Influence of point defects on the electronic and topological properties of monolayer WTe 2

In some topological insulators such as monolayers of WTe 2 or graphene with spin-orbit coupling, band inversion originates from chemical bonding and space group symmetry, in contrast to materials such as Bi 2 Se 3 , where the band inversion derives from relativistic effects in the atoms. In the former, band inversion is susceptible to changes of the chemical environment, e.g., by defects, while the latter are less affected by defects due to the larger energy scale associated with atomic relativistic effects. Motivated by recent experiments, we study the effect of Te vacancies and Te adatoms on the electronic properties of WTe 2 . We find that the Te vacancies have a formation energy of 2.21 eV, while the formation energy of the Te adatoms is much lower with 0.72 eV. Here, the vacancies strongly influence the band structure and we present evidence that band inversion is already reversed at the nominal composition of WTe 1.97 . In contrast, we show that the adatoms do not change the electronic structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level and thus the topological properties.

First-order phase transition to a nonmagnetic ground state in nonsymmorphic NbCrP

Here, we report the discovery of a first-order phase transition at around 125 K in NbCrP, which is a nonsymmorphic crystal with the P n m a space group. From the resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements using crystals made by the Sn-flux method, the high-temperature (HT) phase is characterized to be metallic with a non-negligible magnetic anisotropy. The low-temperature (LT) phase is also found to be a nonmagnetic metallic state with a crystal of lower symmetry. In the LT phase, the spin susceptibility is reduced by ~30 % from that in the HT phase, suggesting that the phase transition is triggered by the electronic instability. The possible origin of the phase transition in NbCrP is discussed based on the electronic structure by comparing it with those in other nonsymmorphic compounds, RuP and RuAs.

Noncollinear antiferromagnetic order in the buckled honeycomb lattice of magnetoelectric Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 determined by single-crystal neutron diffraction

Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 exhibits a three-dimensional magnetic lattice based on the buckled honeycomb motif. It shows unusual magnetoelectric effects, including the sign change and nonlinearity. These effects cannot be understood without the detailed knowledge of the magnetic structure. Herein, we report neutron diffraction and direction-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements on Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 single crystals. In this work, below 20.3 K, we find a long-range antiferromagnetic order in the alternating buckled and flat honeycomb layers of Co 2+ ions stacked along the c axis. Within experimental accuracy, the magnetic moments lie in the ab plane. They form a canted antiferromagnetic structure with a tilt angle of ~14° at 15 K in the buckled layers, while the magnetic moments in each flat layer are collinear. This is directly evidenced by a finite (0, 0, 3) magnetic Bragg peak intensity, which would be absent in the collinear magnetic order. The magnetic space group is C2/c'. It is different from the previously reported C2/c' group, also found in the isostructural Co 4 Nb 2 O 9 . The revised magnetic structure successfully explains the major features of the magnetoelectric tensor of Co 4 Ta 2 O 9 within the framework of the spin-flop model.

Magnetocapacitance effect and magnetoelectric coupling in type-II multiferroic HoFeWO 6

We have investigated the multiferroicity and magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in HoFeWO 6 . With a noncentrosymmetric polar structure (space group Pna2 1 ) at room temperature, this compound shows an onset of electric polarization with an antiferromagnetic ordering at the Néel temperature (T N ) of 17.8 K. The magnetic properties of the polycrystalline samples were studied by DC and AC magnetization and heat capacity measurements. The metamagnetic behavior at low temperatures was found to be directly related to the dielectric properties of the compound. In particular, field-dependent measurements of capacitance show a magnetocapacitance (MC) effect with double-hysteresis loop behavior in direct correspondence with the magnetization. Our x-ray diffraction results show the Pna2 1 structure down to 8 K and suggest the absence of a structural phase transition across T N . Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy and soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Fe L 2,3 and Ho M 4,5 edges revealed the oxidation state of Fe and Ho cations to be 3+. Fe L 2,3 XMCD further shows that Fe 3+ cations are antiferromagnetically ordered in a noncollinear fashion with spins arranged 90° with respect to each other. Our findings show that HoFeWO 6 is a type-II multiferroic exhibiting a MC effect. Furthermore, the observed MC effect and the change in polarization by the magnetic field, as well as their direct correspondence with magnetization, further support the strong ME coupling in this compound.

Magnetic structure and multiferroicity of Sc-substituted hexagonal YbFeO 3

The hexagonal rare-earth ferrite RFeO 3 family represents a unique class of multiferroics exhibiting weak ferromagnetism, and a strong coupling between magnetism and structural trimerization is predicted. However, the hexagonal structure for RFeO 3 remains metastable in conventional conditions. We have succeeded in stabilizing the hexagonal structure of polycrystalline YbFeO 3 by partial Sc substitution of Yb. Using bulk magnetometry and neutron diffraction, we find that Yb 0.42 Sc 0.58 FeO 3 orders into a canted antiferromagnetic state with the Néel temperature T N ~ 165K, below which the Fe 3+ moments form the triangular configuration in the ab plane and their in-plane projections are parallel to the [100] axis, consistent with magnetic space group P6 3 c'm'. It is determined that the spin canting is aligned along the c axis, giving rise to the weak ferromagnetism. Furthermore, the Fe 3+ moments reorient toward a new direction below reorientation temperature T R ~ 40K, satisfying magnetic subgroup P6 3 , while the Yb 3+ moments order independently and ferrimagnetically along the c axis at the characteristic temperature T Yb ~ 15K. Interestingly, reproducible modulation of electric polarization induced by magnetic field at low temperature is achieved, suggesting that the delicate structural distortion associated with two-up/one-down buckling of the Yb/Sc planes and tilting of the FeO 5 bipyramids may mediate the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic orders under magnetic field. Furthermore, the present work represents substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in hexagonal ferrites and related materials.

Higher Chern numbers in multilayer Lieb lattices ( N ≥ 2 ): Topological transitions and quadratic band crossing lines

In this work, we consider a hitherto unexplored setting of a stacked multilayer (N) Lieb lattice which undergoes an unusual topological transition in the presence of intralayer spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The specific stacking configuration induces an effective nonsymmorphic two-dimensional lattice structure, even though the constituent monolayer Lieb lattice is characterized by a symmorphic space group. This emergent nonsymmorphicity leads to multiple doubly degenerate bands extending over the edge of the Brillouin zone (i.e., quadratic band crossing lines). In the presence of intralayer SOC, these doubly degenerate bands typically form three N-band subspaces, mutually separated by two band gaps. We analyze the topological properties of these multiband subspaces, using specially devised Wilson loop operators to compute non-Abelian Berry phases in order to show that they carry a higher Chern number N.

Implications of second harmonic generation for hidden order in Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2

Sr 2 CuO 2 Cl 2 (SCOC) is a model undoped cuprate with I4/mmm crystallographic symmetry, and a simple magnetic space group CAmca with associated magnetic point group mmm1'. However, recent second harmonic spectroscopy in the antiferromagnetic phase has challenged this picture, suggesting instead a magnetic point group 4/mm'm' that coexists with the antiferromagnetism and breaks the two orthogonal mirror planes containing the tetragonal c axis. Here, we analyze the symmetry of SCOC in light of the second harmonic results, and discuss possible ground states that are consistent with the data.

Universal fluctuating regime in triangular chromate antiferromagnets

In this work, we report x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and muon spin relaxation (μSR) measurements, as well as density-functional band-structure calculations for the frustrated S=3/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLHAF) α-HCrO 2 (trigonal, space group: $R\bar{3}m$). This compound undergoes a clear magnetic transition at T N ≃22.5 K, as seen from the drop in the muon paramagnetic fraction and concurrent anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat capacity. Local probes (NMR and μSR) reveal a broad regime with slow fluctuations down to 0.7T N , this temperature corresponding to the maximum in the μSR relaxation rate and in the NMR wipe-out. From the comparison with NaCrO 2 and α-KCrO 2 , the fluctuating regime and slow dynamics below T N appear to be hallmarks of the TLHAF with ABC stacking. We discuss the role of interlayer frustration, which may have impacted recent spin-liquid candidates with triangular geometry.

Competing energetic states in γ – Fe 2 W O 6 with strong spin-charge-lattice coupling

We report magnetic and electronic properties of γ – Fe 2 W O 6 via neutron powder-diffraction measurements and first-principles density-function theory calculations. We reveal a magnetic ground state with two phases coexisting in which the minor phase is the same as an earlier report, despite the fact that both materials studied have the same space group but with slightly different atomic positions. Interestingly, both magnetic phases are well captured by first-principles calculations. Furthermore, we show that these two magnetic phases are correlated with electronic properties, with one being insulating and the other being metallic. These features suggest that γ – Fe 2 W O 6 exhibits competing energetic states in which spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are strongly coupled to each other.

Robust antiferromagnetism in Y 2 Co 3

We report on a solution-growth based method to synthesise single crystals of Y 2 Co 3 and on its structural and magnetic properties. We find that Y 2 Co 3 crystallizes in the La 2 Ni 3 -type orthorhombic structure with space group Cmce (No. 64), with Co forming distorted kagome lattices. Y 2 Co 3 orders antiferromagnetically below TN=252 K. Magnetization measurements reveal that the moments are primarily aligned along the b axis with evidence for some canting. Band-structure calculations indicate that ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orders are nearly degenerate, at odds with experimental results. Magnetization measurements under pressure up to 1 GPa reveal that the Néel temperature decreases with the slope of -1.69 K/GPa. We observe a field-induced spin-flop transition in the magnetization measurements at 1.5 K and 21 T with magnetic field along the b direction. The magnetization is not saturated up to 35 T, indicating that the antiferromagnetic ordering in Y 2 Co 3 is quite robust, which is surprising for such a Co-rich intermetallic.

Topology invisible to eigenvalues in obstructed atomic insulators

Here we consider the extent to which symmetry eigenvalues reveal the topological character of bands. Specifically, we compare distinct atomic limit phases (band representations) that share the same irreducible representations (irreps) at all points in the Brillouin zone and, therefore, appear equivalent in a classification based on eigenvalues. We derive examples where such “irrep-equivalent” phases can be distinguished by a quantized Berry phase or generalization thereof. These examples constitute a generalization of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain: neither phase is topological, in the sense that localized Wannier functions exist, yet there is a topological obstruction between them. We refer to two phases as “Berry obstructed atomic limits” if they have the same irreps, but differ by Berry phases. This is a distinct notion from eigenvalue obstructed atomic limits, which differ in their symmetry irreps at some point in the Brillouin zone. We compute exhaustive lists of elementary band representations that are irrep equivalent, in all space groups, with and without time-reversal symmetry and spin-orbit coupling, and use group theory to derive a set of necessary conditions for irrep equivalence. Finally, we conjecture, and in some cases prove, that irrep-equivalent elementary band representations that are not equivalent can be distinguished by a topological invariant.

Engineering magnetic topological insulators in Eu 5 M 2 X 6 Zintl compounds

Magnetic topological insulators provide a prominent material platform for quantum anomalous Hall physics and axion electrodynamics. However, the lack of material realizations with cleanly gapped surfaces hinders technological utilization of these exotic quantum phenomena. Here, using the Zintl concept and the properties of nonsymmorphic space groups, we computationally engineer magnetic topological insulators. Specifically, we explore Eu 5 M 2 X 6 (M=metal, X=pnictide) Zintl compounds and find that Eu 5 Ga 2 Sb 6 , Eu 5 Tl 2 Sb 6 , and Eu 5 In 2 Bi 6 form stable structures with nontrivial Z 2 indices. We also show that epitaxial and uniaxial strain can be used to control the Z 2 index and the bulk energy gap. Lastly, we discuss experimental progress towards the synthesis of the proposed candidates and provide insights that can be used in the search for robust magnetic topological insulators in Zintl compounds.

Single pair of Weyl nodes in the spin-canted structure of EuCd 2 As 2

We report time reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals are unique among Weyl materials in allowing the minimal number of Weyl points, thus offering the clearest signatures of the associated physics. Here we present neutron diffraction, density-functional theory, and transport measurement results which indicate that EuCd 2 As 2 , under ambient field, strain, and pressure, is such a material with a single pair of Weyl points. Our work reveals a magnetic structure (magnetic space group C2'/m') with Eu moments pointing along the [210] direction in plane and canted ~ 30° out of plane. Density functional theory calculations using this structure show that the observed canting drastically alters the relevant electronic bands, relative to the in-plane order, leading to a single set of well-defined Weyl points. Furthermore, we find the canting angle can tune the distance of the Weyl points above the Fermi level, with the smallest distance at low canting angles. Finally, transport measurements of the anomalous Hall effect and longitudinal magnetoresistance exhibit properties indicative of a chiral anomaly, thus supporting the neutron scattering and DFT results suggesting EuCd 2 As 2 is close to the ideal situation of the Weyl hydrogen atom.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in semiconducting EuMg 2 Sb 2 single crystals

Eu-based Zintl-phase materials EuA 2 Pn 2 (A = Mg, In, Cd, Zn; Pn = Bi, Sb, As, P) have generated significant recent interest owing to the complex interplay of magnetism and band topology. Here, we investigated the crystallographic, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered Zintlphase single crystals of EuMg 2 Sb 2 with the trigonal CaAl 2 Si 2 crystal structure (space group $P\bar{3}m1$). Electrical resistivity measurements complemented with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations find an activated behavior with intrinsic conductivity at high temperatures indicating a semiconducting electronic ground state with a narrow energy gap of 370 meV. Magnetic susceptibility and zero-field heat capacity measurements indicate that the compound undergoes antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering at the Néel temperature T N = 8.0(2) K. Here, zero-field neutron-diffraction measurements reveal that the AFM ordering is A-type where the Eu spins (Eu 2+ , S = 7/2) arranged in ab-plane layers are aligned ferromagnetically in the ab plane and the Eu spins in adjacent layers are aligned antiferromagnetically. Eu-moment reorientation within the ab planes in the trigonal AFM domains associated with a very weak inplane magnetic anisotropy is also evident below T N at low fields < 0.05 T. Although isostructural semimetallic EuMg 2 Bi 2 is reported to host Dirac surface states, the observation of narrow-gap semiconducting behavior in EuMg 2 Sb 2 implies a strong role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in tuning the electronic states of these materials. Our DFT studies also suggest, besides the SOC, the more electronegative and smaller Sb than Bi shifts the low-lying conduction bands along the Γ-A direction to higher energy, resulting in an indirect bulk band gap between the Γ and M points for EuMg 2 Sb 2 .

Canted antiferromagnetic phases in the candidate layered Weyl material EuMnSb 2

EuMnSb 2 is a candidate topological material which can be tuned towards a Weyl semimetal, but there are differing reports for its antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases. The coupling of bands dominated by pure Sb layers hosting topological fermions to Mn and Eu magnetic states provides a potential path to tune the topological properties. In this study we present single-crystal neutron diffraction, magnetization, and heat-capacity data as well as polycrystalline 151 Eu Mössbauer data which show that three AFM phases exist as a function of temperature, and we present a detailed analysis of the magnetic structure in each phase. The Mn magnetic sublattice orders into a C-type AFM structure below T N Mn = 323 (1) K with the ordered Mn magnetic moment μ Mn lying perpendicular to the layers. AFM ordering of the Eu sublattice occurs below T N Eu1 = 23 (1) K with the ordered Eu magnetic moment μ Eu canted away from the layer normal and μ Mn retaining its higher temperature order. μ Eu is ferromagnetically aligned within each Eu layer but exhibits a complicated AFM layer stacking. Both of these higher-temperature phases are described by magnetic space group (MSG) $\mathcal{Pn'm'a'}$ with the chemical and magnetic unit cells having the same dimensions. Cooling below T N Eu2 =9 (1) K reveals a third AFM phase where μ Mn remains unchanged but μ Eu develops an additional substantial in-plane canting. This phase has MSG $\mathcal{P11}$ $\frac{2_1}{a′}$. We also find some evidence of short-range magnetic correlations associated with the Eu between 12 K≲ T≲ 30 K . Using the determined magnetic structures, we postulate the signs of nearest-neighbor intralayer and interlayer exchange constants and the magnetic anisotropy within a general Heisenberg model. We then discuss implications of the various AFM states in EuMnSb 2 and their potential for tuning topological properties.

Phonons in complex twisted crystals: Angular momenta, interactions, and topology

We report phonons and their interactions are critically important for a variety of energy-relevant applications ranging from low thermal resistance substrates to thermal barrier coatings. Fundamental insights into the nature of phonons and allowed interactions are governed by the underlying symmetries of the crystal lattice. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive and detailed description of lattice dynamics derived from twist symmetries of chiral and achiral crystals—twist dynamics. Phonon bands naturally carry quantized crystal angular momentum derived from rotational phases, which give insights into the nature of band crossings and avoided crossings, selection rules for phonon interactions, and topological band crossing behaviors. Twist dynamics is demonstrated for a variety of materials covering a range of space groups, symmetry operations, twist axis orientations, and constituent elements. Furthermore, twist symmetry offers insights into peculiar features observed in scattering measurements. In this context, we present inelastic neutron scattering measurements for rutile TiO 2 and explain them using twist dynamics.

Fathoming the anisotropic magnetoelasticity and magnetocaloric effect in GdNi

Intermetallic GdNi adopts a CrB type of crystal structure (space group Cmcm), and it orders ferromagnetically via a second-order phase transition at 70 K, exhibiting unusually strong spontaneous striction along the three independent crystallographic axes in the ferromagnetically ordered state. Here we introduce a microscopic model to describe anisotropic changes of lattice parameters and elastic contribution to magnetocaloric effect of GdNi. In the model, results of density functional theory (DFT) calculations are used as inputs into a Hamiltonian that includes elastic energy of an anisotropic crystal lattice, exchange interactions, and Zeeman effect. The magnetic and elastic Hamiltonians are coupled through an anisotropic Bean-Rodbell model of magnetoelastic interactions. This coupling gives rise to anisotropic changes in the lattice parameters observed experimentally, and the model reveals good to reasonable agreements between the current theoretical results and earlier experimental data, thus validating the model within the limits of assumptions made. We also show that DFT calculations with 4f electrons of Gd treated as core electrons lead to a more adequate estimate of elastic constants of GdNi in comparison with the LDA + U method where 4f electrons are treated as valence electrons.

Thermal transport properties of IrSbSe

Here we report a thermal transport study of IrSbSe, which crystallizes in a noncentrosymmetric cubic structure with the P2 1 3 space group and shows a narrow-gap semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between the activation energy for conductivity [E ρ = 128(2) meV] and for thermopower [E S = 17.7 (9) meV] from 200 to 300 K indicates a polaronic transport mechanism. The electrical resistivity varies as exp (T 0 /T) 1/4 and thermopower varies as T 1/2 at low temperatures, indicating that it evolves into Mott variable-range hopping dominant conduction with decreasing temperature. IrSbSe shows a relatively low value of thermal conductivity (~1.65 W/Km) and thermopower of about 0.24 mV/K around 100 K, yet poor electrical conductivity. On the other hand, a high vacancy defect concentration on both Ir and Sb atomic sites of up to 15% suggests a high defect tolerance and points to the possibility of a future improvement of carrier density by chemical substitution or defect optimization.
