parameter changes. A failure analysis of the microprocessor controller was generated and the results are included. Flow diagrams for the speed control algorithms and complete FORTRAN code listings are also included.

Graphite polyimide fabrication research for supersonic cruise aircraft

Advanced fabrication processes and adhesive bonding methods have been developed for the fabrication of full scale fiberglass-polyimide honeycomb stiffened HTS-1 graphite/PMR-15 polyimide panels that meet the design criteria for an upper wing panel of the NASA YF-12 aircraft. Detailed manufacturing, bonding, and autoclave cure procedures are presented. Nondestructive test methods including pulse echo and through-transmission ultrasonic C-scan and laser holography were developed to detect flaws in components and the completed panels. Panels were tested in shear at room temperature and 533 K (500 F) following a variety of thermal exposures to obtain load, deflection and failure analysis data.

Failure characteristics of graphite-epoxy structural components loaded in compression

Failure characteristics of compressively loaded graphite-epoxy components are described. Experimental results for both strength-critical laminates and structural components with postbuckling strength are presented. Effects of low speed impact damage and circular holes on compressive strength are discussed. Delamination and shear crippling failure mechanisms that limit the performance of strength-critical laminates are described. Transverse shear and skin-stiffener separation failure mechanisms that limit the performance of components with postbuckling strength are also described. The influence of matrix properties on compressive strength improvements for impact damaged laminates is discussed. Experimental data and results from a failure analysis for strength-critical laminates with cutouts are discussed and compared with impact damage results. Typical postbuckling test results are compared with analytical predictions.
