Spin-Orbit Torque Switching of a Nearly Compensated Ferrimagnet by Topological Surface States

Utilizing spin-orbit torque (SOT) to switch a magnetic moment provides a promising route for low-power-dissipation spintronic devices. Here, the SOT switching of a nearly compensated ferrimagnet Gd x (FeCo) 1-x by the topological insulator [Bi 2 Se 3 and (BiSb) 2 Te 3 ] is investigated at room temperature. The switching current density of (BiSb) 2 Te 3 (1.20 × 10 5 A cm -2 ) is more than one order of magnitude smaller than that in conventional heavy-metal-based structures, which indicates the ultrahigh efficiency of charge-spin conversion (>1) in topological surface states. By tuning the net magnetic moment of Gd x (FeCo) 1-x via changing the composition, the SOT efficiency has a significant enhancement (6.5 times) near the magnetic compensation point, and at the same time the switching speed can be as fast as several picoseconds. Combining the topological surface states and the nearly compensated ferrimagnets provides a promising route for practical energy-efficient and high-speed spintronic devices.

Effect of structural defects on the magnetic properties of the EuBaCo{sub 1.90}O{sub 5.36} single crystal

The effect of structural defects in cobalt and oxygen sublattices with the constant average oxidation level 3+ of all cobalt ions on the magnetic properties of the EuBaCo{sub 1.90}O{sub 5.36} single crystal has been studied. The magnetic properties of the single crystal and the polycrystalline sample of the corresponding composition are compared in the range T = 200–650 K. The results show that the cobalt-deficient EuBaCo{sub 2–x}O{sub 5.5–δ} samples demonstrate a three-dimensional XY ferromagnetic ordering of magnetic sublattices. The values of the effective magnetic moment at T > 480 K indicate the existence of the IS and HS states of Co{sup 3+} ions. The large difference of values of μ{sub eff} of the EuBaCo{sub 1.90}O{sub 5.36} single crystal and polycrystal can be due to that the magnetic ion spins lie in plane ab. The magnetic field directed along plane ab substantially influences the magnetic ordering at T < 300 K.

Predictions for Uranus from a radiometric Bode's law

Determinations by spacecraft of the low-frequency radio spectra and radiation beam geometry of the magnetospheres of earth, Jupiter, and Saturn now permit a reliable assessment of the overall efficiency of the solar wind in stimulating intense, nonthermal radio bursts from these magnetospheres. It is found that earlier estimates of how magnetospheric radio output scales with the solar wind energy input must be greatly revised, with the result that, while the efficiency is much lower than previously thought, it is remarkably uniform from planet to planet. A 'radimetric Bode's law' is formulated from which a planet's magnetic moment can be estimated from its radio emission output. This law is applied to estimate the low-frequency radio power likely to be measured for Uranus by Voyager 2. It is shown how measurements of Uranus's radio flux can be used to estimate the planetary magnetic moment and solar wind stand-off distance before the in situ measurements.

Magnetic breakdown and spin-zero effect in quantum oscillations in kagome metal CsV3Sb5

Abstract In the recently discovered kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 , an intriguing proposal invoking a doped Chern insulator state suggests the presence of small Chern Fermi pockets hosting spontaneous orbital-currents and large orbital magnetic moments. While the net thermodynamic magnetization is nearly insensitive to these moments, due to their antiferromagnetic alignment, their presence can be revealed by the Zeeman effect, which shifts electron energies in magnetic fields with a proportionality given by the effective g −factor. Here, we determine the g -factor using the spin-zero effect in magnetic quantum oscillations. A large g -factor enhancement is visible only in magnetic breakdown orbits between conventional and concentrated Berry curvature Fermi pockets that host large orbital moments. Such Berry-curvature-generated large orbital moments are almost always concealed by other effects. In this system, however, magnetic breakdown orbits due to the proximity to a conventional Fermi-surface section allow them to be visibly manifested in magnetic quantum oscillations. Our results provide a remarkable example of the interplay between electronic correlations and more conventional electronic bands in quantum materials.

The Martian magnetic field

The paper presents an overview of the Martian magnetic field measurements and the criticisms made of them. The measurements of the Mars 2, 3, and 5 spacecraft were interpreted by Dolginov et al. (1976, 1978) to be consistent with an intrinsic planetary magnetic moment of 2.5 times 10 to the 22nd power gauss cu cm, basing this result on the apparent size of the obstacle responsible for deflecting the solar wind and an apparent encounter of the spacecraft with the planetary field. It is shown that if the dependence of the Martian magnetic moment on the rotation rate was linear, the estimate of the moment would be far larger than reported by Dolginov et al. An upper limit of 250 km is calculated for the dynamo radius using the similarity law, compared with 500 km obtained by Dolginov et al. It is concluded that the possible strength of a Martian dynamo is below expectations, and it is likely that the Mars dynamo is not presently operative.

Magnetic properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd 2 ZnO 5

We investigate the physical properties of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice material BaNd 2 ZnO 5 . Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements reveal antiferromagnetic order below 1.65 K. The magnetic order is found to be a 2–Q magnetic structure with the magnetic moments lying in the Shastry-Sutherland lattice planes comprising the tetragonal crystal structure of BaNd 2 ZnO 5 . The ordered moment for this structure is 1.9(1) μB per Nd ion. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements reveal that the crystal field ground state doublet is well separated from the first excited state at 8 meV. The crystal field Hamiltonian is determined through simultaneous refinement of models with both the LS coupling and intermediate coupling approximations to the inelastic neutron scattering and magnetic susceptibility data. The ground state doublet indicates that the magnetic moments lie primarily in the basal plane with magnitude consistent with the size of the determined ordered moment.

Magnetic configurations of planetary obstacles

The interaction between planetary magnetospheres and solar wind flow is discussed. A proper planetary magnetosphere results from the interaction of a flowing plasma with a planet having an intrinsic, global, magnetic field of sufficient strength to stand off the impinging plasma. Upstream of such an obstacle a bow shock usually exists. The known magnetospheres have severely asymmetric shapes, being elongated approximately along the solar wind flow direction. Conditions which fundamentally determine the structure of a proper planetary magnetosphere are the state of the externally flowing plasma, the planet's magnetic moment, its vector spin, and the presence and nature of internal plasma sources and any plasma sinks. Planets known to have proper magnetospheres are Earth, Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn. Uranus and Neptune may also have magnetospheres, with that of Uranus promising to have an exotic field configuration, because the planet's magnetic moment is expected to be nearly aligned with the solar wind flow direction. Venus and Mars are also discussed. Magnetopause surface waves are mentioned.

Effect of Al Substitution in Structural and Magnetic Properties of MnCr{sub 2}O{sub 4}

Single-phase samples of Mn(Cr{sub 1−x}Al{sub x}){sub 2}O{sub 4} (x = 0 – 0.30) with cubic spinel structure were prepared and the lattice constant is found to decrease from a = 8.4396 Å for x = 0 to a = 8.3801 Å for x = 0.30. The substitution of Al at Cr site is confirmed from the blue shift of Raman modes. Magnetization measurements and analysis show all the prepared samples exhibit ferrimagnetic transition with transition temperature in the range of 46 K for x = 0 to 33 K for x = 0.30. The saturation magnetization (M{sub s}) and the estimated anisotropy constant (K) show an anomalous behavior up to x = 0.10 and beyond that they decrease monotonously. They are explained by considering different site preferences of Al {sup 3+} ions as the doping concentration is increased. The theoretical and experimental effective magnetic moment of the samples is found to be comparable and it decreases with increase in Al concentration.

Ab Initio Study of the Structural, Magnetic, Electronic, and Thermodynamic Properties of Pd{sub 2}MnZ (Z = Ga, Ge, As) Heusler Alloys

The results of examination of the structural, magnetic, electronic, and thermodynamic properties of Pd{sub 2}MnZ (Z = Ga, Ge, As) Heusler alloys obtained in ab initio and Monte Carlo modeling are presented. It is demonstrated that a stable martensitic state is possible for Pd{sub 2}MnGa and Pd{sub 2}MnAs alloys. The equilibrium lattice parameter increases in the considered series of alloys with the number of valence electrons per atom (e/a). The Curie temperature of Pd{sub 2}MnZ (Z = Ga, Ge, As) alloys is determined using the calculated parameters of exchange interaction and total magnetic moments.

Voyager observations of Saturnian ion and electron phase space densities

Voyager 1 and 2 low-energy charged particle (LECP) observations of 30-keV to 2-MeV electron and ion energy spectra and angular distributions have been used to calculate phase space densities at constant first and second adiabatic invariants in the Saturnian magnetosphere. The results are generally consistent with inward radial diffusion from an external source. The data obtained also indicate a source of ions located within the orbital distance of Enceladus capable of producing 10- to 40-MeV/Gauss ions as well as a source of electrons at about 3.5 Saturn radii which produces particles at 100 to 200 MeV/Gauss. Higher magnetic moment (200-400 MeV/Gauss) ions extend from the sunward boundary between a plasma mantle and the region of durable trapping at the Saturn radius; the behavior of the phase space density suggests inward diffusion of these particles from a source at the boundary. The identification of sources of low (10 to 200 MeV/Gauss) magnetic moment particles deep in the Saturnian magnetosphere is a new result of this work. Several analyses of the observed phase space densities in terms of time-independent radial diffusion are presented.

Study of the Rare Earth Effects on the Magnetic Fluctuations in RbLn{sub 2}Fe{sub 4}As{sub 4}O{sub 2} (Ln = Tb, Dy, and Ho) by Mössbauer Spectroscopy

In the current work, we report the investigation of RbLn{sub 2}Fe{sub 4}As{sub 4}O{sub 2} (Ln = Tb, Dy, and Ho) and RbFe{sub 2}As{sub 2} by {sup 57}Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. Singlet pattern has been observed for all the samples, indicating the absence of static magnetic ordering down to 5.9 K on the Fe sublattice. The observed intermediate value of the isomer shift confirms the effective self charge transfer effect for the studied superconductors. Debye temperatures of these samples have been determined by the temperature dependence of the isomer shift. Most importantly, we observe different spectral line width broadening behaviors for samples with different rare earth elements, and no line width broadenings for samples Ln = Tb and Ho. These results suggest that the observed magnetic fluctuations at the Fe site might be sensitive to the magnetic behaviors of the rare earth magnetic moments.

Magnetic properties of BiFe{sub 0.93}Mn{sub 0.07}O{sub 3} powders obtained by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis

Samples of BiFe{sub 0.93}Mn{sub 0.07}O{sub 3} with different specific surface area were synthesized for the first time by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis. The resulting powders consist of porous particles of a spherical shape of medium size ~0.5 μm and have record values of residual magnetization and coercive force. It is found that the magnetic properties of the porous powder particles are determined by the distortion of the crystal lattice and the presence of uncompensated magnetic moments of iron ions on the surface.

On the origin of stable remanence in pseudo-single domain grains

A critique is presented of the quantitative model for the magnetic moment of pseudo-single domain grains (hypothetical magnetite grains larger than the critical size threshold for single domain behavior, yet also difficult to demagnetize), derived by Stacey and Banerjee (1974). Evidence from theoretical studies in micromagnetics demonstrates that the spin orientations in such grains are too complex to permit ready prediction of the magnetic moments. However, this limitation in the theory may be overcome by experiments involving rare earth-cobalt alloys and yttrium iron garnet crystals; these studies have suggested that surface anisotropy is the predominant cause of the high coercivity of pseudo-single domain grains.

Investigation of Substitution of Cu and Se Atoms on the Electronic and Magnetic Properties of GaN Monolayer Nanosheet

In this paper, some of the electronic properties of GaN monolayer nanosheet are investigated in its pure form and after substitution of Cu and Se atoms. Electronic properties have been calculated based on the density functional theory approach with full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The results show that GaN nanosheet is a nonmagnetic semiconductor and its energy gap is equal to 2.202 eV. Our results show that GaN nanosheet properties vary with substitution of Cu or Se atoms: GaSeN and GaCuN show half-metallic and metallic behaviors, respectively. Calculated magnetic moments for GaSeN and GaCuN are 1.00 and 1.127 µ{sub B}, respectively.

High Precision Magnetic Field Measurement for the Muon g-2 Experiment

The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab will measure the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, aµ with a precision of 140 ppb, a four-fold improvement over the former BNL E821 result. If the current discrepancy of about 3.5σ between the Standard Model value for aµ and the former experiments was real, then the new experiment would verify the deviation with >7σ significance. The experiment uses muons with the magic momentum of 3.09 GeV/c stored in a very homogeneous magnetic field of a 45 m long storage ring. The determination of aµ requires the precise knowledge of both the anomalous muon spin precession, ωa, and the magnetic field, ωp, expressed in terms of the free-proton Larmor frequency. The field measurement uses the high precision tool of pulsed Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (pNMR) and requires cross-calibrating a set of probes: a very accurate NMR probe calibrates the 17 probes on the in-vacuum field mapping system (the so-called trolley). This trolley in turn is used to map the field over the full azimuth of the storage ring. The trolley measurement also provides the calibration of the 378 fixed probes around the ring that constantly monitor the field drift. This article presents the summary of the entire field measurement system needed to determine ωp. This work was supported in part by the US DOE, Fermilab and US DOE OHEP under contract No. KA2201020.

Electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of bulk and (1 1 1)-surfaces of CoMnZnSi quaternary Heusler alloy

The structural stability, electronic structure, and magnetic and optical properties of CoMnZnSi quaternary Heusler alloy (QHA) in the bulk and (1 1 1)-slab forms have been investigated by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Formation and cohesive energies, and elastic constants confirm that the bulk CoMnZnSi is chemically and mechanically stable at an equilibrium lattice parameter of 5.81 Å. The calculated elastic constants also indicate that this QHA has ductile and anisotropic features. We investigate and discuss the bonding behavior from charge density distribution and density of states. Furthermore, these calculations in the bulk phase show a perfect half-metallic behavior with an integer value of magnetic moment (4 µB) and a large spin-flip gap of 0.39 eV. On the other hand, the Co (1 1 1) and Si (1 1 1)-slabs exhibit semi-metallic nature at the Fermi level. These results indicate that CoMnZnSi qualifies for spintronic applications. In the bulk and Co (1 1 1), Zn (1 1 1), and Si (1 1 1)-surfaces, the magnetic moment of Co and Mn atoms are ferromagnetically aligned, while the ferrimagnetic alignment of Co with Mn has been found in Mn (1 1 1)-surface. We also investigate the optimal conductivity, dielectric functions, reflectivity, absorption coefficient, refractive index, and loss function to understand the underlying optical properties of this alloy.

Strong Correlation Effect in Ferrimagnetic Half-Metallic V{sub 2}CoAl and V{sub 2}CoGa Heusler Compounds

We present first-principles calculations based on the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method to investigate the structural, elastic, electronic, and magnetic properties of the Heusler compounds V{sub 2}CoAl and V{sub 2}CoGa. We explore different magnetic configurations in both regular and inverse Heusler structures: the Cu{sub 2}MnAl-type and Hg{sub 2}CuTi-type structures respectively. Our compounds are found to be ferrimagnets in the inverse Heusler structure. To take into account the effects of the strong correlation among the localized d-states, we perform a calculation using the GGA+U method (the general gradient approximation with the Hubbard on-site Coulomb correction U). Then we show that both compounds exhibit a half-metallic character and have a magnetic moment of 2.00 μ{sub B} per formula unit. This latter statement is coherent with the generalized Slater-Pauling rule (SP). In terms of the band structure calculations, we explain the formation of the indirect energy band gaps in the spin-majority channels. We also use the mean-field approximation (MFA) to discuss the magnetic exchange couplings and predict the Curie temperature for both compounds.

Thermal Expansion of Co{sub 2}MAl (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni) Band Ferromagnets

The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of Co{sub 2}MAl (M = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni) band ferromagnets is measured in the temperature interval of 80–900 K. The magnetic-fluctuation contribution α{sub m}, {sub sf}(T) = α{sub m}(T) + α{sub sf}(T) to TEC comprised of negative Stoner α{sub m}(T) and positive spin-fluctuation α{sub sf}(T) contributions is presented. It is assumed that the contribution of α{sub m}(T) component is proportional to the square of spontaneous magnetization. The contribution of α{sub sf}(T) is stipulated by the effects of inducing local magnetic moments by spin fluctuations and is proportional to the Pauli susceptibility.
