Optimizing DER Deployment for Climate, Health, Resilience, and Energy Bill Benefits Using the REopt Model

Climate change, public health, and resilience to power outages are of critical concern to local governments, federal agencies, and the private sector, and are increasingly motivating investments in distributed energy resources (DERs). However, designing a solar-plus-storage system to co-optimize for climate, health, resilience, and energy bill benefits requires complex trade-offs. To address this need, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has integrated climate and health impacts of grid-purchased electricity and on-site fuel consumption into the publicly-available REopt web tool and API - a techno-economic model that determines the cost-optimal DER system sizes and dispatch strategy. This presentation will provide an overview of the tool's methodology, datasets, and capabilities, including costing emissions into system sizing and dispatch and setting emissions reductions targets. Results of previous work will demonstrate the use of new emissions accounting capabilities by quantifying the impact of including climate and health costs on the optimal resilient microgrid configurations for a hospital, school, and warehouse across 14 U.S. cities.

Modeling Future Demand for EV Charging Infrastructure [Slides]

U.S. climate goals for economy-wide net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 require rapid decarbonization of the light-duty vehicle fleet and plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) are poised to become the preferred technology for achieving this end. Considerable investments in public and private EV charging infrastructure will be needed to support widespread adoption, however, guidance is lacking on when, where, and what types of chargers will be needed. In this PLMA Load Management Dialogue session, researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) discuss findings from a recent quantitative assessment of the charging network requirements to support high penetrations of light-duty EVs by 2030. The study produced multiple detailed network growth trajectories at the national, state, and local levels that serve as a guidepost for future planning. In addition, an overview of NREL's publicly accessible EV infrastructure tools and data sets, designed to support planning and decision-making for EV infrastructure stakeholders, is provided.

Infrastructure-Based Cooperative Perception at a Traffic Intersection: Overview and Challenges

Traffic intersections are crucial and challenging nodes in transportation networks where multiple lanes of vehicles and pedestrians converge. About one-quarter of traffic fatalities and about one-half of all traffic injuries in the United States happen at traffic intersections . Effective management of these intersections is important to ensure safety and efficiency of all users - vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and vulnerable road users (VRUs). With advancements in sensor perception technologies such as radar, light detection and ranging (lidar), and cameras, traffic intersections are developing into dynamic and data-rich environments. By using these data to create a real-time digital twin, we can enable real-time data-driven decision making and a range of applications such as sharing perception information to connected vehicles (CVs) and connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), safety affirmative signaling, and curb optimizing to improve efficiency and enhance safety. This paper presents an overview of the concept and examines the challenges involved in implementing an infrastructure-based cooperative perception engine at a traffic intersection. In addition to outlining the physical components, this study also addresses important challenges involved in a multi-sensor system. We present results from deploying the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) Infrastructure Perception and Control (IPC) mobile trailer at a traffic intersection in the city of Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA that employed multiple radars and lidars to capture the data. This study provides necessary practical learning for the Cooperative Driving Automation (CDA) and traffic engineering communities for next-generation infrastructure-based cooperative perception that promises improvements in signal control for optimized traffic flow, among other applications, and documents findings for ongoing research and development efforts in other areas.

Electronic density response of warm dense matter

Matter at extreme temperatures and pressures—commonly known as warm dense matter (WDM)—is ubiquitous throughout our Universe and occurs in astrophysical objects such as giant planet interiors and brown dwarfs. Moreover, WDM is very important for technological applications such as inertial confinement fusion and is realized in the laboratory using different techniques. A particularly important property for the understanding of WDM is given by its electronic density response to an external perturbation. Such response properties are probed in x-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) experiments and are central for the theoretical description of WDM. In this work, we give an overview of a number of recent developments in this field. To this end, we summarize the relevant theoretical background, covering the regime of linear response theory and nonlinear effects, the fully dynamic response and its static, time-independent limit, and the connection between density response properties and imaginary-time correlation functions (ITCF). In addition, we introduce the most important numerical simulation techniques, including path-integral Monte Carlo simulations and different thermal density functional theory (DFT) approaches. From a practical perspective, we present a variety of simulation results for different density response properties, covering the archetypal model of the uniform electron gas and realistic WDM systems such as hydrogen. Moreover, we show how the concept of ITCFs can be used to infer the temperature from XRTS measurements of arbitrary complex systems without the need for any models or approximations. Finally, we outline a strategy for future developments based on the close interplay between simulations and experiments.

Ensuring electromagnetic compatibility in grid-connected power converters: Challenges, standards, and compliance strategies

In today's rapidly advancing world, electronic devices and systems are fundamental to a wide range of industries, including renewable energy and global telecommunications infrastructure. However, as these devices become more complex and widespread, the risk of electromagnetic interference (EMI) also increases, underscoring the importance of stringent Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements for maintaining system integrity. This paper addresses the specific challenges associated with grid-connected power converters (GCPCs), which are critical in integrating renewable energy into existing power grids. It explores the complexities of EMI in the context of GCPCs, particularly given the recent emergence of tailored EMC standards for these systems. The paper also highlights the shortcomings of applying generic or unrelated standards to GCPCs, often leading to inadequate compliance and testing protocols. Through a detailed analysis of existing standards and recent advancements in product-specific EMC requirements, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the current landscape, offering guidance to stakeholders on navigating the intricate EMC compliance landscape, with a focus on methodologies, testing procedures, and the evolving regulatory environment for GCPCs.

Overview of a Versatile Loading System for Anisotropic Material Property Characterization

Additive manufacturing, cold rolling, and other thermomechanical treatments on metals, especially HCP, can cause texture and oriented grain structures resulting in anisotropic mechanical properties. This can lead to macroscopic response that significantly deviates from isotropic assumptions which motivates studying mechanical properties in multiple directions. In addition, multiaxial loading and complex stress states overlapping the above mentioned material anisotropy can lead to unexpected outcomes. Idaho National Laboratory developed an advanced mechanical testing system to study a range of uniaxial to multiaxial stress states while measuring the anisotropic response bringing insight into the overlap between material properties and stress states. High-temperature capability and stress- or strain-controlled loading is available to enable a variety of experiment types and conditions to measure elastic, plastic, and viscoplastic properties. This poster presents the design and capabilities of this system with preliminary results highlighting the benefits of multiaxial loading and anisotropic analysis in an integrated system.
