Digital tape unit test facility software

Two computer programs are described which are used for the collection and analysis of data from the digital tape unit test facility (DTUTF). The data are the recorded results of skew tests made on magnetic digital tapes which are used on computers as input/output media. The results of each tape test are keypunched onto an 80 column computer card. The format of the card is checked and the card image is stored on a master summary tape via the DTUTF card checking and tape updating system. The master summary tape containing the results of all the tape tests is then used for analysis as input to the DTUTF histogram generating system which produces a histogram of skew vs. date for selected data, followed by some statistical analysis of the data.

Properties of Vector Preisach Models

This paper discusses rotational anisotropy and rotational accommodation of magnetic particle tape. These effects have a performance impact during the reading and writing of the recording process. We introduce the reduced vector model as the basis for the computations. Rotational magnetization models must accurately compute the anisotropic characteristics of ellipsoidally magnetizable media. An ellipticity factor is derived for these media that computes the two-dimensional magnetization trajectory for all applied fields. An orientation correction must be applied to the computed rotational magnetization. For isotropic materials, an orientation correction has been developed and presented. For anisotropic materials, an orientation correction is introduced.

The Challenges Facing Science Data Archiving on Current Mass Storage Systems

This paper discusses the desired characteristics of a tape-based petabyte science data archive and retrieval system required to store and distribute several terabytes (TB) of data per day over an extended period of time, probably more than 115 years, in support of programs such as the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). These characteristics take into consideration not only cost effective and affordable storage capacity, but also rapid access to selected files, and reading rates that are needed to satisfy thousands of retrieval transactions per day. It seems that where rapid random access to files is not crucial, the tape medium, magnetic or optical, continues to offer cost effective data storage and retrieval solutions, and is likely to do so for many years to come. However, in environments like EOS these tape based archive solutions provide less than full user satisfaction. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to describe the performance and operational enhancements that need to be made to the current tape based archival systems in order to achieve greater acceptance by the EOS and similar user communities.

Processing of DMSP magnetic data: Handbook of programs, tapes, and datasets

The DMSP F-7 satellite was an operational Air Force meteorological satellite which carried a magnetometer for geophysical measurements. The magnetometer was located within the body of the spacecraft in the presence of large spacecraft fields. In addition to stray magnetic fields, the data have inherent position and time inaccuracies. Algorithms were developed to identify and remove time varying magnetic field noise from the data. These algorithms are embodied in an automated procedure which fits a smooth curve through the data and then identifies outliers and which filters the predominant Fourier component of noise from the data. Techniques developed for Magsat were then modified and used to attempt determination of the spacecraft fields, of any rotation between the magnetometer axes and the spacecraft axes, and of any scale changes within the magnetometer itself. Software setup and usage are documented and program listings are included in the Appendix. The initial and resulting data are archived on magnetic cartridge and the formats are documented.

Mariner Mars 1971 data storage subsystem

A digital tape recorder was used on the Mariner Mars 1971 spacecraft to record television and scientific data. Data were recorded at 132 kilobits/sec and were reproduced at one of five available rates (16.2, 8.1, 4.05, 2.05, or 1.0125 kilobits/sec) selected by ground command to be congruous with the spacecraft-to-earth communications link performance. The transport mechanism contained 167 m of 1.2 cm magnetic recording tape. A single motor was used to drive the peripheral drive transport. During development of the design, stick slip problems were encountered. A design life of 2400 tape passes was achieved during the mission.
