Topological and magnetic properties of the interacting Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model

We investigate the effects of electronic correlations on the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model using the real-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. We introduce a method to probe topological phase transitions in systems with strong correlations using DMRG, substantiated by an unsupervised machine learning methodology that analyzes the orbital structure of the real-space edges. Including the full multi-orbital Hubbard interaction term, we construct a phase diagram as a function of a gap parameter (m) and the Hubbard interaction strength (U) via exact DMRG simulations on N×4 cylinders. Our analysis confirms that the topological phase persists in the presence of interactions, consistent with previous studies, but it also reveals an intriguing phase transition from a paramagnetic to a stripey antiferromagnetic topological insulator. The combination of the magnetic structure factor, strength of magnetic moments, and the orbitally resolved density, provides real-space information on both topology and magnetism in a strongly correlated system.

Pigmenting agents in Martian soils: inferences from spectral, Mossbauer, and magnetic properties of nanophase and other iron oxides in Hawaiian palagonitic soil PN-9

We have examined a Hawaiian palagonitic tephra sample (PN-9) that has spectroscopic similarities to Martian bright regions using a number of analytical techniques, including Mossbauer and reflectance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, instrumental neutron activation analysis, electron probe microanalysis, transmission electron microscopy, and dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate extraction. Chemically, PN-9 has a Hawaiitic composition with alkali (and presumably silica) loss resulting from leaching by meteoric water during palagonitization; no Ce anomaly is present in the REE pattern. Mineralogically, our results show that nanophase ferric oxide (np-Ox) particles (either nanophase hematite (np-Hm) or a mixture of ferrihydrite and np-Hm) are responsible for the distinctive ferric doublet and visible-wavelength ferric absorption edge observed in Mossbauer and reflectivity spectra, respectively, for this and other spectrally similar palagonitic samples. The np-Ox particles appear to be imbedded in a hydrated aluminosilicate matrix material; no evidence was found for phyllosilicates. Other iron-bearing phases observed are titanomagnetite, which accounts for the magnetic nature of the sample; olivine; pyroxene; and glass. By analogy, np-Ox is likely the primary pigmenting agent of the bright soils and dust of Mars.

Rb 2 CaCu 6 (PO 4 ) 4 O 2 , a novel oxophosphate with a shchurovskyite-type topology: synthesis, structure, magnetic properties and crystal chemistry of rubidium copper phosphates

Single crystals of Rb 2 CaCu 6 (PO 4 ) 4 O 2 were synthesized by a hydrothermal method in the multicomponent system CuCl 2 –Ca(OH) 2 –RbCl–B 2 O 3 –Rb 3 PO 4 . The synthesis was carried out in the temperature range from 690 to 700 K and at the general pressure of 480–500 atm [1 atm = 101.325 kPa] from the mixture in the molar ratio 2CuO:CaO:Rb 2 O:B 2 O 3 :P 2 O 5 . The crystals studied by single-crystal X-ray analysis were found to be monoclinic, space group C 2, a = 16.8913 (4), b = 5.6406 (1), c = 8.3591 (3) Å, β = 93.919 (3)°, V = 794.57 (4) Å 3 . The crystal structure of Rb 2 CaCu 6 (PO 4 ) 4 O 2 is similar to that of shchurovskyite and dmisokolovite and is based upon a heteropolyhedral open framework formed by polar layers of copper polyhedra linked via isolated PO 4 tetrahedra. The presence of well-isolated 2D heteropolyhedral layers in the title compound suggests low-dimensional magnetic behavior which is masked, however, by the fierce competition between multiple ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. At T C = 25 K, Rb 2 CaCu 6 (PO 4 ) 4 O 2 reaches a magnetically ordered state with large residual magnetization.

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of CeFe 11 M (M = Mo, W)

Tetragonal CeFe 11 Mo (struct. type ThMn 12 , a = 8.529(1) Å, c = 4.766(1) Å, V = 346.68(1) Å 3 ) and novel isostructural CeFe 11 W (a = 8.539(1) Å, c = 4.754(1) Å, V = 346.62(1) Å 3 ) are obtained in bulk, as homogenized single-phase arc-melted alloys. Here, their crystal structures are evaluated by full profile Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction patterns which confirm that Ce occupies the 2a atomic site in both cases, whereas atomic disorder is present in the Fe-sublattice, i.e., predominantly on the dumbbell 8i site and minorly on two other sites 8j and 8f. In CeFe 11 Mo the third element, M, is mixed with Fe on the 8i dumbbell site and 8f atomic position, whereas in CeFe 11 W, M is mixed on the 8i and 8j Fe sites. In these bulk CeFe 12-x M x alloys the tetragonal structure persists at lower M content, x < 1 here, in comparison to known similar alloys, with x > 1. Because of the low M content, comparably higher values of mass magnetization and Curie temperature are achieved i.e., CeFe 11 Mo: ϭ s = 104 emu/g (14.7 µ B /f.u.), T c = 420 K and CeFe 11 W: ϭ s = 99 emu/g (16.5 µ B /f.u.), T c = 450 K. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy is uniaxial with anisotropy fields H a ∼ 14.5 and 16.5 kOe, respectively. Based on Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy enhancements, using tungsten as the stabilizing dopant is more beneficial than molybdenum.

Structures and Magnetic Properties of K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 , K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 Synthesized Using the Boron–Chalcogen Mixture Method

A series of A 2 M 4 U 6 S 17 (A = Alkali metal, M = Pd or Pt) compounds, specifically K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 , K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , were synthesized using the combined Boron-Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) and molten flux crystal growth methods. The formation of the Rb- and Cs- containing analogues resulted from the in-situ alkali polysulfide flux formation formed from the alkali carbonates. The successful synthesis of single crystals of the title compounds allowed for their structural characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The structure determination revealed disorder of the alkali cations in Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , while the potassium cations in K 2 Pd 4 U 6 S 17 and K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 were fully ordered. Here, magnetic measurements were performed on samples of K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 that contained small amounts of paramagnetic β-US 2 and diamagnetic PtS. Antiferromagnetic order is observed at T N = 9.1 K for K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 . No long-range magnetic order was observed for Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 . Uranium moments of 2.5, 2.6, and 2.6 μB were measured for K 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , Rb 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , and Cs 2 Pt 4 U 6 S 17 , respectively.

Electronic structure, magnetic properties, spin orientation, and doping effect in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The layered material Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 , with alternating stacking honeycomb and triangular layers, is attracting considerable attention due to its rich physical properties. Here, in this study, using density functional theory and classical Monte Carlo (MC) methods, we systematically study this system with the 3d 5 electronic configuration. Near the Fermi level, the states are mainly contributed by Te 5p orbitals hybridized with Mn 3d orbitals, resembling a charge-transfer system. Furthermore, the spin orientations of the ferrimagnetic (FiM) ground state display different conductive behaviors when along the ab plane or out-of-plane directions: insulating vs metallic states. The energy difference between the FiM [110] insulating and FiM [001] metallic phases is very small (~0.71 meV/Mn) . Changing the angle θ of spin orientation from in-plane to out-of-plane directions, the band gaps of this system are gradually reduced, leading to an insulator-metal transition, resulting in an enhanced electrical conductivity, related to the colossal angular magnetoresistance (MR) effect. Although the three main magnetic couplings were found to be antiferromagnetic, overall the ground state is FiM. In addition, we also constructed the magnetic phase diagram using the classical XY spin model studied with the MC method. Three magnetic phases were obtained, including antiferromagnetic order, noncollinear spin patterns, and FiM order. Moreover, we also investigated the Se and Ge doping into the Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 system: the FiM state has the lowest energy among the magnetic candidates for both Se- and Ge-doped cases. The magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) decreases in the Se-doped case because the Mn orbital moment is reduced as the doping x increases. Due to the small spin-orbit-coupling effect of Se, the insulator-metal transition caused by the spin orientation disappears in the Se-doped case, resulting in an insulating phase in the FiM [001] phase. This causes a reduced colossal angular MR. However, both the MAE and the band gap of the Ge-doped case do not change much with increasing doping x . Our results for Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 could provide guidance to experimentalists and theorists working on this system or related materials.

Effect of Pd alloying on structural, electronic and magnetic properties of L1 0 Fe–Ni

We present a systematic study of the effect of Pd-alloying on phase stability, electronic structure, and elastic properties in L1 0 Fe–Ni using density-functional theory. Being from the same group of the periodic table, Pd is the best candidate for chemical alloying. The Fe–Ni/Fe–Pd/Ni–Pd bond-length increases with increasing Pd-concentration, which weakens the hybridization between low lying energy states below Fermi-level. The reduced hybridization decreases the relative thermodynamic stability of L1 0 Fe(Ni 1–x Pd x ) until x = 0.75. Beyond this concentration, the relative stability gets enhanced, which is attributed to a unique change in the lattice distortion (c/a). The elastic properties show a non-monotonous behavior as a function of x, which is again due to a specific change-over in the uniaxial strain. We found that Pd alloying increases the local Fe moment and structural anisotropy of L1 0 FeNi, which are important for applications such as microwave absorption, refrigeration systems, recording devices, imaging and sensors. Here, we believe that the present study for the chemical alloying effect can provide critical insights toward the understanding of electronic-structure and elastic behavior of other technologically important materials.

Magnetic properties of alternating Hubbard ladders

We explore the Hubbard Hamiltonian on ladders where the number of sites per rung alternates between two and three. These geometries are bipartite with nonequal or equal number of sites on the two sublattices. Thus they share a key feature of the Hubbard model in a class of lattices which Lieb has shown analytically to exhibit long-range ferrimagnetic order while being amenable to powerful numeric approaches developed for quasi-one-dimensional geometries. The density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method is used to obtain the groundstate properties, e.g., excitation gaps, charge and spin densities as well as their correlation functions at half filling. We show the existence of long-range ferrimagnetic order in the one-dimensional ladder geometries. Our work provides detailed quantitative results which complement the general theorem of Lieb for generalized bipartite lattices. It also addresses the issue of how the alternation between quasi-long-range order and spin liquid behavior for uniform ladders with odd and even numbers of legs might be affected by a regular alternation pattern.

Iron(III)–Oxo Cluster Chemistry with Dimethylarsinate Ligands: Structures, Magnetic Properties, and Computational Studies

A program has been initiated to develop Fe III /oxo cluster chemistry with the ‘pseudo-carboxylate’ ligand dimethylarsinate (Me 2 AsO 2 - ) for comparison with the well investigated Fe III /oxo/carboxylate cluster area. The synthesis and characterization of three polynuclear Fe III complexes are reported, [Fe 12 O 4 (O 2 C t Bu) 8 (O 2 AsMe 2 ) 17 (H 2 O) 3 ]Cl 3 (1), Na 2 [Fe 12 Na 2 O 4 (O 2 AsMe 2 ) 20 (NO 3 ) 6 (Me 2 AsO 2 H) 2 (H 2 O) 4 ](NO 3 ) 6 (2) and [Fe 3 (O 2 AsMe 2 ) 6 (Me 2 AsO 2 H) 2 (hqn) 2 ](NO 3 ) (3), where hqn is 8-hydroxyquinoline. The Fe 12 core of 1 is a type never previously encountered in Fe III carboxylate chemistry, consisting of two Fe 6 units each of which comprises two {Fe 3 (μ 3 -O 2- )} units bridged by three Me 2 AsO 2 - groups and linked into an Fe 12 loop structure by two anti-anti η 1 :η 1 :μ Me 2 AsO 2 - groups, a bridging mode extremely rare with carboxylates. 2 also consists of two Fe 6 units, differing in their ligation from those in 1, and this time linked together into a linear structure by a central {Na 2 (NO 3 ) 2 } bridging unit. 3 is a linear Fe 3 complex with no monoatomic bridges between Fe III ions, a very rare situation in Fe III chemistry with any ligands, and unprecedented in Fe carboxylate chemistry. The distinct differences observed in arsinate vs carboxylate ligation modes are rationalized largely based on the greater basicity of the former vs the latter. Variable-temperature dc and ac magnetic susceptibility data reveal all Fe 2 pairwise interactions to be antiferromagnetic. For 1 and 2, the different J ij couplings were estimated by use of a magnetostructural correlation for high nuclearity Fe III -oxo clusters and by density functional theory calculations using broken symmetry methods, allowing identification of their relative spin vector alignments and thus rationalization of their S = 0 ground states. The J ij values were then used as input values to give excellent fits of the experimental χM T vs T data. For 3, the fits of the experimental χM T vs T data to the Van Vleck equation or with PHI gave a very weak J 12 = -0.8(1) cm -1 (H = –2JŠ i ·Š j convention) between adjacent Fe III ions, and an S = 5/2 ground state. Furthermore, these initial Fe III arsinate complexes also provide structural parameters that help validate literature assignments of arsinate binding modes to iron oxide/hydroxide minerals as part of environmental concerns of using arsenic-containing herbicides in agriculture.
