Miniature Microphone Adapter

New microphone adapter permits installation of commercially available condenser microphone 1/8 inch (3 mm) in diameter at location of sensing ports, with remotely located preamplifier. Microphone has high-impedance source and low-level electrical output signal; therfore, adapter designed with minimum capacitance to avoid degradation of microphone sensitivity. Probe insensitive to aeroacoustic disturbances in high-velocity flow.

Miniature electrooptical air flow sensor

A sensor for measuring flow direction and airspeed that is suitable, because of its small size, for rapid instrumentation of research airplanes is described. A propeller driven sphere rotating at a speed proportional to airspeed presents a reflective target to an electro-optical system such that the duty cycle of the resulting electrical output is proportional to yaw angle and the frequency is proportional to airspeed.

Tool and process for miniature explosive joining of tubes

A tool and process to be used in the explosive joining of tubes is disclosed. The tool consists of an initiator, a tool form, and a ribbon explosive. The assembled tool is a compact, storable, and safe device suitable for explosive joining of small, lightweight tubes down to 0.20 inch in diameter. The invention is inserted into either another tube or a tube plate. A shim or standoff between the two surfaces to be welded is necessary. Initiation of the explosive inside the tube results in a high velocity, angular collision between the mating surfaces. This collision creates surface melts and collision bonding wherein electron-sharing linkups are formed.

Monitoring of space station life support systems with miniature mass spectrometry and artificial intelligence

The combination of quadrupole ion trap tandem mass spectroscopy with artificial intelligence is a promising approach for monitoring the performance of the life support systems in the space station. Such an analytical system can provide the selectivity, sensitivity, speed, small size, and decision making intelligence to detect, identify, and quantify trace toxic compounds which may accumulate in the space station habitat.

Miniature high stability high temperature space rated blackbody radiance source

This paper presents the design and test performance of a conical cavity type blackbody radiance source that will meet the requirements of the Halogen Occultation Experiment on the NASA Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite program. The thrust of this design effort was to minimize the heat losses, in order to keep the power usage under 7.5 watts, and to minimize the amount of silica in the materials. Silica in the presence of the platinum heater winding used in this design would cause the platinum to erode, changing the operating temperature set-point. The design required the development of fabrication techniques which would provide very small, close tolerance parts from extremely difficult-to-machine materials. Also, a space rated ceramic core and unique, low thermal conductance, ceramic-to-metal joint was developed, tested and incorporated in this design. The completed flight qualification hardware has undergone performance, environmental and life testing. The design configuration and test results are discussed in detail.

Miniature Flow-Direction/Pitot-Static Pressure Probes

Precision flow-direction/pitot-static pressure probes, ranging from 0.035 to 0.090 inch (0.89 to 2.29 mm) in outside diameter, successfully fabricated and calibrated for use in Langley 20-inch Mach 6 Tunnel. Probes simultaneously measure flow direction and static and pitot pressures in flow fields about configurations in hypersonic flow at temperatures up to 500 degree F (260 degree C).

Miniature PCM compatible wideband spectral analyzer for hypersonic flight research

The design concept and prototype performance of a 10-400-kHz wideband spectral analyzer being developed at NASA Langley as part of the Hypersonic Flight Instrumentation Research Experiment are described and illustrated with diagrams and graphs. The analyzer is intended to compress the bandwidth of data from up to 20 hot-film anemometers, so that the analog PSD waveform from each sensor can be encoded for serial PCM telemetry. Components include an analog multiplier, digital waveform generator, sine-wave VCO, digital VCO, analog low-pass filter, switched-capacitor filter, and rms-dc detector. The prototype demonstrated 1-percent accuracy (referred to a 5-V full-scale output) for sweep rates up to 3/sec over the 10-400-kHz spectrum.

Miniature high temperature plug-type heat flux gauges

The objective is to describe continuing efforts to develop methods for measuring surface heat flux, gauge active surface temperature, and heat transfer coefficient quantities. The methodology involves inventing a procedure for fabricating improved plug-type heat flux gauges and also for formulating inverse heat conduction models and calculation procedures. These models and procedures are required for making indirect measurements of these quantities from direct temperature measurements at gauge interior locations. Measurements of these quantities were made in a turbine blade thermal cycling tester (TBT) located at MSFC. The TBT partially simulates the turbopump turbine environment in the Space Shuttle Main Engine. After the TBT test, experiments were performed in an arc lamp to analyze gauge quality.

Miniature Gas-Circulating Machine

Proposed gas-circulating machine consists essentially of centrifugal pump driven by induction motor. Noncontact bearings suppress wear and contamination. Used to circulate helium (or possibly hydrogen or another gas) in regeneration sorption-compressor refrigeration system aboard spacecraft. Also proves useful in terrestrial applications in which long life, reliability, and low contamination essential.

A Low-cost, Lightweight, and Miniaturized Time-of-flight Mass Spectrometer (TOFMS)

Time-of-flight mass spectrometers (TOFMS) are commonly used for mass analysis and for the measurement of energy distributions of charged particles. For achieving high mass and energy resolution these instruments generally comprise long flight tubes, often as long as a few meters. This necessitates high voltages and a very clean environment. These requirements make them bulky and heavy. We have developed an instrument and calibration techniques that are based on the design principles of TOFMS. However, instead of one long flight tube it consists of a series of cylindrical electrostatic lenses that confine ions under study along the axis of the flight tube.

A miniature fatigue test machine

The objective is to enable the student to generate statistically sound fatigue data sets on wire specimens of varying diameter, microstructure, or material. The student can then assess the effect of these parameters of fatigue resistance. The student can also be exposed to ASTM techniques for fatigue data reduction and presentation. Experiments involving variable amplitude block loading are also easily conducted.

Miniature X-band GaAs MMIC analog and bi-phase modulators for spaceborne communications applications

The design concepts, analyses, and the development of GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) linear-phase and digital modulators for the next generation of spaceborne communications systems are summarized. The design approach uses a very compact lumped-element, quadrature hybrid, and MESFET-varactors to provide low-loss and well-controlled phase performance for deep-space transponder (DST) applications. The measured results of the MESFET-diode show a capacitance range of 2:1 under reverse bias, and a Q of 38 at 10 GHz. Three cascaded sections of hybrid-coupled reflection phase shifters have been modeled and simulations performed to provide an X-band (8415 +/- 50 MHz) DST phase modulator with +/-2.5 radians of peak phase deviation.
