An investigation in the MSFC TWT to determine spoiler effects on wing loads and elevon hinge moments utilizing 0.004-scale models (77-0 and 74-OTS) of the shuttle vehicle 5 configuration (IA125)

Information is presented for wind tunnel tests (IA125) of a 0.004-scale orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket motor integrated vehicle model (77-0 and 74-OTS) in the MSFC Trisonic Wind Tunnel. These tests were conducted in support of MCR's 1344 and 1346. Data from these tests provide spoiler effects on wing bending/torsion and elevon hinge moments, elevon effectiveness data and the influence of solid plumes from Mach numbers of 0.6 through 2.74 at angles of attack and sideslip from -10 through 10 degrees.

Results of an investigation of Reynolds effects on integrated vehicle elevon hinge moments and wing panel loads obtained with 0.010 scale model 72 OTS in the Rockwell trisonic wind tunnel (IA141)

Wind tunnel investigations were conducted on an 0.010-scale representation of the VL70-000140C Integrated Space Shuttle Launch Vehicle. The primary test objective was to obtain Reynolds number effects on orbiter elevon hinge moments and wing bending/torsional moments. Launch vehicle aerodynamic force data were also recorded. The elevon hinge moments, wing bending/torsional moments, and vehicle force data were recorded over an angle of attack range of -6 deg to +6 deg, an angle of sideslip range of -6 deg to +6 deg, at Mach numbers of 0.6, 0.975, 1.05 and 1.25. The Reynolds number was varied from a minimum of 4.5 million/foot to a maximum of 11.5 million/foot. The complete integrated configuration was tested with the orbiter elevons set at 0 deg and deflected to 9 deg on the outboard elevon and 10 deg on the inboard elevon. Testing was conducted in the TWT 19.7% porous transonic test section with the model sting mounted through the orbiter base. All aerodynamic force data were obtained from internal strain gage balance located in the orbiter.

Hacking Kilometer-Scale Models: A Participative Model for Climate Information

In May 2025, nearly 700 participants from all around the world coalesced at 10 regional nodes and a few satellite nodes to take part in a global hackathon of kilometer-scale (horizontal grid spacing < 10 km) regional and global Earth system models. Exciting science is emerging from these efforts, ranging across novel model analysis, new ways of integrating with satellite data, and emulation with machine learning. New technologies were trialed that enable the community to work in new and complementary ways to democratize access to global information at a local scale from a set of the world’s highest-resolution climate models. The hackathon demonstrated how exascale data can be organized to be accessible to anyone. Fundamentally, the community could apply these techniques and technologies to move toward more participative models for coproduction and delivery of diverse sources of climate information for climate scientists and citizens alike.

Results of experimental tests in the MSFC 14 x 14 inch trisonic wind tunnel on a .004 scale model space shuttle integrated vehicle 5 (model 77-O, 74-TS) to relieve wing loads during ascent (IA71)

Results are presented for the 0.004-scale orbiter, external tank, and solid rocket boosters combined as an integrated vehicle in a trisonic wind tunnel at mach numbers from 0.6 to 2.0. The primary test objective was to determine the effectiveness of several methods in relieving the Orbiter wing bending and torsion loads and moments during launch. Effects of several midwing spoilers, termed flipper doors, and Orbiter/external tank incidence were investigated. Photographs are included.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 0.5-Scale Model of the Fairchild XSAM-N-2 Lark Missile at High Subsonic Speeds

An investigation was conducted to determine the longitudinal- and lateral-stability characteristics of a 0.5-scale moue1 of the Fairchild Lark missile, The model was tested with 0 deg and with 22.5 deg of roll. Three horizontal wings having NACA 16-009, 16-209, and 64A-209 sections were tested. Pressures were measured on both pointed and blunt noses. The wind-tunnel-test data indicate that rolling the missile 22.5 deg. had no serious effect on the static longitudinal stability. The desired maneuvering acceleration could not be attained with any of the horizontal wings tested, even with the horizontal wing flaps deflected 50 deg. The flaps on the 64A-209 wing (with small trailing-edge angles and flat sides) were effective at all flap deflections, while the flaps on the 16-series wings (with large trailing-edge angles) lost effectiveness at small flap deflections. The data showed that rolling moment existed when the vertical wing flaps were deflected with the model at other than zero angle of attack. A similar rolling moment probably would be found . with the horizontal wing flaps deflected and the model yawed.

BVI impulsive noise reduction by higher harmonic pitch control - Results of a scaled model rotor experiment in the DNW

Results are presented of a model rotor acoustics test performed to examine the benefit of higher harmonic control (HHC) of blade pitch to reduce blade-vortex interaction (BVI) impulsive noise. A dynamically scaled, four-bladed, rigid rotor model, a 40-percent replica of the B0-105 main rotor, was tested in the German Dutch Wind Tunnel. Noise characteristics and noise directivity patterns as well as vibratory loads were measured and used to demonstrate the changes when different HHC schedules were applied. Dramatic changes of the acoustic signatures and the noise radiation directivity with the HHC phase variations are found. Compared to the baseline conditions (without HHC), significant mid-frequency noise reductions of locally 6 dB are obtained for low-speed descent conditions where GVI is most intense. For other rotor operating conditions with less intense BVI there is less or no benefit from the use of HHC. LF noise and vibratory loads, especially at optimum noise reduction control settings, are found to increase.

Investigation of ground effects on large and small scale models of a three fan V/STOL aircraft configuration

Induced lift of a subsonic, three fan, lift/cruise, V/STOL aircraft configuration was investigated using scale modes of a multimission aircraft whose design incorporates a nose mounted lift fan and two lift/cruise units located over the wing. Configuration effects were assessed for lift improvement devices, lift/cruise nozzle rails, nozzle perimeter plates, and alternate nose fan exit hubs. Tests were conducted at four model heights (H/D = 0.95, 1.53, 3.06 and 6.45, where D is the average nozzle exit diameter equal to 0.997 m.) Results are presented and discussed.

Mobility analysis, simulation, and scale model testing for the design of wheeled planetary rovers

The use of computer based techniques to model and simulate wheeled rovers on rough natural terrains is considered. Physical models of a prototype vehicle can be used to test the correlation of the simulations in scaled testing. The computer approaches include a quasi-static planar or two dimensional analysis and design tool based on the traction necessary for the vehicle to have imminent mobility. The computer program modeled a six by six wheel drive vehicle of original kinematic configuration, called the Rocker Bogie. The Rocker Bogie was optimized using the quasi-static software with respect to its articulation parameters prior to fabrication of a prototype. In another approach used, the dynamics of the Rocker Bogie vehicle in 3-D space was modeled on an engineering workstation using commercial software. The model included the complex and nonlinear interaction of the tire and terrain. The results of the investigation yielded numerical and graphical results of the rover traversing rough terrain on the earth, moon, and Mars. In addition, animations of the rover excursions were also generated. A prototype vehicle was then used in a series of testbed and field experiments. Correspondence was then established between the computer models and the physical model. The results indicated the utility of the quasi-static tool for configurational design, as well as the predictive ability of the 3-D simulation to model the dynamic behavior of the vehicle over short traverses.

Results of low speed wind tunnel tests on a .0405 scale model Rockwell Space Shuttle Orbiter tested both in free air and in the presence of a ground plane (OA16)

Experimental aerodynamic investigations were conducted on a .0405 scale representation of the space shuttle orbiter in a 7.75 x 11 foot low speed wind tunnel during the time period March 21, to April 17, 1973. The primary test objectives were to investigate both the aerodynamic and propulsion effects of various air breathing engine systems in free air and in the presence of the ground. The free air portion of this test investigated the aerodynamic effects of engine nacelle number, nacelle grouping, and nacelle location. For this testing the model was sting mounted on a six component internal strain gage balance entering through the model base. The ground plane portion of the aerodynamic test investigated the same nacelle effects at ground plane locations of full scale W.P. = 239.9, 209.3, 158.9, 108.5, and 7.78 in. At the conclusion of the aerodynamic test period the propulsion effects of various nacelle locations and freestream orientations in the presence of the ground were investigated.

Comparing Test Data on Scale-Model Helicopter Rotors

Model-Scale Aerodynamic Performance Testing of Proposed Modifications to the NASA Langley Low Speed Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel

Tests were performed on a 1/20th-scale model of the Low Speed Aeroacoustic Wind Tunnel to determine the performance effects of insertion of acoustic baffles in the tunnel inlet, replacement of the existing collector with a new collector design in the open jet test section, and addition of flow splitters to the acoustic baffle section downstream of the test section. As expected, the inlet baffles caused a reduction in facility performance. About half of the performance loss was recovered by addition the flow splitters to the downstream baffles. All collectors tested reduced facility performance. However, test chamber recirculation flow was reduced by the new collector designs and shielding of some of the microphones was reduced owing to the smaller size of the new collector. Overall performance loss in the facility is expected to be a 5 percent top flow speed reduction, but the facility will meet OSHA limits for external noise levels and recirculation in the test section will be reduced.

Multi-scale modeling of wastage layer formation in metallic fuel cladding

Fuel-cladding chemical interaction (FCCI) is a major concern for U-Zr metallic fuels' performance, primarily due to the formation of a brittle layer (wastage) in the cladding. This brittle layer, resulting from intermetallic compounds between cladding constituents Fe, Cr, and lanthanide fission products, significantly impacts the cladding's mechanical integrity. Recent efforts focus on developing a mechanistic modeling framework to understand lanthanide production, transport to the fuel-cladding interface, and phase transformation to intermetallic phases. A multi-scale computational approach has been used to calculate lanthanide transport rates, with atomistic calculations determining Nd diffusivities through the solid fuel matrix and along pore surfaces. These diffusivities inform a mesoscale model to determine an effective diffusion coefficient, accounting for porosity and infiltration with bond sodium. This effective diffusivity is used in engineering-scale simulations via the BISON fuel performance code, which has been validated against EBR-II and FFTF reactor experiments.

Geometry Optimization of Cable-Based Actuation for Small-Scale Model Testing of a Floating Marine Turbine: Preprint

This research aims to apply combined wave and tidal current loads to a small-scale floating marine current turbine in a wave tank, where an actuation system applies hydrodynamic and mooring forces on the hardware based on results from a simulation. We use a real-time hybrid test setup with physical wave forcing from the wave tank and simulated current and mooring forces implemented through a tensioned cable array. For this paper, we developed an optimization algorithm that adjusts the hardware geometry of the cable array to achieve more efficient tension allocation across the cables for the loads that need to be actuated. By adjusting the points where the cables are attached to the floating platform and the angles between the platform and the winches, an optimal cable geometry can be found to minimize tension variations in the lines, maintain the desired pretension, and prevent excessive tensions. We present the optimization problem formulation, the actuation system evaluation approach, and optimization results that show effective cable actuation setups that are being considered for implementation in the wave tank tests.

Reservoir-scale model of geologic hydrogen production from serpentinization: Cyclic injection in a dual-permeability fracture-matrix system

Geologic hydrogen (GeoH 2 ) from serpentinization is a promising low-carbon resource, but its reservoir-scale behavior remains poorly understood. We develop a dual-permeability reactive transport model for an injector–producer well pair in ultramafic rock that couples multiphase flow, heat transfer, geochemistry, and porosity–permeability evolution. Here, the model is calibrated to olivine flow-through experiments and upscaled to two-year long simulations with continuous injection and cyclic injection with shut-in-to-injection ratios (SIR = 1, 0.5, 0.1). Olivine reacts along high-flux pathways to form lizardite and magnetite, increasing pH; H 2 (aq) and H 2 (g) peak early and then decline as exsolution and advective export outpace local generation. Continuous injection yields the highest cumulative H 2 but the lowest water-use efficiency (1.138 x 10 –6 mol/kgw). Cyclic injection increases this ratio to 1.35 x 10 –6 , 1.377 x 10 –6 , and 1.182 x 10 –6 mol/kgw for SIR = 1, 0.5, and 0.1, respectively; SIR = 0.5 provides a ~20% improvement over continuous injection and the best compromise for pilot design.

Results of tests OA12 and IA9 in the Ames Research Center unitary plan wind tunnels on an 0.030-scale model of the space shuttle vehicle 2A to determine aerodynamic loads, volume 1

Tests were conducted in unitary plan wind tunnels on an 0.030-scale replica of the space shuttle vehicle configuration 2A. Aerodynamic loads data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.6 to 3.5. The investigation included tests on the integrated (launch) configuration and tests on the isolated orbiter (entry configuration). The integrated vehicle was tested at angles of attack and sideslip from minus 8 deg to plus 8 deg. The isolated orbiter was tested at angles of attack from minus 15 deg to plus 40 deg and angles of sideslip from minus 10 deg to plus 10 deg are dictated by trajectory considerations. The effects of orbiter/external tank incidence and deflected control surfaces on aerodynamic loads were also investigated.

The effect of orbiter/external tank incidence angle and deflected control surfaces on aerodynamic loads were also investigated.

Noise and performance characteristics of a model scale X-wing rotor system in hover

Noise data for the hover condition were measured for a 8 m diameter X-wing model rotor mounted on an outdoor whirl tower. The noise was found to be a function of operating condition, in general increasing with performance. The X-wing spectra obtained from narrowband and 1/3-octave band analyses were dominated by the blade passage frequency harmonics. The circulation control slot blowing produced 1 to 10 kHz broadband noise which exhibited a jet velocity to the 5.4 dependency. Under the rotor plane loading noise was dominant, except at low values of blade pressure ratio where a sharp decrease in the blade passage frequency harmonic levels was observed. In the rotor plane, the contribution of the broadband noise sources was greater than under the rotor plane. The X-wing rotor system in hover exhibited flexibility in operating conditions to achieve a specific level of performance. The high collective, low blade passage ratio combinations which meet a given level of performance were associated with low overall sound pressure levels.

Stability and Control Characteristics of a Small-Scale Model of an Aerial Vehicle Supported by Two Ducted Fans

An investigation has been made to determine the stability and control characteristics in hovering and in forward flight of a free-flight model representing a type of vertical-take-off-and-landing aircraft which utilizes two fixed ducted fans as its sole source of lift and propulsion. The model, having fans 28 inches in diameter, was considered to be approximately one-third the size of a full-scale aircraft. Control moments for most of the hovering tests and all the forward-flight tests were provided by remotely controlled compressed-air jets at the sides and ends of the model. For one brief phase of the hovering investigation a system of vanes in the duct slipstreams was substituted for the jets as a means of roll control. During the forward-flight tests, the model was flown with both the tandem and side-by-side duct arrangements. In hovering the model exhibited strongly divergent oscillations about the pitch and roll axes. The pitching oscillation of the tandem configuration was of a fairly long period and was not particularly difficult to control; the rolling oscillation, however, was of a relatively short period and was extremely difficult to control. Both oscillations could be completely eliminated by the addition of a sufficient amount of artificial damping. The control moments produced by the vane-type roll control system were weak and were accompanied by a side force of appreciable magnitude and undesirable direction. In forward flight the model required an undesirably large nose-down tilt angle for equilibrium at any appreciable speed. A vane was placed transversely in the slipstream of the forward duct of the tandem configuration in an attempt to reduce this tilt angle. The vane was effective in reducing the tilt angle but apparently caused an increase in the power requirements and in the angle-of-attack instability. Without the vane, a forward speed of 30 knots (full scale) required a nose-down tilt angle of about 300. A powerful pitch control moment was required not only to maintain the trim attitude but also to 2 overcome the effects of instability with angle of attack. Less pitch control moment was required for the tandem configuration than for the side-by-side configuration at any given forward speed. The instability in roll increased with forward speed. No forward speeds in excess of about 20 knots (full scale) were achieved until the artificial damping in roll and the yaw control moment were increased appreciably above values which had proved satisfactory for hovering flight.
