On the role of sea surface temperature gradients in forcing low-level winds and convergence in the tropics

The potential contribution of the SST gradient-driven flow to the low-level (p not less than 700 mb) convergence over tropical oceans is determined using a simple one-layer model of the trade cumulus boundary layer wherein surface temperature gradients are mixed vertically (consistent with the ECMWF analyzed data). The influence of the layers above 700 mb is intentionally suppressed. The results of the study demonstrate the importance of taking account of the fact that cumulonimbus convection takes a small but finite time to adjust to low-level convergence. Failure to consider this effect leads to unreasonably large equatorial convergence.

Accurate pressure gradient calculations in hydrostatic atmospheric models

A method for the accurate calculation of the horizontal pressure gradient acceleration in hydrostatic atmospheric models is presented which is especially useful in situations where the isothermal surfaces are not parallel to the vertical coordinate surfaces. The present method is shown to be exact if the potential temperature lapse rate is constant between the vertical pressure integration limits. The technique is applied to both the integration of the hydrostatic equation and the computation of the slope correction term in the horizontal pressure gradient. A fixed vertical grid and a dynamic grid defined by the significant levels in the vertical temperature distribution are employed.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the stability of stepwise pH gradients in continuous flow electrophoresis

Isoelectric focusing in the continuous flow mode can be more quickly and economically performed by admitting a stepwise pH gradient composed of simple buffers instead of uniform mixtures of synthetic carrier ampholytes. The time-consuming formation of the pH gradient by the electric field is thereby omitted. The stability of a three-step system with arginine - morpholinoethanesulfonic acid/glycylglycine - aspartic acid is analyzed theoretically by one-dimensional computer simulation as well as experimentally at various flow rates in a continuous flow apparatus. Excellent agreement between experimental and theoretical data was obtained. This metastable configuration was found to be suitable for focusing of proteins under continuous flow conditions. The influence of various combinations of electrolytes and membranes between electrophoresis chamber and electrode compartments is also discussed.

Internal temperature gradient of alloy semiconductor melts from interrupted growth experiments

Interrupted growth experiments on Hg(0.8)Cd(0.2)Se alloys were performed in an attempt to estimate the actual internal temperature gradient in the melt during directional solidification. The results have been analyzed in terms of a theoretical model which assumes an axial composition profile characteristic of diffusion controlled solute redistribution during growth. A comparison of the calculated and measured values suggests a reduction in the applied (empty furnace) temperature gradient by about a factor of three. Values of the interface segregation coefficient (k) determined from the phase diagram, predict values of solute concentration build up in the solid during growth interruptions which are inconsistent with measured results. It appears that the k values used tend to underestimate the actual k values for higher alloy compositions and overestimate k for the lower alloy compositions.

Three-dimensional shear-driven boundary layer flow with streamwise adverse pressure gradient

The effects of adverse pressure gradient on a three-dimensional turbulent boundary layer are studied in an axisymmetric forward-facing step geometry. Velocity measurements made using a three-component laser Doppler velocimeter include mean flow as well as Reynolds stresses and velocity triple-product correlations. Turbulent Prandtl mixing-lengths are extracted from the data, showing the effects of curvature. Streamwise pressure gradient was seen to alter streamwise velocity and Reynolds stress without significantly affecting transverse velocity and Reynolds stress. Transverse-strain was seen to have the effect of reducing the streamwise component of Reynolds stress.

Applying Thermal Gradients To Control Vibrations

Thermal actuators used to stabilize large structures. New damping concept calls for application of suitably timed and shaped thermal-gradient waveforms to generate expansions and contractions counteracting vibrations. Responding to processed signal from accelerometer, thermoelectric heat pumps apply thermal gradients producing expansions and contractions in upper and lower caps of cantilever beam. These expansions and contractions partly counteract vibrations sensed by accelerometer, thus contributing to damping.

Color gradients in the coma of P/Halley

Some important information relevant to the understanding of the gas/dust dynamics near the surface of a comet nucleus concerns knowledge of the grain composition and scattering properties as well as the particle size distribution of dust in the coma. Ground based measurements of light scattered from the dust comae can provide some information about the physical grain properties, in particular about the mean optically dominant grain size. Optical spectra of continua of nine comets presented by Jewitt and Meech, 1986, show that all of the scattered light is reddened with respect to the Sun. There is significant scatter in the amount of reddening seen for different comets. In the near IF regions, the reddening decreases until near 2 to 3 micrometers where the reflectivity is nearly neutral. It is of particular interest to see if there are any observable changes in the grain size distribution during outburst. Although no coma colar changes were observed during the Nov. 1985 outbursts, a color gradient within the coma has been observed in Halley. Radial color gradients in J, H, and K images of Halley as reported by Campins have not been observed by the author.

On conjugate gradient type methods and polynomial preconditioners for a class of complex non-Hermitian matrices

Conjugate gradient type methods are considered for the solution of large linear systems Ax = b with complex coefficient matrices of the type A = T + i(sigma)I where T is Hermitian and sigma, a real scalar. Three different conjugate gradient type approaches with iterates defined by a minimal residual property, a Galerkin type condition, and an Euclidian error minimization, respectively, are investigated. In particular, numerically stable implementations based on the ideas behind Paige and Saunder's SYMMLQ and MINRES for real symmetric matrices are proposed. Error bounds for all three methods are derived. It is shown how the special shift structure of A can be preserved by using polynomial preconditioning. Results on the optimal choice of the polynomial preconditioner are given. Also, some numerical experiments for matrices arising from finite difference approximations to the complex Helmholtz equation are reported.

The effects of temperature gradient and growth rate on the morphology and fatigue properties of MAR-M246(Hf)

MAR-M246(Hf) is a nickel based superalloy used in the turbopump blades of the Space Shuttle main engines. The effects are considered of temperature gradient (G) and growth rate (R) on the microstructure and fatigue properties of this superalloy. The primary dendrite arm spacings were found to be inversely proportional to both temperature gradient and growth rate. Carbide and gamma - gamma prime morphology trends were related to G/R ratios. Weibull analysis of fatigue results shows the characteristic life to be larger by a factor of 10 for the low gradient/fast rate pairing of G and R, while the reliability (beta) was lower.

Isoelectric focusing analysis of antibody clonotype changes occurring during immune responses using immobilized pH gradients

Serum was collected from rabbits at 2-day intervals following a single injection with tetanus toxoid or at weekly intervals following multiple injections with Micrococcus lysodeikticus cell walls. These sera were analyzed for the presence of individual clonotypes of specific antitetanus or antimicrococcal antibodies by isoelectric focusing in immobilized pH gradients with added carrier ampholytes followed by affinity immunoblotting. The affinity immunoblots obtained clearly defined both the rapid disappearance and late appearance of distinct subsets of antibody clonotypes during the response. These data demonstrate the application of affinity immunoblotting combined with immobilized pH gradients for detecting the subtle changes in specific antibody clonotype patterns which occur during an immune response.

Solar cycle dependence of the radial gradient of cosmic ray intensity

Observation of the interplanetary intensity of cosmic rays (Ep greater than 80 MeV) by Pioneers 10 and 11 now spans a 16-year time period 1972-1988 and heliocentric radial distances, out to 43.7 AU for Pioneer 10 and 25.8 AU for Pioneer 11. Solar modulation continues to be present at the current distances of both spacecraft. The radial gradient of intensity is measured continuously over the slowly varying, outward moving radial segment r10-r11. The 50-day mean values of the gradient G vary systematically and cyclically in phase with solar activity as measured by sunspot number, with a maximum value of about 2.1 percent/AU at sunspot maximum and a minimum value of about 1.2 percent/AU at sunspot minimum.

A finite element solution algorithm for nonlinear thermal problems with severe gradients

An implicit enthalpy - flux component finite element algorithm is presented for nonlinear thermal problems with severe gradients. The algorithm is formulated to permit efficient solution of nonlinear heat transfer problems for unstructured meshes with a large range of element sizes. Two transient conduction examples illustrate the effectiveness of the approach for problems with high temperatures and steep gradients.

Acoustic waves in gases with strong pressure gradients

The effect of strong pressure gradients on the acoustic modes (standing waves) of a rectangular cavity is investigated analytically. When the cavity response is represented by a sum of modes, each mode is found to have two resonant frequencies. The lower frequency is near the Viaesaela-Brundt frequency, which characterizes the buoyant effect, and the higher frequency is above the ordinary acoustic resonance frequency. This finding shows that the propagation velocity of the acoustic waves is increased due to the pressure gradient effect.

An infrared color gradient in the inner coma of Comet Halley

A well-defined gradient is noted in the J-H and H-K colors of near-IR images obtained for Comet Halley in November, 1985, within about 8000 km of the nucleus; the bluest colors are at the photocenter, in conjunction with surface brightness profiles that are steeper than those expected. The color gradient and the brightness profiles are both explainable by the present analysis in terms of the presence of volatile, dirty-ice grains in the inner coma. An outburst of Rayleigh-scattering dust particles (unsupported by spacecraft measurements obtained to date) may also account for the observational data.

Effect of temperature gradient on the optical quality of mercurous chloride crystals

Single crystals of mercurous chloride were grown at temperature gradients of 8, 11 and 17 K/cm by the physical vapor transport method. The optical quality of these crystals was evaluated by measuring bulk scattering and inhomogeneity of refractive index by birefringence interferometry. It was observed that a high temperature gradient at the solid-vapor interface induced thermal stresses and crystals showed higher scattering and irregular fringes.

A generalized gradient algorithm for dynamic optimization

A gradient algorithm is developed that determines optimal trajectories with path equality constraints and terminal constraints. A generalized gradient is formed which improves both the performance index and the path equality constraints simultaneously. The algorithm is extended to treat terminal constraints by using Bryson's impulse response technique. The main features of this algorithm are its numerical stability and smooth convergence near the optimum.

Critique of the vertical gradient of gravity

Growing interest in high precision studies of the Earth's gravitational field warrant a critical review of precision requirements to yield useful results. Several problems are now under consideration. All of these problems involve, more or less, the precise value of the vertical gradients of gravity. The principle conclusion from this review is that the essential absence of Free Air Vertical Gravity Gradient control and actual values of gravimeter calibrations require serious attention. Large errors in high topography on official published gravity maps also cannot be ignored.

Probing the possibility of a C-12/C-13 galactic abundance gradient

High S/N (equal to or greater than 500) observations of interstellar CH+ with the 3.0 m telescope were performed at Lick Observatory and with the 4.0 m telescope at CTIO, of the reddened, early-type stars HD 183143, HD 24432, and HD 157038 in an effort to probe the existence of a C-12/C-13 abundance gradient in our Galaxy. Previous very high quality optical observations of interstellar CH+ toward five stars within 1 kpc of the Sun have yielded a precise weighted mean C-12/C-13 isotope ratio of 43 plus or minus 4 (1 sigma) (Hawkins, Jura, and Meyer 1985; Hawkins and Jura 1987). The isotope ratios derived toward four lines of sight in the local ISM are uniform within 12 percent. The similarity among these carbon isotope ratios determined in diffuse clouds possessing different physical conditions precludes the possibility that the CH+ molecule is suffering from isotope selective effects in these regions. The precise C-12/C-13 derivable from high quality observations of (12)CH+ and (13)CH+ provide the unique opportunity to probe the homogeneity of the ISM in a large scale and the history of nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy. Since CH+ seems to be the most sensitive probe of C-12/C-13 in the diffuse ISM, observations toward more distant stars located up to 2.5 kpc from the Sun are the best way to study the possibility of a Galactic (C-12/C-13) abundance gradient. The researcher obtained 4232 angstrom data toward all three of the stars mentioned above, 3957 angstrom data toward HD 183143 and HD 157038, and 3745 angstrom data toward HD 157038. Because of the poorer quality of the HD 24432 spectrum, and its weaker CH+ absorption lines, the satellite (13)CH+ line was not detected, and thus only a lower limit on the C-12/C-13 ratio toward this star was obtained. The results obtained from careful reduction and analysis of the data toward these stars in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are presented.
